GOD, A MOTORCYCLE, AND THE OPEN ROAD: A Biker’s Devotional

By Tim Riter

GETTING CLEAN

SEEING STRESS BLOW AWAY IN THE BREEZE WHEN I WAS CRUISING THROUGH THE DEEP SOUTH ON MY HONDA 750, THE ABUNDANCE OF GREENERY STARTLED ME. ROLLING HILLS COVERED WITH TREES AND MOSS, SMALL FARMS, A FEW LARGE PLANTATIONS, ALL UNDER A CRYSTAL-BLUE SKY. WITH THE TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY BOTH AROUND 100, RIDING IN A TANK TOP SEEMED A NECESSITY. A NICE NECESSITY BACK IN THE DAYS WHEN WE LOVED TO BAKE AND BROIL UNDER THE SUMMER SUN FOR THE SAKE OF GETTING A TAN. AND THEN, OUT OF NOWHERE, A MASS OF BUGS ATTACKED MY BARE SKIN, WHICH WAS MOVING ALONG AT ABOUT 70 MPH WITH NO WINDSCREEN. THEY STUNG. AND STUCK. UNLIKE MOST BUGS THAT HIT AND RUN, THEY STUCK. TO MY SHIRT. MY ARMS. MY FACE. MY BIKE. I THOUGHT THESE BUGS MUST HAVE BEEN THE SOURCE OF SUPER GLUE.

OF FUNCTIONAL BRAIN IMAGING, INSTITUTE OF DEVELOPMENT, AGING AND CANCER AT TOHOKU UNIVERSITY STUDIED RIDERS AND NONRIDERS AND CONCLUDED THAT REGULAR RIDING STIMULATES THE RIGHT PREFRONTAL CORTEX FUNCTIONS, INCREASES THINKING FUNCTIONS OVERALL, AND ALSO IMPROVES MENTAL HEALTH, PARTICULARLY STRESS REDUCTION.2 IN PART, WE CONCENTRATE MORE, WHICH LESSENS STRESS. MAYBE OUR CONCENTRATION ON RIDING PUSHES OUT THE THOUGHTS OF OUR WORRIES AND CARES. BUT WE CAN TAKE IT A STEP FURTHER BY FOLLOWING GOD’S COMMAND TO DAVID: “BE STILL, AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD!” (PSALM 46:10). WITH THE NORMAL BENEFIT OF RIDING, AS THE WIND TAKES AWAY STRESS, WE INTENTIONALLY CHOOSE TO CONNECT WITH GOD. WE RELAX MENTALLY AND EMOTIONALLY WITH HIM. WE BECOME MORE AWARE OF HIS PRESENCE. GOD PROMISES THE MORE STILL WE ARE, THE MORE WE WILL KNOW HIM. WHAT A REASON TO RIDE!

SECOND, USE THAT IMPROVED THINKING TO ANALYZE AND PONDER AND PRAY. THINK ABOUT THIS: WHEN WE RIDE, WE THINK MORE EFFECTIVELY, SO LET’S TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT. LONG AGO SOCRATES SAID “THE UNEXAMINED LIFE IS NOT WORTH LIVING.” SO LET’S CHECK OUT OUR LIVES AS WE RIDE. THAT’S BIBLICAL, “LET US EXAMINE OUR WAYS AND TEST THEM, AND LET US RETURN TO THE LORD” (LAMENTATIONS 3:40). ONLY AS WE PONDER OUR LIVES CAN WE FULLY WALK WITH GOD. WE FIND THE SOURCES OF OUR SINS AND DEAL WITH THEM. WE EXPLORE DYSFUNCTIONAL RELATION-

I PULLED OVER AND POPPED ON MY JACKET FOR PROTECTION, AND A MISSHIPS AND DISCOVER HOW WE MIGHT IMPROVE THEM OR DEAL WITH THEIR SISSIPPI RIVER OF SWEAT STARTED TO STREAM OFF MY BODY. JUST NO WAY REALITY. MAYBE WE THINK ABOUT WHAT STRESSES US, HOW WE INVITED IT TO WIN. AT THE NEXT GAS STATION, I CLEANED MY BUG-COVERED HEADLIGHT IN, WHAT OPTIONS WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT. WE ASK GOD FOR INSIGHTS. MAYBE, WHEN WE STOP, WE ASK OUR FELLOW RIDERS FOR THEIR IDEAS. AND ASKED THE ATTENDANT WHAT HE KNEW ABOUT THE FLYING BEASTS. “OH, YEAH, WE CALL THEM LOVE BUGS. THEY COME IN PAIRS DURING THE MATING SEASON. GUESS YOU CAN FIGURE OUT WHY.” “ANY WAY TO AVOID THEM?” HE GRINNED AT THIS CALIFORNIA BIKER. “NOPE.” IN MY EARLY SOLO TRIPS, I USUALLY CAMPED OUT, BUT NOWADAYS I ENJOY A DECENT HOTEL WITH A HOT SHOWER AND A SOFT BED. EVEN WITH A FAIRING, YOU NEED TO CLEAN OFF THE DAY’S ROAD GRIME, AND THE HOT WATER SOOTHES SORE MUSCLES. THE OLD LINE HAS SOME TRUTH: YOU CAN TELL A HAPPY BIKER BY THE BUGS IN HIS TEETH. IT’S A PARADOX, THOUGH, HOW TO RIDE TO GET RID OF STRESS WHILE RIDING DEPOSITS LAYERS OF DIRT AND BUGS THAT NEED TO BE WASHED AWAY. LIFE JUST COMES WITH STRESS. GRANTED, WE CAUSE SOME OF IT, BUT SOME OF IT LANDS ON US LIKE THOSE LOVE BUGS. WE JUST HAPPEN TO BE IN A GOOD PLACE AT A BAD TIME. STUDIES ABOUND ABOUT THE PROBLEMS CAUSED BY STRESS, AND HAVING A WORKABLE DEFINITION HELPS. THE EDITORS AT MERRIAM-WEBSTER DEFINE IT AS “A STATE OF MENTAL TENSION AND WORRY CAUSED BY PROBLEMS IN YOUR LIFE, WORK, ETC., SOMETHING THAT CAUSES STRONG FEELINGS OF WORRY OR ANXIETY.”1 THEY SEEM TO HAVE BEEN READING MY JOURNAL! I RECENTLY RAN ACROSS THIS LINE: “FEELING STRESSED? MAYBE YOU JUST NEED AN IRON SUPPLEMENT.” A PICTURE OF A BIKE ACCOMPANIED IT. YEAH, THE IRON HORSE. LET’S CHECK OUT THREE STRESS SOLVERS THAT WORK ON OUR IRON HORSES. FIRST, ENJOY THE WIND. ALTHOUGH I CAN’T EXPLAIN THIS, DESPITE THE BUGS AND ROAD GRIME, RIDING CLEANSES US OF STRESS. A LOT OF BIKERS WILL SAY YOU’LL NEVER SEE A BIKE PARKED OUTSIDE A PSYCHIATRIST’S OFFICE. PART OF THIS COMES FROM THE FREEDOM OF THE OPEN ROAD, PART FROM THE WIND CARRYING STRESS AWAY. BUT SOME RECENT STUDIES HAVE GONE DEEPER. THE RYUTA KAWASHIMA LABORATORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

10

THIRD, REST IN GOD. BEING IN HIS WORLD HELPS. WE SEE THE WORLD HE CREATED, ITS BEAUTY AND DETAIL AND MASSIVENESS. WE SEE THE INTRICATE DESIGN THAT CAUSES ALL OF IT TO WORK TOGETHER. AND WHEN STRESS ARRIVES, WE CHOOSE EITHER TO RELY ON OUR OWN ABILITIES OR HIS. THIS PASSAGE GIVES A SOLUTION, ONE THAT WE MAY NOT LIKE: “MY HEART IS NOT PROUD, LORD; MY EYES ARE NOT HAUGHTY; I DO NOT CONCERN MYSELF WITH GREAT MATTERS OR THINGS TOO WONDERFUL FOR ME. BUT I HAVE CALMED AND QUIETED MYSELF, I AM LIKE A WEANED CHILD WITH ITS MOTHER; LIKE A WEANED CHILD I AM CONTENT” (PSALM 131:1-2). UNRESOLVED PROBLEMS CAUSE STRESS. SO HOW SHOULD WE RESPOND? WE SEE THE MAJESTY OF GOD’S CREATION AND REMEMBER THAT HE IS FULLY CAPABLE. ON MATTERS TOO GREAT FOR US TO DO ANYTHING, ONES WE CAN’T GET OUR MINDS AROUND, WE CHOOSE CALM AND QUIET OUR SOULS AND REST IN GOD. WE DON’T GET ANGRY AT THINGS WE CAN’T CHANGE. WE DON’T LET DISAPPOINTMENT DRIVE US. WE REST IN GOD’S HANDS WITH THE PEACE OF A CHILD BEING HELD BY ITS MOTHER.

SO YOU WANT TO BLOW THAT STRESS AWAY? HOP ON AND RIDE. KICK-STARTING THE APPLICATION WHAT’S THE LEVEL OF STRESS IN YOUR LIFE? WHAT IS IN YOUR POWER TO CHANGE? ON THE ISSUES YOU CAN’T CHANGE, HOW DO YOU HANDLE THEM? ANGER? FRUSTRATION? RESTING IN GOD’S ARMS? IN LOOKING AT THE THREE STRESS CLEANSERS, HOW CAN YOU USE THEM ON YOUR NEXT RIDE? Riter, Tim. God, a Motorcycle, and the Open Road: A Biker’s Devotional. Harvest House Publishers. Kindle Edition.

The Motorcycle Bell The story of the Motorcycle Bell is a sentimental story about the special and powerful bond between bikers, about brotherhood, friendship and kindness. And of course, it's a story about a powerful little talisman that wards off those nasty little road gremlins that mess with people's motorcycles. Yeah, you know what we're talking about. Those little things are pesky and they're trouble! In case you are shaking your head not knowing what this is about, sit down, grab a drink, because we'll tell you all about it. And in case you know what these motorcycle bells are, but don't know much about them, do the same. We surfed the internet, talked to some bikers and gathered a lot of interesting facts. One thing is for sure – if you don't have it, you'll feel like you need to get one. What is a Motorcycle Bell? Have you noticed that some motorcycles have a tiny decorated metal bell dangling from beneath? Perhaps you saw it on a parked bike, or a bike you've been working on, or perhaps someone gave it you as a gift. They don't just look cool, they have a very important purpose and a tradition that goes back almost as long as there were bikers roaming the roads of lands remote and near. Some people call them Motorcycle Bells or even Spirit Bells. They got their name a) because they are bells, and b) because they have magical powers that bring good luck to a biker and his bike, keeping them safe from evil spirits that can harm them while on the road. These evil spirits or creatures called "gremlins" lurk the roads, preying on bikers passing by, trying to find ways to cling to their motorcycles and cause mischief. Falling over, wrecking, engine stalling, tree branches falling, dead battery, mechanical problems on a lonely road where no one is around to help... Yup, all the work of gremlins. Perhaps you've even heard a biker and a mechanic mumbling: "gremlins" when there's an unusual motorcycle problem that no one can diagnose. They weren't joking. What is a Motorcycle Bell for? So, how does a motorcycle bell work? It looks like the gremlins can't stand the ringing sound of the metal bell due to their supersensitive hearing. They either hear the bell far from the distance and hide, waiting for the next "unlucky" biker without the bell. Or, if they've already clung to the bike (because they love to ride along and are happy to cause damage), they are captured in the hollow of the bell. The bell starts ringing during the drive, so they go crazy, releasing their grip and falling off to their death. And the proof of their existence and death? But the pot holes, of course! The ones who are not familiar with the legend of the motorcycle bell tend to curse the pot holes, but the ones with true knowledge know what they mean. A brave, anonymous biker strolled the road with his mighty bell fighting off gremlins and making the road safe for other fellow bikers who pass by the same place. These biker bells are a strong tradition among the members of the motorcycle community. Rumor has it that the gremlins especially like the Harleys, so Harley guardian bell is something they take very seriously. However, other cruisers and touring bike riders also feel strongly about it. These

are a lot of stories and claims of road troubles without the talisman. Some firmly believe in them, others not so much. However, although even when the belief is not very strong, no one wants to temp the faith, so a bell is always a must. Besides, if the pot holes are not enough proof, then nothing will be. Something does cause them, and nobody can deny that! The Pilots and the Gremlins Royal Air Force pilots began talking about small humanoid creatures clinging to their aircrafts, causing damage. The word “gremlin” comes from an Old English word “gremian” or “gremman”, which means “to make someone feel annoyed and/or worried”. It is believed that the pilots actually came up with the story to point to the RAF technology’s error-prone construction in a humorous way. However, pretty soon more and more US pilots claimed that they have seen the little creatures just before a crash or malfunction, which was enough to convince many never to go up in the air without the guarding bell. The small creature that wrecks American planes through diabolical sabotage was featured in the Warner Bros cartoon called the “Falling Hare” (or initially “Bugs Bunny and the Gremlin”). Bugs started laughing after reading about these creatures and what they do, and a small creature with a hammer appeared. Remember that? The epilog of the story is as follows: the pilots returned home after the WWII, started riding motorcycles, formed clubs and made the bond with their wartime buddies even stronger. They took the gremlin myth and the bells home with them and hung them on their beloved motorcycles for protection. The Old Biker’s Tale As mentioned, there is more than one story. The most sentimental one is certainly The Old Biker’s Tale and most of you true bikers probably know it well. For all those who don’t, it goes something like this. An old crusty biker was returning home from Mexico on a cold December night, many many years ago. The ride was smooth up until he reached the high desert where these small notorious little road gremlins were lurking, waiting to cause trouble. The biker rounded a curve and the gremlins ambushed him. He ended up on the ground, unable to move which made him a sweet and easy target for the gremlins who started to approach him. Luckily, his saddlebag has lying next to him, and again, luckily, it was filled with toys he had been carrying to some orphanage. He started throwing toys at them, trying to keep them away, but nothing worked until he grabbed a bell. He started ringing it, hopping that the sound will scare them. Meanwhile, another two bikers were camping out in the desert when they heard a bell ring. They thought a bell ringing in the middle of nowhere was strange, so they started to follow the sound and found the old biker on the ground trying to fight off the evil road demons. They rushed to his help and chased the gremlins away into the night. The old biker was so grateful that he offered them money for saving his life. Being true bikers, of course, money was out of the question, because that’s what bikers do – help each other out. And being a true biker himself, the old

fellow couldn’t let them leave without being somehow rewarded for the good deed that they did. He cut two straps out of his saddlebag, tied a bell to each, and tied them beneath each motorcycle, as closer to the ground as possible. He told his two bike brothers that the bells will keep them safe from road gremlins, and if ever in trouble, just ring the bell and the fellow bikers will run to their help. So, when you see a motorcycle with a bell on it, know that it is protected by the powerful magic of the bell. More importantly, know that the bell is a sign of true friendship and is a caring gift from one fellow biker to another. It is also a thoughtful and important gift for new bikers welcomed into the community, as it gives them a positive outlook on the ideals of brotherhood and special bond within the community. It is encouraging to know that someone cares for you and always got your back. Motorcycle Bell Rules - Your Guardian Angel on the Road Have you ever seen a tiny bell hanging on some bikes? You may have found one on a motorcycle you buy, found one on a bike you work on, given by a friend. Well, it turns out; these bells have a purpose and are a biker tradition going back decades. Wearing the bell and the understanding of it was interpreted more loosely over time, a particular portion of the biker community tends to purchase one since it looks pretty cool without paying much attention to its original rules and rituals. Must-Obey Rules The most important bell rules are in the following order: Rule #1: Don’t buy your own bell – If you want to bell magic works, it MUST be a gift. Its supernatural powers are activated by the gesture of goodwill/care, and then it becomes especially powerful if gifted by a fellow rider’; Rule #2: Never hang your bell – The bell MUST be hung on your ride by the person who gave it to you. Not only does the individual give the sacred gift to you with intentional goodwill, but that persona ensures that the protection is activated with goodwill intentions also; Rule #3: Never leave the bell behind – If you sell your bike, never leave it on the motorcycle for the new owner. The jingle should be cherished for what it personifies, so you should take it off, keep it or transfer bell to a new ride. If you want to give a bell to the new owner as a present, you’ll need to take the bell off and personally hand it over. If you don’t give a bell with goodwill that is intentional, it won’t have any effect; Rule #4: Put it to the lowest part of the frame – If you put the jingle as low as possible and closer to the front, you’ll ensure that that’s the first thing road gremlins will grab and that they’re instantly captured by it without a chance of making mischief; Rule #5: A stolen bell loses its magic – This bell is all about good intentions, so stolen together with the motorcycle, it’ll lose its powers. The sneak-thief won’t have a chance. Rule #6: The bell should be cleaned and polished – Every time the ride is cleaned, the bell should be polished. You should think of all the fallen fellows while doing it, which is a way of paying them respect. information source; cratex.com/motorcycle-bell

Trish & Julz As a new rider Trish was honored to have the tradition of a fellow rider, Julz, give her a guardian Bell for her first motorcycle. Trish said: “It means so much to me to have friend that inspires and encourages me to be a better rider, be the one that gave it to me.”

Dr. Dilligaf, What if anything can we as a motorcycle community take away from the recent events that we have been subjected to? I’ve been re-thinking my priorities and would value your input as I determine a new path. Are you going to do things differently after things get back to what will be a new normal? Biker Chick in Belton Dear Biker Chick, You have posed two excellent questions. I’m going to answer the second one first. Some things I’ll do differently. I don’t know that a handshake will be the way that I meet and greet a stranger. As far as friends and family are considered, unless they cower as I approach a handshake, a hug or slap on the back is still what I’m offering. I will take no offense if they are un-wanted. That six foot distant thing I’m kind of digging here and there. I can’t tell you how many times an oderiferous individual has caused me to back up and regroup. It might be a good thing for you as a woman. Telling someone to back off might be a plus when you are out and about. And guess what, totally acceptable now. I think for men we’ll wind up going about things pretty much the same way we used to, eventually. But for women they will be entering a new age. 2020 might well be the year of the Farm Girl. After this men won’t be looking for that woman with the fake nails, eye lash extensions and Tattoos. Nope, they’re going to be looking for the girls who can catch and pluck a

You want to get a man after this is over you better learn how to churn butter, conserve toilet paper, skin a squirrel and have a supply of Clorox wipes. A little money put aside for emergencies sounds very attractive to me. Instead of face paint a case of face masks might be a better investment. Obversely, if you’re looking for a man might I suggest a Red Neck, a Farmer or an all around outdoorsman. A lot of imperfections can be overlooked when you’re hungry or broke. But whatever happens keep riding those bikes because a motorcycle will see you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no riding. ~Dr. Dilligaf

Chrome Comedy Corner My Friends Drag Me Down! Ok, this was many years ago, and far from my current ride, but it’s kinda funny. I got my first streetbike at 16 after growing up on mini-bikes and dirt bikes. (anyone remember Hodaka?) It was a Yamaha RD250, a twin cylinder, screaming little two stroke. A buddy had it and never rode it anymore so I talked him out of it for something like $180.00. It didn’t run at the time so I decided I’d have another buddy pull me behind his car. Came the day to get it, we both went over there and neither of us thought to bring a rope or tow strap. The seller came to the rescue with about 20’ of garden hose! Elated, I tied one end the the car bumper, and the other to the handlebars. AT first everything went well. We got it out of the backyard and out to the road. We eased up the side street and came to a stop sign. This is where everything went a bit out of control. As my buddy stopped at the stop-sign, the stiff brakes didn’t work as they should and I ran over part of the hose with the front tire. When he took off to get out on the main road the hose pulled tight, lifted the front wheel off the ground, and dumped me in the street! Trust me it’s a bad feeling laying in the road warching your newly bought motorcycle being dragged down the road by a garden hose!! We finally got it together and got the bike home. I ended up riding it for years before finally selling it, and to this day it’s one of my favorite bikes. ~ FL Bandit

Biker Turned A Bad Day Fun I usually enjoy kids riding in the back seat and watching as you ease past them. I usually give them a little wave and relish in the big smile that follows. But this one time, I guess I wasn’t in the best of moods, I noticed this kid looking at me. I reached up and grabbed as if to catch something in mid air. Took a quick look in my hand then quickly popped the non-existent insect delight into my mouth. I turned my head to the kid while exaggeratedly chewing on the imagined critter and getting some twisted delight in seeing him gagging. `~Wiredog *****************************
