YOUR VOTES ARE IN ... THE ‘BEST’ IN OUR COMMUNITY TAKE CARE OF ALL OF US The Best of Springfield 2026 competition brightly shines a light on those who deserves the spotlight — the ones who work hard and the ones who want you to play hard. In this magazine we have articles on some of the winners, including The Ridgeway Cafe, the winner in this year’s Best Burger category — and in previous years, too. I really like what owner Chris Lewis said: “I remind my staff from time to time to treat each guest like they only had enough money to eat out one time this month, and they chose The Ridgewood Café. Don’t let them down. Make it a premium experience.”

MANDY GAMBRELL EDITOR

Yes. To. This. We pay a lot for meals in restaurants these days, and it’s

really great to hear a business owner acknowledge that, especially because supply chain prices have soared for them, making quality service more difficult than in years past. I know I want that burger now more than ever after reading his commitment to exceptional customer experiences. Take a look at another Best of Springfield finalist: Buck Creek State Park. Located 10 minutes from the heart of Springfield, the park boasts more than 2,100 acres of lake and more than 4,000 acres for recreation. It’s a historic place that keeps people hiking, boating, camping, fishing and enjoying the outdoors.

It has a beach that visitors love, as well as a trail that is accessible under the Americans with Disabilities Act and two cabins that are ADA-accessible. This year’s contest is filled with fun places to go and people to know. You are encouraged to visit springfieldnewssun. com/local/bestofspringfield to see the results and share the information with your friends on social medial. Help us recognize well-deserving businesses and people. Thank you to the Greater Springfield Partnership for allowing us to work with them each year, and to the readers for your nominations and votes.

Thank You Springfield!

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS

BEST OF SPRINGFIELD MORE THAN A COMPETITION As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Best of Springfield, we are filled with gratitude and pride for the businesses, organizations and community members who make this tradition possible. Ten years ago, the Greater Springfield Partnership joined with our valued partner, the Springfield News-Sun, to create a program focused on one simple but important goal: highlighting the people, places, services, restaurants, attractions and organizations that make Springfield and Clark County outstanding places to live, work and visit. What started as a community recognition program has grown into a beloved annual tradition that showcases the very best our community has to offer.

MIKE McDORMAN PRESIDENT AND CEO Greater Springfield Partnership

The Best of Springfield is more than a competition. It is a celebration of community pride. Every nomination and every vote represents a neighbor recognizing excel-

lence, supporting local businesses and expressing appreciation for the people and organizations that enrich our daily lives. We are fortunate to live in a community filled with innovators, entrepreneurs, dedicated professionals, community servants and passionate business owners who work every day to make Springfield stronger. The winners and finalists featured in this publication have earned the respect and admiration of the community they serve, and we congratulate each of them on this well-deserved recognition. The Greater Springfield Partnership and the Springfield News-Sun are proud to continue this collaboration because we believe that celebrating local success matters.

When we recognize excellence, support local businesses and tell the stories of those who contribute to our community’s success, we help build a stronger sense of connection and pride across Clark County. On behalf of the Greater Springfield Partnership board of directors and staff, thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Best of Springfield voting process. Most importantly, congratulations to all of the winners and finalists. Your dedication, hard work and commitment to excellence help make our community a truly exceptional place. Here’s to another decade of celebrating the best of Springfield and the people who make it great.

FAST LANE WASH: ‘PERSONAL SERVICE MAKES US STAND OUT’ Ginny McCabe Contributing Writer

John Cotter, the owner of one of the city’s most-visited car washes, is thrilled to thank customers for its Best of Springfield nomination. Fast Lane Wash & Lube is one of several local businesses to receive a nod in the Springfield

News Sun’s annual contest. “This honor means a lot to me. It means our hard work is seen and what we do means something to the community and that we are doing it right,” Cotter said. Fast Lane Wash & Lube was named Best Car Wash. It also earned the same honor in 2024. “I want to thank the com-

munity for keeping me in business for 35 years because it’s been a blessing to stay here and make a living in Springfield, Ohio, when a lot of people had to leave to find an opportunity,” said Cotter. Fast Lane Wash & Lube has been locally owned and operated since 1980. “The hand-drying and per-

sonal service makes us stand out,” Cotter said. “We try to put out a better-quality wash, and it really is about the quality of the service,” he said. Originally known as Overpass Car & Van Wash, the business was opened by Lawrence Green. CONTINUED ON PAGE 9

MORE INFORMATION Cotter was hired in 1982 and became the manager in 1983. In 1991, Cotter purchased the business. He is a native of Springfield. “I’ve been working at the business for 44 years, and I’ve owned it for 35 years,” he said. In 1998, the business officially became Fast Lane Wash & Lube with the expansion of the business and the addition of the maintenance services. “The car wash is what we call a flex-serve car wash, meaning we can do the exterior only, or the inside and out, like vacuum and clean the windows. The oil change is a 10-to-15-minute oil change, so it’s a fast lube,”

Fast Lane Wash & Lube is at 1210 E. Main St. in Springfield. For information, call 937-3237610 or visit the website at fastlanewash.com.

Cotter said. A basic exterior wash for cars, trucks and SUVs is $12. Extra services such as Ultra Shine Clear Coat and HandWashed White Walls are $3 each. Package deals also are available for multiple services. A full-service car wash for cars, trucks and SUVs is $25 and includes hand prep with a high-pressure spray, conveyor,

a soft cloth/brushless wash, vacuumed floors and seats, and washed windows with a hand-towel dry, including the door jams. Extra services also may be purchased. Additionally, Fast Lane Wash & Lube offers interior and exterior detailing and maintenance services, including an oil change, tuneups and light auto maintenance, as well as commercial fleet services. Cotter said one thing he enjoys the most are “the people,” both the customers and his staff members. “I enjoy speaking to the customers, and I love working alongside my team. It’s part of it. I’m a people person,” he said. “I have gotten to know so

many people.” Often, Cotter feels like the company mascot because he is always at the business, continually working. “I enjoy being one of the last ones to do this. A lot of businesses like this have gone away, and a lot of times, it’s because of ownership or they didn’t have good managers or keep track of the quality of the job. This costs people money. They spend their hard-earned wages.” “I enjoy providing a service for the people, and I appreciate hearing ‘This is the best car wash,’ and it’s the only one they want to go to. I enjoy that,” Cotter said. “It feels like a nice pat on the back.”

VIVA LA FIESTA: VIBRANT ATMOSPHERE, AUTHENTIC FOOD Ginny McCabe Contributing Writer

Viva La Fiesta, a popular eatery in Springfield, has been voted Best Dine-In Restaurant in the annual Best of Springfield contest. “We specialize in creating food with love, the way customers like to eat it, with fresh, quality ingredients,” said Abel Joany Fuentes, the owner of Viva La Fiesta who also goes by “Johnny.” The restaurant, known for its Tex-Mex and authentic Mexican dishes, has been open in Springfield for two years. It has an expansive menu and more than a dozen margarita flavors, like the Guava Margarita and the Rainbow Margarita with seven distinct flavors. Customers’ favorite dishes include the Boss Burrito, street-style tacos and chicken tortilla soup. Trash Can Nachos are a top seller. “Whatever you’re looking for in a Mexican restaurant, we have it, and we have it with the right flavors, consistency and the right taste,” Fuentes said. A “secret menu” with new, limited-time items will be introduced in the next few months, he said. “We listen to our customers,” Fuentes said of the restaurant’s popularity with voters. “We want to make their experience better than the average Mexican restaurant. We’re fast, but we want to maintain the superior quality we’re known for.” Fuentes and his team always go the extra mile to ensure that customers come back. The staff has decades of experience in the culinary industry. “We pride ourselves on excellent customer service. We

pay attention to details, and we know what people like. We know their names, faces, what they order and what they like to drink,” Fuentes said. “We want our customers to feel at home here,” Fuentes said. “We tell our staff to treat people the same way they would like to be treated when they go out.” Fuentes said he and his employees appreciate being part of the community and

they are thankful to be able to provide for the people of Springfield. “Without the community’s support, we wouldn’t be able to do the business that we do,” he said. Fuentes said the Best of Springfield honor recognizes the hard work he and his team put into the restaurant. “We can say the hard work is going to pay off and tell our employees, ‘Great job on being

successful.’ This is for them. They come to work every day with the right attitude, wanting to work. So, without an outstanding team, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do,” Fuentes said. He acknowledged the support of the Greater Springfield Partnership, the downtown Springfield community and Wittenberg University. As for the customers, Fuentes said, “We are grateful for the way they support us and how they make us part of their lives and part of the Springfield community. Words cannot express how thankful we are for them. I can’t thank them enough. We genuinely appreciate their support.”

THE RIDGEWOOD CAFÉ: BEST BURGERS, PREMIUM EXPERIENCE Ginny McCabe Contributing Writer

The Ridgewood Café, located in the heart of Springfield, has the Best Burger, according to voters in this year’s Best of Springfield competition.

“This is the fifth year in a row that we’ve received the Best Burger honor,” said Chris Lewis, who owns and operates the eatery with his wife, Rebecca. “All of our burgers are handcrafted. It’s like building a cus-

tom home,” he said. “Our kitchen staff goes from Step 1 to 99, and we deliver the best product to the customer that we possibly can.” “I’d also like to give a shout out to Dean Caven of Caven’s Meats. They supply our

steaks and our ground beef and sometimes our pork,” Lewis said. “It’s all fresh. It doesn’t come frozen. We cut and make the patties ourselves.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 17

ing steaks, seafood, chicken, pasta, flavorful burgers and deli sandwiches. “We create everything with quality ingredients and make sure all of our menu items go out like they should,” said Jesse Webb, chef at The Ridgewood Café. He said receiving the Best Burger honor reflects on “how much we care and that we like what we’re doing.” “We sell a lot of all of our burgers,” said Webb, who has 24 years of experience.

“Everything we do is made from scratch in-house.” Burger selections include the Ridgewood Burger, which is topped with ham, applewood bacon, a fried egg and barbeque sauce and finished with frizzled onions. All burgers are served with fries or chips. “Our business continues to grow by word of mouth,” Webb said. “We have a lot of repeat customers who keep coming back after having one, saying it’s the best burger they have ever had.” The Straw Hat Burger is smothered with The Ridgewood Café’s smoked Gouda Guinness beer cheese and garnished with frizzled onions. Other favorites include the 3-Cheese Bacon Burger, the Beyond Burger, the Patty Melt and the Traditional Burger. The drink menu includes draft beer and wine selections, as well as handcrafted cocktails.

The dining room’s décor is highlighted by wood-lined walls and reclaimed industrial finishes to create a cozy yet stylish atmosphere. Lewis, a lifelong resident of Springfield, has made a living in the community for 50 years. He and Rebecca purchased The Ridgewood Café from the previous owners once they retired. “It was a good establishment, but I thought we could put a new spin on it, elevate the food and the experience being offered and make it a hidden gem in the middle of the neighborhood, and people have really seemed to enjoy it,” he said. “The big payoff for us is watching our staff be successful, and I give them all the accolades for everything good that happens at the restaurant. We also enjoy seeing our guests happy with what our staff can bring to them.”

HI-HAT SOCIAL’S FOOD ‘MADE WITH LOVE, AND YOU CAN TASTE THAT’ Ginny McCabe Contributing Writer

THE BANH MI SOUTHERN FRIED CATFISH SANDWICH is a customer favorite at Hi-Hat Social. The restaurant at 28 S. Limestone St. in Springfield has the Best Appetizers and the Best Japanese Food/Sushi, according to Best of Springfield voters.

Hi-Hat Social was one of several area businesses to receive nods in multiple categories in this year’s Best of Springfield contest, and its team is thrilled. “Customer service is our No. 1 goal here. We want you to feel like you’re at our home, at our family get-together or our backyard barbecue, as our chef likes to say,” said Brittany Waters, general manager at Hi-Hat Social. “Everybody’s treated like family here, from the customers down to the employees. Then, the food sells itself. It’s so delicious. It’s made with love, and you can taste that in the food, and the quality of ingredients are the highest we can buy. It’s local and fresh.” Hi-Hat Social finished first in the Best Appetizers and Best Japanese Food/Sushi categories. The restaurant also was a finalist for Best Asian Food, Best Dine-In Restaurant, Best Restaurant to take an Out-ofTowner and Best Bar/Brewpub. “This means everything. It is great because last year we got nominated in two categories, but we didn’t win, so knowing this year ... is fantastic. It makes us feel like we did it,” Waters said. “Within two years of opening, we’ve gotten our name out there, and we’ve gotten the word out. We have regular guests and people who love us, and we appreciate and love you right back,” she said. rant opened in December 2024. “We want to say thank you, and we are excited to keep serving you,” Waters said. “We can’t wait to serve you more delicious food and new creations.” The restaurant offers a variety of cuisines, including Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese, as well as Indian dishes. World-class sushi is available for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; soon, sushi will be offered for dinner. Clayton Horrighs, the executive chef at Hi-Hat Social, has excelled in creating Asian dishes with an American spin on the menu, such as cheeseburgers, salads and wings. CONTINUED ON PAGE 23

BUCK CREEK STATE PARK: ‘COME AND VISIT US’ Ginny McCabe Contributing Writer

Buck Creek State Park is one of several businesses and attractions to receive a nod from the general public in this year’s Best of Springfield contest. “We have quite a bit to do here and, unfortunately, a lot of people don’t realize that,” said Ed McGowan, park manager with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Parks and Watercraft at Buck Creek State Park. “Our main goal is to allow access for everyone and to keep the parks affordable, and we definitely do that,” he said. McGowan hopes the experience at Buck Creek State Park is “one that creates memories.” “Some of my fondest memories growing up are of us going camping and remembering being able to go out on a trail on our bikes, or hiking the trails, going to a naturalist program or playing in the arcade at the campground,” he said. “It was just such a positive experience.” Buck Creek State Park is a finalist in the Best Attraction category. “This honor means a lot. There’s a lot of great things to do in Springfield. There are a lot of wonderful places to go and take your families to. I think a lot of people have overlooked the state parks for a number of years. A lot of people know us as the reservoir, but there are people who have no idea that we have cabins or camping. So, we have really pushed for people to realize what we have and what we offer, and the fact that people voted us nice and high as the best attraction is fantastic. It’s a good feeling to know that people appreciate us,” McGowan said. “Thank you so much for voting for us,” he said. “If you haven’t come out, come and visit

BUCK CREEK STATE PARK — WHICH INCLUDES THE C.J. BROWN RESERVOIR — is a finalist in this year’s Best Attraction category.

us, and if you have visited us, stop in, say hi and ask what else you should see.” Buck Creek State Park is a public recreation area in Clark County that features the C.J. Brown Reservoir for boating and an accessible pier for fishing. Hikers and horseback riders will find miles of multi-use trails passing through meadows and wetlands. The park’s overnight accommodations include newly updated cabins and a modern campground. “Obviously, we are a state park, and one of the biggest assets we have here is our lake, the C.J. Brown Reservoir. It is 2,200-plus acres. We have unlimited horsepower for boats there, so we get boats. We get sailboats. We get windsurfers out there. It’s a huge lake for fishing,” McGowan said. Another popular aspect of the park is its half-mile long beach, making it one of the longest public beaches in the state. A brand-new marina store and nature center opened at Buck Creek State Park in October 2025. The new 2,528-square-foot building

replaces the original smaller structure that was demolished in 2024. “In keeping with the water aspect, we also have a marina. So, we have seasonal docks that are available. We also have our nightly dock rentals. You can rent it for a day or you can rent it for a week. Then, right there at the marina, we have our brand-new marina building. ... It was a 2.5 million capital project. We’re super happy about that,” he said. The attached nature center provides hands-on opportunities for visitors to learn about the park’s natural history and recreational offerings. The nature center is open yearround. “We never had a nature center before. Our director, Mary Mertz, loves the educational aspect of our nature center, and that has been a passion of hers. They decided to put a nature center here, and it’s a great place for it. It’s a beautiful building. In addition, there’s also a store there that sells bait, snacks, ice and drinks. One of the popular items there is we

sell hand-dipped ice cream, and we offer freshly made waffle cones. So, depending on when you go in there, it’s smells absolutely amazing,” McGowan said. “People are really stunned by how nice it looks.” The park also has a new naturalist, Summer Wohlfrom, to lead its nature programming. Modern restroom facilities and outdoor seating with views of the lake are also available. There is an archery range and a disc golf course at the park. The park offers approximately 17 miles of trails, including hiking trails and bridle trails and a trail that is accessible under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Snowmobiles are allowed on the bridle trails during the winter. There is seasonal hunting available. Buck Creek State Park has 23 cabins with two bedrooms, heating, air conditioning, a kitchen and a screened-in porch. Some of the cabins have a deck, a grill and a picnic table. The cabins sleep up to six people. Two of the cabins are ADA-accessible. The cabins were renovated in 2023. The campground offers 111 sites, and 44 of the sites were recently converted to full hook-up sites. The electric has been upgraded to 50-amp electric, and the shower house has been renovated. “They’ve been extremely popular, so we are super excited about that,” McGowan said. Last September, Ohio State Parks was named the best park system in the nation for providing excellent recreation programs and services. The state of Ohio was awarded the 2025 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management from the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration, in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association.
