PREACHING THAT
THREE
KEY THEMES TO CONSIDER:
Consider crafting sermons and messages around predominant themes in Scripture on God’s heart for the vulnerable.
OUR PRIMARY GOAL AS THE CHURCH IS NOT RECRUITMENT OR ACTIVISM, BUT DISCIPLESHIP. Our preaching and teaching are rooted in this truth and driven by the ambition to see the people of God deeply celebrating the love of God and then widely demonstrating that love to the most vulnerable around us. Our doing for others is ultimately rooted in what God has done for us through Jesus. We’re compelled by the gospel, which reminds us that we care because we have been greatly cared for by Jesus. This is the essence of our preaching: the power of the gospel to transform.
We DO in response to what God has DONE.
Themes
God incarnates.
All throughout Scripture we see a God who moves toward hard places and struggling people. This is God’s consistent method of operation.
In the incarnation, God says, “I see you where you are, and I’m coming after you!” Our moving toward the vulnerable then puts the heart of God on display in vividly “pure and undefiled” ways (James 1:27).
“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God with us’).” MATTHEW 1:23
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us…” JOHN 1:14
