Dear Friends,
News cycles are packed with stories of human suffering. Extending a helping hand in these cases is often very difficult due to political conflicts and social instability. But, these realities create in us feelings of gratitude and a desire to find ways to foster positive change. Christel House was founded 22 years ago to transform lives. How gratifying it is to see children from distressed circumstances climb the ladder of life – attaining a good education, solid values, high school and often college diplomas, and finally gainful employment. They are charting a whole new life of empowerment, dignity and success. When you read about the achievements of Cristian, Padmini, Chad, Max and Lesvi in our 2019 Annual Report, try to imagine the challenges they have had to overcome. All of us at Christel House – teachers, administrators, staff, students and parents – have worked very hard to make our mission a reality. And, we can proudly proclaim, Christel House Works! Thank you for believing in our mission, for your loyal support and for setting an example for others to follow. You demonstrate that a meaningful and purposeful life includes caring for others. A Message from Bart
Christel House helps children from deeply distressed communities around the world realize their full potential. It starts with a strong K – 12 academic curriculum and adds character development programming designed to instill independence, integrity, social responsibility and leadership. Each school provides daily breakfast and lunch, preventive and acute health care, social services and enrichment activities. But our holistic model of support doesn’t end with high school graduation. For five years post-graduation, the Christel House College & Careers program provides financial, academic and career-oriented assistance as students transition to college, apprenticeships and work. The work of Christel House is intense and time-consuming. There are no short-cuts in this process. We care as much about our students at age 25 as we do at age 5. This is the organization’s unique value proposition – and, as we hope you will see from the results contained in this 2019 Annual Report, it works. A career counseling workshop inspired Padmini to pursue a career in hospitality. She took a hotel internship while earning a Bachelor’s of Tourism degree. The Jumeirah Group of Hotels offered her a position in Dubai, where she excelled. Within a year, Padmini was promoted, supervising front office operations and staff training. She credits the Christel House core values of respect, responsibility, independence and integrity for her success.

A tireless advocate for victims, Lesvi then founded her own nonprofit organization to counsel domestic violence perpetrators.

Holiday Inn Club Vacations has raised over $2.2 million for Christel House since 2002 at the Kissimmee, FL tournament.
Grand Pacific Resorts (GPR) doubled proceeds at the California tournament, while David Brown, Co-President of GPR, raised funds to purchase Chromebooks for Christel House Mexico.
The foundation served as Presenting Sponsor of the 2019 Christel House Passport to Prosperity event.
IIBC selected Christel House India as its charity of choice and donated over $12,000.

To measure self-sufficiency, Christel House considers whether a graduate’s income is adequate to provide for basic needs (food, housing, savings for the future). This is a noticeably higher measure than the national poverty line, which seldom provides a decent standard of living. Educational attainment and sustained, quality employment are vital factors in achieving economic mobility.
The Christel House MULTIPLIER EFFECT When a Christel House graduate achieves self-sufficiency, subsequent generations also benefit. If every one of our 5,340 students has two children, and each of their children has two offspring, within two generations 27,660 individuals would be experiencing a decent standard of living.
