Rusiru Kodithuwakku

During his time at Christ College, Rusiru Kodithuwakku (School House 2015-22) was the embodiment of a true all-rounder, contributing to all areas of school life culminating in his role as Head of School in his final year. An avid cricketer, he captained the 1st Cricket XI for two years and was a stalwart in the 1st Hockey XI for four years. With a passion for acting, he played significant roles in school productions and gained numerous awards for his performances in the annual House Speech and Drama competitions.

After seven years at Christ College, Rusiru left school to study Medicine at Cardiff University. He has continued to hone his leadership skills at university, becoming President of Cardiff Sri Lankan Society and acting as an instrumental factor in driving its growth through collaboration with universities across the UK. The society’s success has followed his desire to showcase Sri Lankan culture and develop an inclusive and vibrant community that connects UK Sri Lankans, international students, and the wider student body.

Through his medical studies, Rusiru discovered a passion for teaching and education, propelling him to participate in and later have a role in leading the PACE (Promoting Academic and Community Excellence) project in Cardiff, a healthcare and medical education outreach programme focusing on widening access to medicine. Acting as a tutor, mentor, and role model, and running weekly interactive sessions for pupils from underrepresented backgrounds, he has inspired young students to pursue careers in healthcare or even see university as a possibility while providing Rusiru with a meaningful outlet for giving back to the community.

Looking ahead, and with the aim of enhancing his proficiency, knowledge and skills in preparation for his career as a doctor, Rusiru is set to pursue an intercalated degree in emergency medicine and pre-hospital care before his final year of medicine.

Welcome to Prize Day 2026, the most important day in our calendar as we gather to celebrate all that our pupils have achieved this academic year.

This is an especially important day for our Leavers, and a proud and emotional day for their families as they watch their loved ones move on to the next exciting chapters in their lives. Personally, it is not their achievements that make me feel most proud but the people they have become. So often, Breconians strike the right balance between confidence and humility; they are well-mannered whilst maintaining a twinkle of mischief and a wonderful sense of humour. I hope that never changes.

Our Leavers are ready for all that comes next, and they go with the love, good wishes and blessings of us all in the Christ College community. Congratulations to all our winners, and Godspeed to the Leavers of 2026, whose ranks I will be proudly joining.

The focus on our second curriculum in the recent television documentary ‘Trading Places’ shone a light on this important area of enrichment at Christ College. We place great store in our pupils’ lives outside of the classroom and our commitment to developing the whole person is clear. Participation rates across Sport, Music, Drama and Adventure are extremely high. The pupils deserve great credit for their wholehearted commitment to our second curriculum.

The trophies and awards presented today are a public recognition of this full participation and may I in this short piece also acknowledge their peers and coaches that together have helped them achieve such notable success. The second curriculum is flourishing, and this would not be possible without the tireless commitment and enthusiasm within the Christ College community throughout all four seasons.

Welcome to all members of the Christ College community as we gather at the end of another memorable academic year. CCB continues to provide an outstanding platform for our outgoing pupils to make their mark on the world. We were delighted that 91% of Upper Sixth pupils last summer secured their firstchoice university offer and look forward to celebrating the achievements of this cohort of leavers in August.

Prize Day remains the most important day in the CCB calendar with prize-winners reporting the tangible pride they feel at being part of something bigger than themselves. The prizes awarded today are testament to the hard work, dedication and talents of our pupils often over an extended period. Deputy Head (Academic)

English

Walter and Diana Greenwood English (Jnr)

Awarded to a junior pupil for excellence in English.

Founded in 1980 on his retirement by W D T Greenwood (Master 1961-80). WDTG taught English and was the first to hold the office of Second Master (Deputy Head). He was for sixteen years Housemaster of Donaldson's, and for five years Head of English.

Awarded to Freya Hope (Y11)

Norbury English Literature (Snr)

Awarded to a senior pupil for excellence in English and commitment to its study.

Founded in 1946 by an anonymous donor, it is traditionally awarded to a pupil working to the highest level in all aspects of English.

Awarded to Sophie Pickup (U6)

Corbett Winder Debating Cup

Awarded for debating skills of the highest level in public competitive debate.

Given in 1985 by Mrs Ailsa Corbett Winder. Brought up in India and Iraq, Mrs Corbett Winder was committed to life in Wales and the County of Brecon, and helped many young people give of their best. She believed that by ‘speaking out’ in debates young people of the school would learn about important ethical issues and develop their confidence and make a contribution to society.

D C Thomas Poetry Prize

Awarded this year to a prizewinning poet in the L6.

Founded in 2016 by the family of David Cuthbert Thomas (1895-1916) in remembrance of a young man who inspired the poets Siegfried Sassoon and Robert Graves. D C Thomas (Hostel 1906-14) played for the 1st XV and the 1st XI. He had hopes of going to Oxford but enlisted at the start of the First World War just a few weeks after leaving school in 1914. While serving as a Second Lieutenant with the Royal Welch Fusiliers, he was hit by a sniper’s bullet and died of wounds on 18 March 1916.

Modern Languages

John de Winton Spanish (Jnr)

Awarded to a junior pupil for sustained good work and promise in Spanish.

Founded in 1977 as a Modern Languages Prize in memory of John C P de Winton (1905-1976). A partner in a firm of local solicitors, John de Winton was Registrar and Clerk to the Governors of Christ College from 1946 until 1965. He served as a Governor from 1965 to 1975 following a continuous line of de Winton governors that began with his greatgrandfather, J P de Winton, who had attended the very first Governors meeting held on 1 October 1855 under the new Scheme that refounded the school by Act of Parliament.

C W Kleiser French (Jnr)

Awarded to a junior pupil for sustained good work and promise in French.

Founded in 1998 by C W Kleiser (Staff 1967-98) on his retirement. CWK taught French, and was also Housemaster of Alway from 1972 to 1984. He was Master i/c Cricket and coached the XI (1967-98). He was responsible for bringing first-class cricket matches to CCB, and undertook the first Christ College cricket tour to Australia. He also initiated the annual COBS (College, Old Boys and Staff) side made up of the current XI and former players, and arranged regular COBS tours to Paris.

Awarded for sustained good work and promise in Welsh.

Founded in 2013.

Awarded to Eric Xue (Y11)

Ruth Wilkinson Modern Languages (Snr)

Awarded to a talented senior linguist for outstanding work in Modern Languages.

Founded in 1989 by the Venerable W D G Wilkinson (Hostel 1907-16) in memory of his daughter, Ruth Wilkinson (1932-1975), who was a talented student of literature and an exceptional linguist.

Humanities

Preb. Walters Scripture (Jnr)

Founded in 1975 as a Scripture prize. Now awarded to a junior pupil for sustained good work and promise in Religious Studies.

Given by Prebendary E E F Walters. Affectionately known as ‘the Preb.’ he retired to Brecon in 1968. Having been Chaplain at Ellesmere and Epsom and the Founding Headmaster at Lichfield Cathedral Choir School, he acted as assistant Chaplain at Christ College for several decades in his retirement.

Awarded to Pracika Kandel (Y11)

Lady Jenour Scripture (Snr)

Founded in 1977 as a Scripture prize. Now awarded to a senior pupil for outstanding work in Religious Studies.

Given in the name of Lady Jenour by her husband, Sir Maynard Jenour, the Welsh industrialist and philanthropist who was also a Christ College Governor and Benefactor.

Douglas Inglis History

Awarded for excellence and promise in History.

Founded in 1969 in memory of Douglas Inglis (1904-1967). DI (Master 1954-67) taught at Brecon Boys County School for 25 years before his appointment at Christ College to teach History. He was also Master i/c Golf. An able golfer himself, he was an active member of Brecon Golf Club from its inception and had been its Captain and Secretary. He was also chairman of local athletics and cricket associations, and was a founding member of the Brecknock Little Theatre.

Lady Brecon Geography

Awarded for excellence and promise in Geography.

Founded by Lady Brecon in 1965, wife of Lord Brecon and herself a generous supporter of Christ College, to mark the opening in May 1965 of the Cartwright Building (now the Languages Faculty building), which was designed to include a dedicated Geography classroom.

Francis de Winton Economics (Snr)

Awarded for outstanding work in Economics.

Founded in 1986 by Francis L P de Winton who succeeded his brother John de Winton as a Governor from 1975 to 1980. Francis de Winton had served in the Second World War and was High Sheriff of Brecknockshire in 1969. He continued his military service through active involvement in the Territorial Army until his retirement. As a highly experienced bank manager, latterly manager at the Cox’s and King’s branch of Lloyds Bank in Pall Mall, he brought valuable financial expertise to the Governing Body.

Mathematics and computing

Jack Rees Mathematics (Jnr)

Awarded to a junior pupil for mathematical excellence.

Founded in 1975 in memory of Major H J V ‘Jack’ Rees (1891-1964) in recognition of a generous bequest. Jack Rees (School House 1902-10) gained Colours at rugby, cricket, and Hockey, and captained the XV in 1909. He gained a Blue for Rugby Football while at Exeter College, Oxford, and also played for the Harlequins and Barbarians.

He served with the Brecknockshire Battalion (South Wales Borderers) during the First World War and was appointed Secretary to the Brecon War Memorial Hospital when it opened in 1928. He remained a keen supporter of his old school, and for several years coached rugby and cricket. A memorial to him, the ‘Jack Rees stone’, is on the boundary of the 1st XI pitch.

Roger St Elvan Richards Mathematics (Snr)

Awarded to a talented senior pupil who shows exceptional interest in mathematics and commitment to its study.

Founded in 1987 by Roger St Elvan Richards (Hostel 1914-16) in memory of his own lifetime’s love of mathematics. During the Second World War, Roger St Elvan Richards was employed by British-Thompson-Houston Ltd on the development of radar.

After the war he was employed as an electronic engineer in connection with rocket guiding systems. It was only on his death in 1991 that his involvement with the early development of radar became known.

Dr and Mrs F W Gibbs Computing

Awarded for outstanding individual work in computing.

Founded in 1967 in memory of Dr F W Gibbs (1914-1967), Secretary of the Royal Institute of Chemistry and Editor of the journal ‘Chemistry in Britain’. First given as the Dr F W Gibbs Science Prize. Since 1989 given as the Dr and Mrs F W Gibbs Computing Prize, in recognition of the loyal dedication of the late Mrs H T Gibbs as a founder member of the Society of Friends.

Winifred Thomas Science (Jnr)

Awarded as individual prizes to junior pupils for aptitude and promise in individual sciences.

Founded in 1989 by W D G Wilkinson (Hostel 1907-16) in memory of his sister-in-law, Winifred A Thomas (1905-1938).

R E M Meredith Physics (Snr)

Awarded to a senior pupil for excellence in Physics.

Founded in 1974 in memory of R E M Meredith (1900-1972). R E M Meredith (School House 1917-18) left school to become a pharmaceutical chemist. Though in school for only for a year, he regularly attended Old Breconian dinners and stayed in contact with his OB peers.

Awarded to Katie Zhao (U6)

O L Hughes Chemistry (Snr)

Awarded to a senior pupil for excellence in Chemistry.

Founded in 1946 in memory of O L Hughes (1909-1945). Until 1953 awarded as the O L Hughes Memorial Prize. Affectionately known as ‘Oscar’, O L Hughes (School House 1919-27) left school for Balliol College, Oxford. Having achieved a First in Natural Sciences, he was a Research Fellow and studied in Germany before returning to his old school for two years to teach Chemistry.

Dr James Powell Biology (Snr)

Awarded to a senior pupil for excellence in Biology.

Founded in 1953 in memory of Dr James Powell (1886-1945). James Powell (Morton’s 1900-04), one of three brothers to attend Christ College, won his Rugby Football Colours at school in 1903. He left school to study medicine at St Mary's Hospital, London. After qualifying and working in his hometown of Aberdare, he was for 25 years a GP in Sennybridge.

Awarded to Freddie Melzer (U6)

Dr John B Cook Science

Awarded for improvement in Trilogy (Dual) Science in the GCSE years.

Founded in 2025 by his family in memory of Dr John B Cook (1940-2023), Headmaster 1973-82. Appointed at the age of 32 from Haileybury where he was Head of Science, Dr Cook was an innovator and moderniser at a time of transition in education. He is warmly recalled by former pupils as someone who saw the best in them and wanted the best for them.

At Haileybury he developed Combined Science as an O Level. The qualification was subsequently recognised by the exam boards and the concept eventually evolved into Dual Science GCSE.

Lady Brecon Natural History

Founded by Lady Brecon in 1965 to mark the opening of the Cartwright building (now the Languages Faculty building), which included the school’s first dedicated Biology Labs.

Originally awarded for good work in the study of Natural History. Now awarded to a pupil who has shown a consistent, authentic interest in the natural world and demonstrated outstanding dedication to improving their understanding of life in all its forms.

Dr and Mrs John Sharp Art

Awarded for exceptional and talented work in Art.

Founded in 1973 by Dr John Sharp (Headmaster 1962-71) and his wife, Jean, on the occasion of their leaving Christ College. Dr Sharp was the first non-classicist to be appointed Headmaster in the history of Christ College. He later served as Chairman of the Governors (1993-99).

Janet Morgan Academic Music

Awarded for excellence in academic Music.

Founded in 1966 in the name of Mrs J T Morgan by her husband, J Trevil Morgan, Company Director of David Morgan in Cardiff and a Governor of Christ College. Originally the Janet Morgan Sight-Reading Prize, it was the first specialist music prize to be given in Prize Day.

Awarded to Louisa Cliffe (U6)

Colin Ross Instrumental

Awarded for excellence in instrumental music.

Founded in 1979 by C A C Ross, composer and organist. Colin Ross (Day Boy 1921-27) left school to become the assistant organist at Brecon Cathedral at the age of sixteen. He studied conducting and composition at the Royal Academy of Music. Amongst others, he held posts as organist and choirmaster at St Paul's Cathedral in Melbourne, Australia and the Cathedral Church of St Nicholas in Newcastle.

Awarded to Moriaki Tsutsumi (U6)

Perpetual Challenge Music Cup

Awarded to an individual musician for allround musical excellence and consistent contribution to the musical life of the school. Originally a House Music Cup, awarded to an individual since 2005.

Awarded to Kurumi Tajiri (U6)

The Perpetual Challenge Cup was presented in 1957 by Aberhonddu Male Voice Choir in memory of two of its members, Old Breconians

L H Sefton (Day Boy 1936-37) and R C Scholefield (Day Boy 1935-40) who were killed in action in the Second World War.

L H Sefton, a 21-year-old wireless operator posted to an RAF night bomber unit, was killed on the night of 17 August 1943 when his aircraft was one of 40 lost in a bombing raid.

20-year-old R C Scholefield, serving with the Nottinghamshire Yeomanry attached to the Royal Armoured Corps, landed in Normandy before D-Day. He was killed when his tank was destroyed on 2 August 1944.

Lord Brecon Singing

Awarded for excellence in solo singing.

Founded in 1979 in memory of Lord Brecon (1905-1976), Governor and Benefactor. After a career in local politics, Lord Brecon was appointed as Minister of State for Welsh Affairs from 1957-64. For four decades he endowed the Lord Brecon Scholarship. The Lord Brecon Classroom Block, opened in 1981, is named in his honour.

Cathedral Singers

Awarded for excellence in choral and solo singing.

Founded in 1987 by the Cathedral Singers at Brecon Cathedral.

Awarded to Roshan Din (L6)

Stuart Hockey Choir Prize

Awarded for excellence in leadership of the Chapel Choir.

Founded in 1999 by Mr S W Hockey (Headmaster 1986-96) on his retirement from Christ College. As well as overseeing the introduction of girls to Christ College, SWH was also a driving force in ensuring recognition of a wider range of school activities on Prize Day, including music.

Awarded to Ella Ling (U6)

Catharine Bishop Drama

Awarded to the pupil who has contributed most throughout the year to the school’s drama.

Founded in 1987 by Francis L P de Winton in the name of his daughter, Catharine Bishop, who succeeded her father as a Governor. Serving from 1981 to 1989, a period of transition and change in the school, Catharine Bishop continued the line of de Winton governors that extended back to 1855.

Awarded for sustained progress and aptitude in academic Drama.

Extended Project Prize

Awarded to a pupil who has completed an outstanding Extended Project.

Founded in 2016.

Awarded to Ella Ling (U6)

Harvard Book Prize

Given by the Havard Book Club of London since 2000. The selected publication from the Havard University Press is awarded to an outstanding student “who displays excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields”.

Awarded to Laragh Epstein (U6)

Lord Atkin Essay

Awarded annually since 1960 to the writer of a cogently argued persuasive essay. Now awarded for the most outstanding paper delivered at the Senior Head’s Essay Society.

The Lord Atkin Essay Prize is named in honour of James R Atkin (School House 1879-85). While at school, ‘Dick’ Atkin was a regular speaker at the Debating Society and claimed numerous Classics Prizes. He was also a sportsman of some distinction.

He had a distinguished career in Law, becoming a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary (1928). His judgements are regarded as models of clarity and good sense, and many still influence current law.

Jon Williams 7-a-side Rugby Cup

Awarded for significant commitment and contribution to the Rugby VII.

Given in 2004 by Jon R Williams (Staff 19862003). As well as teaching Economics and being Housemaster of School House Blue and St David’s House (1989-2001), JRW coached the Rugby XV and Rugby VII from 1987 to 1999.

Awarded to Aled Skyrme (U6)

John Morgan Rugby

Awarded for significant commitment and contribution to the Rugby XV.

Founded in 1992 in memory of John D Morgan (1939-1991) who was a Day Boy at Christ College from 1949 to 1958.

Awarded to William Thomas (U6)

Ewart Morgan Cricket

Awarded for significant commitment and contribution to the Cricket XI.

Founded in 1987 by Ewart D Morgan (Day Boy 1913-17). First awarded for ‘Games’. Awarded as a Cricket prize from 1992 in conjunction with the Rugby prize founded in the name of his son, John D Morgan.

Awarded to Jack Ryan (U6)

Adams Cup for the Boys Hockey Player of the Year

Given in 2007 by Steven A Adams (Donaldson's 1993-98) who joined the staff to teach Maths and coach hockey (Staff 2002-09).

Awarded to Campbell Cullum (U6)

Gwyn Davies Memorial Trophy

Awarded for outstanding commitment and contribution to boys sport at Christ College.

Given in 1995 in memory of Gwyn Davies, parent of P Davies (School House Red 1984-92) and G A R Davies (School House Red 1987-94), who spent many hours on the touchlines encouraging school teams and supporting them with knowledgeable enthusiasm.

Awarded to William Thomas (U6)

Suzy Thomas Prize for the Girls Hockey Player of the Year

Founded in 2007. Named in 2024 for Suzy Thomas (de Winton 1995-97) in recognition of her committed leadership as Captain of the Girls Hockey XI (1996/97) and her continuing hockey career. Suzy captained the XI to its first victory at the South Powys Tournament and at its first appearance at National Finals in 1997.

For more than 20 years she has represented Cardiff and Met Hockey Club (previously Cardiff Athletic), and has been capped for Wales as a member of Wales Masters.

Awarded to Tilly Corbett (U6)

Lynne Webber Netball Cup

Awarded for significant commitment and contribution to the Netball VII.

Given by in 2003 by Lynne Webber (Staff 19892017). LW taught PE and coached netball for nearly two decades before her retirement from Christ College in 2017. With her husband, Chris, LW was Houseparent of Alway (1991-98). She was Senior Mistress and the first Housemistress (1998-2010) of Donaldson’s House when it became a girls House in 1998.

Mary Hockey Girls Games Cup

Awarded for outstanding commitment and contribution to girls sport at Christ College.

Given in 1997 by Mrs Mary Hockey, wife of Mr S W Hockey (Headmaster 1985-96). A great supporter of co-education at Christ College, Mrs Hockey had a particular interest in encouraging opportunities for girls to participate in sport.

Community Prizes

Major J R N Williams CCF

Awarded for commitment to and leadership of the Christ College CCF.

Founded in 1975 in memory of J R N Williams (1904-1973). JRNW (Master 1929-65) taught French at Christ College for 37 years, and also holds the singular distinction of being the only Master to have been a Housemaster in all three boys Houses: School House (1931-36); Donaldson’s (1936-46); Orchard (1946-60). Throughout his career at Christ College he coached cricket, rugby and athletics. He served in the Christ College CCF for 21 years, and was its Contingent Commander from 1941 to 1957.

Awarded to Army - Olliver Dorise-Turrall (U6)

Richard Evans Endeavour Prize

Awarded to a pupil who has overcome significant challenge and acted as a role model to others facing difficulties.

Founded in 1989 in memory of Richard D Evans (1971-1989) by his family. ‘RD’ (School House Red 1982-89) played a busy part in a wide range of activities, including playing sport and joining D of E expeditions with great gusto. His ebullient cheerfulness made him the centre of a wide circle of friends in School House Red and throughout the school. Few knew that a serious heart condition should have restricted his activities.

Alexander McIlroy Cup for Courage

Awarded to a pupil who has shown outstanding bravery and courage in the face of significant barriers to their academic and personal progress.

Given in 2013 in memory of Alexander G McIlroy (1998-2013) by his family. An avid Liverpool FC supporter with a wicked sense of humour, Alexander (Orchard 2010-13) showed extraordinary bravery and courage during his terminal illness. He is remembered with deep fondness by his friends in Alway and Orchard and throughout the school.

Mervyn Bourdillon Memorial Cup

Awarded to a pupil who by hard work and enthusiasm attains high standards.

Given in 2003 in memory of Mervyn Bourdillon (1924-2002) who was a Governor at Christ College. He was an independent member of Brecknockshire and served as a JP. He also served as High Sheriff of Breconshire in 1970 and as Lord Lieutenant of Powys (1986-98).

Awarded to the girl in Middle School who has made significant improvement in all areas of school life over the course of the academic year.

Given in 1997 by Denise Worsley (Staff 199597). As well as teaching Maths and coaching netball and hockey, DW was the first Houseparent of Bannau, the house on Orchard Street into which Middle School girls arrived when Christ College became fully coeducational in 1995.

Awarded to the boy in Middle School who has made significant improvement in all areas of school life over the course of the academic year.

Founded in 2012. Named in 2024 for Mr D P Jones (Headmaster 1996-2007) in recognition of his personal belief in care and encouragement, and his active leadership in bringing out the best in individuals.

Baroness Finlay Prize for service to the community

Awarded for outstanding contribution and initiative in the wider community.

Founded in 2009 by Baroness Finlay of Llandaff, who was guest speaker at Prize Day 2009. Baroness Finlay is an Honorary Professor of Palliative Medicine and an Independent Crossbench member of the House of Lords. She is a past president of the Royal Society of Medicine.

Revd Dr Daryll Evans Chapel Prize

Awarded to the pupil who has contributed most throughout the year to the life of the Chapel.

Founded in 1998 in memory of Revd J D Evans (1939-1995). JDE (Chaplain 1992-95) was a distinguished academic with many publications to his credit. As Chaplain at Christ College, he inspired with scholarly humour and Christian kindness. Prior to his appointment in 1992, he had been Head of Science Education at Cardiff Institute of Higher Education, an Open University Tutor, and for nine years Priest in charge of the Parishes of Mamhilad with Llanfihangel Pontymoel.

W A G Howell Prize

Awarded to the Head of School.

Founded in 1971 in memory of W A G Howell (1891-1976). W A G Howell (Hostel 1907-11) was a sportsman of distinction while at school, playing for the XV and the Hockey and Cricket XIs. He served as a Second Lieutenant in the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry during the First World War.

A graduate of Keble College, Oxford, he rejoined his old school as a Master (1920-59). As well as teaching Classics, he coached Rugby and Cricket and played an important part in the development of the Old Breconian Association in the post-war years.

Dean Rose Bowl

Awarded to the Head of School

Given in 1998 by the parents of Sara Dean (de Winton 1995-97), Deputy Head of School 1996/97. Though there were Heads of de Winton since its opening in 1987, Sara was the first girl to hold a more senior role.

The Dean Rose Bowl was traditionally given to female Deputy Heads and female Heads of School. It is now awarded annually to the female joint Head of School, linking the current generation to the story of co-education at Christ College.

The House Competition

The annual House Competition challenges pupils across eighteen events that represent all areas of the Second Curriculum.

Some events such as Sports Day and House Drill are also the focus of our celebrated Spirit Days, when parents and pupils come together to support House and School in a spirit of connectedness. These competitions are greatly valued by our pupils, and this spirit also runs through the wider ethos of the school.

The 2026 winners of the House Competition will be announced during today’s proceedings.

Alison Hembrow Cup

Awarded to the girls House that achieves the highest points in the year’s House Competition.

Given in 1999 by Alison M Hembrow (Staff 1987-99). AMH was the first full-time female teacher at Christ College and taught History for 12 years. She was also the first Tutor in de Winton, the first Senior Mistress, and the first girls hockey coach and netball coach. A talented hockey player herself, with enthusiasm and dedication she encouraged participation of all girls in sport.

Bernard Tillyard Cup

Awarded to the boys House that achieves the highest points in the year’s House Competition.

Given in 1961 in memory of B G Tillyard (19221943). B G Tillyard (Hostel 1932-39) left school for Oxford. During the Second World War, he was commissioned into the South Wales Borderers. Attached to the 1st Battalion King’s Shropshire Light Infantry, he embarked for North Africa in February 1943 for the latter stages of the Tunisian campaign. On 24 April 1943, 20-year-old Lieutenant B G Tillyard MiD was killed in action.

Simon A Spencer House Plate

Awarded to the House that achieves the highest overall points in the House Competition.

Given in 2023 in memory of Simon A Spencer (1961-2020) in recognition of his personal ethos of commitment, participation and achievement. S A Spencer (School House Red 1972-79) returned to Christ College to teach English (Staff 1985-2016). As well as coaching rugby and cricket, he was Housemaster of Donaldson’s (1989-95) and Orchard (2001-04), and Deputy Head (2004-16). From 2017 to 2020 he was Founding Head at our sister school in Malaysia, King Henry VIII College.

The Foundation

The Christ College Foundation is the main school charity established to hold funds to secure the long-term future of the school and to support the school’s ambitions.

The funds of the Foundation grow because of donations made by Old Breconians and their families, and by parents and benevolent friends of Christ College. Thanks to their generosity, we are able to offer life-changing Bursaries to motivated and talented young people who may not otherwise be able to join the school. In this academic year, the Foundation has enabled the award of 75 bursaries, including 25 to new pupils.

In September 2025 we were similarly able to award Scholarships to 11 new Sixth Formers and 15 younger pupils in recognition of their excellence and talent. These new scholars joined those already supported through the Foundation. They include Academic Scholars, All-Round Scholars and Sports Scholars as well as Scholars with specialisms in Music, Art and Drama.

With the imposition of VAT on school fees, the Foundation has played an important part in helping to ease the burden on parents. To continue its work in supporting the school, the Foundation needs your support more than ever.

Bishop Lloyd Scholar

Awarded to a L6 scholar for a high level of academic scholarship in a specific area.

Revd Daniel Lewis Lloyd (Headmaster 1879-90), later appointed Bishop of Bangor, was committed to encouraging high academic standards in young people. As well as being a scholarly Classicist, he was also a great moderniser and widened the curriculum to include the study of science and actively encouraged participation in sport. The Bishop Lloyd Scholar is named in recognition of Bishop Lloyd’s transformative influence on Christ College during its Victorian re-foundation.

I am studying Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Psychology. These subjects have helped me develop a real passion for science, particularly human biology and medical science. I also take pride in representing the school in cricket and hockey, honing my leadership, teamwork, and resilience. Looking to the future, I aspire to pursue my studies in science and study Medicine at university. I am extremely grateful for the strong academic foundation Christ College has given me, helping me build on my ability to articulate and evaluate scientific ideas through independent research. I am honoured to be named the 2026/27 Bishop Lloyd Scholar and look forward to contributing to the school community with pride in my final year at Christ College.

Lord Atkin Scholar

Awarded to a L6 scholar for high academic achievement, and excellence in critical thinking and oracy.

James R Atkin (School House 1879-85) left Christ College with scholarship to Magdalen College, Oxford. He was called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn. At the relatively young age of 45 he became a judge of the King’s Bench of the High Court, and later a Lord of Appeal. The importance of many of his judgements make him universally known in the world of law. Lord Atkin is perhaps our most distinguished Old Breconian. The Lord Atkin Scholar is named in recognition of Lord Atkin’s distinguished career as an advocate and judge.

I am studying History, English, Religious Studies, and French. These subjects have enabled me to develop a deepening literary, historical, and cultural awareness. Taking part in the Debating Society and Head’s Essay Society has similarly offered me the chance to discuss contemporary topics and understand different viewpoints and allowed me to practice critical thinking and improve my public speaking skills. I also enjoy a range of extra-curricular opportunities, such as LAMDA, hockey, netball, cross-country, Chapel Choir and playing the clarinet. I am very grateful to the school for all these opportunities and feel honoured to be named the Lord Atkin Scholar for 2026/27.

Emma Taylor Scholar

Awarded to a L6 scholar for excellence in at least one area of the curriculum and a high level of commitment to school life.

The Emma Taylor Scholar is named for E L C Taylor who was the school’s first female Head (Head 2007-17). In her ten years as Head of Christ College, ELCT oversaw a number of changes including the development of the Faculty structure and the construction of the Hubert Jones Science Centre and Y Neuadd Goffa. An avid believer in the importance of high standards in an all-round education, she was also responsible for a radical overhaul of School Colours in 2008 to reward all-round commitment to school life as well as excellence in one area.

I am studying History, English Literature and Economics, and take part in many extracurricular activities, including the Head’s Essay Society, the Debating Society, Choir, hockey and music. In the Head’s Essay Society, I have been able to explore my interest in History through intellectually engaging discussion. The Debating Society has strengthened my ability to articulate arguments, including in competitions such as the Cambridge debate. I am incredibly grateful for the support I have received, which has allowed me to participate in so many aspects of school life. I am honoured to be named the Emma Taylor Scholar, and I look forward to representing the school with pride in my final year.

Awarded to a L6 sports scholar for excellence in their chosen sport and a high level of commitment to school sport.

The Phil Skinner Sports Scholar is named for Phil Skinner (Donaldson’s 1977-82) and given in recognition of his active support and generosity. Phil Skinner left school to join the family business and is Managing Director of Ron Skinner & Sons. As an ardent fan of all sports, he has long been a friend to Christ College and an enthusiastic supporter of sport at the school.

I am studying BTEC Sport, Physics and English Literature. Sport has always been a key part of my life, with my main sports being cricket and hockey. The support of the coaches and teachers, the facilities and outdoor spaces at Christ College have all allowed me to flourish and push myself to achieve my goals. I have played representative cricket for Glamorgan and Wales since I was thirteen. Though the competitive, high-pressure environment can often be difficult to manage, the encouraging nature of the school has helped me find perseverance during difficulties - not just in sport but all aspects of life. I am extremely grateful to be named the Phil Skinner Sports Scholar. I intend to carry the skills taught through sport into future life, where I aspire to study Engineering whilst continuing to play competitive sport.

Hugh Phillips Music Scholar

Awarded to a L6 Music Scholar for musical excellence and a high level of commitment to school music.

The Hugh Phillips Music Scholar is named for W Hugh Phillips (School House Blue 1952-59) in recognition of his active support and generosity. Hugh Phillips left school to study at the Cardiff University School of Optometry. After joining his father’s practice in 1964, he built up optometry practices across Gwent. He also served as a magistrate for more than 25 years, and as High Sheriff of Gwent in 2010. He has long been a friend to the school and a devoted supporter of music at Christ College.

Hugh Phillips Music Scholar is Roshan Din

I am studying Music, Biology, Chemistry and Maths. Christ College has offered me the opportunity to learn singing, bassoon, and music theory. Since I started singing at the age of eight, music has been an important part of my life. One of the things I enjoy most at school is taking part in Chapel Choir and the Chamber Choir, as well as wind band. These choirs and ensembles allow for plenty of opportunities for enjoying music with others, making my love for music extend beyond solo work. Receiving a named scholarship is a real honour. I am truly grateful for this recognition, and I am excited to continue my musical journey in my final year at Christ College.

Old Breconian Association

The OBA welcomes new Old Breconians.

Founded in 1888 and with members in over 55 countries, the OBA facilitates contact and communication between Old Breconians of any age and any geographical location. Unless they have chosen otherwise, all Leavers become OBA members. The OBA aims to ensure its members are able to enjoy the benefits of Christ College for the rest of their lives, providing opportunities for support and enduring friendship.

The School Motto

‘Believe to Achieve’ is the inspirational phrase used on many Christ College communications, from headed notepaper to the school website and on social media hashtags. It embodies the determination, talent and skill at the heart of the year’s accomplishments, many of which are being celebrated today.

In fact, the phrase is a contemporary version of a translation of the Latin school motto introduced to Christ College by the Revd Daniel Lewis Lloyd (Headmaster 1878-1890) and inscribed on the school’s armorial bearings: ‘possunt quia posse videntur’. It is usually translated as variations on “They achieve because they believe they can” or “They are able because they are seen to be able”.

At first glance, the words seem to celebrate self-belief and individual ambition, but the original meaning of the Latin motto tells a more collective story.

Taken from Book V of Virgil’s ‘Aeneid’, the line appears during a description of an intensely fought rowing race between two competing crews. As one of the teams begins to flag, the roar of the crowd

encourages the exhausted rowers to believe they are capable of more, spurring them on to achieve what had seemed out of reach.

In Virgil’s epic poem, the spectators become part of the victory itself; the race is transformed from a test of isolated endurance into a shared achievement. The rowers are not driven solely by personal conviction; the whole crew is lifted to victory by the energy and encouragement of the crowd surrounding them.

The story of the motto, and therefore of ‘Believe to Achieve’, reframes success not as an individual pursuit but as something strengthened by community. Though talent, preparation and determination will always matter, Virgil’s line is a reminder that encouragement, teamwork and collective belief is just as powerful.
