Steve Cope While many of the paintings resemble the places they depict, they are a combination of different photographs, drawings, memories and dreams that all come together to create the finished painting. During the process of making the paintings, I add things, move things and take things away. It could be trees, rocks, cactus or entire sections. I may scratch the whole side of a painting, and then insert something completely new. I also just plain make stuff up, adding whole passages to transition from place to place. Occasionally, quotations from Master paintings have been inserted into the paintings as a nod to how great those painters were. For example a tree from the Hudson River School painter, Albert Bierstadt, can be seen on the left in “Rift”. “Track”, based on Lake George in upstate New York, is many different places, for example the rock on the right is from the Olympia Mountain Range in Washington State. At first glance I’d like them to be convincing, even though they are pieced together. Then with a bit of time perhaps you notice they are a little different, but with an equivalent beauty to our planet.
