As I reflect on my first semester as dean of the College of Health Professions, I am pleased to share this issue of the College of Health Professions newsletter that highlights the collective achievements, scholarship, and service of our faculty, students, and alumni. The achievements outlined in this edition of the newsletter serve as evidence of the meaningful work taking place across our college that reinforces our mission to improve the public’s health
Just as I have witnessed every day since becoming dean in September, this newsletter features articles that showcase innovative teaching, impactful research, and strategic initiatives shaping the future of health professions education in the College of Health Professions at Pace University. These stories reflect our shared commitment to academic excellence, experiential learning, and the preparation of graduates who are ready to practice and to lead in complex and evolving healthcare environments
I am especially proud to recognize the many awards and honors earned by members of our CHP community. These recognitions in teaching, scholarship, leadership, and service affirm the quality of our work and the national and regional reputation of the College of Health Professions. This issue highlights faculty and student publications and presentations that contribute to the advancement of knowledge and evidencebased practice across the health professions. The scholarship represented here embodies our role as educators and thought leaders whose work informs practice, policy, and population health outcomes.
You will also find examples of our significant engagement with the communities we serve. Through clinical practice, service-learning, partnerships, and outreach, we are addressing the health needs of our community while living out Pace’s mission of Opportunitas
Finally, I am inspired by the accomplishments and experiences of our faculty, students, and alumni featured in this newsletter Their professional achievements and leadership in their professions demonstrate the enduring value of a College of Health Professions education and the strength of our alumni network. Elijah A.J. Salzer, DMSc, PA-C, NYSAFE, C-EFM, CAQ-OBGYN was recognized by the New York State Society of Physician Associates (NYSSPA) with the Paul Lombardo, MPS, PA-C Emeritus Educator of the Year Award as part of the 2025 NYSSPA Awards, honoring outstanding service to patients, the community, the profession, and PA education.
In addition, Dr Salzer has been elected to a three-year term as president of the LGBT PA Caucus, beginning July 1 as president-elect
Further highlighting his professional impact, Dr. Salzer’s biography was recently included in the Physician Assistant History Society, with publication released on December 1.

The Pace University-Lenox Hill Hospital Physician Assistant program was recognized by the New York State Society of Physician Associates with the President’s Commendation Award, recognizing 25 years of exemplary education and leadership Jean M. Covino, DHSc, MPA, PA-C accepted the award on behalf of the program.

Our Physician Assistant program faculty and staff had a weekend full of exciting moments in October. They were delighted to attend the wedding of Elizabeth (Lizzy) Sgambelluri MPAS, MES, PA-C, PgCert. Wildlife Health, clinical assistant professor and share in her joy!
The Office of Research and Graduate Education hosted a special event recognizing Pace faculty who published books between 2020 and 2025. The event highlighted the creativity, scholarship, and impact of our faculty authors through a series of engaging presentations that shared the stories behind their work and the ideas that inspire them
Eighteen faculty, including CHP members Linda S. Carozza, PhD, CCC-SLP, FNAP, Laurice (Lauri) D. Nemetz, MA, BC-DMT, LCAT, ERYT500, C-IAYT, and Mary Opfer MS, RDN, CDN, CCMS, presented during the December 2 program, held on the Pleasantville campus.



The College of Health Professions is proud to highlight our exceptional Pace Nursing faculty who were honored at The New York Academy of Medicine’s Fellows Induction Ceremony Lin Drury, PhD, Catherine Finlayson, PhD, RN, OCN, Joanne Knoesel, PhD, RN-BC, CNE, FNAP, and Denis Tarrant, DNP, APNBC, FAANP, FNYAM were recognized for their leadership, scholarship, and contributions to advancing the health professions.

Laurice (Lauri) Nemetz, MA, BC-DMT, LCAT, ERYT500, CIAYT, received the 2025 Innovation Award from the American Dance Therapy Association at the organization’s 60th Annual Conference, held in Raleigh, NC, in November.
The award recognizes Professor Nemetz’s long standing contributions to the field of dance/movement therapy and her scholarship integrating creative arts therapies, science communication, environmental space, yoga, and anatomy.
Pace University co-hosted the Simulation User Network (SUN) Conference with Laerdal Medical Over 100 educators and simulation professionals from academic and clinical settings attended.
The event focused on interprofessional education and collaborative practice, highlighting teamwork’s role in improving healthcare outcomes. Attendees participated in hands-on workshops, interactive sessions, and panel discussions, with keynote speaker Kevin Ching, MD, Pace faculty on an IPE panel, and other educators and community members leading sessions. The conference was lead on Pace’s behalf by Patty Myers, MSEd, MT (ASCP), CLS, CHSE.


Jessica Tosto, MS, RDN, CSP, CDN, FNAP participated in a medical mission to Santa Marta, Colombia with Healing the Children Northeast, which provides needed quality medical care for underserved children throughout the world and advances medical skills
and advances medical skills and resources in developing countries, becoming the first registered dietitian nutritionist to join their volunteer team.
During the mission, she worked alongside an interprofessional medical team to provide nutrition assessment, education, and support for pediatric patients undergoing cleft lip and palate surgeries and their families, highlighting the vital role of nutrition in healing and recovery and reflecting the College of Health Professions’ commitment to global health, collaboration, and service.


Pace University has received more than $3 million from the New York State Department of Health Healthcare Education and Life-skills Program (HELP) to launch the College of Health Professions Pathways to Practice Initiative (CPPI). The five-year award (January 2026–December 2030) will strengthen the healthcare workforce pipeline across the Lower and Mid-Hudson Valley.
Led by Elizabeth Colón-Fitzgerald, EdD, CPPI was developed in collaboration with Pace faculty and staff Belinda Anderson, PhD, MA(Ed.), LAc, Denise Tahara, PhD, MPhil, MBA, Esma Paljevic, EdD, RN, CPNP, FNYAM, and Shannon Gribben, MEd, along with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center partners Margaret Barton-Burke, PhD and Annmarie Mazzella-Ebstein, PhD The initiative expands access for underrepresented students, enhances pre-health advising, and supports nursing and health sciences students as they transition into high-demand clinical roles through three integrated programs: the CHP Scholars Program, the Pre-health Advising Program, and the Student-to-Practice Program.
Center for Excellence in Healthcare Simulation has received full accreditation in human simulation from the Association of Standardized Patient Educators (ASPE), a leading authority in the field of simulationbased education. Pace is one of only 18 universities nationwide and part of ASPE’s inaugural class to receive this prestigious distinction.

An article examining the Mindfulness Challenge study at the College of Health Professions was recently published, in Journal of American College Health, highlighting a hybrid mindfulness-based intervention developed through an interprofessional education (IPE) collaboration. The study engaged nursing, physician assistant, and occupational therapy students, along with CHP faculty and staff.
Titled Developing Self-Compassion and WellBeing with a Hybrid Mindfulness-Based Intervention: Lessons Learned from Health Professions Students, Faculty, and Staff, the article was co-authored by Esma Paljevic, EdD, RN, CPNP, FNYAM; John Damiao, PhD, MS, OTR/L; Chris Amendola, MS, PA-C and Pace University faculty
The publication was also featured on page 3 of the July issue of Mindfulness Research Monthly, produced by the American Mindfulness Research Association.

Jean M. Covino, DHSc, MPA, PA-C, and Sherylyne Toque, MPA, presented a joint poster, Foundational Courses as Early Predictors of PANCE Performance at the New York State Society of Physician Assistants conference, sharing their work with colleagues from across the state and contributing to ongoing dialogue and scholarship within the PA community.
In addition, Jean M. Covino, DHSc, MPA, PA-C, and her daughter, Chelsea Covino, MSPAS, PA-C, recently published Weight loss drugs on the horizon: what pharmacists should know in Pharmacy Times



Kindred Shulgin, MS, PA-C, is a coauthor of a recently published multicenter article titled The Virtual Interview and Physician Assistant/Associate Program Diversity in the Journal of Physician Assistant Education which examines the impact of virtual interviews on diversity within physician assistant/associate programs


In addition, Kinna collaborated with Katy Luk, BBA, on the data for the poster, Remote Interviewing and Inclusivity.
Melanie Evangelista, OTR/L, BCG, presented at the Gerontological Society of America’s Annual Scientific Meeting as part of the Religious, Spirituality, and Aging Symposium. Her presentation explored death stories and examined how religion and spiritual language and practices shape the way individuals understand and narrate their experiences at the end of life.
At the conference, Melanie also received the James McKenney Student Travel Award from the Academy for Gerontology in Higher Education, for advancing student education on aging
Health care thrives on trust, compassion, and advocacy, but when professionalism slips, patient confidence can quickly erode. In a recent American Nurse feature, Mocked on TikTok: How nursing incivility erodes patient trust and compromises health outcomes, Michele Lopez, DHED, RN, MA, CNE, CHES, CDE explores how incivility and social media misuse are undermining patient dignity and the integrity of care. Lopez also offers insight into how the nursing community can rebuild respect, accountability, and trust at every level of practice.
Michele also had article, A wrecking ball is coming for America’s nursing workforce. Stop it. in Lohud.


Linda Carozza, PhD, CCC-SLP, FNAP collaborated with student Kiara Medina, BA, on a recent article, Addressing the Lack of Mentorship for Underrepresented
Faculty in Communication Science and Disorders (CSD),

examining mentorship gaps for underrepresented faculty in communication science and disorders programs. The piece was published in Hispanic Outlook on Education Magazine and highlights challenges and strategies to support professional growth and inclusion in the field.

Pace University’s College of Health Professions was proudly represented at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Convention, where faculty members showcased a successful interprofessional poster presentation The project, presented in collaboration with CHP colleague’s Ellayne Ganzfried MS, CCC-SLP, FASHA, FNAP and Cindy Paradiso PhD, RN-BC, CNE, highlighted the strength of Pace’s interdisciplinary approach to health education and research.
Jason T. Slyer, DNP, RN, FNP-BC, CNL, FNYAM, FNAP, coauthored the article Application of the PRIMENP Model in Nurse Practitioner Curriculum Development, published in the Journal of Nursing Education. The article examines the use of the PRIME-NP Model
as a framework for developing nurse practitioner curricula.

Christen Cooper, EdD, RDN published the article, Dietitians and Human Trafficking, in Today’s Dietitian magazine, extending her research on registered dietitians’ knowledge, skills, and future potential in working with human trafficking survivors.
Christen was also quoted in GQ Magazine in an article, How to gain weight the right way She emphasized that sustainable results require consistency and realistic expectations, noting that long-term progress comes from balanced nutrition, fitness, and lifestyle habits, not quick fixes or supplements.



Co-authors Erica Gollub, DrPH, MPH, and Marie Lourdes Charles, EdD, RN-BC, FNYAM, presented their poster at the STI and HIV World Congress titled Some Fear Injection, Others Don’t Want to Swallow Tablets, While Others Forget: Ugandan Health Providers’ Perspectives on PrEP Ring Introduction Among Young Mothers in Rural Settings.
Pace and Mothers and Babies Alive (BAMA) conducted six hybrid focus groups with 60 rural Ugandan health care workers to explore attitudes toward the PrEP ring and inform future training and outreach

Presentations from the STI and HIV World Congress in Montreal included work by Erica Gollub, DrPH, MPH, and co-author student Lauren Pizzella, High Interest in the PrEP (Dapivirine) Ring Among U.S. Low-Income Latina Women: Results From a Community Clinic, conducted with recent alumni from both the Health Science, BS and Health Informatics, MS programs.
Pace partnered with the Open Door Care Network in Westchester to study interest in the PrEP ring.
A collaborative project across CHP and Dyson was supported by the Pace COVID-19 Collaborative Interdisciplinary Research Award. Erica Gollub, DrPH, MPH, led the study with co-authors Joshua Mendelsohn, PhD, MSc and Min Xi, MSc, in collaboration with Dyson faculty Nils Myszkowski, PhD, and Guler Boyraz, PhD.
The team published Correlates of Higher Trust in Public Health Officials: Results from a representative cohort of private university undergraduates in Vaccine September 17 in Vaccine, examining factors associated with greater trust in public health officials among undergraduate students.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing program wrapped up the fall semester with its annual Milestone Day celebration in December on the Pleasantville Campus Faculty and students came together over breakfast as students presented poster projects highlighting their studies and research. Michele Flynch, PhD, RN, Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing alumna, has been inducted as a Fellow of The New York Academy of Medicine. Fellowship recognizes seasoned health professionals with at least 10 years of advanced training who demonstrate


exceptional contributions as clinicians, educators, researchers, administrators, or community leaders. Michelle’s induction highlights her impactful work and commitment to advancing the field

Idalina Afopa, DNP, a 2025 grad of our Doctor of Nursing Practice program, presents her work at the Nurse Practitioner Association of New York Annual Conference.
Joanne Knoesel PhD, RN-BC, CNE, FNAP
After more than 40 years of service to nursing and nursing education, Joanne retired in December 2025 from Pace University’s Lienhard School of Nursing. As chair and associate professor for the Department of Undergraduate Studies, she has shaped generations of future nurses through her teaching, leadership, and commitment to excellence
She provided instruction for undergraduate nursing, directed simulation, and led initiatives focused on educational assessment, critical thinking, and human patient simulation. Her clinical background in critical care at Lenox Hill Hospital and urgent care at NYU Student Health Center deeply informed her teaching and mentorship.
Pace University is grateful for her decades of dedication and wishes her the very best in retirement.

Alyssa Cabral, Sofia Ciani, and Giana Bello, Health Science, BS, showcased their research at the Honors Theses Poster Day in the spring, sharing the results of months of focused study Their projects reflected strong academic curiosity, clear communication skills, and a commitment to exploring topics in depth.

Thirty-four students from Pace University have been selected to participate in the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) and Millennium Campus Network (MCN) Millennium Fellowship, a highly selective global leadership development program. Students from both New York City and Pleasantville campuses representing the Dyson College of Arts and Sciences, Lubin School of Business, School of Education, Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems, and College of Health Professions were among just 4,000 students to earn the honor globally from a record-breaking pool of 60,000+ applicants across 7,500+ campuses in more than 130 countries, with just 4% of institutions selected to host fellows.

Master of Public Health student Sarah Sabboor presented her research at the New York State Public Health Association Conference.
Working with Lu Shi, PhD, Sabboor examined Racial/ethnic patterns in the Initiation of SGLT2 Inhibitors Among Medicaid Patients with Type 2 Diabetes.
The study analyzed disparities in how often patients from different racial and ethnic groups begin this medication, highlighting gaps in access and treatment that have important implications for equity in diabetes care.
Over $4 million in full-tuition scholarships was awarded to more than 200 College of Health Professions students this past year through the New York State Department of Health Career Pathways Training (CPT) program. These scholarships support students pursuing specific healthcare career paths and are designed to help expand access to care for underserved populations Recipients commit to working for three years with a New York State employer where at least 30% of the patient population is Medicaid or uninsured, ensuring that this investment directly benefits communities in need. Pace University-Lenox Hill Hospital, Physician Assistant, NYC “Pace Setters” team competed in the 2025 NYSSPA Challenge Bowl and advanced to the semifinals, showcasing strong knowledge, teamwork, and competitive spirit throughout the tournament.
Occupational Therapy students took a mindful break with a rejuvenating yoga session! They recharged their bodies and minds while learning how yoga techniques can be incorporated into OT interventions to support physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
ICYMI: The 3rd Annual Advocacy Education Day brought nursing students, educators, and healthcare professionals together at One Pace Plaza to engage in healthcare advocacy and show support for Cathy Finlayson, PhD, RN, OCN, highlighting the power of collaboration and nursing voices in shaping policy and practice.
RN4 students participated in the NSANYS 10th Annual Council of Student Leaders, hosted by Northwell Health and NSANYS. The full-day event offered valuable opportunities for networking, résumé-building tips, and hands-on internship workshops, helping students prepare for their future careers in nursing.
Nutrition and Dietetics students brought wellness to campus by making healthy smoothies and sharing their favorite recipes with commuter students in the Kessel Dean’s Lounge. The event offered a fun, interactive way to promote nutritious choices and connect with the student community.
