• 1/4 cup coconut flakes • 3 banana mashed • 1/4 cup coconut oil • 1/4 cup almond milk • 1/4 cup blueberries or raspberries • Seeds and coconut flakes to sprinkle Method Add the dates and water to a mini chopper and blitz to a paste Add all the dry ingredients to a bowl, then add the banana, date paste and almond milk. Heat the coconut oil in a saucepan on a low heat, when melted add to the bowl. Mix everything thoroughly. The mix should be slightly wet.
BANANA, DATE AND BLUEBERRY FLAPJACKS This recipe is by the wonderful Rebel Recipes... Tasty banana, date and blueberry flapjacks are super easy to make, healthy, sweet and delicious. They make a brilliant breakfast or nutritious snack. Prep: 5mins Cook: 30mins
Grease a baking tray with a little coconut oil and then add the mix, pressing into the sides. Press a few blueberries into the top of the mixture and then sprinkle over some coconut flakes and seeds. Bake in a pre-heated oven (180°C), for 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for a little before dividing into squares. I added a couple of tablespoons of dessicated coconut because we love coconut in our house!

are compound, each leaf being about 30cms (12 inches) long and divided into several leaflets. Each leaflet is leathery, shiny and spiny, looking remarkably like a holly leaf. The bright yellow flowers are borne in dense clusters 3-6 inches long and appear any time between January and March. They have a delicate perfume and are very rich in nectar, so they provide good foraging for pollinators for many weeks from winter into spring. The flowers are worked by honey bees and bumble bees on any days warm enough to bring them out of their hives (anything above 10*C). With the milder winters we have been experiencing there are more bees out in the winter, so these winter flowering plants are becoming more and more important for insects.
JANUARY IN CRESCENT GARDEN January can be a very chilly and drab month, but there are several winter flowering plants in Crescent Garden which not only bloom in winter, but have attractive perfumes. One such plant is Mahonia aquifolium. It is native to western North America from Southeast Alaska to Northern California, and is often found growing beneath pine trees. It was given this name in 1818 in memory of an Irish born nurseryman, Bernard McMahon, who settled in Philadelphia. As of 2023, however, Plants of the World Online (POWO) has classified it as Berberis aquifolium. Its common name, however, is Oregon grape; it grows wild there and was created the state plant of Oregon in 1899. The plant grows to 1-3 metres (3-10 feet) tall and can have a spread of 1.5 metres. The leaves

The fruits which follow the flowers in spring and summer look like very small black grapes (hence the common name) and provide food for many birds. They can be eaten by humans, too, though rather tart, but can be made into a tasty jelly. The juice can also be fermented to make wine, provided a large amount of sugar is used. The stems and twigs have a thick, corky bark which can, together with the roots be used to make a yellow die. The berries contain a dye which can be purple, blue pink or green depending on the acidity of the water it is in. In other words it can be used as a pH indicator. The Oregon Grape plant is very popular in parks and gardens. It grows well in shady or woodland settings; it is resistant to summer drought and tolerates poor soil. It does, therefore, grow well under the shade along terrace walk in Crescent Garden and is an easy to care for plant in any shady garden. Why not try it in yours? Therefore, the Branch are embarking on it's biggest ever project to rebuild this section of the centre to include domestic and wild bird flight aviaries, two multipurpose barns for wildlife and domestic animals and an education hub, as we believe that education is an important tool in preventing cruelty. AN INTERRUPTIBLE LIFE? A few years ago, I was travelling with my family through the Peak District in Derbyshire. It was a sunny afternoon and we were on the way home. Our two kids were quite young at the time and the winding roads made them both feel sick. So we pulled over for five minutes to let them have some fresh air. I was in full ‘grumpy dad’ mode, annoyed that our journey home was being slowed down. Twenty minutes or so after we got going again, to our surprise we came across a cyclist who had just gone over his handlebars, with no helmet on, and was lying motionless in the road in a pool of blood. The place was surprisingly deserted – just us and a couple in the car in front. We jumped out to see what had happened and found the young man in a pretty bad way, his girlfriend distraught by the side of the road. Even worse, it was on a remote road and in a mobile phone blackspot. At first, all we could do was pray for this young man, who we feared was on the brink of death. Over the next forty-five minutes, on that remote hillside, we experienced something close to a miracle. Traffic picked up – ably directed by my wife Kathryn – and a nurse, then a doctor and another nurse, stopped to help. By the time the first paramedic arrived forty-five minutes later, there was nearly a complete A&E team helping the injured young man and we were redundant. I still have the video footage of the Rescue Helicopter carefully lowering itself over the valley floor before banking to land on the narrow road running along the hillside.

I’ve often thought of that day in the years since and how, if our kids hadn’t made us stop because they felt ill, we would have been home by the time that young man came off his bike. We would have missed the opportunity to stop, help and pray for him when no-one else was around. Sometimes, the moments in life when we have the most to offer someone else seem like interruptions to us. In Luke 10, Jesus told the story of a man set upon by bandits and left for dead by the road. The religious leaders passed by but one man – who we now know as the Good Samaritan – stopped to help. He let himself and his plans be interrupted by the need of the person in front of him. In the modern world, we often start each day with every minute already accounted for. Whether in work or retirement, we cram our diaries full. Interruptions can be unwanted intrusions in our overstuffed lives. But what if, this year, we resolved to be more open to interruptions? More open to the person or situation who needs our help, even if it’s an inconvenience? This is a small, but simple way, we can practise Jesus’ command to love one another. So why not make having a more ‘interruptible’ life your resolution for 2024? As for the young man who was so dramatically airlifted off the hillside in the Peaks? I phoned the hospital the next day to discover that he’d just been discharged with only scratches. As I said, one of the closest things to a miracle I’ve experienced. Second Thursday of each month Methodist Church Hall, Mays Lane, 7.30pm. We have a variety of speakers to entertain us at these meetings, along with sub groups who meet up throughout the month to engage in fun activities.
