Of course, I wont be spending all my time sat in front of the telly! There are still lots of things to be getting out of the house for. One such thing is the annual Michaelmas Fayre! Plus there’s Heritage Open Days, with over 50 free heritage events to explore. Get walking to raise money for the Rowans, check out the Artists’ Competition in Stanley Park and get litter picking in the park and along Stokes Bay. I bought my first from the Crescent Garden Plant Sale and it’s grown ever since. So, I was thrilled when Rita’s article for thie month

landed in my inbox. It is all about Pelargonium. and you’ll find it on page 14. I’ve learnt they love being pot bound and some smell divine! I do love the summer for the warmth and the way the days feel so much longer, but my favourite food season is probably autumn. I can enjoy warming, nourishing foods and not come out in a sweat whilst cooking or eating them! Curries, daal, my favourite lasagne and chilli are all cooked on repeat from now until next May. I’ve included one of these dishes this month - a vegetarian lasagne that’s a real crowd-pleaser. I’ve made this numerous times and it never disappoints. How’s your hot tub? Does it need a clean? Recipe DELICIOUS V E G E TA R I A N LASAGNE When I went vegetarian 15 years ago, my friends had one major concern… would they ever get my lasagne again?! Thankfully, I immediately adapted my much-loved recipe to make it meat-free, and 15 years on, those cosy nights catching up over a big dish of delicious lasagne and happy friends are still going strong! Serves 6 Ingredients: • 1 onion • 1 carrot • 2 cloves garlic • 1 aubergine • 250g mushrooms • 1 small butternut squash, peeled and cut into roughly 2cm cubes, or frozen chopped butternut squash • 2 x 400g tins chopped tomatoes • 2 glasses of red wine • 2 handfuls of fresh herbs - sage, rosemary and thyme, finely chopped • Chilli flakes • Olive oil • 300g fresh lasagne sheets • Grated Parmesan • 250g grated mozzarella For the white sauce • 500ml crème fraîche • 2 handfuls grated Parmesan • A splash of milk Method Preheat your oven to 180°C/350°F/gas mark 4. If using fresh butternut squash, peel and cut it into roughly 2cm cubes. If using frozen, you can cook it straight from frozen. Spread over a baking tray, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with chilli flakes. Roast until tender and slightly caramelised. Slice the aubergine into roughly 1cm slices. Brush both sides with olive oil and roast or grill for about 10 minutes on each side, until softened.

Meanwhile, peel and finely chop the onion, garlic and carrot, and finely chop the fresh herbs. Heat about 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a large saucepan. Add the onion, garlic, carrot and herbs and cook gently for a few minutes until softened. Slice the mushrooms and add them to the pan. You may need to add another splash of oil. Cook for a few minutes until the mushrooms have softened. Add the chopped tomatoes and red wine. Bring everything to the boil, then reduce the heat and leave to simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. For the white sauce, mix the crème fraîche, a couple of handfuls of grated parmesan and a splash of milk in a bowl. Stir until you have a nice, spreadable consistency. Add a little more milk if needed. Now it’s time to layer up! Lightly brush your lasagne dish with olive oil. Start with a layer of lasagne sheets, followed by some of the mushroom and tomato mixture. Add a layer of the white sauce and a sprinkling of Parmesan, followed by the roasted butternut squash. Add another layer of lasagne sheets, then repeat with the mushroom mixture, white sauce, Parmesan and the roasted aubergine. Finish with a final layer of lasagne sheets, then spread over the remaining white sauce. Sprinkle generously with grated mozzarella and finish with a little Parmesan. Pop it in the oven and bake for 30 minutes, until bubbling and golden on top. Keep an eye on it halfway through - you may need to turn the dish if your oven cooks unevenly. If you do have any leftovers, it freezes well.

Crescent Garden I N S E PT E M B E R

Scented Pelargoniums are attractive garden plants which originate in South Africa, where there are several wild native plants from which our cultivated plants originate. Their name comes from the Greek word pelargos, meaning a stork as their seed pods are round with a long projection looking like a stork’s beak. In fact there is a wild member of the family native to this country one of whose names is storksbill. Scented Pelargoniums are more delicate than the brightly coloured bedding varieties of Pelargonium, with small flowers in clusters at the end of delicate stems. They are closer in appearance to the wild species from which they originate than their flashier cousins. The joy in growing them is in the wonderful perfumes given off by their leaves. They are best grown near a path where they may be brushed against causing the leaves to release their scent, which may be citrus ,nutmeg, pine, mint, rose, eucalyptus or many others. The perfume comes from glands on the leaf surface which release fragrant volatile compounds. Though if you should be tempted to bite into the leaves you would taste a bitter astringent chemical. In the original wild plants these strong scents and flavours would have been used to see off grazing insects and attract pollinators. They first became popular garden plants in the eighteenth century when various plant breeders crossed and recrossed the various wild plants being discovered in South Africa to create the many varieties available today, each with its own special perfume. They were very popular with the Victorians, who used them to perfume rooms, flavour butter and cream, infuse in various liquids to make scented teas, line a cake tin, make pot pourri, release geranium oil or use the flowers to decorate a cake top. They are still used in many of these ways and have remained popular garden plants for several hundred years.

Not surprisingly, given their native habitat, they prefer a warm climate, fairly dry soil which is not too rich, like sunlight or dappled shade and are not frost tolerant. In the mild climate of Crescent Garden they do well. They sometimes struggle a bit through the winter, but cuttings are taken, so that if any of the plants fail there are replacements. There are three different species of Scented Pelargoniums in the Garden, planted under the old tulip tree. Pelargonium fragrans (1800) is sometimes called the nutmeg geranium. It is a bushy little plant with small grey green crumpled leaves and tiny white flowers with red veins in the petals. The foliage releases a warm spicy fragrance reminiscent of nutmeg, balsam and pine. Pelargonium Lady Plymouth (1800) or P. Graveolens (1774). P. Lady Plymouth has deeply lobed grey green leaves edged with a narrow band of white. The perfume is sometimes described as eucalyptus and sometimes roses/fresh mint/lemon. On our plant the variegated leaves have reverted to plain green, however, making it P. graveolens, from which it was bred. This is a very old species from which many other lemon scented species were bred. Pelargonium tomentosum (1790) has a strong peppermint scent and is the origin of all mint smelling varieties. It has large heart shaped velvety leaves with white borders and small clusters of tiny white flowers. So, a very interesting group of plants, which you might like to add to your garden. If you choose to come and look at them in Crescent Garden and feel tempted to touch the leaves to try and release the perfume, please do so VERY carefully as our plants are not very large to bear such treatment.

Rowans Hospice’s Shining Stars Walk Returns for an Unforgettable Night of Remembrance, Community and Fundraising Rowans Hospice is bringing back its much-loved Shining Stars Walk on Saturday, 26 September 2026. Whether walking in memory of a loved one, supporting local hospice care, or simply enjoying a special evening, participants can expect a memorable night of reflection, celebration and community spirit. Starting at 7pm from HMS Temeraire, walkers can choose a 4-mile or 8-mile route along Portsmouth’s iconic waterfront, taking in landmarks including the Spinnaker Tower and HMS Warrior. New for 2026, participants can dedicate a personalised star projected onto one of Portsmouth’s most iconic buildings as a unique tribute.

Entertainment, starting at 5pm, will add to the atmosphere, while HMS Warrior will once again open exclusively for participants to light a candle and remember loved ones. The Hospice hopes to raise £70,000 to support specialist care across South East Hampshire. Tickets cost £27 for adults and £12 for children (free for under 3’s), including a commemorative t-shirt, refreshments and a finisher’s medal. Do you have important legal documents in place to protect your interests and make life easier for you and your family, whatever the future brings? If your family member needed to make decisions for you, instead of just acting on your instructions, they would need your formal written authority to do this. Formal authority can be given by creating a Lasting Power of Attorney. This document will allow your family member to take over managing your money, either temporarily or long term. You can also create a Lasting Power of Attorney which allows your family member to make decisions for you about medical treatment, if you are unable for any reason to make your own decisions. This is not the same as an Advance Decision, which is a document which sets out your decision to refuse medical treatment in the future, under specific conditions.

If you are caring for an elderly relative, or are likely to be doing so in the future, a Lasting Power of Attorney will mean that you can provide the support your relative needs and access services on their behalf, without the difficulties, stress and resistance you would otherwise encounter. Having a Will gives you peace of mind that your money, property and personal possessions will be going to the people you have chosen to benefit. An out of date Will can cause problems within the family or mean that a chosen beneficiary receives nothing. Green Flag AWA R D AND ARTISTS COMPETITION

The Friends of Stanley Park and the Gosport Borough Council team are very proud to announce that yet again we have been awarded the Green Flag Award. This scheme recognises and rewards wel-l managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the UK and around the world. For those of you reading this who have never visited Stanley Park, it is situated off Western Way, Gomer Lane and also Stokes Bay Road. This tranquil and serene area is Gosport's largest formal park and is well know locally for its splendid floral displays.

We still collect old car/caravan batteries, electrical cable, copper piping etc. for recycling, and the monies are then put back into the park. Please contact us via our Facebook page and we will collect. We would like to increase our active group of volunteers, so if you love the park and want to give just that little bit more, please get in touch.

Located near to the Seafront, Stanley Park is extremely popular in the summer months, where families come to picnic and spend time enjoying the sunshine. We are a very small team of volunteers (10 plus a few dogs) so our activities are very restricted. For example we hold a litter pick and park tidy up on the first Sunday of the month at 10am, meeting in the Alverbank car park. This year, as well as litter picks we are planning to add some colour to the old toilet block with a couple of murals and, very excitingly, an Artists Competition Day on Sunday 13th September. 15 Local artists have registered and will be spread out throughout the park, having four hours to complete a painting, then present them in the Alverbank Hotel to be judged. Please put this date in your diaries and come along - 10am-2pm.

From a Simple Toy Swap to a Symbol of Community Spirit

cleared the field to make it safe. For a while, it seemed the project might not survive.

What began as one dog owner's simple idea to encourage play and conversation has become one of Gosport's most heartwarming community stories. Charlie’s Toy Trade Box, created by local resident Amberley Orchard, has grown from a homemade dog toy exchange into a much-loved meeting point for local dog walkers.

Then came an extraordinary act of kindness. A mystery supporter named Dave, who had no previous connection to Amberley or the project, built a beautiful new wooden toy box entirely at his own expense. He also filled it with brand-new toys, treats and dog food and installed a water butt and drinking bowl.

Inspired by walks with her 4kg companion Charlie, Amberley created the box after noticing that although many dogs used the nearby field, few stopped to play or chat. She wanted to create somewhere that encouraged both dogs and their owners to connect. The box officially opened on 9 March 2026 and is completely free to use - take a toy, swap one or donate if you can. The idea quickly became much more than a toy exchange. Friendships formed, evening dog walks were organised and people who had previously walked alone began stopping to chat. For some, the field became an important place to help manage loneliness and anxiety. Residents began donating toys, treats and accessories, but sadly the box was also subjected to repeated vandalism, including arson. Charlie was injured by broken glass while Amberley, her partner and another dog walker

Today, the new box stands proudly in the field, while money raised through a JustGiving appeal will help keep it stocked and maintained. The project remains completely free and continues to welcome donations. For Amberley, the real success isn't the box itself, but the friendships, kindness and sense of community it has created. What started as a small idea inspired by a much-loved little dog has become a wonderful reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference.
