SATURDAY, MAY 1 ST, 2027 ANAHEIM MARRIOTT
Dear Friends, As parents, we know nothing matters more than our children’s health and well-being. When families walk through the doors of Rady Children’s Health Orange County (Rady Children’s), formerly CHOC, they entrust an extraordinary team with their care during some of life’s most hopeful, challenging, and defining moments. Our family has witnessed firsthand the expert, compassionate care that makes Rady Children’s so special. We’ve walked alongside other parents facing uncertainty, seen fear met with reassurance, and watched remarkable healing unfold through the dedication of caregivers who treat every child as their own. Those experiences have deepened our commitment to the organization’s mission and inspired us to serve as Chairs of the 2027 CHOC Gala. For 18 years, the Gala has united community leaders, advocates, caregivers, grateful families, and supporters around a shared purpose: ensuring every child has access to exceptional care. Together, this community has raised more than $49 million to advance groundbreaking research, innovative treatments, and life-changing programs for children across Southern California. On May 1, 2027, we invite you to join us at the Anaheim Marriott for the 18th Annual CHOC Gala. This year’s theme celebrates the strength of families, the dedication of caregivers, and the power of a community that surrounds children with hope. It reflects the bonds that carry families through their most difficult moments and our shared belief that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive. Throughout the evening, you’ll hear inspiring stories of courage, resilience, and healing, enjoy exceptional entertainment and dining, and witness the profound impact philanthropy has on the lives of children and families. These stories remind us that behind every breakthrough, every treatment, and every recovery is a child, a family, and a community that made it possible. Today, more than 2.5 million children across four counties rely on Rady Children’s for expert care. Every gift helps ensure families receive the compassionate, world-class care they need today while advancing the innovations and discoveries that will transform care for generations to come. We hope you’ll join us for this special evening as we celebrate the strength of families, the power of community, and the brighter future we can create together for children. If you have questions about attending, contact us at gala@choc.org.

JAZLYN | THYROID CANCER SURVIVOR What began as a persistent sore throat during a family vacation led to a life-changing diagnosis for 10-year-old Jazlyn. After her doctor discovered a lump in her neck, testing at Rady Children’s revealed thyroid cancer. Following two surgeries, her care team successfully removed the cancer, and Jazlyn’s prognosis was excellent. Wanting to understand why a child had developed thyroid cancer, endocrinologist Dr. Himala Kashmiri recommended genetic testing. The results revealed DICER1 syndrome, a rare genetic condition that increases the risk of tumors. The diagnosis also led Jazlyn’s mother and sister to discover they carried the same mutation, allowing them to receive ongoing monitoring and preventive care. Today, Jazlyn is disease-free and thriving as a high school senior. A color guard member and peer mentor club president, she is looking forward to college, travel, and new opportunities. Her story highlights the power of expert care, early detection, and genetic testing to protect not only one child, but an entire family.

BELLE | NEUROBLASTOMA SURVIVOR No child should have to battle cancer. But then, cancer hasn’t encountered someone quite like Belle. In spring 2023, Belle experienced mild back pain that became excruciating within a week. After an MRI at the Hyundai Cancer Institute at Rady Children’s, Belle and her family were told that she had neuroblastoma—her nerve cells had grown uncontrollably, forming two cancerous tumors in her neck and spine that pressed on her spinal cord. Rady Children’s teams acted fast, performing emergency surgery to remove the tumor from Belle’s spine. Admitted to the cancer institute, Belle’s chemotherapy treatments affected her red blood cells and she needed nine blood transfusions. Thankfully, Belle rang the cancer bell in September of 2024. Thanks to the expert care and compassion from Rady Children’s—and aided by philanthropic support—each day brought new moments of joy to Belle’s family, even during a difficult medical journey.

KALI | NEUROLOGICAL DISORDER AND STRABISMUS SURVIVOR When Kali was just 2 months old, she began having seizures and was brought to Rady Children’s Hospital Orange County. Doctors diagnosed her with two serious neurological conditions as well as severe strabismus, a condition that caused her eyes to cross. Her care team quickly developed a treatment plan designed to give her the best chance at a healthy future. As medication helped control her seizures, Kali underwent specialized eye surgeries performed by Dr. Rahul Bhola and received ongoing care from a dedicated team that became a familiar part of her life. When it became clear that brain surgery offered the best path forward, she was placed in the care of neurosurgeon Dr. Joffre Olaya. The intricate eight-hour surgery was a success. Today, Kali has been free from both seizures and strabismus since 2021 and is thriving as she approaches her sixth birthday. Full of energy and possibility, she is enjoying the kind of active, happy childhood that once seemed uncertain.

“When I was 3, I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia—a blood cancer of the bone marrow and the most common pediatric cancer. At Rady Children’s, the nurses were like family to us. They made what was such a difficult time for my family so much easier and brought so much joy and fun to our hospital stays.” - Lindsey Simano, grateful patient and current Rady Children’s oncology nurse.
