Last but certainly not least, I was sad to hear of the passing of John Maynard recently. Horse owners and riders who he helped over the years will agree that he was a superb horseman and show judge who was able to guide so many towards getting the best from their horses. I worked for John back in the 1980s when he was based in Wigginton, Oxfordshire and my abiding memory of him is as someone who was fair and kind to horses and people - in the show ring and out of it. I’ve no doubt his wicked sense of humour will be fondly remembered by those who knew him. Condolences go to his loved ones. Enjoy the issue and see you in December.

The Horse’s Neck

he neck is otherwise known as the cervical spine. Horses have 7 cervical vertebrae that make up the neck running from the poll to the chest. Through the cervical vertebrae runs the spinal cord, enabling nerve communication from the body and limbs to the brain. The cervical vertebrae actually run quite ventrally (low down) within the neck, with the majority of the neck muscles located above the cervical vertebrae and below the crest. The Cervical Vertebrae The 7 cervical vertebrae are not all the same. The ﬁrst is called the ‘atlas’ or C1, it sits right up at the poll. In rare cases you can get a dislocation of joint between C1 and C2, which can cause the horse to adopt an odd ‘star gazing’ posture. The second cervical vertebrae is called the ‘axis’ or C2. It is larger than the other cervical vertebrae. The third, fourth and ﬁfth cervical vertebrae are fairly similar, they are generally referred to as C3, C4 and C5. The sixth cervical vertebra is the same shape as the previous three vertebrae, but is slightly shorter, it is generally referred to as C6. The seventh and last cervical vertebrae is similar in shape to C6,

but again slightly shorter, it does not have transverse processes like the rest of the cervical vertebrae. It articulates with the ﬁrst thoracic vertebrae at the thoracic inlet at the level of the shoulder. The Cervical Articular Facet joints The cervical spine in horses is very ﬂexible, it can move side to side, and up and down. Most horses can reach all the way around to their tuber coxae (hip region) on both sides. The cervical spine protects the spinal cord whilst the

horse moves its head and neck around. The neck is stabilized on either side by the cervical facet joints, which sit on the left and right of each junction between vertebrae. The cervical articular process joints at the base of the neck are in constant use as the horse lifts its head up and down to graze. Arthritis in the cervical articular facet joints, particularly those at the base of the neck, is very common. It does not necessarily cause a problem in every horse, but can commonly be observed on radiographs. Horses who have pain at the base of their neck often have a reduced range of movement with their head and neck, and may prefer to eat with a stretched out forelimb stance. Some horses struggle with neck ﬂexibility under saddle and some develop proprioceptive deﬁcits where they are prone to tripping or stumbling. Wobblers Syndrome Wobblers syndrome is a developmental condition where the neck does not form properly in the growing animal. Its more accurate name is cervical vertebral malformation (CVM). In CVM the cervical vertebrae are narrowed, thus not allowing enough space for the spinal cord to pass through

uncompressed. You can also get dynamic CVM where the individual bones are correctly formed, but they are maligned in certain neck positions. The typical presentation of CVM is a horse which is inco-ordinated, or ‘wobbly’ hence the term wobblers syndrome. Most horses with CVM are prone to tripping, and will often stand in odd positions, leaving a limb stuck out. They generally struggle with turning in tight circles, so may struggle going through gateways or being loaded onto a box herringbone. In severe cases horses can just fall over in their stables or be unable to stand as foals. Cervical vertebral nerve entrapment In rare cases the nerves that supply the forelimbs can be pinched or trapped as they exit the base of the neck. This can cause a forelimb lameness, or occasionally sudden pain which often manifests as bolting. Nerve entrapment can be difficult to diagnose or treat, often a presumptive diagnosis can made if a horse has a forelimb lameness that does not ‘block out’ to the foot, distal limb or upper limb joints in combination with a history of bolting or neck pain. Horses can have a CT scan under general anesthetic to better view the nerve roots at the base

of the neck. In some scenarios horses can have the joints at the base of the neck medicated with a corticosteroid, or have surgery to remove bony spikes (osteophytes) that may be responsible for nerve entrapment. Muscular neck pain Horse can suffer whip lash type

injuries and muscle tears following falls. These can often be treated with anti-inﬂammatories and rest. Regular physiotherapy is useful for any athletic horse and can help with neck pain. In addition acupuncture, laser therapy, shockwave therapy and TECAR therapy could all be utilized in the incidence of muscular neck pain.

Understanding Overreach and other Self Inﬂicted Injuries in Horses

nfortunately for horse owners, there is one we can all agree on - horses have an uncanny ability to injure themselves in the most unexpected ways. Of a morning, they may be perfectly sound and scratch-free, but by the time you bring them in from a day out in their ‘safe’ ﬁeld, they have a swollen leg, a mysterious cut or a patch of missing skin. One of the most common selfinﬂicted injuries seen by equine vets are overreach wounds. This happens when a horse accidentally strikes itself with its own hind foot. While many of these injuries are minor, some can be surprisingly serious, making it important for owners to understand how they occur and when veterinary attention is needed.

What is an overreach injury? An overreach occurs when the hind foot catches the heel, pastern or fetlock region of the forelimb during movement, normally when the hind limb travels further forward than normal and makes contact before the front foot has completely left the ground. Overreach injuries can occur during in hand or ridden work or whilst horses are turned out.

Young horses are particularly adept at overreaching, especially when enthusiasm outweighs coordination. Often some horses will repeatedly overreach, these cases may require further investigation into conformation, movement and shoeing to try and identify the cause of the issue. Horses with long, powerful strides may be more predisposed, as can those working on deep, slippery or uneven ground. The resulting injury can range from a small skin abrasion to a signiﬁcant laceration involving deeper tissues. Why do they happen? Several factors can increase the risk of overreaching: • Fatigue during exercise • Poor footing or slippery surfaces • Fast work and jumping • Loss of balance or misjudged strides • Poor hoof balance • Loose or lost shoes • Individual conformation and gait characteristics

Horses: Experts at self-inﬂicted injury Overreach wounds are only one example of the numerous, and often inventive, ways horses accidentally injure themselves. Many horses sustain brushing injuries, where one leg strikes another during movement. These are commonly seen on the inside of the fetlocks and cannon bones and may occur when horses are tired or working on uneven ground. Others develop wounds through excessive rubbing. Horses suffering from sweet itch or other itchy conditions may scratch themselves against fences, trees or stable

walls, creating extensive areas of damaged skin. Then there are the injuries that seem almost impossible to explain. Horses may tread on their own feet while scrambling, clip themselves during exuberant bucking sessions, or somehow acquire cuts and swellings during a quiet afternoon turnout.

When a small wound isn’t a small problem One of the most important points for owners to remember is that the seriousness of a wound cannot always be judged by its size. As equine vets, we are often more concerned about where a wound is located rather than how large it appears. A tiny puncture wound close to a joint can be significantly more serious than a much larger cut elsewhere on the body. If your horse sustains a wound, it is always worth contacting your vet for advice Warning signs of more serious injury include: • Significant bleeding • Marked swelling • Obvious lameness • Heat or pain around the wound • A deep or gaping appearance • Persistent discharge • Wounds close to joints or tendon sheaths Treatment and Recovery The treatment required depends entirely on the nature of the injury. Minor wounds may only need cleaning, bandaging and a short period of rest. More significant injuries may require suturing, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, imaging or, in some cases, surgery Recovery can range from a matter of days for a superficial scrape to several months if important soft tissue structures or joints have been affected. Early intervention almost always improves the outcome. Prevention Not every self-inflicted injury can be avoided, but several measures can reduce the risk:

Maintain regular farriery appointments • Keep hooves correctly balanced • Use appropriate overreach boots during exercise • Introduce ﬁtness gradually • Check shoes regularly • Avoid unsuitable ground conditions where possible Overreach boots are particularly valuable for horses undertaking jumping, fast work or crosscountry activities, providing protection to the heel bulbs and coronary band.

Take Home Messages Most horses will acquire the occasional cut, bump or scrape during their lives, and many overreach injuries heal uneventfully. However, because the lower limb contains important structures packed closely beneath the skin, apparently minor wounds can occasionally have major consequences. While we may never completely prevent horses from ﬁnding creative ways to injure themselves, prompt recognition and appropriate treatment can make all the difference. When in doubt, seek veterinary advice early. It is always better to discover a wound is minor than to discover too late that it wasn’t. October/November 2026 9

What are Uroliths?

was recently presented with a 17-year-old Thoroughbred mare whose owner had noticed that she was a little quieter than usual and was frequently posturing to urinate, but was only able to pass small amounts of urine. Clinical examination revealed that the mare had an increased heart rate, respiratory rate and temperature. Rectal and ultrasound examinations showed that her bladder was markedly distended and contained a large urolith (urinary stone). Her uterus was also distended with ﬂuid. Examination of the vagina revealed a large urolith obstructing the urethra and preventing normal urine ﬂow from the bladder. The uterus was also found to be distended with pus, indicating a uterine infection. I drained the pus from the uterus while the mare was on the yard. I attempted to remove the urolith, but unfortunately this was unsuccessful, so the mare was admitted to Hook Norton Equine Vets for further treatment and removal of the stone. This was particularly important because a complete obstruction of the urethra can cause the bladder to become severely overdistended and, in extreme cases, rupture. Bladder rupture is a life-threatening complication requiring immediate veterinary intervention. Once admitted to the clinic, the urolith was successfully removed, as pictured. The mare remained in hospital for several days so that we could continue treating her bladder and uterine infections and monitor her recovery. Thankfully, she made a wonderful recovery and has since had no further associated problems. What are uroliths? Uroliths, commonly known as urinary stones or bladder stones, are relatively uncommon in horses compared with some other domestic species. They have been reported in

less than 1% of horses presented to veterinary hospitals. They can occur in horses of any age, although older horses appear to be more commonly affected. Male horses, including both geldings and stallions, are at greater risk of developing serious complications because their urethra is relatively long and narrow, making it more difficult for stones to pass. Although uroliths are uncommon, they are important to recognise because urinary obstruction can become a potentially life-threatening emergency. Why do horses develop uroliths? Horses naturally excrete relatively large quantities of calcium in their urine. Equine urine is also naturally alkaline and contains carbonate, creating an environment in which calcium carbonate crystals can form. In some horses, these crystals can aggregate and gradually form a stone. The development of uroliths is likely to be multifactorial. Factors that may contribute include the composition of the diet, mineral intake and balance, reduced water consumption and lowmoisture diets. However, the exact

reasons why some horses develop clinically signiﬁcant stones while others do not are not always clear. What signs should owners look out for? The clinical signs can vary depending on the size and location of the stone and the degree of obstruction. Small stones may pass unnoticed and cause few, if any, clinical signs. Larger stones or stones that obstruct the urethra can cause: • Frequent attempts to urinate • Straining or posturing to urinate • Passing only small amounts of urine • Urine dribbling • Blood in the urine, particularly during or towards the end of urination • Tail swishing or signs of discomfort when urinating • Restlessness or generalised discomfort • A horse appearing quieter than normal Some horses can also present with less obvious signs, such as reduced performance or behavioural changes under saddle. Importantly, urinary discomfort can sometimes be mistaken for colic or other causes of abdominal discomfort. What does normal urination look like? Knowing what is normal for your individual horse can help owners recognise a problem early. A horse should normally be able to urinate without repeated straining or obvious discomfort and should produce a normal stream rather than repeated small dribbles. Owners who notice a signiﬁcant change in their horse’s normal urination should take it seriously, particularly if the horse is repeatedly attempting to urinate without producing a normal amount. Why is prompt diagnosis and treatment important?

Uroliths can cause signiﬁcant discomfort, and prompt veterinary assessment is essential. If a stone obstructs the urethra, urine can build up within the bladder, causing it to become increasingly distended. Think of this a little like repeatedly over-inﬂating a water balloon: as the pressure increases, the bladder wall can become damaged. In severe cases, the bladder can rupture, allowing urine to leak into the abdominal cavity. This can result in serious, potentially life-threatening complications. For this reason, a horse that is repeatedly attempting to urinate but cannot produce a normal stream should be treated as an emergency. How are uroliths diagnosed? Your veterinarian may use several different techniques to establish the diagnosis. Clinical examination: Careful observation of the horse and its attempts to urinate can

overall health and identify evidence of inflammation or infection. They can also provide information about kidney function and, in some cases, the consequences of urinary obstruction. Ultrasonography: Ultrasound can allow the veterinarian to assess the bladder, including its degree of distension and the thickness and appearance of the bladder wall. Stones may also be visible on ultrasound. Cystoscopy: In selected cases, a camera can be passed through the urethra into the bladder. This allows direct visualisation of the urinary tract and can help confirm the presence, location and characteristics of a stone. How are uroliths treated? Treatment depends on the location and size of the stone, as well as the degree of obstruction and the horse’s overall condition. Some small stones may be able to pass naturally, but stones causing obstruction generally require veterinary intervention. Depending on the individual case, this may involve flushing or manipulating the stone, or surgical techniques to remove it. In cases where the bladder or urinary tract has become infected or damaged, additional treatment such as pain relief, antibiotics and supportive care may be required. Can uroliths be prevented? Unfortunately, there is no guaranteed way to prevent every urolith from developing. However, maintaining good hydration is an important part of supporting normal 12 October/November 2026

urinary function. Owners can encourage water consumption by ensuring that clean, fresh water is always available and by considering appropriate ways of increasing dietary moisture where suitable for the individual horse. Any changes to the diet or mineral supplementation should be discussed with your vet or an appropriately qualiﬁed equine nutritionist. Simply restricting calcium without professional advice is not recommended, as calcium is an essential nutrient and inappropriate dietary changes can create other problems. For horses that have previously developed a urolith, your vet may recommend additional monitoring and management depending on the

individual circumstances. What does this case highlight? This case is a useful reminder that, although uroliths are rare, urinary obstruction can progress rapidly and should always be taken seriously. Early recognition of subtle signs such as repeated attempts to urinate, producing only small amounts of urine, urine dribbling, tail swishing, straining or simply appearing quieter than usual -can make a signiﬁcant difference to the outcome. It is also a reminder that not every horse with urinary discomfort will present in an obvious way. Changes in behaviour or performance can sometimes be the ﬁrst indication that something is wrong. The most important message for owners If your horse is repeatedly trying to urinate but cannot produce a normal stream, contact your vet immediately. Do not wait to see if the problem resolves on its own. A urinary obstruction can cause severe bladder distension and, in the worst cases, bladder rupture and life-threatening complications. This mare’s story had a very happy ending, but it also demonstrates why recognising the signs and seeking veterinary attention promptly is so important

here is something wonderfully tangible about saddlery, a craft that has been shaped by centuries of working with horses. Yet while saddlery has deep roots in tradition, it is far from being a career stuck in the past. At Capel Manor College, students are discovering that heritage craft skills can provide a pathway into a surprisingly diverse modern career. Saddlery is a highly skilled craft. A professional saddler may make, ﬁt and repair saddles, while related careers include bridle making and harness making. 10 Tips for electric fencing repair and maintenance CHN’s editor talks to Rutland Electric Fencing for advice, and reviews some essentials to keep in your repair kit. 1. I don’t have mains electric, and the batteries don’t seem to last very long. How can I make sure my batteries don’t run down too quickly? If you do not have mains power, reduce anything that drains the battery unnecessarily. Keep vegetation away from live tape or cord, as it leaks energy to earth. Check cracked insulators, poor joins, tape touching posts or metalwork and damaged cable. Good earthing is essential, so place the earth stake deeply into moist soil where possible. A suitable solar panel can also help keep a 12V battery topped up. When next looking to replace your energiser, look for a solar energiser option. 2. One of my horses keeps bulldozing through the electric fence – what’s the best way to tell if all the tape/cord has enough current? Do not rely on the energiser clicking or ﬂashing. Use a fence tester at several points: close to the energiser, then at the beginning, middle and furthest point. Aim for at least 3,000V; for a horse that challenges 20 October/November 2026

the fence, 4,000–5,000V gives a stronger deterrent. A sudden voltage drop usually points to a fault, poor connection, vegetation or weak earthing. 3. How can I ensure my fence is effective in all weathers – heat and drought, wind, rain, snow, frost etc and do horses with thick coats/rugs

By process of elimination, the cause was identiﬁed and improved with better earthing and new energiser batteries.

still notice the electric current? Weather affects fence performance. In hot, dry conditions, the ground conducts less effectively, so extra earth stakes may help. In wind, keep tape reasonably taut so it does not flap against posts or vegetation. Rain may expose faults, while frozen ground can reduce earthing performance. Thick coats and rugs can reduce direct contact, so good voltage, visibility and fence positioning are especially important in winter. 4. What is causing my fence to ‘crackle/spark’ occasionally Crackling usually means the pulse is jumping a small gap or leaking where it should not. Common causes include loose joins, damaged or dirty insulators, vegetation, tape touching metalwork, broken conductor strands or poor gate connections. Regular sparking wastes energy and reduces fence performance, so find and repair the fault. 5. How may strands of tape should I use for the small plastic stakes? For most horses on small plastic stakes, two strands of electric tape are a good starting point. Put the top strand around chest height and the lower strand where it discourages pushing underneath. Ponies, foals or horses that test boundaries may need three strands. Two well-positioned, electrified strands are better than several loose or poorly connected ones. 6. How can I stop my plastic stakes bending inwards if there is a corner or kink in the fence line Lightweight plastic stakes are best for straight runs, not sharp corners. At a corner, tape tension pulls the post inwards. Use a stronger wooden, metal or heavy-duty plastic corner post with suitable insulators. Avoid over-tensioning the tape and, where possible, create a gentle curve rather than a tight 90-degree turn. 7. Can I knot electric tape/cord to join a break? A knot may hold tape or cord together, but it does not guarantee a good electrical connection between the conductive strands. This can cause voltage loss, sparking and weak performance. Use the correct tape, rope or cord connector, then test the voltage on both sides of the repair. Your conductor is mainly plastic with wire, so by tying a knot, you are tying plastic on plastic, the correct joiners, help join wire to wire making the conductivity

reduce the least. 8. The fence and earth clips on my energiser have broken off, what can I do? If a fence or earth clip breaks, switch the energiser off and disconnect the power. Replace it with the correct part for your model. If the terminal on the energiser itself is loose or broken, contact Rutland Electric Fencing rather than opening the unit yourself. 9. I’ve put new batteries in my energiser but it only blinks from time to time, not regularly – what should I check and are energisers repairable? If an energiser only ﬂashes occasionally after new batteries are ﬁtted, check the battery type, voltage and polarity, then inspect contacts and leads for corrosion, dirt or damage. Disconnect the fence and test the energiser on its own; if it pulses normally, a short or heavy fence load is likely. Repair options depend on the make and model, so speak to Rutland Electric Fencing. Rutland energisers have a warranty of at least three years and can be assessed for repair where appropriate. 10. When taking the fence down, I loop the tape into a loose coil for

storage, but it always twists and tangles up when I come to reassemble the fence. Any tips? Hand-coiling tape or cord often creates twists and tangles. A fence reel is a better option. Wind the conductor on under light, even tension and make sure it feeds onto the reel without twisting. When setting up again, let the reel unwind as you walk the line. This keeps it tidy, reduces damage and makes temporary fencing quicker to handle.

The relief of putting your fence line away knowing it’s in good order and there won’t be hours of untangling next time you need it - 10/10!

Tried and Tested

Thunderbrook Meadow Nuts I’m glad I tested these nuts last season because this year’s hot dry summer means I am likely to need to use them again this winter to bump up winter forage alongside my somewhat meagre hay crop. I always soak any nuts to avoid choking, and found these turned into a wholesome smelling mash pretty quickly in some tepid water.
