A Smart Study

The annual United Kingdom study fair saw an increase in vendor participation this year, once again proving that the longtime relationship between Brunei Darussalam and the United Kingdom is deep-rooted in mutual connection and progress. 12 more universities plus a slew of Overseas campuses were part of the growing U.K. contingent looking to attract Bruneian students to their establishments. Representing vendors shared the sentiment that

they hoped to help students find the ideal courses and education pathways for all circumstances, with some sharing that certain support ecosystems were not as well known in Southeast Asia as they were in other economic regions and it’s hoped that would change over time as more prospective students come to the annual Study U.K. Fair to see what’s available. This year’s event at The Empire Hotel and Country Club also saw the inclusion of fun new photo op spots like a replica London phone box, Platform 9 and ¾ from the Harry Potter series, as well as a delicious pop-up café from in-house café Zest.

grateful for the opportunity to feature in such a high profile show. “Regency-style costumes involve wearing a waspie that’s tightly cinched in your waist and wigs that weigh heavier as hours pass. Shooting went on for months and took me to the most incredible locations, including Osterley Park and Wilton House. Being on set was surreal,” shared Kristina adding that it was surreal and magical to have met all the cast in close proximity, and watching behind the scenes.

“I Feel incredibly proud and very blessed. It’s not every day that someone like me who grew up in a small, beautiful and traditionally humble country like Brunei, gets an opportunity to be part of a major series like Bridgerton that is watched and loved worldwide.” Most gracious, indeed!

On 13 January 2026, Singapore Airlines (SIA) Brunei celebrated its Platinum Jubilee with a red-carpet gala dinner at Royal Berkshire Hall, Jerudong Polo Tarindak. Over 250 guests — including Guest of Honour Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Abdul Manaf bin Metussin, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, key partners, PPS Club members, and corporate customers—gathered to celebrate seven decades of service.

A highlight of the evening was a congratulatory video featuring former General Managers—Mr. Ranjan Jha, Mr. Ang Beng Siong, Mr. Aldrin Arumugam, and Mr. Chua Kian Hwa—and former Station Manager, Mr. Syukri Othman. Singapore Airlines has come a long way since its first flight to Brunei in 1955. Initially operating weekly DC-3 services under Malayan Airways to Bandar Seri Begawan, the Airline grew steadily and operated a daily Fokker 27 (F27) service in 1972 when Singapore Airlines was established. Today, SIA operates daily flights between Brunei and Singapore with the Boeing 737-8. Supported by Thomas and his team, they continue to champion the SIA brand in Brunei.

A Feast with Gula Anau

Projek Dapur at Peak

Peak Club recently hosted Projek Dapur Ramadhan 2026 in collaboration with Hand4HandBN, a community initiative aimed at supporting

underprivileged families during the holy month of Ramadhan. Held over three days, the initiative united donors, volunteers, and members of the public to provide food and essential items for families in need. Peak Club’s Donation Drive collected household essentials, including dry goods, convenience foods, beverages and fresh produce, culminating in a ‘Pasaraya Percuma’ where the premises of the fitness facility was transformed into a supermarket-style space. Approximately 700 individuals from underprivileged families were invited to “shop” for groceries and essentials at no cost. Peak Club was honoured by the presence of His Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran

Dinner was a sweet affair at the ‘The Gula Anau Table’; a four-course dinner featuring the eponymous palm sugar made from the endangered Nipah palm, which grow in the depths of the crucial mangrove forest systems of Brunei Darussalam. With celebrated chef, kahar Fiarra, at the helm of the dinner menu, it was also co-hosted by Dil’s Café and Poni Group with the support of several consulate heads such as Timor-Leste, Australia and the United Kingdom in attendance. The dining experience showcased the innovative use of gula anau inspired by ‘the

Gula Anau story’ - the first National Geographic-funded documentary about the lost art of making the palm sugar. Guests were enthralled by the excellent dishes that included a grilled stuffed chicken wing with a Gula Anau glaze and Nipah Palm vinegar, and a delectable Gula Anau Yogurt paired with Calamansi Granita, Sago and Dried Osmanthus Flower. The dining experience was also supported by Poni Group, in line with Poni’s events tied to Ocean Week Brunei.

The exhibition featured lifesize reconstructions and replicas of important sites and artefacts in Madinah, including Rawdah AsSharifah and the noble home of the Prophet with Sayyidatina Aisyah (RA), presented as they would have appeared during the Prophet’s lifetime around 7H (628AD). It was a rare

opportunity to visualise the simplicity of early Islamic life and better understand the historical context of the Prophet’s daily environment. Guided tours further deepened the experience, emphasising the Seerah — the biography and teachings of the Prophet — and encouraging reflection on his values and character. A notable aspect of the exhibition was the engagement of local Bruneian craftsmen in the construction of the structures and life-size replicas, ensuring the installations were both historically faithful and carefully constructed. Their contributions highlight the capability of local talent in delivering complex exhibition builds that combine craftsmanship, research and storytelling.

Tiffin Jeiwa: Redesigning after Disaster

If you’re from Asia, it’s likely the sight of a stack of circular silver containers unlocks some deep trigger of nostalgia in you. Many will remember some form of this carrier holding delightfully warm homecooked food either for themselves or a loved one, although the origin of the word is said to historically refer to a light meal (breakfast or tea time) – derived from the English colloquialism ‘tiffing’ which refers to having a small drink – and became normalised to also refer to packed lunches which is more commonly known for now. Its impact and influence in Indian culture is so ingrained that there is even a film featuring the concept and tiffin carriers (Movie buffs need to add the critically acclaimed film “The Lunchbox” to their Must Watch list).

Today’s typical lunchboxes are far less sturdy and often made of some type of plastic, and with all the conflict surrounding microplastic and the recent bombshell that silicon is in fact not as heat-safe as it was marketed to be, stainless steel and other materials have come back into fashion for the working man and woman. Enter Tiffin Jeiwa – a Malaysian born brand that utilises the classic tiffin containers into a business empowering female victims of domestic violence and creating

a sustainable income channel for them.

JEIWA, or Johor Empowerment of Intellectual Women Association, was created in 2015 by founder Ina Fadilah Nizar, whose own experiences led her to creating a platform and community to support other victims of domestic violence.

The shape and style of the containers have been modernised slightly, and all the carriers in the brand have been hand painted with non-toxic water based paints in delightful designs, many of which are limited edition versions and only available through select distributors

or shops. These exclusive items are wonderful swaps for anyone who uses a lunchbox, and supporting a vulnerable community at the same time makes each purchase extra special. Now, you can get your very own right here in Brunei and contribute to the livelihood of women working hard to rebuild their lives. It’s a feel good purchase that truly does good work too!

Wildin’

Amidst the lush emerald landscape of the Bornean jungles, there’s true adventure waiting for you and the family to embark on. Rich in culture and traditional history, the depth of experience in Borneo also extends to the incredible gamut of flora and fauna that call this island home. Many of them can only be found here, making it the ultimate wild experience that will enchant the whole family – whether you want to see the cuddly and cute, or exotic and out in the wild animals.

BRUNEI

SMNF Deer Farm

This private family-owned park turned into a popular tourist spot, features an expansive open farm land and houses hundreds of deer, buffalo and other animals; you can feed the deer safely from behind the fenced area which makes this a great activity even if you’ve got smaller kids on holiday together. There is a minimal fee to enter, and deer food is chargeable so make sure to bring some extra cash along with you.

Little Kingdom

What do a racoon, meerkat and bearded dragon have in common? Hint: they all live at the Little Kingdom mini zoo in Jerudong Park! This is a great chance to get up close with some more exotic animals if you’re looking for some wildlife action in a less wild setting – you can even feed some of the animals like the giant tortoises and the miniature ponies. This one’s great for kids of all ages who like animals. Just be aware that the miniature pony does have a little sass and strong teeth when feeding!

Ulu Temburong National Park

This is a no-brainer; Ulu National Park in the Temburong district of Brunei, is well known as a pristine rainforest park reserve and the protected forest area means much of the local wildlife that lives in the area are quite easily spotted, especially when you’re at the top of the canopy tower walk which affords you a

million-dollar bird’s eye view all around. As the early morning sun and clouds rise, the distinct hoot of the long-armed gibbons as they make their way through the tree line will send a thrill through you. The canopy walk is open to all ages as long as they are safely looked after and fit enough to make the walk up the 60-metre high tower and bridge. You can book in with tour operators for guided tours and walks as it’s not advisable to venture out on your own.

SARAWAK

Happy Borneo Farm

Happy Borneo Farm is an award-winning agro-tourism spot that you and the family will definitely leave with smiles on! Set on a private acreage, this is a good option if you want a more structured interaction with animals for the kids. Animals here are mostly of the fluffy domestic kind although you can head to their Tropical rainforest Corridor/ Trail that houses more exotic animals like monitor lizards, slithery snakes and curious owls. A unique feature of Borneo Happy Farm is that they have a good collection of Asian turtle species including the Bornean River Turtle, which is an endemic and endangered species. If crocs are on the list of animals your kids are fascinated by, it’s worth taking a trip to the conveniently located Miri Crocodile Farm. Besides conservation efforts, there are lots of cool photo opportunities including getting to hold a real live baby crocodile!

Out

Bako National Park

Discover true history at Bako National Park, Sarawak’s oldest national park (it was instated in 1957!), where pristine rainforests house some of Borneo’s last remaining populations of endemic wildlife species. The biodiversity gem is also well-known for its towering rock formations and seaside cliffs. Best times for viewing animals is typically around early morning just before dawn and around the early evening time. 16 color-coded trails give you heaps of coverage to discover the lush rainforest area, and opportunities to photograph animals and birds in their habitat.

SABAH

Tawau Hills Park

This is one of the most underrated natural gems in Borneo – Tawau Hills Park is a lesser known park that is managed by Sabah Parks and features a whopping 27,972 hectares of protected primary rainforest (some of the last remaining in the world!) with towering giant Dipterocarp trees, which rank among the world’s tallest tropical trees. Its dense canopy and rich biodiversity thrive on fertile volcanic soil, a legacy of the ancient volcanoes that once shaped this landscape. This is an ideal choice if you’re looking to stay in the rainforest, and experience a wide array of activities and exciting trails leading to sulphur springs, cascading waterfalls, mountain peaks, and even one of the world’s tallest recorded tropical trees. Professional guided walks and multi-day expeditions are available for visitors eager to explore its remarkable biodiversity.

Sayap Substation

Exploring the island’s nature parks is best done with guides and when you’re got a conservation NGO handling areas like the magical Sayap Substation, you know you’re about to embark on a truly exciting journey. Tucked within the Kinabalu Park region of Kota Belud and nestled

inside the Kinabalu UNESCO Global Geopark, Sayap Substation is a hidden threshold between cultivated life and the untamed heart of Mount Kinabalu. Here, a crystal-clear river with an almost magically perfect wading pool you could lie in for hours and soak in the wild energy of Mount Kinabalu, awaits you. Peaceful campgrounds offer visitors an intimate, immersive encounter with nature in its purest form. But reaching this remote sanctuary is not for the faint-hearted. The road is rugged, demanding patience, endurance, and a spirit for adventure best tackled with a four-wheel drive and a thirst for the extraordinary.

KALIMANTAN

Keen to explore the new frontier of Borneo? Kalimantan’s natural landscape is wild, rugged and according to freelance guide, Hardiyanti, definitely requires some help spotting animals in the wild there. She recommends the May to June period if you’re interested to experience cultural festivals like Gawai and July through to August would be ideal weather before the start of the rainy season where rivers can swell up unexpectedly. Tanjung Puting National Park in the western end of Central Kalimantan, has some cool options of staying on a houseboat that takes you on a river journey through the heart of ‘Kahiyu’ habitat, as they’re known to the Dayak community. The Kapal Klotoks are well equipped and but there are no luxury options so be prepared for simple accommodations like comfy mattresses and mosquito nets with the natural night breeze serving as your air conditioner! We would recommend these journeys for bigger kids above toddler age, but it is a truly unique experience you’ll likely not find on the rest of Borneo island. From capacity-building programmes for blue economy careers and coral restoration to exhibitions and conferences featuring local and global experts, the programme showcases the growing momentum of ocean initiatives across Brunei’s

But Ocean Week is about more than protecting marine life. Did you know ocean-linked industries, including offshore oil & gas, already contribute to more than half of Brunei's GDP? At the same time, as Brunei explores opportunities beyond an oil-and-gas–dependent economy, this year’s “Ocean of Opportunities: Blue Economy for a Sustainable Future” theme highlights the expanding role of the blue economy in creating new opportunities for the nation.

A SYMBOL BENEATH THE WAVES

Each year, Ocean Week Brunei features an ocean icon reflecting the importance of healthy ecosystems. In 2026, that symbol is the dugong, a gentle seagrassgrazing marine mammal once more commonly seen in Bruneian waters.

Today, sightings are rare. It is possible we have already lost dugongs from our waters without realising it. Dugongs depend on healthy seagrass meadows that sustain fisheries, stabilise coastlines,

and store vast amounts of carbon. When these habitats decline, entire systems begin to unravel, highlighting the need to better understand, protect and restore these coastal environments.

CONSERVATION IN ACTION

Ocean Week Brunei 2026 will introduce three blue economy pilot initiatives led by Poni Group and their partners.

The first focuses on oyster remediation in Kampung Bolkiah, supported by a new oyster hatchery. By growing oysters on recycled shells and reef balls, water quality will improve and jobs will be created, laying the foundation for Brunei’s first blue carbon credit for late 2026.

Another initiative launches Brunei’s first structured mangrove restoration programme at Serasa and Mentiri. The project supports businesses in offsetting emissions while creating community jobs to grow, plant, and monitor mangroves using IoT sensors, satellite data, and AIdriven biodiversity analysis.

The third focuses on turtle conservation along Brunei’s coast through community education, nest monitoring, and hatchery and clinic management. Supporting this is Project BEACON, a tech-integrated ocean monitoring initiative led by ASTARI and Poni Foundation to strengthen long-term conservation efforts.

Together, these initiatives form the early stages of 10-year ocean programmes aimed at building Brunei’s resilient and sustainable ocean future while creating new opportunities for local communities.

CELEBRATING OCEAN CHAMPIONS

Another highlight of Ocean Week Brunei is the Ocean Awards, recognising individuals and youth making meaningful contributions to ocean conservation, creativity, and innovation.

These include the Ocean Hero Award, honouring individuals who have made a lasting impact on ocean stewardship; the Ocean Youth Grant, providing funding and mentorship for young innovators; and the Ocean Voices Video Competition, where youth share their passion for the ocean through action-inspiring short films.

BE PART OF THE OCEAN STORY

Ocean Week Brunei is ultimately about community participation. Events throughout it offer opportunities for students, families, businesses, and volunteers to engage with the ocean and learn more about the ecosystems surrounding Borneo.

Members of the public can attend events, join conservation activities, or scan the QR code above to take part in the Brunei Ocean Survey and join the Ocean Week Brunei WhatsApp Channel. The survey is YOUR opportunity to share what you would like to see for Brunei’s ocean future, while the WhatsApp Channel provides event updates and announcements!

FamilyFriendly Stays

Discover the best ways to see Asia as a family

Travelling takes work, and with kids, you are as good as a travel agent, tour guide, or an on-call butler. Phew. We’re here to help – with our curated list of family-friendly stays whether you’ve got a little family or lots of people who love to travel, you’ll be planning your next trip with ease and peace of mind! Explore the rich cultures of an interconnected ASEAN region through these great stay

options – thanks to Singapore Airlines network.

Starting in our own backyard, Brunei is a family-friendly haven with plenty to do especially for young families and it’s incredibly easy to cut down on screentime with lots of free and affordable options for the whole family to enjoy! Nature escapes can largely be enjoyed for free at many of the national parks or popular hiking trails, and if sunset picnics are your thing we highly recommend heading to the Eco-Corridor Park to partake in the golden hour by The Frame, where families often gather. Bubble and kite vendors help to make the atmosphere extra festive and you’re

grandmargherita.com

bound to make some friends! We love The Empire Brunei Country Club for some lush luxury, and families wanting a self-contained holiday focused on time together will appreciate the vast but secure grounds of the estate. Perfect for kid friendly explorations on foot or bicycle!

If you’re looking for an immersive cultural experience, staying at the magical Ecoponies Garden in the heart of Tutong district, is a must. You’ll definitely need to bring lots of repellent and be prepared for simple homestay or camping facilities but just one or two nights at the home of local Iban tribeswoman Eyon Ukoi, will make you want to come back as quickly as possible!

Flying into Sabah or Sarawak is easy and cheap, but why fly when driving gives you a perspective like no other? Road trips are a truly special way to experience the breadth of Borneo’s cultural diversity and if you don’t fancy driving then buses for hire are a real thing and surprisingly an affordable option for big groups of people. The regions townships are vibrant with their own communities and it’s often a more authentic way to experience life in Borneo. Sibu is a short drive from Brunei and a worthy stop on the way to Kuching, and gives you insight into the Chinese-populated communities and culture. If your end destination is Kuching, let the Grand Margherita Hotel or The Waterfront Hotel, be where you stay. These are great options for big groups of people, especially families. Large and well-designed rooms give both big and little kids lots of space to run around and relax in. Close proximity to major attractions like shopping malls

The Waterfront Hotel

or tourist landmarks, give you the peace of mind that going back if you need to, won’t take long.

Singapore’s latest accommodation and attraction juggernaut adds a wild aspect to family-fun. The upscale facilities and rooms at Mandai Rainforest Resort have thoughtfully been combined to create an immersive experience at the Singapore Zoo that’s bound to be unforgettable. Biophillic design permeates through the heartbeat of Mandai Rainforest Reserve, and rooms are spacious with luxury accents and thoughtful additions to make family holidays easier and more fun! The self-contained property is a great option for multi-generational travel especially if elder travelers require more accessibility features. As a Banyan Tree property, you know the experience is going to be worth every penny!

Although it’s geographically found in the Gulf of Thailand, Phu Quoc is a Vietnamese destination that comes up consistently when searching for family-friendly getaways in the ASEAN region. It’s an island -Vietnam’s largest – meaning this is the kind of place you could fly into and happily spend a week exploring with the family. We loved the kitsch of Sunset Town, a European-

styled development that features lots of wonderful architectural sights great for sweet photo opportunities, and nature lovers can splash around in the cold, clear azure waters of the island’s many beaches or take a walk through the Phu Quoc National Park. All budgets are accommodated for there ranging from rustic beach bungalows like the charming Naomi Resorts, to luxury all-inclusive resorts like the Spanishcolonial revival styled Vinpearl which is a local Vietnamese pick for family-friendly accommodation on Phu Quoc island! Moving northwards to the popular destinations of China, Taiwan, Korea and Japan, these are great picks for chillier weather and very different cultural experiences. China is vast –that’s an understatement – and you could honestly just travel the whole country with the family quite easily as far as holidays are concerned. Xi’an is a fantastic city for young history enthusiasts, or if you want to immerse the family in a city that is visually dramatic with lots of traditional cultural references. You can get direct flights easily to Xi’an, but it’s also easily accessible via high-speed rail or plane, from most other surrounding touristfriendly cities like Beijing or Shanghai. Some regional airlines like Singapore

Airlines also fly direct making it convenient to get to.

Taiwan is another destination that’s rich with Chinese culture and while large enough to warrant week long trips, the city of Taipei feels small enough to conquer with a small family in tow! The vibrant city is a great city if you’re not confident about language, and the public MRT system is incredibly wellconnected with lots of English directions to make travelling around more budgetfriendly. Take a daytrip to Jiufeng for the incredible food markets and Ghibli vibes. The island also has great nature attractions including the arresting Taroko Gorge, or soothing natural hotsprings in northern Beitou.

Let’s Get Material

Get a sensational sensory experience happening at the Melbourne Materials library – a thrilling look into the world of new materials like biofilm, mycelium packaging, 3D-printed eggshell ceramic tiles, or even hemp blocks and t-shirts made of coffee grounds! Material libraries exist across the world and for the first time, global sustainability and circular economy consultancy Hyloh has brought the concept to Australia in the form of a pop-up library in Sanders Place, creating a space where designers, architects and innovators can explore the possibilities of materials in a hands-on experiential way. It is hoped that a permanent home for the Melbourne Materials Library can be found in future.

Featuring a global roster of companies focused on showcasing their incredible blend

of creative experimentation and practical application, the Materials Library was set up in the historic precinct of Richmond, which is known for its design community. Sarah D’Sylva, co-founder of Hyloh, led the concept for the project and shared that “Materials are no longer just components, they’re commitments”. D’Slyva was formerly the Senior Design Strategist at Material ConneXion in New York and a collaborator at MateriO Paris.

She was also recognised as the winner of Planet Ark’s 2023 Emerging Circularity Leader Award, and presented Patriarchy vs the Planet on stage at The Outlook 2025.

D’Sylva also teaches professional practice to cross-disciplinary design students, at Monash University. Under her guidance, the library has welcomed students from RMIT, Monash, Melbourne, Victoria University, and Swinburne Universities, as well as corporate vistors from Hassell, Diadem, Arup, NGV, Tennis Australia, and the Commonwealth Bank.

The Melbourne Material Library is open for tours by appointment to anyone interested in exploring circularity and material intelligence.

Tinned and Trending

If you’ve been anywhere near social media in the last year or two, you’ll likely have seen a trending video featuring an unlikely hero –a can of tinned fish, the humble proponent of many a budget meal, and backbone of the canned food industry. (Pro tip: don’t burn the paper towel like you’ve seen all the videos unless you like eating microplastics and toxic bleach chemicals)

Preserving fish or seafood in tins, or glass jars, stretches all the way back to the 1700s as an affordable way to stretch seafood’s shelf life and maintain their flavour and freshness. Spain and Portugal

alone have a huge cultural connection and traditions revolving around the industry and concsumption of preserved seafood, and they make it truly delicious. So much so that when Becca Milstein was living in Spain around 2015, she began working on bringing back the same high-quality and ethically delicious tinned seafood concept back to the U.S.A. Besides actually being really yummy, Fishwives’ virality is also in part thanks to the incredibly vibrant aesthetic of the product, making them worthy of the almighty Instagram photo.

Sea People Surfing

Sometimes, an idea gets under your skin and stays there until the right time or people arrive to bring It into the sunlight. The story behind 501c nonprofit, OceanFolx , is a perfect example of what passion and partnership can achieve. Focused on women’s empowerment and leadership with a good dose of surfing and ocean conservation, OceanFolx is quietly building a platform that’s changed attitudes of the locals in Lombok, Indonesia. “Creating has

always been my passion. I've always known that I wanted to bring together all of my interests and start my own program,” founder Maddy Bolt has shared. “My love for surfing, sailing, and preserving the ocean inspired me to start (it). This program is designed to empower young women and provide a safe space for girls to develop their leadership skills. I finally saw my dream come to life during my recent trip to Lombok. The local community captured my heart, and I knew that I could make a difference by creating OceanFolx.” The program instructors equipped 13 local women with essential drowning prevention skills in 2024, which had a trickledown effect to 10 other families in Lombok and giving the children in those families the needed skills to confidently interact with the ocean. With two new local staff signed on, it’s clear that OceanFolx’s impact is integral to the community of Lombok. Want to get involved or join a program? Find them online @oceanfolx.

Sushi Savouring

Singapore adds another jewel in the country’s crown of world-class restaurants with the new opening of the popular Tokyobased sushi restaurant Sushidan, and they’re serving up affordable, high-quality Japanese sushi at incredibly affordable prices. How affordable? Omakase for under SGD20.00 sounds like its too good to be true, but that’s exactly what Sushidan will be offering! Sushidan was founded by Michelinstarred chef Hiroyuki Sato from Japan and specialises in Edomae-style sushi, a style of Japanese that uses preservation methods like curing or marinating to enhance the flavours of seafood. Sato has put Sushi master Chef Yusuke Kawana, who has nearly three decades of experience, at the helm of the new Singapore venture and with his

three decades of experience, it looks to be an absolute steal for premium Japanese cuisine. Seafood is flown directly in from the famed Toyuso Market in Japan, while fresh Salmon is imported from Norway. There are also specialty ingredients such as red vinegar from Kyoto and Red Shari rice from the Akita prefecture used in the menu, which makes Sushidan’s current prices all the more incredible. It’s going on our restaurant rotation list regularly for sure!

Keep it Kiwamiya

Who would think that in the basement floor of a Japanese shopping center, you’d find one of the best meals in Tokyo? We strongly suggest you head to the inconspicuously situated Kiwamiya steak house; in the basement floor of the trendy Shibuya PARCO shopping mall, Kiwamiya may seem like an unobvious choice amongst the plethora of restaurants in the building. But if you like high-quality black Wagyu beef and the added bonus of the meat being Halal certified, then Kiwamiya is one to keep on your list. They also have multiple branches across Japan, and a Halal menu featuring the soupy delight, Motsunabe, and light bites.

Bangkok Biennale

When we think of fine art in Asia, Bangkok does not necessarily pop into one’s mind. What is astounding about the Bangkok Art Biennale (BAB) is not that it exists but that the past four editions of the art show (spanning back to its inaugural conception in 2017) have garnered almost five million visitors to the free art platform, and over 300 international artists joining. The city transforms into a giant collective art gallery as selected venues like temples and galleries host shows and performance artists over the four-month duration of the biennale. This year’s theme, ‘Angels & Mara’, “explores

opposites and the space between them, responding to today’s politically fractured world” according to the renowned ‘ArtReview’, and looks to be an exciting edition with the artistic direction led by Apinan Poshyananda, chief executive and artistic director of BAB, alongside curators Adulaya Hoontrakul, Rémy Jarry, Melanie Pocock and Kulapat Yantrasast. With the event set to take launch this October, there’s plenty of time to book your tickets and get organised – this is certainly a side of Bangkok you’ll not want to miss!

Argo Studios Jewelry

Somewhere in Amsterdam, there is a lady called Margo who creates beautiful things. This simple description certainly belies the complex and intricate nature of her jewellery, but her direct and no-nonsense attitude is what spurs her to create. It’s annoyingly admirable, to be frank, at how she has at once embodied the essence of what art is really about while simultaneously making items that are highly coveted

and sellable. “I don’t stick to one way of doing things – if an idea demands a new technique, I’ll learn it. I am both creative and very technical. The challenge of figuring things out keeps my work exciting“ she says on her website. And exciting is certainly the right word! The artisanal quality behind her work shows, as does the fact that she is an incredibly technical metalsmith. Many pieces have a surprise in perspective, much like an M.C. Escher piece there are elements like different faces depending on how you wear them, or single pieces held together by two independently exquisite sections, the chrysanthemum Bud and Petals for example, or the owl hidden in plain sight as Athena’s helmet.

Beyond the Dive: Building Brunei’s Blue Economy

You both have an interesting mix of business backgrounds in different spheres. Could you both share how those strengths helped in catalysing Poni into the formidable business group it has become today.

AA: My background is in hospitality and business development, having spent over a decade in the UK working on projects like 45 Park Lane and Coworth Park under Brunei Investment Agency. That experience exposed me to building projects from concept to execution at a high standard. In Poni, it gave me the experience to bring in structure, systems, and commercial thinking. As we grew, especially into larger and more complex projects, putting the right foundations in place became critical, and that’s where I’ve focused, helping scale the business beyond just operations into something more strategic.

TW: Anna came in at a pivotal stage when we were moving from a small diving business into working with larger clients and more complex projects. Her experience helped us strengthen our structure, positioning,

WONG

The Poni Group has become synonymous with conversations about ocean conservation and sustainable maritime business. What started out as a small diving business for avid diver and entrepreneur, Mohd Tahsin Wong Abdullah (Thye), has become one of Brunei’s most flourishing business. Together with Anna Aziz, Chief Business Officer and Thye’s wife, they have had a whirlwind few years of recognition and awards across the region and internationally; some highlights include Thye being one of the few Bruneians selected for the prestigious Leader’s Program (Asia-Pacific) under the Obama Foundation; Anna was one of five Bruneians selected to attend the official luncheon and sit with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, during the Royal Meet-andGreet in conjunction with His Majesty’s 79th Birthday last year; the Poni Group has snagged three Proudly Brunei Business Awards categories over the last two years. And that’s just looking at the last two years. We sit down with the dynamic couple to talk business, becoming parents and the ‘Blue Economy’

...Brunei’s ocean as a key growth driver for Brunei’s future, and to really show that everyone can take action that matters and that we all have a responsibility for our future.

on diving and tourism. Covid was a major shift for us, with no tourists and a slowdown in B2C activities, it forced us to rethink the direction of the company. That’s when we started pivoting more intentionally towards sustainabilityrelated services and building ASTARI. Then my focus became putting in the right systems and structure to support it, making sure projects are not just ideas, but practical and measurable. As we grew, it became about building the right system and the right team that can scale with us.

and ability to scale. My interest in business started really young watching my parents run a cold storage business for the last 40 years, then I started working in graphic design & web development during high school and later photography. That, together with my passion for diving led to me founding a dive club at my university in Canada, becoming a dive instructor and being involved with NGO work there. really built a strong set of skills to help Poni grow as a small business into the ocean platform it is today.

It’s been exciting to follow how your work has evolved. How did it go from just diving to your work around the larger blue economy, conservation and the maritime industry?

AA: When I joined, the business was growing, but it was still really focused

TW: Diving every week, I could see what was happening in the ocean, and there’s less coral and less fish. So it was really clear that we needed to do more than just operate as a diving center and start to take action. Diving alot, people called us to help them for underwater construction work, as that scaled up, I went to the UK & Australia for commercial diving training and expanded, first boat charters, then aquaculture, oil & gas, and environmental consultancy work. Then this became the fastest way we can scale up our impact work, by driving revenue from our commercial services to our conservation and community work around the ocean as a self-sustainable system.

With your current work in this space, what role do you see the ocean playing in Brunei’s future economy and what impact do you hope your work will have over the next decade?

AA: In Brunei, our ocean is about seven times larger than our land, so it’s a huge part of who we are, even if we don’t always see it that way. For me, the

focus is really on people, how we bring people, communities, youth, and all the different stakeholders into this space in a meaningful way. Things like training, collaborations, or just helping people feel more connected to the ocean. A lot of what we do now involves working closely with partners across government, NGOs, and even international organisations, because this kind of work can’t be done alone. It’s really about aligning everyone and making sure what we’re building is something people can be part of and benefit from. I like to think our work will see a strong ocean community across all groups and backgrounds taking ocean action together.

TW: Alot of people actually don't know, but the ocean is actually already contributing to over half of Brunei’s economy. The possibilities for our economy are endless. I see the ocean as a foundation for new industries, new jobs, and long-term growth in Brunei’s post-oil & gas economy. What I’m focused on now is showcasing financially sustainable blue economy pilot projects like mangrove planting by helping companies measure their carbon emission and getting revenue to plant mangroves to offset their impact, or oysters for remediation work in Kg Bolkiah and to sell Brunei’s first blue carbon credits to generate revenue continuously for the program and community. The goal is to show that the ocean creates jobs, supports communities and that profit and purpose can work together for a system that can scale beyond Brunei across ASEAN and to firmly establish Brunei’s ocean as a key growth driver for Brunei’s future, and to really show that everyone can take action that matters and that we all have a responsibility for our future.

We’re putting our bets down now – Zheng Xi Yong is going to be a Hollywood star. The Miri native recently went viral in Asia for his supporting role as Lord Barnaby in the popular Netflix series, Bridgerton. The emerging actor is steadily gaining recognition for his dedication to the craft and his growing presence in the entertainment industry. The law school graduate turned actor, took lessons to hone his skills, putting in the work and time to chase his dreams. Besides the fact that he is the second Borneo native to make it onto the show, which in itself is no small feat, Yong exudes much of same charisma he presents on-screen. Zheng Xi’s acting history shows a professional actor with the ability and willingness to portray a range of characters grounded in emotion and depth. We sat down with the burgeoning star to chat about his journey into acting, the ultimate Sarawakian comfort food and how the duality of a life lived in two places shaped him (and two very impressive accents!).

Could you give us a little bit of background – who Zheng Yong Xi?

ZXY: Yeah, so I was born in Miri and when I was four years old my family moved to the UK and then moved back to Miri when I was eight and then I was in KL from 15 to about 19, I think. Okay. So then I came to the UK for my undergraduate, which I did in law originally, so I went to King's College London. I did a law degree, but I have been growing, I have been performing since young, kind of like mainly singing more than anything. When I was in London studying law I met my singing teacher who recommended that I consider going into musical theatre, with the voice I have. I studied more theatre since I was already in London, on his suggestion, and I remember feeling very inspired watching people on stage. Seeing that you could act, sing and dance, and do all these things at the same time. Drama school was the next step because in the United Kingdom, that’s kind of the common pathway into the industry. Most British actors go to drama school. He teaches on the musical theatre master's programme at the Royal Academy of Music as well and suggested I audition to enrol, which I did (as well as a few others!) and went on to do the Master’s programme after

You watch a good piece of theatre or film, TVthose performances have a big emotional impact on a lot of people.

finishing my undergraduate law degree. One of the big things about drama school in the U.K. is that the best drama schools or programmes attract the best agents and agents who come to the end-ofcourse industry showcase to scout talent.

So from then, I had a few meetings and I signed with my first acting agent, started auditioning. And then my first job was in a musical called Miss Saigon. I did that for a year. But even while I was training, and even when I signed with my agent, I made it clear like, I also want to do film and TV. And the reason why I want to train in musical theatre is because I get to train in acting, singing and dance. I want to do all of it.

You mentioned that you moved to the UK at a young age and then spent most of your formative years in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Do you credit your time in either country to your interest in the arts?

ZXY: My parents don’t work in the field but they always had a massive love for the arts be it music, or theatre and even as a four-year old in the U.K. they would bring me to shows. I moved back to Malaysia when I was eight where there were things like singing or talent competitions within the primary school as well. And I just remembered wanting to do it because I’d watched some Disney films or something (laughs). I remember watching Mulan and being like ‘Okay, I love this.’

Okay. Which character in Mulan had that ‘main character energy’ for you?

ZXY: Maybe Mulan. And funnily, the singing voice of Mulan was Lea Saloma who was the original Kim in the Miss Saigon stage production, that

subsequently became my first professional acting job, which is kind of interesting. But school is where it all started. I think my parents recognised the potential and my love for singing lessons. The secondary school I attended in Kuala Lumpur was also a big support in nurturing the performing arts so I had a lot of opportunities to perform and take part in school productions. In the back of my head, I always kind of knew I wanted to perform later in life but I didn't know as what exactly. At one point I wanted to be a singer-songwriter and I’m still looking to explore this on the side. It was only later on that I became fascinated with acting and the way that it affects people emotionally.

Were you surprised at where you kind of ended up in musical theatre? What's behind the attraction to that genre?

ZXY: Yeah, it wasn't something that I knew I wanted to do early on. It was more when I was in Law school – I was also in an acapella group at the time. Musical theatre kind of came into my mind second year of law school but the more I discovered about it, I kind of loved it. With musical theatre, the song is obviously a big thing. And I always loved singing. But I think the acting side of things, it's just… You watch a good piece of theatre or film, TV - those performances have a big emotional impact on a lot of people.

Can you share one or two examples that impacted you and have stuck with you to drive you to continue to be an artist?

ZXY: There was this film called Still Alice, starring Julianne Moore. And I remember it being so heartbreaking. Yeah. Performances like that are just amazing and I really want to be able to do that. But I think the art form of acting itself, I find it very elusive. You're always trying to ‘get it right’. But you just don't know what it is. You can do 50 shows and you get to show number 51 still being like ‘Oh, that's how you deliver the line’, or you discover something new about the role. I guess with playing characters you're always trying to understand their point of view, and trying to create this persona through understanding them and I just find that so fascinating.

It’s not easy to please everyone, especially when you run a restaurant but we dare say Yin Yang has got it in the bag (and name!). The love letter to her mother’s cooking and own heritage, Yin Yang Café is a true foodie’s endeavor and fusion in its most direct sense; marrying Asian and Western flavours with trending techniques and ideas, the menu changes seasonally as inspiration from travelling and global developments in the food scene take hold. This affirmation of duality, balance, innovation and comfort eats resulted in some of the more unusual and delicious meals you’ll find in Brunei.

Their beloved Nasi Lemak Classic gets a fusion makeover into a Japanese sushi roll – risky, if done in the wrong hands, but at Yin Yang it’s become another signature menu item for good reason. It’s your favourite Malay comfort food in a highly snackable format. Fragrant pure pandan extract in the rice, umami-packed seaweed, fried chicken, Singapore-style homemade Otah-Otah with real fish-only paste, and crisp cucumber, rolled up and sitting atop a delicious mild sambal. Yours truly is especially particular about Nasi Lemak, so let me tell you this was not on my bingo card for 2026 to find a version I actually rated anything close to a 10.

Speaking of 10’s, the menu at Yin Yang has been curated and developed carefully and there truly will be something here for everyone in the family – picky eaters or Western Food lovers can indulge in fan favourites like the Salmon Tobiko Pasta which is creamy and a little salty, with a mysterious edge of smoky flavour that sends this dish into another level. Their signature Mixed Platter plays like any good Greatest Hits CD, and we are so amazed by the generous portions of their popular snacks like the Butterflied Garlic Prawns, juicy Fish Fingers made for dipping in their homemade Ranch sauce, a very essential order of Mussels Overload, and sticky Honey Sesame Wings which are full of the floral honey and sweet-spicy flavours we love in Korean Fried Chicken. Crunch-a-licious!

One of the standout orders in the menu is the Curry Laksa and before anyone starts a war, we dare you to try it and not be at the very least, impressed. This has extra lemak or fattiness from coconut cream and a really good flavourful broth at its heart. Modeled on the Singapore Laksa the owner grew up eating, with a few twists, it’s slurpable, soothing and really hits the spot when you need a belly-warming meal packed with loads of condiments. Paired with a savoury sambal and a wedge of Kasturi lime, it’s a dish worth returning for again – and many loyal customers do!

There are no afterthoughts here. The drinks menu is equally well-crafted and we love the mix of caffeine and non-caffeine options like the Yin Yang Latte which is a double caffeinated combo of black tea and coffee; a zesty Dragonfruit Mojito; refreshing Aurora Blue has a delightful pistachio syrup base. Tea lovers must try the Matcha and Earl Grey Latte Sea Salt combo, while the Golden Osmanthus gets our seal of approval as a light and addictive palate cleanser. A growing range of in-house bakes and desserts like fudgy brownies, a signature Tiramisu, and Burnt Cheesecakes, make this an ideal every-meal choice.

TASANNE FAST FOOD (SERIA KWAY TEOW)

Tasanne Fast Food is one of those places that has culturally shaped the community. The restaurant’s original location in the Gadong Central area has been in operation for decades yet it’s better known as Seria Kway Teow –the key dish served here and pretty much the only dish on the menu (that gets ordered anyway). Despite the name suggesting typical fast food, the piece de resistance here is a simple, humble plate of wok-fired noodles doused in an ample dressing of savoury sauce that is predominantly made up of sweet and salty soya sauces. So called because the family run restaurant and recipe originated from an immigrant family in the Seria township, before the Bandar branch opened up. Your most difficult decisions here will be what size, and what meat to order with your noodles. A runny fried is optional but recommended for the ultimate bite. As good as their kway teow is, it’s almost secondary to their freely available sambal sauce. And this, this is the secret recipe that’s been guarded so tightly that makes or breaks the dish. It packs a heat that builds as you eat, packed with umami and spice yet you can never quite put your finger on what it is that makes this chili sauce so good. One of the reasons Tasanne has built a loyal following is its consistency—the food is rarely ever below par, even during busy hours. Portions are generous and the prices remain reasonable, making it a practical choice for everyday dining. Simple and casual this is perfect for a quick breakfast, lunch or dinner at their Sunway branch.

THE VAULT

The Vault has joined the group chat – vying for the accolade of best burger in Brunei, this eatery brings the ultimate American fast food to customers with a slight twist. The restaurant concept was created by Smash Uncle – a well-known fixture in Brunei’s burger scene- and styled like a modern diner, with a casual, fun atmosphere. The Vaut’s current menu is small, keeping the focus on their freshly made food. McDonald’s, this is not. It’s a fresh and locally sourced beef patty made from scratch, smashed on the grill for those crispy edges and an almost instantaneous cook. The bun is soft and almost melts in your mouth, in fact the whole concoction takes very little to get through but you will be very full afterwards. Their Corned Beef Classic is an unusual addition that banks on the saltiness of tender corned beef to elevate an already good smash patty burger. The Vault’s also gained fame for their chicken tenders and cuts – huge chunks of tender chicken pieces that are almost addictive when eaten with their housemade white sauce. It’s American-style fast food done with heart and soul, and worth every bite!

COFFEE BY AEZU

Nothing hits better than a nice cold (or hot!) brew made by none other than the heavenly Coffee by Aezu. Established in 2023 while hailing in Kuala Belait is their quaint coffee shop buzzing with all sorts of blends with fair prices waiting to be tried. Their famed lattes are to die for; whether the Spanish kind, the Matcha kind, or especially thrilling, the Seasonal kind that you’d need to keep a lookout for. Not a coffee fan, though? They have plenty of other blends too! Known for dropping new flavors and mixes, their Creme series is an ongoing non-coffee sequence of sweet, buttery sipping goodness, all crafted with a rather unique flavor line-up like a certain Creme Cendol favored by many. One taste of the velvety pandan blended well with the sharp espresso on your tongue and you’ll be downing the rest in one go. On top of all that, they’ve got bakes that both look and taste absolutely divine, especially their beautiful croissant options that come in more flavors than one can count. The Aezu team seem to have a knack for coming up with daily drops of flavors or the rare seasonal ones any chance they get, so once again, best to keep an eye out when they do!

HOWDY GRILLHOUSE

Looking for a lively Western-style dining experience that feels like a calmer version of TGI FRIDAYS? Howdy’s upbeat atmosphere makes it popular but reviews point out that it’s still the kind of place where you can gather with friends, relax, and enjoy a hearty meal over good conversation. Date night potential, we say! The menu focuses on classic comfort food, with burgers, grilled meats, and generous side portions leading the lineup. Their grilled beef steaks and saucy pork ribs are particularly popular and reviews highlight that the food is consistently tasty and fresh. Expect bold flavors and satisfying portions – the Taliwang and Barbeque glazes are particularly recommended! Their pasta menu is reliably good and you can’t go wrong with their classic Bolognese Spaghetti, especially at their portion sizes. Service is typically quick and friendly, helping keep the atmosphere welcoming and relaxed. If you’re craving filling Western comfort food in Kota Kinabalu, Howdy Restaurant is definitely worth a visit.

CRUMB ARTISAN BAKERY & CAFE

Crumb Artisan Bakery in Miri is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates good bread and pastries. The moment you step inside, the comforting smell of freshly baked loaves fills the air. Focusing on a base of traditionally produced bakes with Asian-Western fusion at the heart, the quality shows in every bite. Their sourdough bread is a standout, featuring a crisp crust and soft, airy interior that works beautifully for sandwiches or simply with butter. The pastry selection is equally impressive, with flaky croissants, buttery danishes, and sweet treats that look as good as they taste; whether it’s a traditional Aussie-style meat pie, something more inventive like a smoked duck pastry, homemade pasta or pizza, the local team behind this bakery are really, really good at what they do. The food is innovative enough to make you think a little about what you’re eating, while still remaining casual enough to be perfect for any time hunger strikes. The interior is clean, modern, and inviting, making it a pleasant spot for a relaxed breakfast or afternoon coffee – another thing they do well at Crumb! Whether you’re grabbing a loaf to take home or enjoying a pastry and latte on-site, Crumb Artisan Bakery & Cafe delivers a simple yet satisfying experience.

BRUNEI

BANK S

Banks in Brunei Darussalam are usually open Mondays to Fridays, 9am - 4pm and on Saturdays, 9am11am. Some banks have branches with later closing times. Islamic banks follow the same operation hours except on Fridays when they are closed for prayers between 11am - 2.30pm. Cash withdrawals and deposits can be made from Automated Teller Machines (ATM) that can be found in various shopping complexes and bank branches all over the country. ATM cards affiliated with the international Plus or Cirrus systems are accepted at most ATMs.

CREDIT CARDS

VISA and Mastercard are the most widely accepted credit cards in hotels, restaurants and major shopping complexes. Some establishments accept American Express.

Money Changer

Licensed money changers can be found at the airport, hotels, various shopping complexes and banks. To cash or exchange travelers cheques, visit major international banks in the capital.

FRIDAY PR AYER TIME

All retail, food and beverage outlets and business offices are closed between 12 noon and 2pm on Fridays to observe the Friday prayer time for Muslims.

Islamic Etiquette

Although Islam is the state religion of Brunei Darussalam, it is also a country that prides itself on the diversity of its people – including their religions. Visitors are welcome to mosques, provided some etiquette is followed. In general, proper attire is required; women are required to cover their head, shoulders, and knees. Some mosques will provide simple robes and shawls to meet these standards. Shoes are to be removed before entering a mosque. Please do not pass in front of people in prayer, and do not touch the Al-Quran. Please ask for permission before taking photographs – particularly inside! Travel the World Through Film

Society of the Snow (2023)

Starring

The Ramen Girl (2008)

Art and travel have always gone together like peanut butter and jelly - inexplicably complementary and made for each other. Films about travel are a dime a dozen, and there's probably one film within the theme of travel that has inspired serious wanderlust in yourself. Whether it’s getting lost in the beauty of an exotic destination, examining the beauty and heartache of going somewhere, or simply what looking closer to home, travel in films has produced some of our generation’s greatest films. We hope you enjoy exploring some of our must-watch picks for films that tie in travel to their storylines.

Enzo Vogrincic, Matías Recalt, Agustín Pardella

Directed by J. A. Bayona

This film transforms the very idea of travel into an extreme test of human endurance. The Spanish-language survival drama recounts the real-life 1972 Andes plane disaster in which Uruguayan rugby players and other passengers were stranded in a remote mountain area after their flight to Chile crashed into a glacier. On the surface, Society of the Snow’s ‘journey’ isn’t one of sightseeing or adventure; it’s a brutal odyssey of survival where movement is dictated by desperation rather than desire. Travelling through hostile snowfields and fractured terrain with limited resources, the survivors’ trek becomes a reflection on resilience, fellowship, and the indomitable will to return home. Landscape plays a huge role in the film, as setting and antagonist, shaping every choice and turning geography into heavy moral dilemma.

Starring

Brittany Murphy, Toshiyuki Nishida, Tammy Blanchard

Directed by Robert Allen Ackerman

Okay, we went left-field here with this choice but any movie with the now deceased Brittany Murphy, Is a welcome return to the incredible nostalgia of the 90s Hollywood era.

The film at best probably makes the cut as a B-grade movie however, if you can look past all the things that are slightly terrible about this film, there emerges a wonderfully relatable storyline. Murphy stars as Abby, a spoiled American who is abandoned in Tokyo by her boyfriend. She finds respite in a neighbourhood ramen shop (something any visitor to Japan has experienced surely!) and soon throws herself into mastering the soul-reviving broth and noodle dish.

The premise of the film certainly paints the wistful wondering of many a Japan traveler, in close detail, and we’ll not be surprised if anyone watching this film suddenly needs to head out for a bowl of ramen after!

Eyimofe

(This Is My Desire) (2020)

Starring Jude Akuwudike, Kate Normington, Temi Adelana

Directed by Arie Esiri and Chuko Esiri

Built on themes of emigration and aspiration, Eyimofe tells two parallel stories: Mofe and Rosa, two Lagos natives, each pursuing the dream of leaving Nigeria for better opportunities abroad. Mofe’s journey to obtain a passport and visa becomes a bureaucratic odyssey while Rosa’s pursuit of a Spanish fiancé is equally complicated. The city’s worn-down embassies, chaotic streets, and labyrinth of systems, turn travel into a metaphor for the challenges of mobility in a globalized world. Directed with raw authenticity, Eyimofe explores what movement means when it is tethered to aspiration and inequality. Every step toward departure reveals social barriers, economic friction, and emotional cost. Rather than celebrate escape, the film examines the emotional terrain of wanting to leave and the sacrifices and uncertainties that desire demands.

Atlantique (2019)

Starring Mama Sane, Amadou Mbow, Ibrahima Traore

Directed by Mati Diop

Atlantique is a hauntingly lyrical film that reconceives travel as perilous migration and spiritual reckoning. Centered in Dakar, the story follows young workers who, fed up with unpaid wages, set out across the Atlantic in search of better futures and never return. Director Mati Diop intertwines love, loss, and the sea to depict travel that dances between hope and tragedy. For Ada and Souleiman, the journey is both literal crossing the ocean and symbolic, representing the pursuit of dignity and possibility beyond the confines of social and economic constraint. Diop’s fluid visuals and sound design use the ocean’s rhythm to evoke longing and uncertainty, emphasizing that travel across borders is often an act marked by risk and precariousness.

The Wandering Earth / 流浪地球 (2019)

Starring Wu Jing, Qu Chuxiao, Li Guangjie

Directed by Frant Gwo

China’s blockbuster science-fiction epic, The Wandering Earth, reimagines travel on a cosmic scale. When the sun threatens to expand, global governments unite in a monumental effort to move Earth itself out of the solar system, transforming planetary drift into the ultimate journey. The travel here is not just literal but about personal escape and collective survival: massive engines propel Earth through space toward a new neighbourhood. Amid this gargantuan journey, protaganists must navigate alien terrain, orbital threats, and interpersonal conflicts, all while carrying the weight of humanity’s future on their shoulders. Gwo employs spectacle to ask what travel means, when the destination is existential. The Wandering Earth* suggests that travel at its most extreme can redefine our place in the universe but also forces us to reckon with how far we’re willing to go physically and morally, to secure a future.

Capernaum (2018)

Starring

Zain Al Rafeea, Yordanos Shiferaw, Boluwatife Treasure B ankole

Directed by Nadine Labaki

Lebanese director Nadine Labaki’s film follows the harrowing journey through socioeconomic spaces that often feel like barriers rather than paths, as told through the perspective of Zain, a 12 year-old boy who sues his parents for bringing him into a world of hardship, triggering a road story across Beirut’s margins as he flees from danger and poverty. As Zain moves between neighborhoods, refugee camps, and illegal work sites, travel becomes a gauge of inequality rather than adventure. Every street crossed and checkpoint navigated reveals layers of bureaucracy, social neglect, and invisible borders within the city itself. Unlike conventional travel tales that celebrate discovery, Capernaum confronts the invisibility of displaced populations where so often, roads don’t lead to wonder; they present new obstacles. The film’s raw, documentarylike aesthetic lends visibility to a process and inequitable lifestyle that many communities around the world go through, made even more striking combined with Zain Al Rafeea’s own history as a refugee.
