About Chi Omega
On December 19, 1925, Anna Easter Brown, with the assistance of Jessie B. Thornton, organized Chi Omega Chapter after being deputized by International President, L. Pearl Mitchell. The charter members were: Anna Easter Brown, Jessie Thornton, Thelma Black, Valley K. Redding, and Zobia Coleman. The first officers were: Anna Easter Brown, President, Jessie B. Thornton, Vice-President, Valley K. Redding, Secretary, and Mabel Robinson, Treasurer.
Throughout its history, Chi Omega Chapter has been one of the premier organizations for community service, recognizing high scholastic achievement, social service participation and service to all mankind.
Chi Omega Chapter has hosted several conferences, members have received numerous awards and recognitions, and our signature programs have been recognized throughout Alpha Kappa Sorority, Incorporated®.
A thirty year partnership with the City of Rocky Mount has yielded opportunities to provide community services and signature programs serving the residents of Rocky Mount and the surrounding areas.
Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009, a thirty-one year dream came true for Chi Omega Chapter. Tau Gamma, an undergraduate chapter, was chartered on the campus of North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
In 2011, Ruth Anderson Smith was instrumental in meeting with the North Carolina Humanities Council to present evidence that Anna Easter Brown was worthy of a North Carolina Historical Highway Marker being erected in her honor. The marker is located at the entrance of Unity Cemetery, the gravesite of Anna Easter Brown. Recognizing the accomplishments of Anna Easter Brown to the City of Rocky Mount and the state of North Carolina, the City Council approved the erection of a City Marker near the home where Anna Easter Brown lived for approximately thirty-two years.
In 2015, Chi Omega Chapter reached a milestone celebration of ninety years of service. Past presidents, fifty and twenty-five year members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® were recognized. Dear Sorors of Chi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®:
My warmest and heartfelt congratulations on your Centennial Anniversary. This is a milestone that only a few chapters have had the honor of achieving.
Chi Omega Chapter has been a beacon of service since its chartering in Brick, North Carolina to its present location in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. I am indeed honored to commend you on the many ways you have been an integral part of this community. Not only have you sponsored initiatives that Alpha Kappa Alpha has promoted, but you have also partnered with the Rocky Mount community to support programs and projects initiated here. Donations of paintings by renowned African American artists to the local Art Center, services and programs for low to moderate income families at an apartment complex, and financial donations to the NAACP, American Red Cross and other organizations are outstanding examples of your “Service To All Mankind.”
This chapter also has the distinction of being chartered by one of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® founders – Soror Anna Easter Brown. How proud you can be for this noteworthy privilege! During International President Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson’s Administration, wreaths were laid at the graves of each Sorority Founder and Past International President. I represented our leadership at that time – 29th International President Buckhanan Wilson and 18th Mid-Atlantic Regional Director Joyce Henderson –and join Chi Omega Chapter members on January 15, 2018 at Unity Cemetery to honor one of our founders and your charter member, Anna Easter Brown, by laying a wreath at her grave site. This was such an honor for me, and I know for the members of Chi Omega.
Chi Omega Chapter, your first one hundred years has been a centennial worthy of celebration. May your next one hundred be as laudatory!
Congratulations again.
With sisterly love and admiration,
Diamond Soror Marye J. Jeffries
11th Mid-Atlantic Regional Director Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated ®
To My Sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Chi Omega Chapter:
Congratulations on your Centennial Anniversary. With only six members, the chapter was chartered on December 19, 1925, in Brick, North Carolina, at Brick Junior College, by one of the founders of the Sorority, Anna Easter Brown. When the college closed, the chapter moved to Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
The chapter’s longevity is due to its dedicated commitment to the ideals, purposes, and mission for which Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was founded: “Service to All Mankind.” For 100 years, Chi Omega has had a profound impact on the Rocky Mount community through its various projects and programs, from donations to furnish a room at Parkview Hospital to Fashionettas to hosting the Ebony Fashion Fair, and the Boys Choir of Harlem. The chapter has provided and continues to provide service to the community through food banks, clothing drives, and scholarships to hundreds of students in the Rocky Mount community. Chi Omega has been host to International Leadership Seminars, Mid-Atlantic Regional Conferences, and Cluster Meetings.
On October 1, 2011, the citizens of Rocky Mount celebrated “Anna Easter Brown Day” with the unveiling of the North Carolina State Historical Marker at the entrance of Unity Cemetery, the final resting place of one of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s founders, Anna Easter Brown. There was also a City Marker placed in front of her residence.
I remain honored that the celebration occurred during my administration and proud to be a part of that history.
Again, congratulations, Chi Omega Chapter on your 100th Anniversary.
With Warm and Sisterly Love,
Dr. Linda Henry Gilliam
17th Mid-Atlantic Regional Director
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. 2010-2014

Your journey, which began with a small, dedicated group of charter members, has flourished into a powerful legacy of leadership and unwavering commitment to uplifting those around you.
You celebrate a century of remarkable achievements, including your dedication to education, community enrichment, and social action. The bonds of sisterhood you've nurtured have not only strengthened your members but have also served as a force for positive change.
