PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
3
Dear Members The 103rd Annual General Meeting is fast approaching and we look forward to members’ participation at the meeting on Sunday, 29 April 2018 at the Activity Suite, Sports Complex at Level 3. I am pleased to announce that as part of the Club’s continued effort to serve members better, the Club is upgrading its WIFI connectivity within the Club’s premises. Work has commenced in January 2018 to upgrade the current 200Mbps to 1Gbps. During this interim period, members may experience difficulty in the internet connectivity and we seek your understanding in this matter. Upon completion in Q2 of 2018, members will expect a seamless surfing experience in the Club. Good news from the Regional Networking Committee, the Club has established more reciprocal and affiliate arrangements. The following Clubs have been added to our regional club network and they are; American Club Taipei, Taiwan, Colombo Swimming Club, Sri Lanka, Sutera Harbour Resort, Kota Kinabalu, East Malaysia. Members will enjoy wider regional access to more golfing and social facilities when you next visit these Clubs. Members may refer to the Regional Network page for more details on bookings and reservations. To ensure the accuracy of the Club’s membership database, members are encouraged to update their particulars with the Club whenever applicable. Forms may be obtained from the Front Office or downloaded via the Club’s website at www. chineseswimmingclub.org.sg. Look out and take your pick with the myriad of sports and lifestyle activities, as well as F&B events which are specially planned for members of all ages in our newsletter. Mark your calendar for the Easter Flea Market on 1 April 2018 at the Arrival Pavilion. Kids can look forward to a fun-filled Easter Egg Hunt at the Club. There is more information on events in the Bulletin page. Last but not least, on behalf of the Management Committee and Administrative staff, I would like to wish all members a Happy and Blessed Easter holiday. Shalom and God Bless
Edwin Lee . President
MANAGING EXPECTATIONS
A
good result at the Singapore National Age Group Swimming Championships is hugely important to the swimmer. After all, they are the ones working extremely hard once and often in the water twice a day in order to achieve this success. A good result is also important to the coach as it reiterates that the workouts that they have put in place prior to the meet, have worked. The third group of people involved in this ‘result’ are parents. They have possibility the hardest job of all. They have to invest hugh amounts of time, not only getting the athlete to the pool for workouts but also having to wait for a further two hours before going home in order to repeat the process the following day! There is no doubt they invest financially but perhaps the largest investment is emotional. The ups and downs of being a parent are very often goes understated. However, a swimming parent has to not only feel empathy for the result their child achieves but also has to encourage and motivate them.
IAN TURNER
Good luck and swim fast at the Nationals That is, unless the swimmer is a very gifted and talented athlete! Be aware, that within a nation's population there are very few really talented and gifted swimmers!! How many Joseph Schooling (Joe) can we expect within a population of 5 million? Even Joe was not a great swimmer at an early age but his tenacity and determination prevailed. Be aware that it is generally the ‘slow burner’ who succeeds in the long term. Success at an early age is no guarantee of success as a teenager.
This swimmer-coach-parent relationship is not unique to Singapore. It happens all over the world. Neither is it exclusive to swimming.
If we are not careful, expecting world beating results help create unwanted anxiety for both the parent and child. This is to be avoided at all costs. Parents often pass on this anxiety to coach, who in turn, gets stressed! Perhaps some parents feel that they can ‘park’ their problems and subsequently the result will happen. Unfortunately this is not the case. This combination of helping the youngster to set goals and the subsequent anxiety felt by the parent is evident in all age group sports and is not unique to swimming. My advice in the formative years of a child’s swimming development is to try and avoid defining success and failure in terms of winning and losing. Instead, use the youngster’s personal best as a guide. A time within three percent of a swimmer's personal best is a good strong swim. Within two percent is great. Within one percent is excellent. A new personal best is, ‘as good as it gets!’
Setting realistic targets for their child is a critical parental responsibility. However, these targets must be realistic - hard but achievable. There is little point in setting a goal that requires a time to be swum well within the National record!
The swimmer/coach/parent balance is a hugely important aspect of our sport. As is the pupil/teacher/parent relationship within school. Let’s all try and work together – after all it’s the swimmer that benefits.
As parents, if we provide the right support, then the swimmer will learn faster, perform better, have fun and have their selfesteem increased. In my experience, this approach serves as a positive experience for the swimmer to follow and helps overcome the obstacles that life throws up in the future. Always remember that in swimming we are also enhancing the life skills of independence, self-assurance and a positive mind set.
FEATURE
25M SHORT COURSE FUN CHALLENGE A PRECIOUS MOMENT Most of our members enjoyed the fun and precious moment with their children at the relay event. It was an ideal moment to foster good relationship within the family. Members commended the well organised event and it was a great exposure for the child to be motivated in the upcoming swim events. They hope to join the event at the frequency of once a year or every quarterly of the year, particularly during holiday periods. POT LUCK AND YOU Members believed food will bring people together. It was a fun event and members looked forward to organising a BBQ session by the pool! Some family members prepared food and shared among the participants. It was a great initiative to foster a closer bonding among members in the Club. They hope to see more of such events in the Club. Our winners, Mr Winston Neo (Parent) and Randall Neo (Child) participated in the 2 X 25 meter Parent and Child Relay and won the first prize in 27.32 seconds! Hard work paid off. Congratulations to all the winning teams as well as the participants!

CSC-SPGG ANNUAL FRIENDLY GAME 2018 Chinese Swimming Club and Singapore Polytechnic Graduates' Guild enjoyed a friendly match on 28 January 2018 at CSC’s 12 Lanes bowling alley. Each Club was seen sending in their best 20 bowlers for the 4-game series. The CSC team was made up of bowlers of all ages – one as young as 13 years old who just joined the youth team; bowlers from the adult team who won the championship in the Inter-Club League last October; and senior bowlers who have been with the Section for many years. It was indeed a Sunday well-spent strengthening the team spirit amongst bowlers. Given the relax atmosphere, the game was enjoyed by both Clubs. Overall, CSC triumphed SPGG with an overall score of 16:6. Well done team CSC!

TAEKWONDO ANNUAL IN-HOUSE TOURNAMENT CUM GET-TOGETHER 2017 Before we bid goodbye to 2017, the Taekwondo Section organised an in-house tournament cum get-together session on Christmas Eve last year. A total of 37 trainees and siblings signed up for the event. Our trainees gave their best performance and displayed a can-do attitude during the tournament. For siblings who signed up for the Taekwondo try-out, Coach Nordon also shared invaluable insights on sparring tactics with them. Overall, the kids and parents found the get-together enjoyable as they immersed themselves in the bowling session and scrumptious dinner which was arranged after the tournament. We would like to express our appreciation to all the parents for their continued support of the training programme and to Coach Nordon for working so hard in mentoring the trainees.
It’s the friends we meet along the way that help us appreciate the journey.
