Lucca (Esperanza) is honored to join the cast of ESPERANZA RISING in bringing this beloved classic of Hispanic literature to the Mainstage for the first time at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte. An alumna of the inaugural pre-college cohort at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City, Lucca has performed in 1984 & A CHRISTMAS CAROL, both at Theatre Charlotte; and as Riccardo in MARICELA DE LA LUZ LIGHTS THE WORLD for OnStage at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte. She is a current member of the International Thespian Society and Theatre Charlotte’s Season Advisory Panel where she enjoys nerding it out over scripts with fellow thespians. Lucca is a recipient of Northwest School of the Arts’ Outstanding Drama Major Award (middle program) and a top ten NC Theatre Conference Excellence in Acting Award. She would like to thank Alicia for this opportunity and championing Latino voices and stories in theatre.




Isabel (Mama) is thrilled to be back in a Mainstage show at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte! Isabel is a graduate from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and audiences may have seen her performing on our stage as Sophie (original and 2025 production of THE INVISIBLE BOY), Cinderella (GRIMMZ FAIRY TALES), Blue Dragon (DRAGONS LOVE TACOS), Paloma (TROPICAL SECRETS: HOLOCAUST REFUGEES IN CUBA), Dragon (SHREK THE MUSICAL), Cecile/US Lily (ANNIE), Lion (THE LION & THE LITTLE RED BIRD), Mike Flannery (PIGS IS PIGS), and Eighth Grader & Others (DIARY OF A WIMPY KID). She has also acted in productions for Three Bone Theatre, The Lotus Project, Sigmon Theatrical, and many others. In addition, Isabel works as a Choreographer around the area and is a self-proclaimed box office extraordinaire. She would like to thank everyone for supporting her journey thus far!




Melissa (Abuelita/Hortensia) is an actor, puppeteer and designer working in this crazy beautiful entertainment world bringing characters and environments to life since she can remember. She is excited to be back this season performing at the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte. Past credits include Tortoise (HARE & TORTOISE) at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, puppeteer for Bonnie/Baby Orangutan (LEAKEY’S LADIES) at Drama of Works, Grandma Helene (FREAKY FRIDAY THE MUSICAL), Break Fast (TIGHTS) and Fenris Ulf (THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE). Melissa would like to thank her friends and family for their love & support, especially her wife Sarah and their pup, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy.




Julio (Miguel) is thrilled to make his debut at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte! Favorite credits include Jack (INTO THE WOODS), Angelo (MEASURE FOR MEASURE), and Chip Tolentino (THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE). Carlos Luis (Papa/Alfonso) is thrilled to be making his debut this season at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte. Recent credits include Mr. Mushnik (LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS) at Little Theatre of Winston-Salem, Tiny Tom (URINETOWN) at Spring Theater, and Mrs. Taylor/Roy (BAT BOY) at Camel City Playhouse. Other favorite roles include Tom Collins (RENT) at May River Theater, Che (EVITA) at South of Broadway Theater, and Agatha Trunchbull (MATILDA) at Midtown Productions. Carlos is also an accomplished wig and costume designer, having designed for productions such as PETER AND THE STARCATCHER and EVITA. Carlos is a proud Venezuelan and proud to represent both cultures in the performing arts. He would like to thank his husband David and his family for all their love and




Melissa (Marta/Storyteller 1) is a Venezuelan American performer born and raised in Charlotte, NC. She is thrilled to be back at the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte in ESPERANZA RISING. Other recent theatre credits include Electicidad (ELECTRICIDAD) at Three Bone Theater, Ozina (Off Broadway premiere, OZ IN THE AMAZON) at Actor’s Temple Theater, Patty Farrell (DIARY OF A WIMPY KID) and ELEPHANT AND Squirelle/Dog (ELEPHANT & PIGGIE’S “WE’RE IN A PLAY!”) at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, Cathy (THE LAST FIVE YEAR) at Old Courthouse Theatre, and Sister Mary Robert (SISTER ACT) at Matthews Playhouse. She would like to thank her family and friends for always supporting her.




Isabella (Isabel/Storyteller 2) is a 23-year-old Puerto Rican bilingual actress based in Charlotte, NC. She received formal training at Acting Out Studios, with classes focusing on commercial acting, film scene script acting, monologues, improvisation, and auditioning. During her time at UNC Charlotte her involvement and role within the UNC Charlotte Film Club led her to play lead and supporting roles produced by students at the university.




Allison (Swing: Storyteller 1 & 2) is a Charlotte-based actor, director, and theatre-maker. She most recently appeared as La Cuca in ELECTRICIDAD with Three Bone Theatre and performed as a Lead in THE ADVENTURES OF AVERY & MASA with Davidson Community Players. Allison trained at the Bill Esper Studio in New York City and Steppenwolf West in LA. She has recently launched her own theater group, Arachne THTR. She is excited and grateful to make her debut with Children’s Theatre of Charlotte as a Swing, and values being part of Charlotte’s evolving theatre community.



Mariana Corrales (Swing: Mama & Abuelita) is thrilled to make her debut with Children’s Theatre of Charlotte as Swing for Mama and Abuelita in ESPERANZA RISING. Originally from Mexico, she has called Charlotte home for the past 15 years. A lifelong lover of theater, poetry, and storytelling, Mariana began collaborating with the Latino community in local festivals and Spanish-language productions, including COSER Y CANTAR with Reina Productions. In 2024, she joined Three Bone Theater for MEDEA, A MOJADA IN LOS ANGELES, continuing in 2025 with ELECTRICIDAD and WHAT THE END WILL BE. Professionally trained in marketing, Mariana also leads her own coaching-focused project, yet the stage holds a deeply special place in her heart. Being part of Children’s Theatre of Charlotte is a true dream come true.

Pam Muñoz Ryan is an American author and the 2026 U.S. nominee for the international Hans Christian Andersen Award. She is the author of ECHO, a Newbery Honor book and the recipient of the Kirkus Prize. She has written over forty books, including the novels ESPERANZA RISING, BECOMING NAOMI LEÓN, RIDING FREEDOM, PAINT THE WIND, THE DREAMER, ECHO, and Mañanaland. She is the author recipient of the National Education Association’s Civil and Human Rights Award, the Virginia Hamilton Literary Award for Multicultural Literature, and is twice the recipient of the Pura Belpré Medal and the Willa Cather Award.
Her novel, Esperanza Rising, was commissioned as a play by the Minneapolis Children’s Theatre and has been performed in many venues around the U.S. including The Goodman in Chicago, and the Majestic Cutler Theater, in Boston.
Other selected honors include the PEN USA Award, the Américas Award, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor, and the Orbis Pictus Award. She was born and raised in Bakersfield, California, (formerly Pam Bell) holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from San Diego State University and lives near San Diego with her family. Many of her stories reflect her half-Mexican heritage.

Alicia Tafoya (Director) is an arts administrator, director, and educator with extensive experience in theatre, community engagement, and youth arts programming. She currently serves in the Teen Loft at ImaginOn, where she develops and leads creative programming that empowers teens through performance, storytelling, and artistic exploration. Prior to her work at ImaginOn, Ms. Tafoya was the Artistic and Community Relations Fellow at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte and previously served as Head of Performance at University of Central Oklahoma. Her career bridges artistic leadership and education, with a focus on connecting theatrical work to meaningful community dialogue. A director, performer, new work dramaturg, and certified Michael Chekhov instructor, Ms. Tafoya has directed productions spanning multiple genres, including Latinx Theatre, opera, Theatre of Social Change, and Theatre for Young Audiences. Selected directing credits include ELEPHANT & PIGGIE’S: “WE ARE IN A PLAY!” and GRACE FOR PRESIDENT, TOMAS AND THE LIBRARY LADY, DON’T LET THE PIGEON DRIVE THE BUS!, and THE LION AND THE LITTLE RED
BIRD at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte. Ms. Tafoya holds a Bachelor’s degree in Acting and Directing from Southern Utah University and a Master of Fine Arts in Performance and Pedagogy of Acting and Directing from Texas Tech University. Through her combined experience as a director, educator, and arts leader, she brings creativity, collaboration, and a deep commitment to youth development to every space she serves.
Gabrieal Gonzales (Music Director) is a professional opera singer and veteran music educator with 24 years of experience teaching general music across K–12 settings. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance and a Master of Music from Texas Tech University. As a performer, Mr. Gonzales has appeared in leading and supporting roles with distinguished companies including Cimarron Circuit Opera, Utah Opera, Utah Festival Opera, Cincinnati Opera, and Opera San Antonio. In addition to his operatic work, he has performed with the Ken Davis Chorale and the San Antonio Chamber Chorale, further demonstrating his versatility as a choral and ensemble artist. A dedicated educator, Mr. Gonzales holds active teaching licenses in both Texas and North Carolina. He has also served
as a musical director for CTC productions, including MEAN GIRLS JR. (2024), CATS JR. (2023) for Onstage, and TOMAS AND THE LIBRARY LADY (2022). He is currently in his fourth year developing and leading a new music program for CMS at Piney Grove Elementary, where he continues to foster musical excellence and inspire young musicians. Through his combined experience as a performer and educator, Gabrieal Gonzales brings artistry, leadership, and a deep commitment to music education to every stage and classroom he serves.
Anita J. Tripathi (Scenic Designer) is a Charlotte based Scene Designer. Professional design credits include: Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey (LORT B), Greenbrier Valley Theatre, Virginia Stage Company (LORT D, Resident Scene Designer), and PlayMakers Repertory Company (LORT D). Anita has also worked regionally as both a Properties Designer and Scenic Charge and has assisted Tony Award winning designer David Gallo on several productions. Anita is currently the Chair and Associate Professor at Davidson College. She has taught students scene design, lighting design, scene painting, stage properties, model mak-
ing, and portfolio/resume development. Her work has been featured as a finalist at the World Stage Design Exhibition in Cardiff and she received a Fellowship from the United States Institute for Theatre Technology to support her research in India. She holds an M.F.A. in Scene Design from the University of South Carolina and is a member of United Scenic Artists Local 829.
Gordon W. Olson (Lighting Designer) is happy to return to Children’s Theatre of Charlotte in the role of lighting designer for this production of ESPERANZA RISING. Gordon’s work has been seen here at CTC in DIARY OF A WIMPY KID THE MUSICAL, ANNIE, AKEELAH AND THE BEE, MADAGASCAR, THE INVISIBLE BOY, BATBOY! THE MUSICAL, and SCHOOL HOUSE ROCK LIVE! Local work has included: THE CHINESE LADY, THE CHILDREN, CONFEDERATES (Three Bone Theatre); SPAMALOT, ANNIE, CHICAGO (Davidson Community Players); LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, 1984, THE PRODUCERS, PETER AND THE STARCATCHER, SPRING AWAKENING, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, THE ADDAMS FAMILY, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, FOOTLOOSE (Theatre Charlotte); PIPPIN, TWELFTH NIGHT, HAMLET, SPRING AWAKENING (UNC-Charlotte). Regional credits include work for: James Madison University, Actor’s Theatre of Louisville, Mich-
igan Opera Theatre, Florida Grand Opera, Houston Grand Opera, San Antonio Opera. Broadway credits include; JERUSALEM-Assistant Lighting Designer (Tony Nominated), GOOD PEOPLE-Associate Lighting Designer. Gordon received his MFA from The University of Texas at Austin.
Leticia M. Delgado (Costume Designer) is excited to design costumes for ESPERANZA RISING. It is her first collaboration with Children’s Theatre of Charlotte. Leticia is the resident costume designer for Ballet Lubbock and head of costume design at the University of Texas at El Paso. She recently designed costumes for THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST at the Illinois Shakespeare Festival and ESCOBAR’S HIPPO for Illinois State University. Costume designs in preproduction include SNOW WHITE for Ballet Lubbock and ORLANDO for the University of Texas at El Paso. Recent costume design work includes, PLUMAS NEGRAS and Los empeños de una casa. She is co-author of The Art and Practice of Costume Design (Routledge, 2017), member of the artEquity BIPOC Leadership Circle (2020), serves on the Latinx Theatre Commons Steering Committee, Conference Planner of the Latinx, Indigenous and the
Americas Focus Group (Association of Theatre in Higher Education), member of USITT and La Gente.
Lindsay Putnam (Sound Designer) is a sound designer and educator whose works include award-winning escape rooms, musicals, plays, devised pieces, and new works. She has designed for Cortland Repertory Theatre, Southeastern Summer Theatre Institute, Pacific Conservatory Theatre, InGen Productions, Ground & Field Festival, Pegasus PlayLab, TheatreUCF, Solvang Festival Theatre, The Escape Ventures, and online streaming platforms. Her most recent sound designs at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte include TIARA’S HAT PARADE, GRACE FOR PRESIDENT, and PINOCCHIO. She has also held positions at many venues nationally including Disneyland, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, South Coast Repertory Theatre, and Pacific Conservatory Theatre. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Sound Design at University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
