NEW SCREENING GUIDELINES REFLECT NATIONAL TREND Colon and rectal cancers are on the rise in America, and at an alarming rate for younger adults. According to the American Cancer Society, since 1994, colon and rectal cancers have increased 51% among adults under the age of 50. According to Dr. Omar Khokhar, an OSF HealthCare Gastroenterologist, these changes reflect what he and his colleagues see in practice.”I think it’s a relevant change. It captures what we are seeing,” said Dr. Khokhar. “Anecdotally I have seen patients in their early 30s now with colon cancer or rectal cancer, so I think it’s important that we start to get involved and start intervening earlier to capture those folks earlier to prevent more cancer from being diagnosed.” These screenings don’t have to be intimidating. The gold standard in colorectal cancer screening is a colonoscopy. However, patients can also choose one of several other non-invasive tests, including home stool tests available by prescription. Dr. Khokhar says to talk to your doctor about your options.

Soulful Chicago Book Fair Showcases Black Authors Continued from page 1 BY KATHERINE NEWMAN

The Soulful Chicago Book Fair is returning for a third year on July 15 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on 61st St. between S. Cottage Grove Ave. and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. in Woodlawn. The event showcases African American authors and provides live entertainment and great food options. “Being an author, it was important for me to have a place where black writers got a decent stage because you have many of us out here now who are self-published and there is a difference in the industry where, if you are a self-published author, you may or may not get carried by a store, an agent, or a publishing company,” said Asadah Kirkland, author and founder of the Soulful Chicago Book Fair. In creating the Soulful Chicago Book Fair, Kirkland wanted to give those selfpublished black authors an opportunity to share their stories. “My thing is, who has time to be waiting for permission to come out? The Soulful Chicago Book Fair is an avenue for writers who speak about a ton of issues in the black community that never really get to be heard in mainstream and it gives each author a stage,” said Kirkland. The book fair takes up four city blocks and each block has a different theme or writing style. One block is fiction writing, another is non-fiction, one block is designated for children and children story writer’s, and finally, there is are two stages for professional and local performers. People can come to buy books, meet authors, children can play and read, there will be live music, and a food truck festival. “The addition we have this year, that started last year, is the Woodlawn food truck festival and that’s where you have food trucks now with all different types of cuisine set up at the

opposite end of the main stage at our festival so people are eating incredible food and just having a really awesome time doing everything and anything literary,” said Kirkland. Even though Kirkland is not from Chicago, she started the Soulful Chicago Book Fair as a way to show the world the talented black writers, performers, and artists that live in Chicago. “Chicago has a level of excellence in the black

community that doesn’t get promoted at all. You hear about the violence but seldom do you get to see the cultural excellence of the various communities that exist,” said Kirkland. There is still a big fundraising push happening, Kirkland is looking for specific types of donors to keep the vision of the book fair in motion. “This is a grassroots movement, it is not funded by big corporations at all.

We know there are some industries out there that would give us money at the drop of a dime but because they represent products that further debilitate our community we are not going to accept that money. It needs to be money from clean hands and people who have companies that further the community,” said Kirkland For more information visit www.soulfulchicagobookfair. com.

Organization makes an impact in the summer and all year long BY SARAH LIPO

By The Hand Club is an after school program that serves children from dangerous and under-resourced neighborhoods in Chicago. The organization is continuing its programming for kids this year at various locations for 5-6 weeks during the summer months. The bulk of the programming is done during the school year, said Allison Daze, director of fund development for By The Hand. “We

also recognize we want to be in the lives of our students all year long,” she added. Lamont Washington is the site director at the By The Hand Moving Everest site. This site is the newest location. “The summer program is a continuation of what’s happening during the school year,” Washington said. Programming includes field trips, a focus on literacy, and a spiritual component. Programming also varies depending on the age group. Participants usually have a theme each

summer for their programming. “This coming summer focuses on career preparedness,” Daze said. Daze describes the summer programming as a “safe and positive community.” The program was first located in Cabrini-Green and included 16 enrollees. Today, that number has shot upwards to 1360 with four locations throughout the city and Daze said the goal is to keep growing. The goal is to love children holistically, Daze added, and offer

underserved kids throughout the city a chance to live a more abundant life. Lamont said the vision of By The Hand is important to him. “I really love the faith component and the opportunity to teach our children... I’ve never seen a mission, vision and goals anywhere close to how By The Hand Club has theirs structured,” Washington said. Daze said she hopes that children who participated in By The Hand continue to be productive

individuals and that they continue “giving back in whatever career they are called to.” By The Hand is making an impact not only on students, said Lamont, but on the entire community. “I think we are making a major impact on the people who live in the surrounding area... But of course, if you touch the students, you have no choice but to touch the families, and if you touch the families, you have no choice but to touch the entire community,” he said.

Two Chicago Musicians Reflect On The Evolution Of Hip Hop BY KATHERINE NEWMAN

During the month of June, we celebrate Black Music Month and recognize past, present, and future African American musicians in Chicago and around the world. Chicago artists, Joey Price and Kenneth Crump took time during Black Music Month to reflect on their inspirations, goals, and experiences as music makers. Kenneth Crump, also known as NeodotcoM, was born and raised on the South side of Chicago and currently makes music that is a fusion electro, boom-bap, trap, and golden age hip-hop. “I’m an author, mathematician, musician, and hip-hop historian for the city of Chicago. Growing up, I thought I was going to be an astronaut,” said Crump. “My freshman year of college I wrote a rhyme and I just thought it was the best thing ever. By my sophomore year of college, I wasn’t really into the math anymore and I was more into the words. I told my parents that I was not going to be the next Bill Gates, I was going to be the next Sean Carter.” Joey Price grew up on the West side of Chicago in Oak Park and only started making music about nine years ago. Price got his start first with poetry and was inspired to turn his writing into music after hearing the rhymes of popular hip-hop artists Jay Z, Kanye West, and Lupe Fiasco. “It’s hip-hop but the best way I describe my music is timeless, I have a theory that music needs to be transcendent, that means either transcendent of race, nationality, country, continent and even time,” said Price. Both artists mentioned that they have seen changes in the black music industry over their time as artists. “In the past, a majority of major music executives started off as artists themselves and they had a level of responsibility for the culture,” said Crump. Even more than that, Crump said it is obvious to him the executives behind many new mainstream hip hop and rap artists aren’t interested in preserving or investing in black culture “They may have liked the music or the

product but I don’t believe they are personally invested in our culture and the people as much as the executives in the 90’s were,” said Crump Similarly, Price said that over the last decade he has seen hip-hop evolve into a more commercial version of itself. “At its root, hip-hop is the voice and it’s an insight into what’s going on in an artist’s neighborhood or city. I think the commercialization of rap changed the culture so now there is a lot of need for instant gratification now. With platforms like Sound Cloud, it creates instant fame and people aren’t concerned with the voice anymore,” said Price. Despite the changes in industry standards, both musicians are motivated to get more involved and keep making music. You can find music from Joey Price, Joey Price Music, and Kenneth Crump, NeodotcoM, on Sound Cloud.

Kenneth Crump (Pictured) better known as the musical artists NeodotcoM remembers the way black culture was preserved and respected through music in the 90’s. Today, he believes that major music executives are no longer invested in black culture.

New Book Traces the Journey from the ‘Margins’ to Inspiring Respectful Workforce Development Washington, D.C. — Citizens “living on the margins, living on the sidelines” must be treated with dignity and be seen as “Candidates” for opportunities, not as clients, not as numbers, and not as a forgotten population by overworked, uninspired bureaucrats, according to Carla Harris, in her new book FaithWorks: An Innovative Approach to Workforce Development. Harris, CEO of the DC-based firm ImageWorks, boldly contributes to the national conversation about changing human services for the betterment of citizens in transition as part of the evolving shift from welfare to Workforce Development. As comfortable in the “Hood as I am in the White House,” Harris traces her own journey from the margins, and outlines an inspiring approach to “humanizing human services” that views “our fellow citizens as valuable men and women with potential, as neighbors who deserve respectful assistance on their journeys to jobs, careers, and all the happiness they envision for their families.” Harris’ new book builds on the robust discussions and presentations during ImageWorks’ 2017 Hiring from the Sidelines conference for Workforce Development and human services professionals, which was sponsored in part by the Salvation Army National Area Command. “In what we call a transformational approach,” Harris says, “Hiring from the Sidelines, and now FaithWorks, demands that Workforce Development professionals create an environment, an ecology, that focuses on prioritizing the HUMANITY in the provision of human services to our fellow citizens in need, our ‘marginalized’ job seekers on society’s economic ‘sidelines!’ ” Harris asks, echoing the powerful message

Carla Harris

in FaithWorks: “Who more than Returning Citizens, men and women on public assistance, and mature workers managing the changing economy need imagination, inspiration, creativity and respect for the individual?” Harris insists that Workforce Development professions must view these “so-called SOFT SKILLS” as critical as polished resumes, practical action plans, and targeted social services. Harris says that human services professionals must move “beyond the data” into a more “dynamic focus on people first,” as part of a Workforce Development approach that “blends the technical and practical with the creative and supple.” “A job is important, of course, even an entry-level job!” Harris concedes. “But for that job to become a stepping stone to a better life, a more solvent future, case managers, program facilitators, trainers, social workers, job coaches, developers, even agency directors and policy-makers, must all take the time to value and incorporate the personal histories, family stories, of marginalized job seekers, so that their searches for employment become part of a powerful process that builds their capacity to map plans for their selfsufficiency.”

Get Sugary Drinks Out of Hospitals BY MARK CUCUZZELLA, MD

Imagine you’re going into surgery. You’re under strict doctor’s orders to avoid solids. But you’re drinking plenty of clear liquids like juice, Gatorade, and Sprite before the surgery. And you’re looking forward to the “protein shake” that the nurses have promised as a meal replacement after the procedure. Then you realize that you’re on track to consume 30 teaspoons of sugar. The World Health Organization recommends no more than 6 teaspoons of sugar, per day, for healthy people. Physicians know that excessive sugar consumption leads to a host of ailments. Yet today’s hospitals are veritable sugar shacks. This doesn’t make sense. Our bodies weren’t designed to process copious amounts of sugar. Excess sugar causes our pancreases to produce excess insulin, which

disrupts our metabolisms and causes our bodies to store its extra energy as body fat. Sugar consumption drives America’s obesity epidemic, which accounts for nearly one in five U.S. deaths. Folks who drink one or more sugary beverages per day are 26 percent more likely to develop diabetes than those who have one or fewer drinks per month. Researchers have even linked sugar to certain cancers. One study of 60,000 women showed that women who consumed excessive sugar were more likely to develop uterine cancer. It’s unfortunate that hospitals foist so much sugar on patients. The “protein shakes” given to people recovering from surgery are loaded with sugars like corn syrup and commercially refined oils. For example, each serving of Ensure’s “Original Milk Chocolate Nutrition Shake” has 33 grams of carbohydrates -- i.e., sugar -- while

Physicians know that excessive sugar consumption leads to a host of ailments. Yet today’s hospitals are veritable sugar shacks. just 9 grams of protein. By contrast, a serving of chicken drumsticks contains nearly 30 percent more protein. Another “protein shake,” Boost’s “Chocolate Sensation” has just 10 grams of protein and 41 grams of carbohydrates. That’s more than a can of Coca Cola. Patients are also encouraged to consume Gatorade to get electrolytes. But just 32 ounces of Gatorade contains 56 grams of sugar -- double what the World Health Organization recommends per day. In most hospitals, patients can choose from a smorgasbord of sugar. Vending machines are packed with candy and soda -- and cafeterias serve dessert with most meals. One in five U.S. hospitals

even houses a fast-food restaurant like McDonald’s! Medical establishments must do better. That’s why, for years, I’ve advocated for my hospital -- West Virginia’s Jefferson Medical Center (JMC) -- to remove all sugary drinks from its vending machines and cafeterias. We just did so. JMC is one of the first hospitals in the country to offer low-carb meals to its diabetic patients. That’s hugely important. Recent studies reveal that a carb-restricted diet can slash long-term blood sugar levels for diabetics. JMC offers handbooks, videos, and recipes to help discharged patients adopt well-balanced, lowsugar diets. In West Virginia -- the

most obese state in the nation -efforts like these are critical. Other hospitals are stepping up. In 2012, the Connecticut Mental Health Center began a “Sound Mind Sound Body” Initiative to improve the health of employees and patients. Now, patient meals only include water, coffee, tea, milk, and sugar-free juice. Geisinger Health Systems in Pennsylvania went sugar free for beverages in January. And other hospitals are swapping sugary protein shakes for sugar-free yogurt, which is full of protein, healthy fats, and “good bacteria” that aids digestion. Hospitals have a duty to make people healthy. They can start fulfilling that mission by banning sugary drinks. Host a Better-for-You Barbecue

Family Features — More daylight in the evening, birds chirping in the morning and plants sprouting up from the ground are signs that Spring has sprung. With the return of outdoor activities and sunshine, it’s the perfect time to build on your family’s healthy habits with farm fresh foods you can trust for quality nutrition. Start by looking for fresh and wholesome foods at the grocery store. Milk is one of the original farm-to-table foods that contains nine essential nutrients, including high-quality protein, potassium and calcium. Milk is also remarkably simple, with just three ingredients: milk and vitamins A and D. Compare that to plant based alternatives, which often have more

than 10 ingredients, including added salt, sugar, stabilizers and emulsifiers like locust bean gum, sunflower lecithin and gellan gum. Many people don’t realize that the real dairy milk at the local grocery store often originates from dairy farms about 300 miles away and arrives on shelves in just 48 hours, on average, after leaving the farm. Try a twist on farm-fresh ingredients with an egg-infused breakfast twist on a classic Italian salad. When paired with an 8-ounce glass of milk, this delicious omelet fulfills 80 percent of your daily calcium value for a calcium-rich breakfast. Family Features — A traditional backyard barbecue is typically filled with a wide array of tempting foods that make it hard to keep a healthy eating plan on track. With a few simple modifications to your menu, you can transform your grilling party into a spread of better-for-you foods you can still enjoy. Get creative on the grill. An easy swap like chicken or pork instead of burgers and brats is an instant nutrition boost. Use wood chips or a marinade to create a main dish so tasty you’ll forget it’s a healthconscious choice. Put produce front and center. There’s no time like summer to enjoy the bounty of the garden, so pile on the veggies in place of dense, calorie-laden sides. A crisp, refreshing salad, lightly seasoned veggies on the grill and even fresh raw veggies with a light yogurt dip can all be healthier additions to your barbecue menu. Make apps amazing. A health-conscious meal doesn’t have to mean eliminating entire courses. Appetizers while you wait for the grill to heat are practically a requirement, after all. Instead of the typical rich, creamy dips, try a lighter approach, like these cracker canapes. Add a special touch with Crunchmaster crackers, which are gluten-free, non-GMO and full of flavor. FASHION North Carolina’s Coalesce Beauty Brings Solutions to Student Debt While Offering Alternative Work Experiences to the Typical 9 to 5 Coalesce Beauty founder and CEO, Theresa Watson, its principals and shareholders recently announced their newly created Student Ambassador Program, designed to give students at Historical Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU’s) an opportunity to “earn while they learn.” Matriculating students at HBCU’s can now earn commissions at a rate of 16% for every dollar sold of Coalesce Beauty products while developing valuable sales skillsets via the company’s high-tech sales training platform which will be delivered via video. The program is dedicated to helping increase the graduation rate of HBCU students by providing them with alternative income opportunities without having the required time constraints of your typical 9 to 5. This initiative encourages fiscal responsibility and provides a vehicle to assist students in paying off their tuitions and fees prior to graduation. “With the current student loan debt reaching twice the national credit card debt of Americans, we must address the need of our students to offset the debt levels they face upon graduation. We believe,

Lime Crime Announces Acquisition by Tengram Capital Partners Lime Crime, the trendsetting makeup brand known for its vibrant, cruelty-free and vegan products, announced recently it has been acquired by Tengram Capital Partners, a leading private equity firm that focuses exclusively on branded consumer and retail companies. Stacy Panagakis, formerly General Manager of Fresh, also joins as Chief Executive Officer. Founded by entrepreneurs Doe Deere and Mark Dumbelton in 2008, Lime Crime is a pioneering, digitally native beauty brand and a cult favorite among fashion-forward beauty aficionados. Through continuous creativity and innovation, Lime Crime stands apart by creating a magical world where beauty is redefined, and unabashed self-expression is encouraged. For years, Lime Crime has set trends that have taken the beauty industry by storm — from its Unicorn Lipsticks in a rainbow of shades and Velvetines (starting the ultra-matte liquid lip craze), to its bestselling Diamond Crushers lip toppers and most recently, Unicorn Hair (with the name that says it all). The brand today has become an international phenomenon, with customers from Los Angeles to Singapore to London. Lime Crime is in high demand at leading retailers including Bloomingdales, Riley Rose and Ulta.com, where it ranks as a leading color cosmetics brand, and has recently launched in the UK, originally online with Cult Beauty, and recently with FeelUnique and Selfridges. The Tengram acquisition will support Lime Crime’s growth strategy, creating more ways for its passionate consumer base to experience the brand’s unique products and signature whimsical universe. A digital-first company, Lime Crime will continue to focus on its flagship Limecrime.com, while also pursuing

select retail partnerships to make its beloved products available to more unicorns, wherever they shop. After listening to its consumers, the brand is creating a broader selection of products, introducing new categories and bringing its innovative formulations to further enchant the Lime Crime global community. Richard Gersten, Partner at Tengram, stated, “Lime Crime is truly unique among beauty brands, with a powerful following and a deep understanding of its consumers and their expressive approach to cosmetics. We have tremendous appreciation for what Doe, Sasha Valentine and the team have built over the past ten years: a revolutionary brand that empowers consumers to express themselves and inspires them to push past the traditional limits of beauty. In an era of beauty brand proliferation, Lime Crime’s authenticity and innovation stand above the rest. Lime Crime is a tremendous fit in our strong portfolio of beauty brands, and we look forward to leveraging our experience to help the Lime Crime team achieve its growth prospects.” Stacy Panagakis joined Lime Crime as Chief Executive Officer on June 18, bringing invaluable industry experience and a proven track record of successfully scaling beauty brands. Most recently, Ms. Panagakis served as General Manager of Fresh, where she built the North America affiliate within the Global Fresh structure. Through cultivating and leading a high-performance team, Ms. Panagakis drove the brand’s success and maintained the leadership position at Sephora through strong retail partnerships and a clear digital strategy to drive traffic. Ms. Panagakis reimaged the direct to consumer strategy to ensure the customer was at the center of Fresh.com and within Fresh retail stores

by always focusing on the synergy of an omni model. Prior to that, she held executive roles at Origins Natural Resources, Stila Cosmetics, and Clinique. “I’m delighted to be joining the company at this pivotal moment,” said Ms. Panagakis. “Lime Crime is a millennial brand with a message that resonates with women everywhere — ‘it’s OK to be bold, experiment and have fun!’ The partnership with Tengram is an important next step in the brand’s evolution, bringing deep industry expertise and greater opportunities to offer unicorns and women everywhere the Lime Crime magical universe. As we expand the brand’s footprint and offerings, Lime Crime will continue to be a brand that stands apart, fulfilling its mission to revolutionize makeup, empower women and smash traditional boundaries.” Lime Crime’s creative vision will continue under Ms. Panagakis, who will work alongside Chief Creative Officer Sasha Valentine, an eightyear veteran of the brand. Doe Deere, Lime Crime’s co-founder and forever muse has transitioned out of day-to-day operations and has joined the Board of Directors, where she will continue to do what she loves: explore, dream and inspire unicorns around the world. Doe expressed her enthusiasm about the investment and growth opportunities for the business. “I founded Lime Crime on the belief that beauty is a form of freedom. We should all be allowed to express ourselves unapologetically. Over the last decade, unicorns all over the globe have taken that idea and made it their own, propelling us to where we are today. I am so proud of what we’ve built together and am confident Stacy, Sasha and the team will continue to build on this foundation to take Lime Crime to a whole new level!

Mend After Cancer, a cancer recovery store and community recently announced the launch of a new website to help friends, family and colleagues learn what to say, do and give patients recovering from cancer. MEND’s Founder, Lisa Lefebvre, has experience recovering from cancer having undergone 8 surgeries and treatments over the last 15 years. “Cancer patients need help healing, not another bouquet of flowers. They often don’t know what to ask for and loved ones don’t know how to help. Our products and advice help make sure cancer recovery is no longer a solo journey,” says Lefebvre. The website offers cancer recovery gift baskets of surgery pillows, hair regrowth products, radiation creams and much more based on Lefebvre’s personal experiences, medical advisors’ recommendations, and extensive research. “I know it’s not cancer– specific, but our bird houses are a thoughtful gift. People don’t realize many cancer patients are too sick to watch TV or read. Staring at blank walls is depressing so adding birds to the scenery changes the day,” adds Lefebvre. MEND is also launching After + Before, a line of pharmacy-grade nutritional supplements formulated by recovery experts, including a Harvard physician. These nutrition boosts support patients with micronutrients during the unique trials of recovery, including sleep challenges and cancer-related stress. There is also a line of ‘Every Day for Every Body’ supplements that MEND’s experts suggest everyone could benefit from. “After my surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatments, I saw a physician who prescribed custom nutritional supplements that helped me feel better, faster. That’s not always possible for everyone in recovery because of expense – or availability of a local, skilled MD. Our nutrition boosts were formulated to help people who don’t have the time or money to see an expert,” says Lefebvre. In the coming months, MEND will add thoughtful, state-specific services to heal the body, mind and spirit including experts in nutrition, oncology massage, and mental health counseling. Lefebvre and her team are also creating a Cancer Recovery Registry where patients can register for needed products and services. Friends and family can then contribute funds to the registry or simply choose a gift to send. MEND donates 10% of net profits to people who can’t afford recovery care.

Chicago Public Library Invites Teens to Imagine Doing More! This Summer

C

hicago Public Library invites teens to participate in the 2018 Teen Summer Challenge, Imagine Doing More!, available now through September 1. CPL challenges teens to make a positive impact in their local environment, individually, in pairs or groups. Teens choose one environment to investigate and change (natural, neighborhood or social-emotional), and one of four possible actions (volunteering, creating campaigns, developing projects or coordinating programs). Learn more atchipublib.org/ ImagineAtCPL. Teens are encouraged to sign up inperson at their neighborhood branch or online. The self-directed challenge is easy for teens to follow with four phases of participation. Whether it’s pledging to reduce their carbon footprint, develop a blog, build a garden or create a photography exhibit, teens’ ideas and solutions for improving the environment will be shared and celebrated. Teens can potentially earn service-learning hours, see their work recognized on the CPL website, and develop experience relevant for college or a future job. “At CPL, we believe that empowering teens to investigate what matters most to them, and guiding them to develop ideas and solutions to make a positive impact on that area, leads to a deeper connection with

their summer learning and helps builds self-confidence,” said Chicago Public Library Commissioner Brian Bannon. This year as part of the challenge, Imagine Doing More! invites teens to participate in partner institution challenges to improve the quality of their Chicago environment. All partner institutions will host Incubation Days at branches citywide to introduce unique real-world challenges for teens to solve, including: • Adler Planetarium: Reduce Light Pollution in Chicago! • Chicago Architecture Foundation: Design Your Neighborhood! • Chicago Botanic Garden: Defend Chicago’s Native Pollinators! • Environmental Law & Policy Center: Improve the Air We Breathe! • WE: Make the World A More Inclusive Place! As part of CPL’s commitment to nurture learning for all ages, CPL teen librarians and mentors create engaging and welcoming spaces designed to develop teens’ 21st century skills through interest-driven programs. Teen participants gain access to state-of the-art technology and digital resources, and discover connections to college and career pathways.

Programming, workshops, events and more take place year round at various CPL branches, including 12 dynamic YOUmedia locations. Designed to inspire collaboration and creativity, YOUmedia programs emphasize digital media, making and mentorship by engaging teens across a variety of core content areas including graphic design, photography, video, music, 2D/3D design, STEM and hands-on making. By the end of 2018 CPL will have 20 YOUmedia locations in branches citywide, including its flagship at Harold Washington Library Center, thanks to the support from Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the City of Chicago. Imagine Doing More! is made possible thanks to the generous support of BMO Harris Bank, Allstate, the Hive Chicago Fund at Chicago Community Trust, the Susan Crown Exchange, the Oppenheimer Family Foundation, and other generous donors to the Chicago Public Library Foundation. Imagine Doing More! is running now through September 1. Use #ImagineAtCPL and #CPLteens on social media to join the conversation and follow YOUmedia on Twitter (@YOUmediaChicago), Facebook (youmediachicago) and Instagram (youmediachicago). Now's The Time To Get Set For Applying To College (NAPS)-If you or someone you care about is among the 3.6 million students who will graduate high school next year, here's a hint: Vacation time is a good time for seniors and their parents to get a head start on the college application process. (NAPS)-If you or someone you care about is among the 3.6 million students who will graduate high school next year, here's a hint: Vacation time is a good time for seniors and their parents to get a head start on the college application process. You can focus on finding the right college without balancing the responsibilities of schoolwork and extracurriculars.Five Steps To College Here are five things you can do now to save time in the fall. 1. Create And Save Your Own Personal College List: Use free resources such as the College Board's bigfuture.org to search for and compare colleges, find scholarships, understand financial aid, navigate the application process from start to finish, and get reminders, tips and guidance for every step. With a profile on bigfuture.org, you can continually update your list and find the college that's best for you. 2. Register For The SAT: The SAT is an important part of admission and it's accepted by all U.S. colleges and universities. The College Board recently redesigned the SAT to make it easier than ever for students to show their best work. Students can take the SAT on August 25, which gives them a chance to practice for the test without the added pressure of being in school. And students can prepare-free-by logging on to Official SAT Practice for a personalized plan, including thousands of interactive questions with instant feedback, video lessons, full-length practice tests, and test-taking tips and strategies. 3. Show Colleges You're Interested: There are many ways you can let your top colleges know you're interested in attending. Visit a campus or go on a virtual tour; participate in an online chat hosted by the admission office; follow the college on social media; request more information through an institution's online inquiry form; and give it a little bit more information about your interests. 4. Research Financial Aid: It's important to consider college costs, so the College Board's Net Price Calculator has information on potential financial aid and the true out-of-pocket costs of colleges. The summer is also a good time to gather the financial documents needed to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which opens October 1. And the Scholarship Search tool from bigfuture.org helps students find scholarships, other financial aid, and internships from more than 2,200 programs, totaling nearly $6 billion. 5. Check Your Fee Waiver Eligibility: HELP WANTED DRIVERS BUCKLE UP WITH A NEW CAREER! $1600 Sign-on Bonus with pay up to .52 per mile! EXPERIENCED DRIVERS *Flatbed *Step Deck *Van *LTL Reefer.
