NAACP Calls Out FBI’s Latest Report on “Black Extremists” as Déjà Vu
Baltimore, MD- According to a journalistic investigation by the news outlet Foreign Policy (FP) the FBI’s counterterroism division has identified a new threat-black identity extremists (BIE). The FBI’s assessment is that BIE’s “perception of police brutality against African Americans have spurred retaliatory lethal violence against law enforcement”. In response to this report the interim NAACP president and CEO Derrick Johnson said in a released statement, “In a time when white supremacists are marching down city streets with loaded weapons and tiki torches- organizing rallies of terror around the country - it comes as a great shock that the FBI would decide to target black identity groups protesting police brutality and their right to exist free of harm as a threat. “Sadly, this report comes as no surprise from an organization that has a history of targeting black civil rights groups and leaders, including wiretapping Martin Luther King Jr. and others fighting for civil rights in the 1960s. “We do have a real threat in the United States and it’s the rise of right-wing

extremists, white nationalists and white supremacists, who have been emboldened by this administration. In light of this report, the NAACP is resolved to double down on our efforts to advance the rights of black Americans and people of color across this country. We remain steadfast and immovable in our fight for justice and equality - and we are not afraid,” he said.

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx and Cure Violence founder Gary Slutkin recently discussed possible solutions to combat violence in Chicago at a panel discussion entitled, “The Urban Crisis and Chicago’s Future: Violence and the Law.” The event was held at Roosevelt University on 425 S. Wabash Ave. “We’re talking about a Criminal Justice system that has existed for 150 years,” she said. “Time is of the essence to move very quickly on things we can change,” Foxx said. “I started my career in the State’s Attorney office in the juvenile system and I saw young kids who were victims of trauma whether they witnessed domestic violence in their homes or even sexual assault,” she said. “They’re acting out behavior was dealt with in the justice system and not with any intervening factors to deal with the underlining trauma,” she said. “If our only response is to use the justice system without touching any of the other issues, then we will continue with the

cycle of violence,” she added. Foxx further explained that communities that are most impacted by violence have a high-concentration of criminals who have been in and out of the justice system, the highest levels of unemployment, underperforming schools and no economic investment. She said when she looks at the adult courts and jails, she currently sees large amounts of Black men in our jails. “We have invested a lot of money over the course of decades into our criminal justice system where the return on the investment hasn’t yielded the results that we need, which are safe, healthy, thriving communities,” she added. Serving about 10 months of her four year term as Cook County State’s Attorney, Foxx added she plans to find ways to solve violence in Chicago including working on solutions with other organizations. The event was moderated by NBC anchor/reporter Art Norman and sponsored by Roosevelt University’s St. Clair Drake Center for African and African American Studies.

President Barack Obama, Rep. Maxine Waters, Dr. Christine King Farris and Ambassador Andrew Young Acknowledge Dr. Joseph E. Lowery’s 96th Birthday
While President Barack Obama and Congresswoman Maxine Waters sent birthday greetings, Ambassador Andrew Young, Martin Luther King III and Dr. Martin L. King Jr’s sister, Dr. Christine King Farris were among celebrities and dignitaries on hand in Atlanta to acknowledge the 96th birthday of civil rights leader and former King confidant, Dr. Joseph E. Lowery. The historical evening was made most memorable when OWN’s “Greenleaf” star and singer Keith David; Tyler Perry’s “House of Payne” star and vocalist, Cassandra “Cassi” Davis; and gospel superstar, Yolanda Adams, mesmerized the audience with a stellar musical tribute that encapsulated the life of the well-loved nonagenarian. The Joseph and Evelyn Lowery Institute (Lowery Institute) hosted the gala which also featured Lowery Institute Change Agents packing the stage to honor the Dr. Lowery with raised fists and taking a knee. Themed “Grounded in History: Soaring Towards The Future,” the Lowery Institute also awarded movie producer, Will Packer, attorney Angela Rye, and activist Rev. William Barber, for continuing the national dialogue in support of justice and human rights, and keeping the Lowery’s legacies alive as agents of change in their respective fields. “The evening truly epitomized my dad’s life,” said Dr. Lowery’s daughter and president of the Lowery Institute, Cheryl Lowery. “People from all walks of life made it out to celebrate and producer, Kenneth Green, created an engaging musical experience, masterfully weaving elements of my mother and father’s work as agents of change juxtaposed with the Lowery Institute Change Agents who will continue to keep their legacy alive. He was able to tell their stories using all types of music from hip hop to the Morehouse College Glee Club.”

Five Everyday Reasons You Need To Know Math (NAPSI)—Many people may shy away from the subject of math, but it is important to understand math as it plays an instrumental role in making good financial decisions. A new University of Phoenix® survey found that 28 percent of respondents reported they were not confident that their current math skills are strong enough to succeed in planning for retirement and 24 percent stated they are not confident in their skills to succeed in understanding tuition assistance and save or pay for college. Additionally, 35 percent are not confident that their math skills were solid enough to start a business. Susan Hadley, Ph.D., program dean for general education at University of Phoenix, says that people could be taking a financial hit as a result of not understanding basic math and the role it plays in financial decision making. “Having a foundational knowledge of math helps people make informed purchases for major investments and expenses as The better you well as everyday spending and saving understand decisions,” Dr. Hadley said. “Being numbers, the comfortable with math is necessary better able and deeply relevant to our personal you’ll be to and professional lives. As a result, we’ve plan for your gone to great lengths to incorporate financial math into our undergraduate programs future. as it relates to everyday financial decisions.” Dr. Hadley provides financial tips for areas where math skills are important: 1. Building a budget—A monthly budget helps allot money for fixed expenses like mortgage payments as well as how to plan for expenses that

may vary from month to month, such as groceries. Also knowing how much to dedicate each month for long-term savings is helpful. Having this information can set the stage for making wise spending choices. 2. Renting vs. buying a home—There is no one-size-fits-all answer on whether to purchase a home or rent. Research the real estate market in the area where you want to live. Determine the mortgage or rent payment and the impact both options have on your lifestyle and short- and long-term financial goals. Review your budget to understand the financial implications of each choice. 3. Buying a car—People often assume that a vehicle is an investment. However, vehicles quickly depreciate. Be mindful of how much you are able to spend, financing options and, if you decide to take a loan to make the purchase, what you will pay in interest over the life of the loan. 4. Saving for college tuition—Start planning early if you intend to send your child to college and will assume responsibility for the cost or if you’re planning on going back to school yourself. Knowing the tuition breakdown per semester, costs for materials and living expenses will help you factor them into your monthly budget and savings goals. Searching for scholarship and grant opportunities and researching student loan options will help with making sure you don’t overleverage and can repay those loans in full and on time. 5. Planning for retirement—Review your budget regularly and determine what percentage of each paycheck you can contribute to a 401(k) or individual retirement account (IRA) to save for retirement. When determining the best strategy for building your retirement savings, consult a financial adviser. It’s Never Too Late
Fake Insurance Tax Form Scam Aims at Stealing Data from Tax Pros, Clients WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Service recently alerted tax professionals and their clients to a fake insurance tax form scam that is being used to access annuity and life insurance accounts. Cybercriminals currently are combining several tactics to create a complex scheme through which both tax professionals and taxpayers have been victimized. There may be variations but here’s how one scam works: The cybercriminal, impersonating a legitimate cloudbased storage provider, entices a tax professional with a phishing email. The tax professional, thinking they are interacting with the legitimate cloudbased storage provider, provides their email credentials including username and password. With access to the tax professional’s account, the cybercriminal steals client email addresses. The cybercriminal then impersonates the tax professional and sends emails to their clients, attaching a fake IRS insurance form and requesting that the form be completed and returned. The cybercriminal receives replies by fax and/or by an email very similar to the tax professional’s email – using a different email service provider or a slight variation to the tax pro’s address. The subject line varies but may be “urgent information” or a similar request. The awkwardly worded text of the email states: Dear Life Insurance Policy Owner, Kindly fill the form attached for your Life insurance or Annuity contract details and fax back to us for processing in order to avoid multiple (sic) tax bill (sic). The cybercriminal, using data from the completed form, impersonates the client and contacts the individual’s insurance company. The cybercriminal then attempts to obtain a loan or make a withdrawal from those accounts. The IRS reminds tax professionals to be aware of phishing emails, free offers and other common tricks by scammers. Those tax professionals who have data breaches should contact the IRS immediately through their Stakeholder Liaison. See Data Theft Information for Tax Professionals. Individuals who receive the insurance tax form scam email should forward it to phishing@irs.gov and then delete it. Individuals who completed and returned the fake tax form should contact their insurance carrier for assistance.

Head-to-Toe Fall Fashion Tips for Men and Women (StatePoint) We all need solid, traditional staples in our wardrobes when the weather cools. But be they scarves, jackets or socks, the trend in this fall’s clothing staples is all about putting a fun twist on classics when dressing for seasonal weather. Here are some head-to-toe fashion tips for both men and women, as brands and designers focus on basics with an interesting edge.
Scarves
Extra-long scarves and blanket scarves are in style this season, worn in just about any way you can dream up. They are being worn as wraps, shrugs, head coverings and more. Wrapped around your shoulders and crossed behind your back, blanket scarves become a wrap or shrug-like experience to keep you toasty. Worn over the head a traditional scarf will keep your ears protected from chilly breezes. And looped traditionally around your neck, longer scarves become, well, simply scarves designed to keep your neck and upper body warm into the coming season when the mercury dips.
Jackets
Belted jackets for women are on point this season, according to experts, enabling the wearer to style them with versatility to create different looks with the same garment. And making a bold resurgence are denim jackets, as this rugged fabric proves to be a nice defense against cool fall breezes. Denim jackets this season are coming in a variety of styles and lengths -- from short to long, straight edged to frilly. For men, fall outerwear is trending towards quilted or padded, and traditional jackets are being outfitted with a bit more of an edge in oversized proportions. Think classic with a twist or business attire with attitude.
Socks
In keeping with the theme of basics with a twist, think fashion-forward socks. Whether it’s rich autumn shades, jewel toned patterns, knit boot socks, or not so
basic black, brands like iconic Gold Toe are churning out on-trend accessories for the season. For instance, everyone has heard of the Little Black Dress, so Gold Toe is introducing the Little Black Sock -- a collection of women’s socks that offer styles featuring scalloped edges, stripes and subtle patterns. These wardrobe staples come in an assortment of toe covers, luxury trouser socks and lavish crews, with styles made from lace, prima cotton and microfiber, to name a few. And the brand’s new Fairisle Crew is a traditional boot sock that has a touch of bright colors as a fun nod to sweater season. When it comes to men’s socks, the season is bringing with it a blend of style and innovation. For instance, the Gold Toe Fashion Singles feature a number of bold autumn shades that incorporate Fresh 24/7 technology to help prohibit the growth of bacteria that causes odor. These styles are fashionably flexible and can be dressed up or down no matter the occasion. With colorful stripes, novelty prints and fall patterns, these socks can step up your wardrobe this season.

New Book Discusses How Christians Can Avoid Going Into Debt NASHVILLE, Tenn.,-- “God has given each of us a portion of Christ’s anointing, by which we are to live and succeed in life,” says Pastor Terrance Levise Turner. Pastor Terrance, who holds an MBA from Tennessee State University, wrote his new book, Your Wealth Is in Your Anointing, to share biblical wisdom that can help Christians get out of difficult financial situations and break the cycle of poverty that too often passes from generation to generation. The new book uses the passage from 2 Kings 4:1-7 in which a widow is miraculously saved from poverty and having her sons taken as slaves by her discovering how to release the Terrance Turner wealth potential contained in her single pot of oil. Pastor Turner uses this story as parable to deliver powerful keys and wealth-building lessons. According to Pastor Terrance, who spent seven years studying that passage, just as God multiplied the widow’s pot of oil, He will also take whatever assets believers have and multiply them as long as they make a paradigm shift that allows them to identify their own innate sources of wealth. Your Wealth Is in Your Anointing also helps readers to: Gain an understanding of wealth building

The prophet writer of Isaiah shared that just as the rain and snow fulfill the purpose for which each is sent, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. Likewise, our words do not return to us void and these same words are filled with the power to accomplish what we speak. So whether we realize it or not, we never really outperform our conversation. If we want to change our lives, we have to change the way we think of ourselves and if we want to change the way we think of ourselves, we need to change the words we say to ourselves. Life is already full of issues and challenges. Why add to them by discouraging yourself every day with negative self-talk? Beneath the surface, each of us has an inner voice on a loud speaker trying to convince us of something about ourselves. What does your selftalk sound like and what is it saying to you? Is it a blessing to you? Do you encourage you? Alternatively, do you curse and criticize yourself ? Become your own encourager, your own cheerleader. Every time you do a good job, do not just let it pass; give yourself a compliment. Every time you choose discipline over indulgence, encourage yourself; recognize how much you are helping you. When you make a mistake, learn from it and improve but do not beat yourself up and relive the mistake without getting the lesson. The help, boost, and acceptance you have been looking for might be found in the things you say to yourself! Speak life, especially to yourself!
