This is the first edition of your Chevron newsletter, a triannual publication which will be used to include, involve and inform you of news happening around the company and industry as a whole; from new starters, births and weddings, to new contracts won, customer feedback, Health & Safety, and anything else of interest.
As we are a national company, it’s not always easy to engage with everyone in different parts of the country. I hope that this newsletter will help this engagement and encourage us all to look beyond the depot, or office, where we work and feel part of the wider company.
Most importantly, for this newsletter to achieve its goals, it has to be interesting and relevant to you. Please feel free to let me know if there is anything you would like included in future issues.

Tough Guy!
Good luck to David Martin, Supervisor at our Leeds depot, who is taking part in yet another Tough Guy event on Sunday 25 October in Birmingham.
This gruelling half marathon obstacle course should be a walk in the park for David, who has completed several similar events, including the Tough Guy 10 mile Nettle Warrior in July and the Total Warrior Lake District 10 mile course (with a four-mile run up Shap) last month. He completed the latter in an impressive time of two hours and four minutes!

NEW VEHICLES
New IPVs
Our IPV fleet has grown this year, with the delivery of ten new vehicles since January and a further 15 due to arrive by April 2016. These vehicles will be used at various Chevron projects around the country and will bring our total TM fleet to more than 380 vehicles.
To assist with our future purchasing, a new Fleet Steering Committee has been set up. The Committee, which includes workforce representation, is responsible for reviewing new vehicle specifications and making any necessary improvements to improve their usability. They will be looking to review our 3.5 tonne fleet over the next 12 months.
CONTRACT UPDATES
We have secured the A338 Bournemouth for Hanson, which is valued at £1.7m and is due to start this September.
We have also secured the M5 Smart Motorways for Balfour Beatty and VINCI, which is valued at £1.7m and is also due to start in January. If we perform well on this contract we have a chance of securing the M4 junction 3 to junction 12.
Our client Kier WSP has had their Northamptonshire Highways contract extended to 2020.
Areas 3 and 9 for Kier Strategic Highways are ongoing until 2018 and 2019 respectively. Both contracts are extendable by a further 3 years, so it is vital that we deliver collaboratively with Kier to secure these extensions.
Area 10 continues to perform strongly with an extensive programme of schemes for the next 12 months.
Our Solutions depot have commenced work in Area 7 again for A-One Plus
We are currently tendering Area 2 for Skanska Atkins and awaiting the results of Areas 4 and 12
INNOVATION
Premier Hazards
As part of our new fleet strategy we will be installing ‘Premier Hazards’ - a full CCTV system on our new IPV’s.
This multi-camera system will allow us to view any issues the crew encounters on site, without physically being present. A full 360 degree sensor system will provide an audible and visual alert when anything is in close proximity to the vehicle.

Investing in the future
A major project designed to improve Chevron’s IT systems is about to be rolled out, following the appointment of a London-based consultancy. Access Dimensions saw off competition from four other bidders to secure the work, which will see the installation of new software to upgrade our finance, fleet and workforce management systems over the next eight months. The system will also run on mobile devices and aims to replace a lot of our paper-based systems, which will make life a lot easier for everyone!
A project team within Chevron, led by Mark Fleckner, with support from Matt Worswick, has been appointed and we’ll provide more updates as the project progresses, so watch this space!
HEALTH AND SAFETY UPDATE
H&S Representative Meeting
The latest National H&S Representative meeting took place at Finedon on 21 July. The topics discussed during the day included the rollout of the new Accident Reporting procedure, the policy regarding e-cigarettes, problems with Dorman road danger lamps, the legal and company requirement to wear seat belts (otherwise disciplinary action will be taken), in addition to many other topics from around the depots.

Drug Driving
Gavin wins Annual Safety Award 2014
Chevron’s Annual Employee Safety Award 2014 was awarded to Gavin Dymond, Supervisor (Wales). This is in recognition of the high standards of safety that Gavin demonstrated throughout the year; not least the actions taken by him during the advanced works for the MSM earlier in the year. These works were classed as Zero Carriageway Crossings, and due to unexpected conditions, Gavin had to make the call to cancel some works in the face of pressure from the client. Over the past year Gavin has continued to raise safety issues through the Observation Report process. It has also been noted on safety audits that his closures are always of the highest standard.
Recent changes to the law on the use of drugs and driving have been widely publicised in the press. However, you may not be aware that the legislation covers certain prescription and over the counter medicines, as well as illicit drugs. Seemingly innocent medications like antihistamines to treat hay fever, or anti-diarrhoeals can cause drowsiness and impact your ability to drive. So, if you have any concerns whatsoever, please speak to a member of the Chevron senior management team, or your GP.
Kim Yates commented: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Gavin and everybody who has submitted Observation Reports in 2014. Unfortunately, there can only be one winner; but we had an impressive year safety-wise and we must continue to work together to ensure it continues.“

Don’t walk by
We have just launched a depot-wide safety campaign on wearing seat belts as part of our Don’t walk by safety initiative. Recently, we had an RTC where the three Chevron guys involved were all wearing seat belts – an action which saved their lives. Our night-time yardman, Chris Sowden (Wales), was involved in a major accident back in April and was told by the police and paramedics that if he hadn’t worn a seat belt, he almost certainly would have been killed. Whilst the majority of TM crews wear seat belts, we are aware of a number of incidents where operatives have been caught by police and fined for not wearing their seat belts. Furthermore, through our own surveillance, vehicles have been found with seat belts plugged in from the previous shifts. These incidents, however rare, must be stopped as they are risking peoples’ lives.
At the end of the day, we want everyone to get home safely to their loved ones, so no matter what, please always wear a seat belt and if you see someone else not wearing theirs, don’t walk by - take action and remind them, and you could save their life.

Every year eight people are injured, which results in time off work because they are off for more than one day. The higher these figures are, the more likely we are of having a big accident, for example months off or a fatality.

Causes of accidents & incidents
The number one cause of all accidents/incidents this year has been Slips, Trips and Falls. It is no surprise given that Housekeeping is one of the highest observation categories. Take care! A clean site should be a safe site.

Monthly Safety Awards 2015
It was like an episode of One Born Every Minute for two of our operatives who were commended for their response to a TM closure breach involving a woman in labour on the A3 in East Hampshire. The night-time incident happened when the car that the woman was travelling in crashed through the roadworks and started driving towards the workforce. The swift action of Billy Clarkson and James Trayers in trying to intercept the car and clear the workforce out of harm’s way ensured the safety of everyone involved. Once James had caught up with the car and realised that that there was a female passenger in labour whose waters had broken, the guys immediately called for an ambulance and stayed with the occupants of the car. Once the ambulance arrived it was escorted through the roadworks. The paramedics then transferred the pregnant lady to hospital and the remaining occupants of the car were escorted safely out of the roadworks.
Well done to Billy and James for responding in such a professional and caring manner. For their response to this incident Billy and James were joint winners of the July H&S Award.
The winners of the H&S Award so far this year are:
January - Mark Ryall, TM Operative IPV (Highways), who responded to an IPV Strike on the A34 in a prompt and professional manner.
February - Rhys Clarke, TM Foreman (Wales), whose quick thinking ensured the safety of his colleagues and the travelling public after an RTC occurred 6km before his closure.
March – Adam Leatherbarrow, TM Operative, and Tom Knox, TM Operative (Systems), who were commended for their response and assistance to a female victim of road rage on the A577.
April – Mark Jones, TM Foreman (Wales), whose Observation Report following a night-time closure installation in Area 9 on the M5/M42 led to a site drawing redesign and the replacement of an unnecessary two lane closure with a single one.
May – Phil Tindale (Leeds), who has pioneered a safer method of cone re-sleeving, using a seat belt cutter rather than a Stanley knife.
June – Haydn Clarke, TM Operative/IPV Driver (Wales), whose calm and professional attitude and willingness to assist the emergency services ensured the safety of the travelling public after an RTA on the A449.
July – Billy Clarkson, TM Foreman, and James Trayers, TM Operative (Highways) – see main story.

Seize the moment

With the advent of zero carriageway crossings at the start of the year and the introduction of new industry working practises outlined in documentation (outlined in documentation, such as Interim Advice Notice IAN 150/14 REV 2 and IAN 181 14), the industry has never seen so much change. Coupled with the volume of work being undertaken in the Highways sector nationwide, it has certainly been a challenging start to the year. That said, with the ever improving safety standards in the TM industry and a security of workload not seen for many years, it is also an exciting time to be working at Chevron, which will bring many opportunities.
Career development
At Chevron we’ve have committed to providing all supervisors with a recognised H&S qualification through the SSSTS scheme and have secured new depot premises for both Systems & Highways depots. We are also actively encouraging all employees to talk to their supervisors about personal development and training opportunities, so whether it’s becoming the next depot IPV driver or Foreman, if you’d like a new challenge, we can help make it happen.
Safe systems of work
New safe systems of work and method statements have certainly been prevalent in the first eight months of this year. I’m pleased to say that we have already seen an excellent example of compliance with our safe systems of work, whereby several of our operatives refused to cross the carriageway despite pressure from the client to do so. They contacted their supervisor, who in turn raised the issue with the senior management team. We are now working with the client in question to ensure the situation does not occur again. We have also been notified on several occasions by our clients when we haven’t followed our own procedures correctly. To put it simply, this cannot happen and we need to learn from these events going forward.
At Chevron, not only do we want everybody to complete their shift safely and then go home safely, we want to encourage a positive working environment, where everyone can develop and enjoy their work. Traffic Management is an often undervalued, yet critical element of the Highways Industry. To make the most of the opportunities presented to us and create this environment, we need to work together and endeavour to provide the best levels of service in the industry at all times.
So, what can you do?
Make sure you understand the safe system of work for every task.
If you don’t understand a method statement, or work procedure, or if anything changes, stop and ask.
Whilst we try to minimise the amount of paperwork completed by those on the road, the paperwork you do complete, such as start of shift briefings and vehicle defect sheets, is very important. Please complete all paperwork fully and to the best of your ability.
Speak to your supervisor about possible training opportunities.
Take pride in your work and look out for others on your site.
DEPOT FOCUS: SYSTEMS
Happy, Happy, Happy!
It’s been a year in the planning, but our Systems depot has finally moved to a new site at Stake Hill Industrial Estate in Middleton. John Walls, Area Manager explains how the move came about.
When we started out four years ago with a workload of 10 wagons per day, our old Dodgson Street depot was ideal, but after years of expansion we had totally outgrown it. As you can imagine, with peak outputs of more than 150 men per day it was challenging to try and get up to 30 vehicles in and out of a depot that could hold just ten.
We began to look for a new premises last August and luckily we found the Stake Hill depot fairly quickly. The rest of the process was long and drawn out, with many challenges and it took until July this year to get the site signed off so we could move in. However, it has been worth the wait!
We now have ample room to park all of our vehicles, including subcontractors’ vehicles on the 40-bay platform. There’s a new 18,000sq ft warehouse to store all our TM equipment, cones and lamps, as well as an independent garage which holds three wagons. The workforce are now able to park their own vehicles within the secure boundary and load and unload the works vehicles without having to shunt stuff around. All our crews are
getting out of the depot within 30 minutes of arriving and without any stress or worries about being late to sites. This is making us work more efficiently and most importantly, more safely.

Systems fact file:
Size: Spread over more than 1.5 acres, Systems is the largest Traffic Management depot of its kind in the UK.
Team: 80 permanent staff and counting!
Contracts: Various, from StreetWorks (Cheshire East Highways, Ringway Jacobs) to high speed motorway major projects (M60 Manchester Smart Motorways, Highways England). Systems is also the main Traffic Management provider for BBMM’s Area 10 Asset Support Contract (ASC).
Chevron opens Thatcham depot
The Highways depot also had a busy July, which saw it relocate from Romsey to Thatcham. The new depot replaces the old and outdated buildings at the Romsey site with new smart offices and meeting rooms, as well as more space for vehicles, workshop areas and storage.

M60 Manchester Smart Motorways
Client: MSM (a JV between Balfour Beatty, Carillion, BAM/Morgan Sindall and Costain)
Dates: July 2014- Autumn 2017
Traffic Management Value: £9-10m
Scope of Works: This 17-mile stretch between junction 8 of the M60 near Sale and Junction 20 of the M62 near Rochdale will be kitted out with more than 200 new electronic signs. Once completed, the smart motorway will tackle the congestion and unpredictable journey times that users of the M60 and M62 experience daily.
The majority of the work is split into five sections (works in all sections to run concurrently) along with multiple phases. The outcome being All Lane Running from M62 junction 18 to Junction 20 and Controlled Motorway from M60 Junction 8 to junction 18. To facilitate the construction, Chevron has installed a series of narrow lane schemes and is providing six TM crews five nights per week installing lane closures/full closures/slip closures, together with a maintenance team consisting of four men days and four men nights.
Performance highlights:
Zero RIDDORS in over 150,000 man hours worked to date
Chevron TM ops continue to ensure zero carriageway crossings without having any effect on planning or programming operations
Number of night-time lane closure crews deployed to the end of July 2015 was 1219
Client Feedback:

The install of our first major TM scheme is now complete, and it’s without doubt the neatest narrow lanes scheme I have ever seen. Getting to know… Jamie Bowen
New National Business Process and SHEQ Manager, Jamie Bowen has recently joined the company from Hanson Contracting. So we thought it was the perfect opportunity to find out more about him.
So, Jamie having just joined the company, what are your first impressions?
It’s been great. Everyone has made me feel welcome and the first seven months have flown by. It feels like I’ve been working here for ages. The experience and knowledge within the company has impressed me greatly.
If you could go back in time, what piece of advice would you give your younger self?
Life is for living, make sure you enjoy it and dream big. Nothing is beyond the realms of impossible if you work hard enough for it. Your house is burning down, what three things would you save?
As long as my family were safe, it would probably be photographs of special times and people.
Favourite food?
Curry. The hotter, the better!
Favourite film?
Star Wars. That first scene where the Imperial Star Destroyer seems like its coming over the cinema just blew me away. Not all that impressed with the three prequels, but hopefully the new one later this year will be great !
Favourite music?
I like an eclectic mix of music, from Classical to Glenn Campbell and Eric Clapton to Pearl Jam.

The Usual Suspects Chevron Scoops 4th RoSPA Gold Award
The Chevron team celebrated receiving its fourth RoSPA Gold Award in a row at a prestigious awards ceremony, hosted by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents in July in Birmingham. The annual award scheme recognises continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention at work.
Through the scheme, entrants are judged on their overarching occupational health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement. The majority of RoSPA’s awards are non-competitive and grade achievement at merit, bronze, silver and gold levels.
Christopher Rowley, Group Health and Safety Manager, said: “This award reflects the continued commitment and tremendous hard work from everyone at Chevron in maintaining high standards of safety year after year.”

The secret life of a traffic cone
The Systems depot hoped to be in pole position at Red Bull’s Soap Box Derby 2015 with this homemade prototype cone racer. Unfortunately, for the four-strong Cone Rangers team, their application to enter the wacky-races style London Derby wasn’t successful. However, whilst this particular design didn’t make it past the prototype stage, we think you’re on to something team Cone Rangers. Don’t give up…maybe 2016 will be your year!
N.B. Please note no cone was hurt whilst designing this prototype. The team recycled one of our fallen soldiers, who has now finished active duty!

Bringing New People into the Industry
Chevron is working closely with Rochdale Training to recruit and train Traffic Management Operatives through their apprenticeship framework for both our streetworks and highways divisions at various locations
across the UK. The initiative offers apprentices a unique opportunity to gain nationally and professionally recognised qualifications with training. Within the past 12 months alone, we have successfully recruited over 30 new trainee TM operatives locally - all of whom were previously young, unemployed people.
We are also working with the British Forces Resettlement Services (BFRS) to recruit exArmed Forces personnel. As part of this, Chevron exhibits at regular BFRS recruitment roadshows nationwide throughout the year.
EMPLOYEE REFERRAL SCHEME
Given our ongoing success in securing long-term contracts, we have introduced an employee referral scheme aimed at encouraging new people to join the company.
The initial scheme is focussed on recruiting the roles and disciplines shown here and is open to all existing employees.
To date, we have employed more than 10 people, whilst attracting the interest of those in active service, who have signed up to join Chevron in the future.
Lastly, our newest recruitment initiative sees us working with Chance 2013 Ltd, an employment agency working exclusively with exoffenders who want to re-enter the job market. Whilst this is a relatively new aspect of our recruitment drive, it is proving very successful, having introduced several new employees around the company, with many more interviews due to take place.
