Welcome to our Autumn Term Welcome to our Autumn Term edition of our Careers newsletter for parents, carers and students. We are so happy to be back in school and to be planning a hybrid careers programme offering students a mix of in-person and virtual events. This term we are mainly focusing on Post 16 Options for Y11 and Post 18 Options for Y13. Our Career Adviser, David Ritchie is running our Y11 workshops as well as being on hand for any 1-2-1 meetings for students wishing to discuss subjects, career paths and options. We have also welcomed our new Y12 students with career workshops. We have already kick started our “Talks on Tuesday” with former CGS student, H.E. Judith Gough, British Ambassador to Sweden. Judith gave the students a really great insight into the life as a diplomat (without giving away any top secret information) answered lots of great questions and gave the students her 5 top tips. A recording of this talk is available on Canvas under “Careers Talks” which the whole school has access to. Please see our events/activities section for more talks planned this term. The Autumn is a busy time for open day events and is also the opening window for apprenticeship opportunities. This newsletter highlights just some of the events and opportunities taking place over the next couple of months. We are always looking to meet new parents and employers who are willing to help with our careers programme. Notes and follow up actions from appointments are uploaded to students’ Unifrog accounts.
Please can we remind and encourage students from Y8 upwards to log activities such as work shadowing/work experience plus any competencies & skills. It is a huge benefit to students to log this information for when they come to do their personal statements, CVs and UCAS applications.

EVENTS
Universities A vast majority of universities are now offering in person visits and open day events. Students should be encouraged to visit at least 2 higher education campuses.
UK University & Apprenticeship Search Virtual Fair is taking place next week on Wednesday 20 October from 12 - 6pm. Students, teachers and parents can register for their free place here. The event will feature a wide range of exhibitors, virtual campus tours and webinars. The event is perfectly timed to help year 13s as they apply to university, including two special webinars on How to Write Your UCAS Personal Statement and Completing Your UCAS Application, students can also speak directly with admissions experts to receive vital application advice, and find out what they look for in a candidate. The event is also a fantastic opportunity for students in year 12 as they begin to consider their next steps after school. Students can explore their options by chatting with exhibitors and participating in the Careers and Employability, Student Life at University, and Degree Apprenticeships webinars. Exhibitors will include the universities' of Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Kent, Essex, Newcastle, Queen Mary, Exeter, Aberdeen, Lancaster, Middlesex, SOAS, Manchester Met, Liverpool, Southampton, Surrey as well as the National Apprenticeships Service. You can take part in this incredible free event anytime between 12 - 6 pm and generally students spend about an hour at the fair.

Taking the route to a professional apprenticeship rather than going to University is becoming increasingly popular but can be tricky to navigate. Throughout their time at CGS, students are encouraged to gain at least 2 work place experiences by the time they leave school. All students have a “work experience module” within the careers course on Canvas.
