Pursuing the Right Preschool
inding the perfect preschool for your little one can be excruciating. I remember researching where to send my toddlers, and how stressed I was trying to find one that met my family’s needs. I had one specific thing in mind, and no nearby schools seemed to offer it. Eventually I found the right one and couldn’t be happier with the school we picked. But it’s not an easy search. You have to consider the geography, cost, and academic and disciplinary philosophies of a school, as well as whether you like the teachers, your kids like the teachers, and all sorts of other factors. The good news is: We’re here to help you through it! This month we’re all about preschools, including our directory of preschools in the area, starting on page 17. Start there to browse through preschools in Anne Arundel, Howard, Prince George's, and Queen Anne’s counties, giving you a great place to start your decisionmaking process. From there, you can head to page 11 for our feature about kindergarten readiness. We asked local teachers and preschool administrators about what kids should learn—academically, physically and socially—in preschool to prepare them for their next steps.
This will give you plenty to think about as you continue your search for the right preschool for you and your child. Finally, we’ve got the whole package for preschool families at our Anne Arundel County Preschool & Childcare Fair, coming to you on January 26 at Westfield Annapolis Mall! This year’s fair will feature more than 30 preschool exhibitors, plus healthcare providers, speakers, seminars, Mommy and Me yoga demonstrations, a Q&A session with doctors, and a whole lot more. You can read more about it on page 24 and at ChesapeakeFamily.com/ preschoolfair. We can’t wait to see you there!

Child Find Evaluates Kids Ages 3 to 5 for Developmental Delays and Disabilities
T
hree is an exciting milestone—your little one is no longer a baby and preschool is on the horizon. But what if you have concerns about whether your child is on track with his or her peers? Rachel Horak of Odenton contacted Anne Arundel County Child Find to request an evaluation for her daughter Arleigh following a routine visit with her pediatrician. “Arleigh had limited speech, but was very independent so I always assumed speech would just pick up on its own,” says Horak. “When she was still behind at two, her pediatrician recommended a speech evaluation.” Child Find diagnosed Arleigh with autism spectrum disorder. It was recommended she be placed in the Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) preschool program at Oakwood Elementary. There she received one-on-one social and speech services. Child Find services stem from the federal law called the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, which requires school districts to have a process for identifying and evaluating children who may need special education or services such as counseling, speech or occupational therapy. If a family believes their child could benefit from special education or related services they can contact Child Find to request an evaluation. The program covers every child from birth to age 21. In Anne
Arundel County, the Preschool Child Find office focuses on children ages 3 to 5. If the school system agrees that the child may have a disability, it will set up an evaluation. During this evaluation, the family will discuss concerns about their child’s development with the Child Find team, consisting of a speech/language pathologist, special educator, occupational therapist and/or physical therapist. The team will gather information in areas of concern through formal, standardized assessment, and use any information already available from prior services through the Infants and Toddlers program. Following the evaluation, there will be an Eligibility Determination Meeting which will officially determine whether or not a child meets the criteria to receive special education services. In order to be eligible for special education services when turning 3, a child must have one of 14 educational disabilities that negatively impacts his/ her ability to successfully participate in preschool level activities. These disabilities include: developmental delay; speech or language impairment; autism; hearing or visual impairment; intellectual disability; orthopedic impairment; emotional disability; or traumatic brain injury. If your child is eligible to receive special education services, a follow-up Individualized Education Program (IEP)
meeting will be scheduled to develop an appropriate program to meet your child’s specific needs. For Arleigh, the Early Childhood Intervention program was chosen to best suit her individual needs. Other children receive services at home, private preschools, Head Start programs or in childcare. The goal is for the child to receive services tailored to his or her individual needs in a natural setting and the least restrictive environment. After Arleigh finished attending the ECI preschool, she continued to receive weekly speech- and one-on-one social services. “Both specialists came to her Preschool so it was very convenient,” says Horak. Today Arleigh receives speech services from a private contractor and attends Indian Creek School, where she continues to thrive. Her mom describes her as chatty and social with a passion for learning. If you have concerns about your child’s development or feel he/she may have a disability, contact your local Child Find office to request an evaluation. Anne Arundel County residents can start their search at aacps.org/childfind. he combination of windy, cold weather outside and dry heat inside can be tough on anyone’s skin—especially kids’. Here’s how you can protect your child’s delicate skin from winter weather. Outdoors, remember to always keep your child’s skin covered, even if just making a quick trip from the house to the car, but especially for those who may be outside longer, such as bus-riders. Older babies and young children should be dressed in one more layer of clothing than an adult would wear in the same conditions. Inside, protecting your child’s skin begins with the bath routine. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, daily baths or showers are not necessary for children ages 6 to 11. While a nice warm bubble bath may seem like just the ticket for dry, itchy skin Annapolis Pediatric’s Nichole Tucker, CPNP, says less is more. “I do normally recommend spacing baths in the winter months,” says Tucker. “This will allow the body time to self lubricate! Keep baths short and sweet, you can even try switching to showers. Remember pat dry vs. rubbing and start applying lotion directly after bath.” Bath water should be tepid, not too hot, as this will only increase itchiness. At bath time, which should be limited to 10 minutes, avoid the bubbles and fragrant soaps. Opt instead for non-comedogenic soaps and lotions to prevent irritation and help with lubrication. Tucker suggests following your nose when choosing bath products, “If it smells like anything, don’t use it! Just because a label says non-fragrant does not always mean it is. I tend to avoid bubble baths as these are normally always scented.” For exacerbated skin, Tucker recommends a thin layer of 1-percent hydrocortisone cream, used sparingly, not more than twice a day for a week. The cream can be layered with Aquaphor or Vaseline. She says both of these products are excellent for chapped lips, too. Any areas of skin that show increased redness, warmth, tenderness, pain or discharge should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. “As always, if you are not sure about a rash or how best to manage,” Tucker says, “it is always a good idea to check in with your pediatrician.” —Joyce Heid

JANUARY 2019
family fun
By Claire Dougherty Kovacs
THERE’S MORE THAN ONE WAY TO HIT THE SLOPES! Area ski resorts offer a lot more than skiing and snowboarding these days .
I
have a confession: I have never taken my kids skiing. Why? I’m not very good at it. When balancing on a slippery, snowy slope I fear my only path to the bottom will play out like a cartoon character plowing down the mountain in a giant snowball with only my arms and legs sticking out. So, you can imagine my excitement when I discovered that ski resorts, many just a few hours away from the Baltimore/D.C. area, offer a lot more than skiing and snowboarding. Resorts these days have snow tubing and zip lines, and others that take you horseback riding or have a deluxe spa for a day of pampering. There are ski resorts with mountain coasters, escape rooms, golf courses, and even an indoor water park. Many of the resorts offer hotel accommodations on site or have partnered with nearby hotels for lodging and all have a variety of food and dining options. With so many family-friendly activities available, I think I’ll revisit my view on what it means to ‘hit the slopes!’
Roundtop Mountain Resort Lewisberry, Pa. skiroundtop.com Roundtop Mountain Resort has 14 large tubing lanes for ages 5 and up, as well as a special Kiddie Tubing area for kids 4 and under. Roundtop also features a year-round outdoor paintball course that is the largest paintball field in Central Pa., and kids as young as 7 can play! If you have a group of 12 people or more, Roundtop has a challenging set of ropes courses perfect for team building activities.
Liberty Mountain Resort at Boulder Ridge Carroll Valley, Pa. libertymountainresort.com Winter highlights at Liberty include a 15-lane snow tubing course, complete with a ‘moving carpet’ that brings you and your tube back to the hill to Boulder Ridge Lodge. The lodge is the perfect place to warm-up, featuring party rooms, a snack bar, arcade, and a wrap-around deck to “watch the action on the hill.” Large groups can book Liberty’s Challenge Course, which has ropes courses, and a climbing wall great for teamwork exercises. Liberty also features an ice-skating rink at its main location; shuttle buses run between Liberty and Boulder Ridge regularly.

Whitetail Resort
Wisp Resort
Mercersburg, Pa. skiwhitetail.com Whitetail’s Kid’s Mountain Camp is perfect for your littler skier or snowboarder to have fun and gain the skills they need to master the slopes. After their camp session has ended, head over to the 16-lane snow tube course and slide your way down the mountain over and over again. Snow Tubing party options are available for celebrating any special occasion!
McHenry, Md. wispresort.com At Wisp, you can whiz down the mountain on the Mountain Coaster and roll, dip, twist and turn in a coaster cart, regulating your own speed on this downhill roller coaster. Or, slide your way down the mountain on their 12 lanes of snow tubing. Prefer to see the sights of the mountain without high speeds? Strap on some snowshoes and hike the surrounding trails.
Camelback Resort
Canaan Valley Resort
Tannersville, Pa. camelbackresort.com Camelback Mountain has 42 snow tubing lanes, making it the biggest snow-tubing park in the U.S. The park is also equipped for Galactic nighttime snow tubing! Don’t forget to pack your bathing suit in addition to your snowsuit so you can play and swim at Aquatopia indoor water park in warm 84-degree water and have fun in the snow and the sun.
Davis, W.Va. canaanresort.com Canaan Valley Resort is approximately 2.5 hours from Washington, D.C. A West Virginia State Park and companion resort, it offers winter slopes activities as well as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. There are nearly 20 miles of marked and un-groomed trails to enjoy in addition to skiing, snowboarding, tubing and ice skating.
