W
hen my oldest daughter was a toddler, I remember looking for fun events to take her to. Most of what I found were library story times, nature exploration events and kids concerts. All of these were great, of course. But now, just a few short years later, the spectrum of cool events for kids has widened to include so much more STEAM events, and I couldn’t be happier. Now we’re teaching kids that they can make, design and build just about anything. They’re learning to take things apart and put them back together with confidence and build their skills on the scientific process. I have to admit, I’m often envious of the programs out there for kids. Which is why our Family Fun column this month (page 24) is all about places you can go with your kids and do fun STEAM projects together! I was delighted at how many places nowadays have Family STEM nights and workshops. Most recently, my family headed to the Chesapeake Arts Center in Brooklyn Park to make our own drawing robots (pictured above), and even though it was
really for kids, we had a great time as a family working on them. Also along the lines of adults having fun, you’ll note our Stay Inspired column (page 32) is all about places where grown-ups get to play! Kids may have their bouncy house gyms, but we adults now have Ninja Warrior gyms, ropes courses and race tracks! So read on, and plan your date nights now, folks. As you start your family’s school year, we hope you’ll find plenty of STEAM related fun you can do together, and that you’ll join us at Chesapeake Family Life’s STEAM Fair on September 29. You can read all about it on page 22, and we hope to see you there!

Baltimore Comic-Con
very fall thousands of fans flood the Baltimore streets in fandom tees or full cosplay costumes, repping their nerdiness en route to Comic-Con at the Baltimore Convention Center. Baltimore Comic-Con is a celebration of all things pop and geek culture. Comic-Con draws out all types of fans—whether you're fangirling or fanboying over superheroes, wizards, spaceships, or zombies, they're all being celebrated in one place by adoring fans from around the area. Navigating High School Volunteer Requirements
A
s high schoolers get back into the swing of the new school year, they’ll need to fulfill duties both inside and outside of the classroom. With service hours required for high school graduations across the state, now’s the time to make sure your kids plan their volunteer efforts for the year. The Maryland State Board of Education requires every public high school student to complete at least 75 service hours to graduate. In Anne Arundel County (AACPS), service hours are completed through classroom initiatives between fifth and twelfth grades. The curriculum begins in fifth grade with five hours, then continues with ten hours per year in middle school and high school. Each project is divided into threesteps: Preparation, Action, and Reflection. Preparation involves researching a need within the community and receiving any necessary training to complete the project. Action is taking the information or training learned and applying to the community directly, indirectly, or through advocacy. Finally, the students reflect on their service and the significant impact their actions have on the community. Students can earn additional service hours through service clubs, guidance activities, IB programs, as well as independent service projects.
Completing outside service projects can increase a student’s college acceptance chances as well as entrance into National Honors Society and other service-oriented clubs. To help parents, the AACPS system released the Implementation Plan for 2017–2020, which highlights effects and importance of service in schools, at aacps.org/page/2304. Similarly, the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) requires the minimum 75 service hours as part of its instruction. However, these hours may be completed during the middle school grades with students performing 25 hours each year. For those who haven’t completed their hours by high school, students in Grades 10 through 12 can complete their hours through completing service-oriented courses such as Special Education Peer Assistant/Tutor Course, Leadership Community Service II, Leadership I/II, or Student Services Office or Assistant. Students may also participate in an independent service project or Student Service Learning activities (SSL). Guided by a high school instructor, the project must meet the minimum 75 hours and be approved by the school to fulfill the graduation requirements. This form of service is open to all middle and high grades. For more information, visit
the HCPSS website, hcpss.org/academics/ service-learning. Private school service hour requirements differ by school. However, students perform the same types of service activities. For example, the students at Archbishop Spalding need 60 hours over a four-year period to graduate. The school requires students to complete 25 of those 60 hours at outreach volunteer facilities such as Sarah’s House or the Light House Shelter. At Severn School, graduation requirements include 10 hours a year, where no more than two may be done at the school itself, and the rest must be direct service. Serving one’s community opens a wide range of networks as well as positive outcomes such as scholarships and grants to those who dedicate themselves to helping others. Every year, high schools recognize the seniors who exemplified outstanding service in the community. Those who exhibited and performed excellent service are nominated by their schools for the Maryland State Department of Education Service Star Awards. We are going to encourage him in a variety of interests so he can find out what he likes.
AT: Easton needs to be a kid; you don’t want your kids to be burned out. If he has an interest in something that is completely different than what we do, we will encourage him.
What do you think about kids focusing on one sport at an early age?

AT: Easton loves it when Justin brings out the guitar and sings to him. We are definitely trying to pass that on to him.
You talk a lot about being well rounded. Why do you think this is important? JT: I can’t tell you how many guys on our team have a wide array of interests; it goes beyond
topic. So many of the professional athletes playing

Gallegos says it’s fairly common for people to not know their family histories. For Michelle’s family, the news of her kids (and likely her husband, he hasn’t been tested yet) having FVL was concerning at first, but she’s glad they know and are tackling the prognosis one step at a time. Recently Taylor, her oldest, had a consultation to get her wisdom teeth out. “We told the doctor and he recommended we check with our hematologist first to see if there were any precautions needed,” she says. “But her hematologist actually wanted the blood to clot in her mouth, and since it wasn’t a major surgery, no precautions were needed.” It’s reassuring, she says, to have that backup, and to know that they have a specialist who understands the condition best.

We will follow the steps of our Challenge Island Totem Pole to design and build rockets, then test out designs using the force of air pressure for the launch our rockets!
Budding engineers will learn about 3D printing and computer modeling and even try their hand with a simple modeling program to design and take home a cookie cutter! In addition, children can attack an aerodynamics challenge using wind power. They will design and build their own wind turbine and then test it in a wind tunnel to see how much weight it can actually lift.
Hands-on activities for all ages celebrate fall! Explore symmetry, patterns in nature (big and small!), and the importance of plants with a sensory table, microscope, and leaf art! cience, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) programs are all the rage these days. Our kids are learning to code video games, build robots and design the technology of the future. Schools are integrating STEAM components into curricula at a rapid pace and at
earlier ages all the time. Outside of school kids are encouraged to participate in after-
school enrichment programs, drop-in STEAM play events, and clubs and camps. From 3D printing at the library to robot-builds at local museums and play places, kids can build their technology skills just about anywhere. But why should the kids have all the fun?
