Recently during a speech, I praised the Black Press: “As the Black Press celebrates 195 years, I thank the National Newspaper Publishers Association for continuing to be that VOICE, even when those we are speaking for sometimes don’t realize that all ice is 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Some thought that was a powerful statement because in essence, I was saying that no one else’s ice is colder. Which brings me to my truth. Everyone has a story to tell and one day I was multitasking and watching a movie. White Water is the story of a 7-year-old Black child in segregated 1963 Opelika, AL, who becomes obsessed with the desire to taste the water from the "white's only" drinking fountain and sets out on a quest to do the unthinkable: drink from it. A child can get into trouble because of their inquisitive nature and young Michael does exactly that. His curiosity almost ended up with him becoming another statistic as he faced members of the Ku Klux Klan, in and out of police uniforms. Woman says teens stole her car before crashing into South Dallas pizzeria By Cheryl Smith A stolen car crashed into a South Dallas pizza restaurant Monday, leaving several injured, a business in turmoil and a young mother without transportation. For two women, it was a day they would not soon forget. Dorothy Jones, owner of the popular Black Jack Pizza, was enjoying herself on Monday morning, doing the things she usually does on her day off when she got the call. Across town Taylor Hunter, a young, struggling mother of two, was finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. She was happy because she finally had a home for her family and on Tuesday she was set to start a job that was paying well over

the Texas minimum wage. She also had a new car, which she was using Monday to transport her children to
doctor’s appointments. That is until two young men hopped into her car and sped off, she said.

Deciding when to take Social Security is a huge issue, and a very complicated one. A wrong decision can cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars over your lifetime. That decision can be critically important for African Americans. You need a plan for retirement that includes at least some savings other than Social Security. First, a couple of facts. • Three quarters of minority beneficiaries rely on Social Security for at least half of their retirement income. That’s true for only half of whites. • 45 percent of African Americans relied on Social Security for 90 percent of their income compared to only 29 percent of whites.
