These are just a few of the many adjectives one could use to describe Dallas Mavericks CEO Cynthia Marshall. Marshall, better known as Cynt Marshall, is all of these, for sure. But to many in the NBA world, MFFL’s and the immediate Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex she’s much more. She’s arguably the woman who saved the Dallas Mavericks franchise. “She just great. If I had known her sooner, my life would have been a lot easier,” said Mavs owner Mark Cuban. Marshall was hired by Cuban in

Many of the tools available today were not a reality in the neighborhoods I grew up in. In order to build healthier families and communities, it is important that we begin teaching financial literacy at a younger age. When you look at schools like Dallas’ St. Philips School and Community Center -- you can’t help but marvel at the opportunities that young people are getting -- to learn not only about opening and managing a bank account, saving for the future, and being responsible consumers; but they also learn about entrepreneurship. I’ve seen firsthand how not being equipped with the necessary skills can lead a person down a long path that takes them years to rebound from and get their life and credit score in order. Which brings me to my truth.

D.L. Hughley truly did “bring it” this past weekend at the Addison Improv and he brought four more of the funniest men on the planet with him. It was non-stop, wall to wall, head-shaking, hands in the air, gut-busting laughter in the house from the moment the first “warm-up” comedian stepped onto the stage until Hughley stepped off. The set started off with Aziz Ansari, who tag-teamed with Clint Cooley, Jay Phillips and then Bo Dacious as they each took turns priming up the audience’s funny bone to receive the incomparable, sharp-humored Hughley. Hughley’s smooth, comedic style and relevant material seemed flawlessly unscripted and was delivered with relatable honesty and perfection. We Shall Protect Your Healthcare

This time it comes from a federal judge in North Texas who ruled recently that the law was unconstitutional. Fortunately, the judge’s ruling will be appealed to a higher court where I hope and pray more prudent thinking will prevail. If the judge’s ruling stands, more than 20 million men, women and children will find themselves without health insurance, which should be considered a fundamental right in our country. As soon as I received notice of the judge’s ruling, I was in contact with my colleagues in Washington, members of the Democratic Party, who will make up the majority in the House of Representatives that will be seated during the first week of January.

One of the reasons that our party experienced such an overwhelming victory in the November congressional elections is we made healthcare a major issue, telling voters that we would protect the Affordable Care Act, and make improvements to it. The local judge’s ruling comes in the face of a decision by the United States Supreme Court that the law, signed by President Obama in 2010, was constitutional and national polls showing that the favorability of the Affordable Care Act continues to rise. Even Republican legislators promised voters that they supported the law during the election. A poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation concluded that more than 70

percent of Americans, Democrats and Republicans, have a favorable opinion of the Affordable Care Act, demonstrating that the legislation had become a significant part of the American fabric. The Affordable Care Act also allows for Medicaid expansion, providing additional people with healthcare. The holiday season can be a very stressful time for everyone. Those secure with the knowledge of having healthcare because of the Affordable Care Act do not deserve the extra worry that the judge’s ruling has created. Now that the midterm elections are over, and Democrats are savoring their victory, more than a dozen Democrats say they are considering running for President in 2020. The Democratic Party needs to get its act together if any of them has even a prayer of beating the

clown that white conservatives love to love. The fact that Republicans stole an election from Stacey Abrams in Georgia suggests that our electoral infrastructure isnâ€™t what it ought to be. The fact that Republicans in Michigan, Wisconsin, and

North Carolina are attempting to change electoral rules suggests that the Party and civil society organizations need to spend some money ensuring fair elections. From where I sit, the focus on personalities is poorly placed. We ought

to, instead, think both about our election mechanics and an economic agenda to empower the majority of our citizens who live in an economically precarious situation. Too many of us struggle to survive on the minimum wage, and too many unions have seen their influence erode in the face of hostile legislation. Too many do not have access to health care. In the summer of 1975, Dr. Joseph A. Lavizzo, Jr., the principal at Bryn Mawr Elementary School in South Shore at the time, wrote a letter to this newspaper. In it, he defended his school from a vitriolic opinion piece that had been published a week earlier, which referred to Bryn Mawr as a “run-down slum” governed by a “ghetto mentality.” Dr. Lavizzo fought back forcefully, calling the charges “an outrageous lie, which seems designed to incite only feelings of failure and flight.” At the time, I was going into seventh grade. Bryn Mawr was my school, and Dr. Lavizzo was my principal. I didn’t know that the letter had been published, but by then I’d already begun to recognize what was happening in my neighborhood. In kindergarten, my classroom had been wonderfully diverse, full of children of varying ethnic and economic backgrounds—Black and White, Hispanic and Asian, most of us middle-class, though some families landed on either side of that description. In the span of just a few years, though, most of the better-off families left our neighborhood for the suburbs, and by fifth grade, almost every student in my class was Black. As “White flight” took off, prospects in South Shore fell. Observers began throwing around words like “ghetto” to describe our neighborhood. My mother would tell me years later

The rest of the world just didn’t get to see that very often. And that’s why I’m writing to all of you—because all of that is still true of

Open Letter from Michelle Obama that all the while, predatory real estate agents were never far, whispering to home owners that they should sell before it was too late. The future was coming, they’d say, and it didn’t look good. Dr. Lavizzo certainly saw all of that, too. In his letter, it’s clear he understood that he was up against something much larger than an unfair opinion piece—he was up against the idea of failure itself. As I write in my memoir, Becoming, failure is a feeling long before it is an actual result. It’s vulnerability that breeds with self-doubt and then is escalated, often deliberately, by fear. That’s what Dr. Lavizzo and so many others in our community fought back against. It’s why teachers stayed up late grading papers and summer-camp organizers dedicated themselves to kids all across South Shore. And it’s why my parents invested themselves so deeply into my older brother Craig and me. My mother became one of the most active members of the PTA at Bryn Mawr, raising money for new equipment, throwing teacher-appreciation dinners, and lobbying for classes and strategies that would better serve the neighborhood’s children. All of those people shaped me, every single one of them. Today, when someone compliments my mother on the successes of her children (my brother is an executive in professional basketball), she just chuckles and replies that neither of us was any-

But too often, Democrats have gone with the status quo instead of looking at the changing needs of our nation. dates who sometimes upset the status quo. Now, former Vice President Joe Biden says he is the most qualified person to be President. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren took a blood test to prove that she is 1/1024 Native American, falling for 45’s BS. New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, also known as Spartacus, is considering the race, as is the incandescently intelligent California Senator Kamala Harris. There are another couple of dozen potential candidates, from the very well known to the lesser known. Democrats run the risk of having a Republican-style circus

the South Side today. It’s true of all of Chicago’s neighborhoods. I just want to make sure you all see it, too. I know that many of you are up against more than my family ever had to deal with. I know that every day can feel like a struggle and it can be harder for families to get ahead. I know that gangs rule too many streets, that guns and drugs have infested too many neighborhoods, and that too many peo-

ple who’ve never lived here or even visited find it too easy to just write off parts of this city. But what I also know is that at its heart, the South Side is still the same place that shaped me. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. As First Lady, I saw it in the students at Harper High School in West Englewood, where, in the year before I visited, 29 students and recent graduates had been shot, 8 of them fatally. The kids I spoke to were shouldering far more than I’d ever experienced growing up—far more than any kid should ever have to carry. Those kids had every reason to give up. But what they showed me wasn’t despondency, it was resilience. It was hope. Those students were just as smart and hardworking as my daughters or any other teenager in America, and beyond that, they had a hard-won grit that their peers couldn’t compete with. I’ve seen that same resilience in mothers like Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton, who raised a daughter named Hadiya, a beautiful young girl who could have been me four decades earlier. Cleopatra had done everything right, signing up her daughter for volleyball, cheerleading, and a dance ministry at church. Hadiya was a bright light, but as you all know, she was taken from us far too soon in yet another senseless shooting. In the years since her death, however, Cleopatra has transformed her grief

into advocacy for gun-violence prevention. She’s fighting not just for her own child but for everyone’s. That is exactly the spirit that surrounded me as a child. It’s what compelled Dr. Lavizzo to pen that letter to the editor. It’s what drove my mother to attend all those PTA meetings. It’s what motivated the teachers who taught me and the neighbors who looked out for me. None of them could have known that a kid from South Shore would grow up to become First Lady of the United States—but they fought like it anyway. Today, Bryn Mawr has been repurposed as Bouchet Math and Science Academy. Many of the South Shore stores and gas stations I knew as a child are gone or they’ve changed owners. But all the love that was poured into me? That’s still there. I know it is. And that’s why I can’t wait to see the good that comes out of the neighborhoods all across Chicago in the years ahead. I can’t wait to see what’s next for all the young people growing up today, walking the same sidewalks and sitting in the same classrooms as I once did. There’s no telling who they might become.

Nobody will miss Michael Avenatti since many of us did not know why he was in the race in the first place, but former Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick, who has just announced that he will not run, might have brought gravitas to the primaries. Patrick told Obama advisor David Axelrod that “It’s hard to see how you even get noticed in such a big, broad field without being shrill, sensational or a celebrity, and I’m none of those things.” Our current President is shrill, sensational and a celebrity in his own mind. Democrats should not attempt to replicate that level of insanity that

45 brings to the table. The issue, also, should not be one of who is the most sensational, but who has the most focused program, and the basis of the Democratic program must be economic justice for working Americans. Back in the day, we used to say, “It’s not the man, it’s the plan.” In gender-neutral terms, it’s not the person, it’s the program. For Democrats to build on the momentum of the midterm election, they must drill down on communicating dynamic economic programs. I’m encouraged by folks like LaTosha Brown and Black Voters Matter. They are doing ground up, not top down, organizing, going into communities and focusing on the races they deem essential, which are not always national

or statewide races. When people come out for a key local, they will also vote in the “big” races. But too often the Democratic Party focuses only on the biggest elections, with an agenda people can’t necessarily identify with. Democratic Party leaders need to sit down with Black Voters Matter as soon as they can and learn how to connect with the voters who can make a difference in 2020. Or, they can continue with business as usual and experience the consequences.

Angelic voices of the Blue Notes lift spirits this holiday season

Police at Parkland unite patients, visitors, staff through song It’s shift change at the Dallas County Hospital District Police Department. Officers are giving reports, completing paperwork and heading to their assigned posts. Down the hall the sound of a choir of angelic voices wafts from behind closed doors in roll call. Wait! What? You heard right. The 17 men and women of the DCHD Police Blue Notes choir are rehearsing for upcoming performances in conjunction with chaplains from the Parkland Health & Hospital System Pastoral Care Department. Comprised of lieutenants, police and public service officers, a dispatcher, detective, clerical staff and a driver, the Blue Notes is the brainchild of Lt. Anetta Linson, a 14-year veteran of the DCHD Police Department. “One day I was thinking about the way the nation is heading and asked myself, ‘what is it that brings everyone together?’” Lt. Linson said. “It was simple: food, togetherness and music.” And the rest they say is beautiful music.

Well, sort of. As word spread through the ranks that the police department was forming a choir, Lt. Linson was busy singing the virtues of the effort and began actively “recruiting” members. “I’ve been told it was hard to say no to me,” she said, her ever present smile beaming. Once Upon A Deadpool

What do you get when you edit out the most vulgar scenes from the movie Deadpool 2, one of the biggest R-rated moneymakers of all time? You get a PG-13, watered down, version of the film that teenagers can finally watch on the big screen. While it is not as over the top raunchy as the original movie, Once Upon A Deadpool still leaves the good stuff in it which makes it hilariously funny. In Once Upon A Deadpool, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) kidnaps Fred Savage and forces him to listen to a bedtime story of Deadpool 2. The movie does a great job of knocking down the “3rd wall” and talks directly to the audience. It’s also filled with puns and pokes fun at itself through-

out the movie. Even if you’ve seen Deadpool 2, Once Upon A Deadpool is worth seeing again. Also, the movie has a limited run, through Christmas Eve, where $1 from every ticket sold will go to cancer research.
