IN another dramatic U-turn from the UK Government, the previously cancelled May local elections have been revived just three days before Reform UK were due to challenge the decision in the High Court. The announcement means voters in 30 councils across the country, including Cheltenham, will now go to the polls as originally planned. Ministers had moved to cancel the
elections earlier this year, prompting fierce criticism from opposition parties and campaigners who argued the decision undermined democratic accountability. Leader of the Council Rowena Hay spoke to the Cheltenham Post, she said: “All 40 councillors in Cheltenham were elected in May 2024 following a mandatory boundary review. Every councillor stood in that
election knowing they could serve a four-year term. “We had no idea during our boundary review process just before 2024 that Labour were planning to scrap and reorganise councils. They’d not talked about it or put it in their election manifesto so we agreed to continue electing the chamber in halves following the all-out boundary review.” Continued on page 3
