CAVENDISH House, one of Cheltenham’s most prominent and historic buildings, will close completely at the end of this month, drawing a line under more than two centuries of continuous commercial use in the heart of the town. The closure of the building on The Promenade marks a significant moment for Cheltenham, ending its most recent chapter as a home for independent traders and pop-up businesses, and leaving unanswered questions about what will come next for one of the town centre’s most recognisable sites. For generations, Cavendish House has been a focal point of Cheltenham life. Dating back to the early 19th century, the building became synonymous with department store shopping, and for more than 50 years was occupied by House of Fraser. Its
closure as a department store in 2024 was seen by many as symbolic of the wider struggles facing traditional high-street retail. However, the building did not immediately fall silent. Instead, it reopened as a temporary retail hub, offering space to independent traders, creatives and small businesses. Supporters saw the move as a rare opportunity to inject local character into a prime town-centre location and provide a stepping stone for start-up

businesses unable to afford permanent high-street rents. That experiment will now come to an abrupt end. Traders currently operating inside Cavendish House have been told they must vacate the building before the end of the month, as the owner prepares for works to begin. Many have described the short notice as problematic, particularly after months of uncertainty about the building’s future. Continued on page 3
