Sponsorship Opportunities
Welcome Cheltenham’s Festival Expertise Cheltenham Festivals produce four of the most exciting Festivals in the country, each one having earned a place as an international leader in its field. Our Festival year opens over the first May Bank Holiday weekend when the whole town comes alive to the rhythms and tones of the Jazz world. In early June, the saxophones are replaced by such things as electrons, genes, climate engineering and the G-force as scientists move Cheltenham. Whatever the topic, our events are inspiring, offering a unique combination of discussion, discovery and entertainment. A month later, classical Music takes centre stage and the Town Hall is filled with the splendour of a full orchestra whose great sound can only be produced through precise teamwork of all the players. For 16 glorious days, musicians display their virtuoso skills in some of the town’s most beautiful buildings. Our Festival season closes in style with some 500 authors, politicians, historians and commentators joining us for the ten-day Literature Festival in October just as Cheltenham’s other famous activity, horse-racing, gets underway for the winter season. Arts festival organiser, Rob da Bank, commented in the Guardian recently that in most industries, the idea of spending the whole year working to put on an event for just five or ten days would be regarded as insane. I am not sure if, by putting on four Festivals, we are more or less mad, but such is the force of a Cheltenham Festival that its effect is felt by audiences and participants far beyond the time when the last marquee is removed from the garden behind the Town Hall. A Cheltenham Festival is unique and its special and lasting impact is the result of many people’s contribution to the final product. Our networks of formal and informal supporters are one of Cheltenham’s important features and one that helps to maintain the Festival “buzz” during and beyond the Festival. For the Science Festival, particular thanks go to our Festival Chair, Dr Gill Samuels, CBE; Directors, Professor Kathy Sykes and Dr Mark Lythgoe; all members of our Advisory Group and the very many partners and sponsors of the Festival without whom the Festival would not be possible.

1) Introduction "Cheltenham Science Festival is truly influential. It is an icon in Britain and highly regarded by the senior echelons of science. There is nothing else like it in the world and it is now central to the cultural life of Britain… It is, I promise you, of genuine national significance. Unquestionably the leading science festival in the country…” Professor Lord Winston, June 2008
Pfizer’s ‘talking’ robot, Oscar, being interviewed by local radio and school pupils
“Cheltenham Science Festival, in a few years, has probably achieved the status of Europe's leading science festival, attracting young and old alike.” Sir David King, June 2008 Cheltenham Science Festival is a five day celebration of science, engineering and the arts, with a reputation for getting the best brains in the country together to probe the most topical issues. It offers the general public a rare opportunity to explore ideas that make the world go round; debate the hottest issues; interact with the latest research and ideas; and put their questions to some of the world’s leading thinkers and personalities. It is now widely acclaimed as the UK’s, or indeed Europe’s, leading science festival and through our efforts to broaden the programme and raise our national profile, this year attracted a record 20% increase in visitors (to over 30,000 visits) and a 30% increase in the number of bookers. In total, we sold an incredible 19,000 tickets. Our audiences left the Festival inspired and keen to participate in similar events in the future, with 95% telling us they learnt something from each of the events they attended. We once again had a diverse programme of outstanding speakers, all pre-eminent in their fields. Lord Rees, Lord Winston, Richard Hammond, Jonathon Porritt, Steven Pinker, Lucy Hawking and Richard Dawkins were just some of the exceptional talent attracted to Cheltenham Science Festival in 2008. With limited core funding, our on-going partnerships with over thirty sponsors and supporters play a vital role in enabling us to deliver this world class event. Put simply, the Festival would not exist without them. In developing corporate partnerships, our responsibility is to provide high quality, tangible benefits and the opportunity for your company or organisation to attach its brand to a science communication programme of unrivalled quality and excitement. Together the Festival and its partners have the potential to make a real difference to the public’s awareness of science and technology. We look forward to welcoming you to Cheltenham in 2009.

4) Programme 2009 Festival style For the past seven years, across five days in June, Cheltenham Science Festival has transformed the town into a hub of activity.
Steven Pinker and Colin Blackemore discuss IQ and intelligence at Cheltenham Science Festival 2008
The first science festival in the world to combine accessibility and entertainment with the complexities of real scientific research, we are constantly building upon our strengths to develop the programme, the range of audiences and speakers, and the public’s awareness of science and its wider implications. Our emphasis in all events is on audience participation, with at least 1/3rd of the event allocated to Q&A between speakers and the audience. From tackling climate change to the science of cocktails, from the ethics of stem cell research to the history of the vibrator, we are always attracting new audiences and speakers, and challenging the stereotype of what a science festival can, and should, offer.
Previous speakers include:
David Cameron
Richard Branson
Robert Winston
Susan Greenfield
Richard Hammond
Tony Robinson
Adam Hart-Davies
Alice Roberts
Melvin Bragg
Jonathan Porritt
Richard Dawkins

Themes and programme ideas 2009 The programme for 2009 is now starting to take shape. Featuring a variety of formats, you can expect cutting edge debate and passionate speakers; take part in audience questions and heated discussions; be entertained by high profile speakers and brilliant comedians; get involved in hands-on workshops and interactive activities; inspire your family with our fun days and festival fringe; and involve your children in our brilliant midweek schools and weekend family programmes. Whilst programming is always impartial and driven by the Festival team, we are always keen to work with our partners to discuss new ideas, hear your thoughts on the events and speakers, and work with you to ensure the programme ties up as closely as possible with your objectives. Here is just a flavour of the huge range of ideas and themes currently being developed: Robert Winston chairing a Wellcome Trust-supported debate in 2008.
Nature & the environment As the inevitability of climate change hits home, we will debate some of the unexpected consequences which are starting to emerge – from the development of brilliant new technology to the possible effects on the world’s poorest people – and how we might go about managing them. We will be joined by polar explorers to find out what climate change looks like ‘on the ground’ and what they have learnt from their expeditions and research. With business, policy-makers and scientists, we will be looking at food security and hydropolitics across the globe, debating the role of GM crops in feeding an ever-growing population and exploring the problems of managing clean water supplies across boundaries. And we will be addressing the energy debate by looking at a range of future options, exploring the pros and cons of each and asking, when energy and the environment are such crucial issues, is NIMBY-ism still a force that policy-makers should reckon with? Space, astronomy & physics We will celebrate the International Year of Astronomy with a history of astronomy and will be looking at the science and engineering behind the Apollo missions to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the moon landings. We will also be introducing audiences to the latest research in particle physics and cosmology, from the Hubble and James Webb For more details, contact Hollie Smith in the Cheltenham Festivals Sponsorship office T 01242 775860 F 01242 573902 E hollie.smith@cheltenhamfestivals.com Details are correct at time of going to press. telescopes looking into space to the Large Hadron Collider on earth, and asking just how close we are to understanding the origins of our universe. And we will be looking at the media furore behind the switchon of the LHC and asking whether black holes are a scare story or a scientific reality. Health & biology
Andrea Sella leading a schools’ chemistry demo at Cheltenham Science Festival 2008
We will be looking at surgery and the nature of healing in 21st century Britain, exploring the unusual combination of blunders, brilliance, arrogance, mishap and murder which have shaped this profession. We will debate the role of robotics in modern medicine, the ethical issues and risks taken by pioneering surgeons and the future of surgery – from face transplants to deep brain stimulation – and ask how this might improve the patient experience. And we’ll be giving audiences the chance to try their hand at surgery, with dissection workshops and outdoor ‘living’ anatomy demos. We will be exploring contemporary research and the latest issues in global health, from malaria and HIV to the burgeoning obesity epidemic. And we will be looking at the spread of disease, such as bird flu and SARS, to debate whether modern life – from travel to conflict – makes a pandemic inevitable. We will be delving into the murky depths of the teenage brain, debating the causes and consequences of the rise in adolescent conditions, such as ADHD, and the long term effects of recreational drug use. Psychology From Buddhism, meditation and the science of consciousness to sex, chocolate and the psychology of pleasure, we will be looking at a wide range of topics around how our minds work. We will be exploring the nature of human endeavour to ask, what makes people do extreme activities for no obvious merit, other than self-satisfaction? And from polar exploration to free diving, what motivates us endlessly to try and break records? We will also be probing the psychology of consumer choice to find out, how do people choose what they buy and how do companies influence these decisions? Technology & engineering We will be discussing a huge variety of engineering topics, from the history of technology in ancient Egypt to the future of climate engineering, and how investment in ‘green’ innovations may be hampered by the economic squeeze. We will be showcasing the latest gadgets and cars and going behind the scenes of the UK’s

inspirational, daredevil attempt to break the world land speed record with the engineers from Bloodhound SSC. Good times For this strand of events, we will actively target university students and young adults who don’t normally engage with science communication activities.
The Discover Zone
We will discover the secrets of a perfect pint, with the science of beer and our own special Festival Ale, and explore the science and food psychology of the perfect curry. For a special club night, we will scratch and mix our way through the skill and science of DJing and we will be looking at how our brains cope with performance and improvising – in freestyle rap, jazz and stand-up comedy. There will be lots of cabaret and comedy, building on our 2008 pilot event, Not Rocket Science, plus the Poetry Slam, Call My Scientific Bluff and more. Schools and family events Our inspiring educational programme will feature thirty events and workshops for school groups, twenty weekend events for family groups and, of course, the brilliant hands-on Discover Zone and free Family Fun Days. From building your own power station to designing a lunar rover, from medieval medicine to the genius of Darwin, there will be a huge range of events and activities featuring the very best science communicators and tying in with the National Curriculum.

5) Sponsorship opportunities Associate your organisation with a worldclass festival
Cheltenham Town Hall – the grand entrance to the Science Festival
As a partner of the organisation, you will, through the Science Festival and its sister festivals (Literature, Jazz and classical Music), have an association with one of the most exciting and active cultural organisations in the country. Sponsorship packages are available from £3k upwards and we will work closely with you to deliver a range of benefits flexible enough to suit your company’s or organisation’s objectives. There are many types of partnership opportunities and sponsorship packages, and a range of benefits on offer depending on the level of sponsorship you choose. The lists below provide a broad outline of the activities on offer, but are intended only as a starting point for further discussion. We would be delighted to discuss these and any other options in more detail with you.
Sponsorship packages An event or series of events From supporting one event which complements your field of expertise, to sponsoring a series of several events throughout the Festival, this is a great way to support our work, inspire your target audience and ensure you have a presence throughout the lead up to and during the Festival. As the programme takes shape, you can choose which events to support and at the higher levels of sponsorship, we are able to spend time with you discussing ideas and co-programming events. Benefits here include tickets, branding, literature distribution to audiences and the opportunity for you or your clients to meet speakers and introduce events. Talking Points A new idea piloted in 2008, the Talking Point is a free, outdoor area used to continue discussions between speakers and the audience after our most contentious or lively events. We are seeking an ‘Official Talking Point sponsor’ to support this public dialogue in 2009. It offers an excellent way to support broad, open engagement, across a range of topics and audiences, and offers branding and profile throughout the Festival.

Discover Zone At the heart of the Festival, the Discover Zone is a free interactive exhibition, based in the magnificent Town Hall auditorium, which encourages visitors of all ages to learn by having a go themselves. Over 150 scientists, engineers and artists come from industry and universities to share their work and enthusiasm through innovative hands-on displays and activities, and organisations as diverse as the Medical Research Council, British Energy, the RAF and the Grant Museum of Zoology took part. The EPSRC’s science communicators in action in the Discover Zone
In 2008, an estimated 10,000 people visited the Discover Zone, many of whom have not attended a science event before. Its huge popularity shows how important such exhibitions are, particularly for people who do not live close to a science centre or museum. Many opportunities are available for supporting this initiative and for taking part as an exhibitor. Family Fun Days To tie in with our family events programme, we will once again be hosting two weekend Family Fun Days. Essentially an outdoor Discover Zone, complete with hands-on science, fun activities and lively workshops throughout the afternoon, it attracts a broader range of people and helps to raise the profile of the Festival and of science to vast numbers of passers-by, teenagers and other people who would not otherwise take part in the Festival. We are seeking sponsors for both Fun Days, with benefits here including branding, sampling and many opportunities to take part as an exhibitor. VIP Green Room The hub of the Festival for our speakers, guests, sponsors and other VIPs, all of whom spend much of their visit here, sponsoring this room is an excellent way to raise your profile and strengthen your brand’s credibility amongst scientists, policy-makers and other influencers. Benefits could include branding, literature distribution, sampling and networking opportunities throughout the Festival. Opening Night Party Again, if you are keen to raise your profile amongst speakers, our network of sponsors and other VIPs, supporting our Opening Night Party is an excellent way to do this.

“There is something quite unique in Cheltenham that will be copied around the world.” David King Former Government Chief Scientific Advisor “It has been great fun being involved in the programming and being around for such an enlightening and challenging festival.” Jonathan Porritt Guest Director 2007 “Being guest director of Cheltenham Science Festival was one of the more rewarding experiences of my year. I’d recommend the festival to anyone.” David Puttnam Guest Director 2006 “I go to many science festivals around the world and Cheltenham is the best one. It is setting the example.” Robert Winston Festival patron and Guest Director 2005 “Cheltenham Science Festival is a joy to visit. The only trouble is that when I see the programme I want to spend the whole week here!” Adam Hart-Davis “The MRC has been involved with Cheltenham for the past six years and the Festival just gets better and better. In 2008 it felt like there was a bigger buzz than ever surrounding the Town Hall - exceptional events for all the family and schools and some great 'after-hours' talks just for the grown-ups. It was a pleasure to be able to sponsor the CSF. We couldn't believe the number and range of people coming into the Discover Zone - which was busy from 10am through to 6pm - to explore our hands-on activties; a great opportunity for MRC scientists to engage with children and pensioners alike. Feedback from our researchers and visitors to the MRC stand suggests that both find it a massively rewarding experience.” Jude Eades Regional Communications Manager, Medical Research Council “Cheltenham Science Festival offers a brilliant alternative to the stuffy atmosphere of National Curriculum-obsessed, ammonia-scented school science lessons… it makes science kinda cool.” Bristol’s Venue Magazine For more details, contact Hollie Smith in the Cheltenham Festivals Sponsorship office T 01242 775860 F 01242 573902 E hollie.smith@cheltenhamfestivals.com Details are correct at time of going to press.
