FOR ADULTS: AREA 42 is the Science Festival’s special interactive zone for ages16+. Here you can get hands-on with experiments and technology, meet researchers from many different fields and find out how their work will have an impact on your future. Teams exploring the very nature of the universe will be here to explain the Aurora, Quantum Physics and the UK’s role in the Large Hadron Collider. Take time to talk to a local research g group p who have developed

technology that revolutionises the diagnosis of eye disease (including live retinal scanning) and to Swansea University researchers presenting the scum of the earth (better known as algae!) in their fascinating biofuel exhibit. How do we discover more about our most distant ancestors? This is the place to ask University of Leicester researchers. Philips UK brings together a showcase of interactive products to motivate us all to live healthy lives, whilst EADS Cassidian show how 3D gaming can be used to solve real life challenges.

The Discover Zone will be busier and more exciting than ever! Try code-cracking with GCHQ, see how high you can fire an air rocket and play the amazing bubble piano with the team from Southampton University. Cheltenham Science Festival is launching its own series of bite-sized science lectures, with speakers including Robert Winston, Barry Marshall and Adam Hart set to appear.

What can we learn from ants and bees? Social insects have to cope with all sorts including housing shortages, waste management and feeding a growing population. Adam Hart (6.30pm) explains that their societies seem to run more efficiently than ours. So what sort of lessons, if any, can we learn from them?

Would you experiment on yourself? Barry Marshall did and it won him the Nobel Prize. He swallowed a bacterium to show it was the cause of stomach ulcers. It could have killed him, it didn’t and the research has saved countless lives. Come and hear Barry talk about selfexperimentation.
