Fine for factory injury Brodie Cowburn brodie@baysidenews.com.au A COMPANY has been fined $40,000 after a worker’s hand was crushed at a Keysborough factory. In May 2022, a worker with Lazo Paper Pty Ltd was asked to clean a large gluing machine. The worker had not previously cleaned the machine,

and his hand got caught while he was wiping the bottom roller. The man suffered two broken fingers. On Monday, 22 April, WorkSafe confirmed that Lazo Paper Pty Ltd was found guilty of two charges of failing to provide and maintain plant that was safe and without risks to health. It was fined $40,000 and ordered to pay costs of $4941. In a statement, WorkSafe said that

“guarding on the machine, which included the use of corrugated cardboard bound together as a makeshift guard on the top of the machine, was unsecured and inadequate” “It was reasonably practicable for the company to ensure the machine had guarding, including an interlock device, that only allowed bodily access to the rollers when there was no risk and prevented bodily access at all

other times,” WorkSafe said. WorkSafe executive director of health and safety Narelle Beer says that safety is paramount in workplaces, and that the inexperienced worker should not have been put in a dangerous position. “The installation of guarding is a simple and relatively cost-effective way to reduce the risks of workers making contact with running
