The Difference We Made. Together. 2024 - 2025. At CHS, education is about preparation for life, not just exams. Our holistic curriculum ensures pupils leave with strong academic results, but also with the character, resilience, and compassion to make a difference in the world. That’s why altruism sits alongside academic achievement and active participation as one of the three pillars of a CHS education. Founded in 1855 by philanthropists who believed in the power of education to transform lives, we remain guided by those same principles today. A CHS education is designed to ripple outward, creating opportunities, opening doors, and building connections far beyond our school gates.

This year’s Impact Report highlights 25 ways we have lived that mission in 2024 - 2025. At a time when independent schools are under greater scrutiny than ever before, these stories are a reminder of the role CHS can and must play in the wider world. They show initiatives that serve others while enriching our pupils’ understanding, challenging assumptions, and nurturing empathy and purpose.

We Told The World About Our 1 In 6 Ambition Our community has already responded with generosity and together we have raised more than £2 million towards our £5 million goal, helping to secure the kind of education that opens doors and builds belonging well into the future.

This year saw the launch of the public phase of our 1 in 6 Bursary Campaign, our commitment to ensuring that 1 in 6 CHS pupils will be supported by a bursary by 2030.

The campaign is about more than numbers. It is about protecting the inclusive CHS experience that so many Old Waconians describe with pride. CHS has always been a place where young people from all walks of life grow, connect, and thrive, forming friendships and futures as unique as they are. But today, with the pressures of the cost-of-living crisis and the introduction of VAT on school fees, that ethos is under threat. Without action, we risk becoming a school that no longer reflects the realities of the wider world.

Partnership With Local State Primary Schools Entered Its Fifth Year

Among the many joint projects which took place throughout the year, teachers from all partner schools collaborated on a writing standards project to help raise attainment in literacy. The Science Outreach programme saw over 140 Year 5 pupils visit CHS to take part in hands-on experiments in our science labs and our catch-up swimming programme enabled 15 Year 4 pupils to reach the national minimum standard of swimming.

Training Tomorrow’s Teachers Since 2021, CHS has supported 16 SCITT trainees and every single one has secured a teaching role at different schools across the country from Portsmouth Grammar School to Parrs Wood High. This year’s SCITT cohort included 4 language trainees in French and Spanish.

CHS To The Gambia In December 2024, pupils travelled to our partner school in The Gambia to work alongside local teachers and children. In the run-up to the trip, the CHS community rallied together with ‘Gambia Day’ fundraising and collections of football shirts, toys and laptops to support partner schools.

“Our pupils hear of their privilege very often but this humbling experience gifted them a lens to see this clearly. That said, it also reminded them that stripping back material goods and experiencing raw emotion and human interaction can also create a recipe for shared joy.” Mr John Wilson, Assistant Head

Leavers Give Back The Class of 2025 raised an impressive £8000 for the 1 in 6 Campaign as part of their leaving gift to CHS through an online auction and some smaller events. The final amount was announced by Head Pupil Kate at their Graduation ceremony in June.

Litter Pick and Chat Each week, a team of pupils took to the neighbouring streets for community litter picks. As well as giving them the chance to connect with one another, the club is a visible reminder to the wider community that even the smallest actions can make a big difference.

540 Triathletes, £54,000 Raised CHS hosted the Knight Frank Schools Triathlon, organised by charity Restless Development. Over 540 young triathletes from 14 local schools took part, supported by CHS pupil volunteers. Participants swam, cycled and ran and collectively covered 1700km on the day. The event raised more than £54,000 for Restless Development and other charities selected by the participating schools.

CHS Staff Continued To Give Back

OF STAFF ARE SCHOOL GOVENORS

Our pupils continued to turn ideas around sustainability into action. Junior School children grew vegetables for our dining hall, planted wildflowers and trees, built wormeries and ran awareness campaigns with Senior School students around antiwaster initiatives. The Eco Committee, attended by members of Sixth Form Council ensured sustainability remained a priority for student leaders throughout the year.

CHS teacher Mr Cartwright refereed a gruelling charity event known as “The Longest Game”, enduring nearly 11 hours straight with minimal sleep to support an outstanding cause. His record-breaking effort helped raise over £115,000 for three charities, LooseHeadz, Wooden Spoon and the Lions Trust.

This accolade reflects our structured, whole‑community approach to inclusion. The NCfD’s Silver Award is the second of three accreditation stages, highlighting our meaningful progress in embedding equality, diversity, and inclusion at every level.

Local Primary Schools Attend CHS Music And Drama Productions Over 200 Year 5 pupils from partner schools attended our Music Outreach Concert and Drama Production, Emil and The Detectives.

Parents Sharing The Love Of Reading with Local Primary School Children A team of parent volunteers supported our local primary state schools by reading with their pupils building skills and confidence in young readers.

From Manchester To The Mountains In Morrocco Thirty students from Years 11 and 12 embarked on a 13-night expedition to Morocco, immersing themselves in the rugged High Atlas Mountains. The main phase of the trip took them to Tizi N Oucheg, a remote Berber community, where they worked on infrastructure projects alongside local people. Beyond mixing cement and laying road foundations, students built friendships, developed resilience and gained a new perspective on gratitude and community.

“The impact wasn’t about how much money we raised, it was about meaning. In Tizi N Oucheg, our pupils worked shoulder to shoulder with the Berber community on essential projects, but the real transformation came through connection with the people they met. Opening Our Gates Every week during term time, over 1000 members of local sports and activity groups access our facilities. In the school holidays, young people from local primary schools joined football and sport camps run by Stockport County, Manchester City and Kings Camp

Camping Under CHS Stars For Local Primary School

We hosted the end-of-year residential for Year 6 pupils from one of our partner primary schools, Cale Green. By bringing the experience onto our school site, we made it more accessible and affordable for the school to give their pupils the excitement of a proper residential.

Waconian Walk Pupils, parents and staff joined together for the latest walk to raise money for House charities and our school in The Gambia. The Walk was started in 1966 by former staff, Ian Ray.

Our Sixth Formers continued their special connection with elderly neighbours from Smithy Green, Stockport Homes, hosting a termly lunch filled with conversation, music, and laughter. Guests were also invited to attend CHS drama productions and our annual Carol Service.

Our Pre-loved uniform sales raised £2,700 for the Bursary Fund, giving more young people the chance to access a CHS education. At the same time, families saved money, over 1,000 items were diverted from landfill, and countless items of uniform were given a brand-new lease of life. The total raised through the Pre-Loved uniform initiative since 2023 now stands at £12,689.

Junior Waconian Charity Day Raise Over £1700

Junior School pupils selected Francis House Children’s Charity and Hearing Dogs for Deaf People as their nominated charities. The day saw classrooms being transformed into little markets, as pupils hosted a variety of stalls, selling sweet treats and enjoying games. Alongside this, Waconians embarked on a ‘Week of Walking’, tracking their steps each day to raise sponsorship money.

CHS Named School Of The Year At Queer Student Awards 2025 CHS was named School of the Year at the UK’s Queer Student Awards (QSAs), receiving recognition for its commitment to fostering an inclusive and compassionate culture where every young person feels seen, supported, and celebrated. Head Pupil Sol accepted the award on behalf of the whole CHS community. The judges praised how “equality is embedded into the school ethos as a whole,” spotlighting achievements such as the Silver Investors in Diversity Award and innovative initiatives like podcasts that spark meaningful conversations. The recognition was made even more special because nominator Eva Echo (Class of 1998, Old Waconian and activist) highlighted CHS’s dedication to kindness, respect, and authentic belonging.

Individual Waconian Endeavours

Alongside whole-school initiatives, many individual Waconians led their own fundraising efforts this year. Among them, Clem spent three hours selling unwanted books in Heaton Moor, raising £87.40 towards the Knight Frank Schools Triathlon total. Meanwhile, Iris took on her first ever Manchester Marathon, running the full 26.2 miles in aid of Mind.

CHS Continued Support For TEDx Manchester’s Bursary Programme Our third year of support gave free or reduced price tickets to the annual event at the Bridgewater Hall and enabled individuals of diverse backgrounds to attend this inspiring annual event. Current Sixth Form students volunteered in front of house and backstage roles throughout the event.

Over £12k Raised by Arts Fusion Team Students on CHS’s Creative Arts Pathway have shown that creativity and compassion go hand in hand, following the huge success of their Arts Fusion event in aid of Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital’s Youth Service. The event, organised entirely as part of their Gold Arts Award, brought together fashion from a range of well-known brands alongside collections from local businesses. Guests were also treated to a performance from Old Waconian and former X Factor contestant Raquelle Gracie, Class of 2005.
