Some of my favorite furnishings come from one of our signature upholstery lines, Sherrill Furniture. The collection features an elegant range of customizable sofas, chaise lounges, and sectionals. Every detail, from the arms to the skirt, can be tailored to your liking.
Favorite Furnishing?
A Middleton Rice Bed. One of the many reasons I love it is the historical reproduction of the traditional rice bed at Middleton Plantation. This piece connects to the history of the Lowcountry. This is offered in the traditional mahogany finish, along with a unique lime-wash finish.
We carry such a wide variety of lines that it’s hard for me to choose just one. From chic leather-topped ottomans to versatile cabinets that work in laundry rooms, bathrooms, or even offices, our collections offer endless solutions. We reimagine pieces for uses beyond their traditional ones, often sourcing custom pieces that aren’t even on our showroom floor.
Chic Storage Solution?
The Heron Wooden Chest by Theodore Alexander is truly a work of art. This versatile piece transitions seamlessly between a buffet and a credenza, making it both functional and beautiful. Its two antique metal leaf doors feature a lovely depiction of herons about to take flight.
Favorite Furnishing Line?
That’s a tough question, because I truly love all of our manufacturers due to their quality and craftsmanship. I often find myself drawn to Theodore Alexander. From their refined contemporary designs to the timeless elegance of the Althorp Living History collection, they offer everything from traditional to transitional to modern custom pieces.
Replace or Reupholster?
There are times when a family heirloom holds such sentimental value that reupholstering it is the perfect choice. We carry an array of premium fabric lines ideal for refreshing and recovering those cherished pieces, allowing you to preserve their history while giving them new life.
The answer to this question varies depending on the design project. I frequently work with Sherrill Furniture, Hickory White, and Lillian August. I’ve even collaborated directly with manufacturers to bring hand-drawn concepts to life. We have a curated collection of brands that allow us to create spaces that reflect every client’s style. It’s always wise to weigh the value of reupholstering versus purchasing new. Fully upholstered pieces often require extensive fabric yardage and labor, which can make replacement the more practical option. However, when it comes to a beloved family heirloom, it’s absolutely worth the investment to reupholster and preserve its story. 74 • CH+D • Winter 2026

A grand front entry features a steel French door and insulated, impact-rated floor-to-ceiling windows for coastal durability. A significant part of the renovation included the addition of an oversized window wall that floods the first and second floors with natural light and landscape views. A Moravian star pendant from Visual Comfort & Co. crowns the space with a warm glow, and is seen from inside or from the outside. Wall sconces ensure the ambiance is set when the sun goes down.
The kitchen layout remained the same, with aesthetic upgrades that enhance the rustic charm Chris was looking for. The space is grounded in new DuChateau European white oak hardwood floors, just the start of the many old-world-inspired elements incorporated throughout. “These planks have an inferno finish. You can see hints of orange and black, almost like the wood has been scorched,” Chris says. A brick veneer backsplash installed with El Dorado stone complements the adjacent brick fireplace in the lounge area.

An informal living space, the lounge was designed around the old wood-burning fireplace. Chris added custom-built floating shelves made of reclaimed wood for textured character. He adds, “These pieces came from an old building on Market Street, built in 1850. I love reclaimed wood and have made it a point to provide unique pieces like these at the Charleston Design Center.”
Vaulted pecky cypress crowns the primary bedroom with natural appeal, while the oversized candelabra chandelier adds a touch of luxury. Chris included his family’s hand-carved chest from Thailand, which once sat at the foot of his parents’ bed. Inspired by Caribbean interiors, the primary bathroom was built directly behind the bedroom with open access to the other.

STORAGE SOLUTIONS
Cabinet Confidence Custom-fit glide-outs transform existing cabinets into the ultimate storage solution, regardless of the space or the size of the stored item. The Setting:
As an avid baker, the homeowner wanted a non-invasive storage solution to maintain a clean, cohesive look throughout her kitchen; especially her mixer, which is notoriously heavy and easy to drop when hauling it in and out of cabinetry. The homeowner needed a solution to her storage problem.

The homeowner craved a cleaner, more design-forward kitchen, so they cleared the countertops and placed appliances and utensils into drawers, seamlessly tucking them away. While the minimal aesthetic was achieved, everyday tasks became fussy and time-consuming. Simple routines, like pulling out a mixer to bake muffins, became a taxing task of retrieving and returning appliances to their place. The homeowners needed a solution that kept the modern, clean aesthetic without sacrificing functionality. A quick search and call to Cabinet IQ confirmed that a storage strategy is available, and these cabinet experts are the ones to handle it.
The Solution:
Yorktown cabinetry was installed, featuring storage solutions that enhance a homeowner's ease. One of the standout upgrades installed was a mixer pull-out. The mixer sits on a platform that hydraulically raises, allowing the homeowner to use it at working height without lifting it. Built-in power is installed at the back of the cabinet so the mixer stays plugged in and ready to use at all times. Pull-outs are on both sides of the cooktop: one side holds a spice rack for quick access to ingredients, and the other stores utensils for easy reach. This cabinetry is designed to limit running across the kitchen to grab essentials; everything is right where the homeowner needs it. It also features a two-tier silverware drawer. Dividers are built in to prevent anything from sliding around. Additionally, a pot-and-pan pull-out was installed to allow the homeowner to store cookware vertically and horizontally, right where they need it. Under the sink is a three-tier pull-out. The top tier includes a paper towel holder and a trash bag canister. This storage solution keeps countertops clear and gives everything a designated place. What are signs a homeowner needs an HVAC tune-up?
A homeowner may need a “tune-up” when there are higher utility costs, uneven temperatures throughout the home, or poor air quality. These issues often point to clogged filters, dirty coils, or components working harder than they should.
PRO TIP:
Trying to catch small issues early can extend your system's life and prevent costly breakdowns. Along with scheduling annual or biannual preventive maintenance to restore efficiency, improve comfort, and help you breathe cleaner air.
How can homeowners improve air quality without a full replacement?

to their systems, such as UV Light Systems or a type of air cleaner. They can also schedule ductwork cleanings with us that remove dust, particulates, and sanitize the ductwork.
PRO TIP:
Change air filters every 30–60 days, keep vents clear of furniture, and consider adding a whole-home air purifier or dehumidifier. On top of this, the recommended frequency for scheduling a ductwork cleaning can be anywhere between three to five years.
What are the most common plumbing issues found in older homes?
Older homes often face toilet and drainage issues caused by aging parts or buildup in the pipes. Regular maintenance and mindful drain use can help prevent costly plumbing problems down the line.
PRO TIP:
Schedule annual plumbing inspections and look under sinks regularly for early signs of moisture. Prevention is always cheaper than a repair.
How to prep HVAC and plumbing for seasonal changes? As the seasons change, replacing your air filters, replacing batteries in carbon monoxide detectors, and scheduling preventative maintenance will keep your HVAC equipment running smoothly. For plumbing, disconnect garden hoses to prevent freezing, shut off outdoor faucets, and check under sinks or around pipes for any leaks.

Describe this project's features: This project was unique in that it arrived partially designed. The owners purchased the home during COVID-19, but the original design–build team couldn’t see it through. When we stepped in as the architects, we inherited strong conceptual direction from the clients, including their material and lighting preferences, and used that as the foundation for a full architectural reorganization. We re-established circulation flow, resolved storage and spatial efficiency issues, and shaped the home’s functionality so the final design fully realized their vision with clarity and cohesion.
What is your favorite space? There are many wonderful spaces in this home. Each bathroom is unique; one is spa-like, and another is playful, but the family room stands out. The original layout blocked views to the marsh, and the heavy ceiling and small fireplace felt out of sync with the rest of the home. Working with McGuire Custom Homes, my team reimagined the space with generous storage drawers and a built-in buffet with a wet bar. The room is now unified and lifted by the soft wash of Benjamin Moore’s Quiet Moments, drawing the eye from the entry to the view beyond.
Describe the entryway updates: Upon entering the home, a giant curved entry staircase obstructed the foyer and blocked the marsh views that initially inspired the redesign. Joy's design relocated the staircase to the side, and the foyer was reconstructed to flow better with the home's reverse floor plan. Visual Comfort's Talia bubble light fixture, board and batten walls, and the owner's antique side chairs complete the space for a fresh and welcoming update.
What was the biggest challenge? As it often happens in renovations, unexpected structural issues arose when the walls and ceilings were opened in one of the main living spaces. In the first-floor family room, the ceiling was structurally unsound, requiring the removal of a coffered ceiling. This challenge became a design opportunity. Tongue-and-groove paneling with shallow faux beams gives the family room a fresh architectural feel that suits the updated coastal aesthetic. Describe your building philosophy: My company is built on the commitment to a high level of customization. Our goal is to build exactly what the homeowners envision, making no two projects the same. We take a hands-on approach, collaborating closely with the designers to deliver the best result for every client.
What inspired this renovation? The existing kitchen was dark and closed off from the living room. Our goal was to create a coastal feel through lighter color material selections and open up the connection between the spaces, enhancing the kitchen’s relationship to the outdoors. The exterior has rustic elements of dark stucco, copper, and slate, so we echoed those in the interior with exposed beams. Lighting installed by Blue Water Electric in the living room, kitchen, and parts of the foyer was updated with fixtures and can lights from Visual Comfort Co. The result is spaces that are bright and welcoming at all times of the day.
What was the biggest challenge? The biggest challenge in any renovation is blending new updates seamlessly with the existing spaces while giving the home an upgraded feel. Over the course of this six-month renovation, we installed new finishes and carefully matched the existing beams with newly installed ones. Our team was challenged to make both sets of beams blend effortlessly. All beams were thoughtfully finished, completing the cohesive look.
How did you balance function and aesthetics? We opened up the floor plan, dramatically improving the kitchen's flow compared to the original layout—the fridge doors could hardly clear the island. We concealed the new appliances from Plugs behind cabinetry panels that seamlessly match the custom cabinetry from Spartina Kitchens & Baths. These custom cabinets include roll-out drawers and corner pull-outs, adding both functionality and ease of use. To top it off, World Granite installed stone throughout the kitchen. Describe your design philosophy: My design philosophy is timeless, elegant, and deeply personal. I create meaningful, lived-in spaces that feel collected over time, not cookie-cutter or showroom-ready. While I bring my own touch to every project, the people who live there are the true inspiration. My goal is for each space to feel authentic and beautifully in style for years to come.
What makes this project unique? The home’s solid structure set the stage for its transformation from a ’90s colonial into a timeless, transitional space. Custom finishes and bold colors reflect the clients’ vibrant personalities and family life. Coffered ceilings, limewashed walls, custom murals, marble sinks, fireplaces, and herringbone heated wood floors define the design. Lighting blends custom Urban Electric fixtures with vintage Italian pieces, bridging historic charm and modern elegance.
How did the clients’ style influence the design? Funky, fresh, and full of personality is how to describe this living space. True to my design philosophy, I layered the clients’ art and collectibles with sourced furnishings that create this positive energy in this space. We did not shy away from bold color choices such as teal and red, the clients’ favorite colors.
What was your favorite space? Just off the living room, the dining area is a space that tells stories from every era and corner. A new mural by Rebecca Atwood immediately draws the eye, setting an electric tone paired with a high-gloss, blue-hued paint on the ceiling and molding. The tree artistry mirrors the outdoors beyond. Zuma Imports Hosts Fall Launch Party

Many assume winter is the season to overlook landscaping, but it’s actually the ideal moment to plan ahead. As the season changes, let design inspiration take over.
Tidal Creek Designs transformed this Lowcountry courtyard into a backyard haven. This landscape expert designed a landscape and hardscape design with bluestone, brick, and marble inlay. The brick was sourced from a factory in Chicago. Reproduction of 17th-century Downing Street trough planters was added as a nod to the famed gardens in London. The team preserved the original courtyard gates. A patch of mondo grass creates a pet-friendly area for the homeowner's dog. Upon entry, a softened wall of Teddy Bear Magnolia adds height, underplanted with Camellia sasanqua for seasonal color. A cozy lounge area invites year-round enjoyment. hese homeowners selected Schlabach Wood Design cabinetry for its Amish craftsmanship, enduring quality, and refined simplicity. The Park Place cabinet face offers a sleek, embellishment-free profile, finished with a reflective highgloss sheen that enhances its sturdy maplewood construction. Each detail, from cabinet face style to hardware, was chosen through a hands-on design experience at Classic Kitchens of Charleston’s Mount Pleasant showroom, where the homeowners could see, touch, and personalize their selections. Classic Kitchens of Charleston owner Jay Valk shares, “We worked with this returning client on their second home to update a few of their outdated spaces to make their home more inviting.” In just three months, he and his team of skilled craftsmen transformed the home’s most-used areas with thoughtful design and expert installation that blend functionality with understated sophistication. cohesion. A full-height countersplash mirrors the kitchen island’s waterfall surface, adding visual continuity. The homeowners desired a light-filled, uncluttered kitchen with ample storage and a neutral palette. White semi-gloss cabinetry pairs beautifully with a mix of brass knobs and linear pulls, infusing the space with a modern coastal feel. The chef-style range is built directly into the cabinetry for a sleek, integrated appearance that keeps countertops clear and organized. Beyond the central kitchen, an adjoining utility space was reimagined as a combined scullery and laundry room, maximizing every inch of usable space. The area now includes secondary sinks, a laundry worktop, and an additional stacked oven for entertaining ease. “I love helping homeowners make a huge change and updating their space,” Jay says. “This layout allows for a beautiful main kitchen while keeping the prep and mess tucked away.” In the living room, a new wall of custom shelving seamlessly integrates with the adjacent kitchen, offering both style and practicality. Crafted from the same maplewood as the kitchen cabinetry, the built-ins create a cohesive visual flow
between the two spaces. Open display shelves frame a central entertainment area, allowing the homeowners to showcase collected art pieces and family heirlooms while keeping storage functional and discreet. Subtle LED backlighting highlights the shelving’s clean lines and craftsmanship, adding a warm glow that enhances the room’s inviting atmosphere. In the primary bathroom, a bright white furniture-style vanity anchors the design. Its flat fronts maintain a minimalist look that echoes the home’s cohesive aesthetic. A combination of knob pulls adds interest, while three wall-mounted LED sconces ensure soft, even lighting morning and night. Beneath, a porcelain hex tile floor brings subtle texture and durability. Hardwood flooring was replaced with linear porcelain tile, mirroring the look of the primary suite while providing a practical, water-resistant surface. Jay reflects, “I’ve been in business for twelve years, and a majority of our clients are repeat business. That speaks volumes for the work we do.”✴

A boutique builder nearly doubled the size of this Mount Pleasant home.
F
or a homeowner embarking on a major home renovation and addition, it's important to hire the right team. For this extensive Mount Pleasant remodel and expansion, Dan Logan and John Goodwin of Stono Construction worked alongside designer Wendy Mauro.
At Stono Construction, collaboration is part of the process. “It is vitally important for a designer to be able to navigate through the building process with the builder and the homeowner without causing 110 • CH+D • Winter 2026
confusion, delays, and extra expenses. Working with Wendy and her team is easy, and we know we can count on her,” Dan adds. That partnership was central to this Mount Pleasant project. The late eighties home was typical of its time, with compartmentalized rooms and limited storage. The original layout offered three bedrooms, a compact kitchen, and a family room. With young children, the homeowners needed more breathing room. The lot allowed for a thoughtful expansion

across the rear and side, as well as the addition of a second floor. Stono Construction carved out additional storage within the original footprint and added roughly 1,000 square feet. “The addition expanded the rear along the full width of the house and really opened up what had been a small kitchen and family room,” Dan explains. That area is now a larger kitchen and family room with a screen porch off the back. From there, the addition wraps around the home's right side. This portion introduces a bar area, a powder room, a drop zone, and laundry space with a built-in desk.

bathroom and hallway, while the addition of a second story made space for the flex room. The project is now complete with four bedrooms and two bathrooms, along with a renovated interior. The updated floor plan flows much better for how we live today, while still honoring its original character. Outside, rough-cut cedar siding helps the original structure and new addition read as one. Inside, matched heart pine floors continue that story. “Most people would go into that house and not know that there was an addition done to it now,” Dan says. “That attention to detail is what we are most proud of,” John adds. ✴

Modern Elegance on East Bay On one of Charleston’s earliest residential streets, a kitchen and family room renovation

his historic Rainbow Row residence was ready for an updated take to accommodate the owner's current needs without sacrificing its character. Kate Miles Design handled sourcing, making the selections and installation. Kate brightened the kitchen with a more modern aesthetic and created a multifunctional, inviting space. An antique table that feels authentic to the home’s age, while being distinctly more relaxed than the grand dining room, provides the perfect space for the family to gather. The homeowners also wanted to add an elevator, which created an opportunity to rework the laundry room and powder bath. The result is a layered transformation that begins on the main level and culminates in a reimagined thirdfloor primary suite. St. Pierre Construction led the general contracting for the construction phase, and

her team at Kate Miles Design handled sourcing, selection, and installation. Kate brightened the once-dark kitchen and carved out space for multifunction. She opted to refinish the brown perimeter cabinetry in a crisp white and introduced a custom-built kitchen island in a light seafoam green. It anchors the room and visually links the working side of the kitchen to a casual dining space connected by an inviting banquette. Here, an antique country table provides space for the entire family and feels authentic to the home's age, yet distinctly more relaxed than the grand dining room. French doors now separate the two gathering places with the flexibility to close off or connect. The connected seating area’s aesthetic upgrades include new upholstery and throws, alongside the

An elevator installed for the homeowner’s aging relatives absorbed much of the space left for Kate to rework what remained. Ceiling-height pantry doors conceal clutter and house a stacked laundry unit for more storage space. A historic walnut door with polished brass hardware punctuates a hallway wrapped in a high-gloss muted pink, hinting at the visual story inside. The wallpaper is an immersive backdrop for a carved marble vessel sink with exposed brass plumbing. Wall-mounted fixtures maximize elbow room in this
small space. Herringbone tile floors create a subtle connection. Upstairs, a former bedroom was transformed into a dedicated dressing room, finished with paneled perimeter storage and operable library ladders. The connected primary bathroom received an equally dazzling reinvention. Floating, furniture-style dual vanities offer generous counterspace with undermount sinks, underlit bases, and fluted LED mirrors above. The walls are painted a whisper-soft pink that reads almost white, a subtle echo of the bolder pink downstairs. Linen folding shades with a woven trim layer in texture without distraction.

Unseen Seams

In this Kiawah River home, precision paid off in durable, expertly fabricated surfaces.
F
rom material selection to fabrication to installation, this award-winning stone supply, fabrication, and installation team delivers flawless results with exceptional craftsmanship. For Greg Hoffman, owner of Universal Marble & Granite in North Charleston, every surface installation begins with precision. “The template process includes exact measurements for fabrication and installation. If there’s a full riser in place of a backsplash, we install the countertops first, then take new measurements for those finishing pieces so it’s absolutely seamless,” Greg says. Invisible seams are a UMG hallmark.
For this project, the kitchen is wrapped in 2-cm Castana quartz, chosen for its elegant, marble-like veining. After the homeowner’s selection, Universal Marble & Granite’s team took on-site measurements during the template phase, then returned to their North Charleston fabrication facility to custom-cut each piece for its specific application. This includes vein matching, seam alignment, and precision polishing.
These Kiawah River homeowners initially met with Universal Marble & Granite in hopes of finding a marble surface for their project. In the end, quartz proved the winner. Engineered from a blend of resin and natural quartzite crystals, quartz is a man-made material with the appearance and superior durability to natural stone. It has become a go-to for kitchens, bathrooms, and enclosed outdoor spaces. “It’s stain-resistant, beautiful, and has spectacular patterns,” says Kay, Greg’s business associate. “People come in looking for marble, and we always show them quartz first. It’s so realistic

The home’s open layout flows from the kitchen into the living room, where honed Black Mist granite anchors the fireplace surround in a sleek, dramatic finish. A Collector’s Fresh Canvas

Storage and function were top of mind during this whole-home renovation in Mount Pleasant.
W
hat began as a simple kitchen renovation in Mount Pleasant’s Snee Farm neighborhood quickly evolved into a full-scale home transformation. Homeowner Maureen, owner of the antiques boutique Peacock Palace, needed a functional and beautiful backdrop to showcase her impressive collection of furnishings and finds. “When I met with Maureen and her husband, I knew immediately we shared the same aesthetic,” recalls designer Amber Jackson of Simply Curated Designs. “She already had this incredible eye. My job was to make the house pretty for her to shine.” Together, they envisioned a home that balanced classic Southern charm with the functionality their busy family needed. “The house had good bones, but

its 1980s layout didn’t fit her style or lifestyle. Our goal was to open things up, add light, and create storage in every corner,” Amber says. The project began in August 2024, with meticulous planning. By the time Maverick Construction started to work that February, every selection, from lighting and tile to hardware and cabinetry, had been finalized. Amber emphasizes, “The more you can decide upfront, the smoother the renovation goes. We didn’t have to wait on a single selection once construction began.” What was once a dark galley kitchen became a bright, open hub for entertaining. Walls came down, sunken floors were raised, and outdated coffered ceilings were removed to enhance flow and light. The sitting room

was originally eight inches lower, with just one tiny doorway. Now it’s open and airy, and the space finally feels like it fits the grandeur of the home. Every surface was renewed with new doors, trim, and flooring throughout, and thoughtful architectural details were added. The fireplace was reworked to accommodate the new floor height, maintaining its original brick for character. Though Maureen initially leaned toward an all-white kitchen, Amber encouraged a more layered approach. “I love a white kitchen, but adding color or texture in the backsplash or lighting keeps it interesting,” she says. with custom inset cabinetry by Coastal Cabinets and Signature Appliances’ fully integrated panels for a seamless look. When demolition revealed that the old cabinetry was built into the stairs, Amber and the millworker adapted the new design to preserve storage. “It’s always a puzzle,” she laughs, “but we ended up with even more space than before.” Storage was a recurring theme throughout the house. The former dining room became a butler’s pantry and office, finished in high-gloss cabinetry and patinaed brass fixtures. Floating shelves and reflective surfaces give the compact space depth and elegance. Upstairs, a secondary laundry room was added for convenience, while the
original downstairs laundry, used for the pool, was expanded with custom-builtins and colorful Mirth Studio tile. “We coordinated the cabinetry with the tile and used a stackable washer and dryer to maximize every inch,” Amber says. The new dining room features wainscoting, dental molding, and wallpaper in cornflower blue, a nod to Maureen’s eclectic taste. They wanted every room to have personality, and the antiques and art bring that to life. A banquette in the kitchen’s breakfast area provides casual seating with family-friendly practicality. The base cushion is faux leather, easy to wipe clean, and the oversized back cushions add softness. “It’s beautiful, but it’s

Resort-Style Ambiance A spa-calm, resort-style lighting plan layers decorative statements with subtle architectural light to create a Lowcountry haven.
T
he brief for this whole-home lighting plan was clear from the start. The homeowner wanted a calming, resortstyle atmosphere that still felt personal and unique. She and interior design specialist Allison Marino and Tricia Hansen of Lowcountry Lighting Studio, worked alongside the builders at King and Society Construction to translate the homeowner’s vision into a decorative-forward scheme with layers of recessed and task lighting to keep the home functional from daytime prep to evening unwind. “It’s important to have a streamlined selection process when building a custom home,” Erin says. Tricia brought the homeowner into the showroom and pulled vendors and silhouettes that fit the desired scheme. The goal was a home that reads spa-quiet at a glance, with sculptural fixtures that hold attention up close. Scale matters as much as style in a whole-home lighting plan. Working with lighting designers who understand how a fixture might read in a space is essential. For example, open lanterns, cage forms, and airy acrylic or glass frames allow for larger-scale installations without visual

heaviness, even in a smaller space. In tall or vaulted spaces, placement is as essential as the fixture. “Small-scale recessed lights support that flexibility. Today’s recessed pin lights can be about an inch in diameter. They all but disappear while adding a subtle wash of illumination. Recessed coverage also gives decorative freedom. If you love a pendant with a single bulb, the room still performs because the ceiling grid carries the general load,” Erin says. “Good lighting has layers. Recessed fixtures create a quiet ceiling and even baseline. Ambient and decorative pieces add warmth and personality. Task lighting delivers precision where you need it most. Dimmers knit those layers together. They control lumen output so the same room can flex from bright and practical to soft and intimate. No one wants to eat in a dining room that feels clinical,” Erin says. Dimmers give options and mood control at a touch. In the kitchen, the central island’s lucite legs prompted the team to echo that clarity with oversized acrylic pendants. The look is clean and timeless with a scale that matches the island mass.

The connected dining area features a sculptural chandelier in white gesso with contemporary gold leaf for soft contrast. Outside in the breezeway, a cluster of woven, oversized pendants in complementary materials creates a sense of movement between indoor and outdoor living. “Keeping to one vendor family in this scenario ensures harmony while varying shape and weave for interest,” Erin explains. The team selected a 35-inch round mirror in stone-white to pair with a three-light vanity in aged brass and matte white. The round mirror softens the line of the cabinetry while the light bar spreads even face illumination without glare. Erin recommends, “Confirm vanity width first, then mirror diameter or length, then fixture spread. For a single mirror, center the bar or chandelier on the faucet and keep the 132 • CH+D • Winter 2026
bottom of the fixture a few inches above the mirror's top. For sconces, place them at roughly eye level and 5 to 6 feet apart, adjusted for mirror width and shade size.” The primary bathroom is as resort-style as it gets, with a Bismarckia chandelier that adds botanical texture to a clean silhouette. For vanity task lighting, Montrose sconces, inspired by calla lilies, layer a soft, soothing glow at eye level. In layers, these light fixture selections contribute to the homeowner’s calming escape. or an interior designer, the project begins at the first meeting with a homeowner. Debby Gomulka of Provenance Lee Interiors believes the experience for a guest can be as lasting and impactful as an interior designed for long-term living. In this instance, the goal of bridging the two revealed a magical result. The project draws heavily on Moroccan culture, with finishes, materials, and colors inspired by those found in Marrakech. “The depth of our client discovery process becomes evident in the story of one of our most significant early projects, the transformation of an 1840s mansion into eight apartments,” says Debby Gomulka.

That sensibility translates seamlessly to Charleston, where historic architecture, layered patina, and a coastal light work in tandem with globally inspired design. For local homeowners, the project offers a roadmap for creating spaces that feel transportive yet rooted in place. city like Charleston, where preservation matters, Debby saw an opportunity to honor the architecture while introducing bold, fashion-forward elements that speak to how people live today. Debby worked from a book of regional photography given to her by the client and began her process. She drew on images of tiled courtyards, arched doorways, and saturated textiles to inform everything from wall colors to hardware finishes. “The collaboration process involved hours of phone conversations and coordination of paint colors and finishes, which is a level of detail that reflects our commitment to fully realizing our

clients' visions rather than settling for approximations,” she says. That same meticulous approach is what she now brings to Charleston homeowners, whether they are refreshing a single room in a downtown condominium or reimagining a family home in one of the area’s growing suburbs. “Rather than simply selecting existing products, we created new solutions when existing options did not align with my vision for the project. This willingness to invest in custom development, whether commissioning artists, developing textiles, or collaborating with craftspeople, distinguishes our
process from designers who work within predetermined product catalogs.” For this home, that meant sourcing artisanal lighting that echoed the geometry of Moroccan lanterns, layering performance fabrics that could stand up to everyday life, and curating art that felt collected over time. A boutique landscape design firm offers Charleston homeowners the simplicity and satisfaction of a one-stop studio for elevated outdoor living from porch to planters.
A
s any Charleston homeowner knows, our coastal climate can be a luxury and a challenge. Knowledge of the Lowcountry environment and which materials thrive here is a primary reason many residents opt to work with a landscape designer. Drainage, irrigation, and tired turf are common issues, so thoughtful planning from the start is essential. For this project, the homeowners called on landscape designer Kristian Thiem of Tidal Creek Designs to address a new pool and deck addition while still maximizing green lawn space for pets. Working with Real Landscaping for hardscape and landscape

installation, Kristian developed a master plan that considered how the family would live in the space. Once the living elements were in place, outdoor furniture was layered in and accented with planters for visual variety and softness. “We were introduced to Kristian by our pool contractor and hired her to develop a landscape design for our backyard that would complement our new pool and deck area. We were thrilled to discover that she could also help us source outdoor furniture and planters for our pool deck and porches. Being new to the area, we relied on Kristian’s knowledge and advice regarding what to plant and where.

Kristian was professional, personable, and positive throughout. She really listened to us and delivered on our input,” the homeowners share. Kristian created new planting beds, reimagined the front walkway from the driveway to the steps, adjusted the irrigation, and laid out landscaping beds along the marsh-view line. Deer activity in the front yard required reinforcing the plant palette with Lowcountry native species that meet critical line buffer guidelines. After pool construction, the team handled regrading and sod replacement to restore a generous green space for the family’s dog. 140 • CH+D • Winter 2026
“What I love most is working with clients who are overwhelmed with their space and turning it into something beautiful and functional, where they can unwind and feel joy for years to come,” Kristian says. In roughly five months, she delivered an outdoor environment with herb gardens and citrus-filled planters to tinker in, sitting areas to lounge and entertain, and cohesive curb appeal that feels distinctly Charleston. ✴

Northern Soul, Coastal Ease Every design decision prioritized comfort and function in this Daniel Island renovation.
H
aving previously lived in the northeast, this homeowner wanted a home with its regional sensibility that felt lived-in and chic, but in the South. The house that sits beside a preserve with a pool that reads like a private oasis, so the interiors needed an update to shift easily from moody and sexy at night to bright and coastal by day. Function had to keep pace with how this family actually lives and entertains. The homeowners hired HW Cabinet Co. who led this significant transformation. In the kitchen, a pony wall once cut the room in half, closing off views and

traffic. “We removed it and created two flat islands to improve the flow of space,” says designer Cody Wilt of HW Cabinet Co. Now one island works hard, and the other hosts. The homeowner cooks often and serves big meals, so two small sinks were combined into a 45-inch prep sink on the working island. That single decision opened up seating, plating, and conversation without sacrificing performance. Zones follow real tasks. Material discipline brought calm to the project with an expanse of Taj Mahal
quartzite. The design team carried it up the backsplash for a full-height treatment to settle the eye and add quiet drama. The new custom cabinetry are painted in Alabaster White and keeps the perimeter light with plenty of space to hide everyday kitchen items. Colonial Alder adds warmth and weight to the double islands where the room needs it. Reeded glass softens visibility on select doors and adds a tailored finish to the millwork. Designer Kate Hannon expresses, “The family loves blue, but the house had too much of it. We neutralized the envelope and concentrated color in one

A sculptural light adds a soft gleam and pulls the composition together,” she says. A bulky service zone became a compact wine and bourbon room with concealed refrigeration, an ice maker, and a dishwasher. It supports hosting and keeps cleanup out of sight. Seating passed the comfort test first, with upholstered dining chairs and deep seats. The small details really matter, even down to switch and outlet covers or the subtle texture of the linen wallpaper in the dining room. This approach keeps small moments intentional. She adds, “Cody, being the artist he is, sketched two minimalist portraits of the family’s 144 • CH+D • Winter 2026
golden retriever and framed them as a quiet thank you. It was the perfect finishing touch for these built-ins.” Before handoff, the chairs, barstools, and sofa were cleaned and protected so the home started fresh. On reveal day, the homeowner returned from three months away and walked from room to room with happy tears, noticing the choices built for daily life. The kitchen cooks beautifully and entertains easily. The palette reflects the preserve and pool just beyond the glass. Northern soul meets coastal ease, and every decision puts comfort to work. ✴

Largeformat porcelain tile with dramatic veining, resembling Calacatta Gold marble, grounds the space and crawls up the shower walls, creating a mini wet room with a chic glass enclosure. For added depth, a hexagon-shaped porcelain tile covers the shower floor in material harmony.

ew England cottage meets West Coast bungalow is how Mark Bryan describes his Charleston home. The description fits perfectly. The rooms carry a relaxed
rhythm, part creative retreat, part gathering place, anchored by craftsmanship, warmth, and the unmistakable soul of a man whose life has always revolved around music. Mark, the founding guitarist and songwriter of Hootie & The Blowfish, helped shape one of the most enduring sounds of the 1990s. The band’s debut album, Cracked Rear View, remains one of the bestselling albums in U.S. history and helped define a generation of post-grunge pop rock. With hits like Only Wanna Be With You, Let Her Cry, and Hold My Hand, their songs became anthems of connection and optimism. After more than three decades, that same grounded energy still follows him home. When Mark isn’t touring, recording, or producing for other artists, he finds rhythm in his daily surroundings. “Home is where I recharge. It’s where ideas start to take shape,” he says. His Charleston residence, designed for both rest and creativity, mirrors his artistic process. It’s intentional, layered, and warm, with a flow that encourages inspiration.

A Coastal Lodge, Reimagined From the street, the refresh is understated yet deeply intentional. Clapboard siding lends timeless charm. Copper lanterns flicker at dusk. A haint blue beadboard ceiling brightens the porch, and a mahogany door with a transom window invites a long look inside. Because the home sits near tidal water, it was built elevated, and the base level gleams in Gamecocks garnet, a nod to Mark’s alma mater, the University of South Carolina, where Hootie & The Blowfish first formed. The renovation’s goal was to unify the home’s rustic personality with a clean, modern layout that better suited his lifestyle. “It was

important that the house felt natural and comfortable, not like a showpiece,” Mark says. The new design celebrates raw materials and handcrafted finishes. Exposed beams, reclaimed wood, and stonework recall the cabins and lodges Mark has admired while traveling across the country. “Touring gives you this appreciation for regional architecture. You start to notice what makes a place feel rooted,” he says. Inside, the atmosphere is relaxed and tactile. The design reads cozy with a rock-and-roll edge, blending natural textures with collected treasures. Memorabilia from decades of music and sports line the walls, each piece with a story. Mark lives here with his partner,
Izzy, and their four dogs, who add to the home’s sense of comfort and joy. Before the renovation, a wall divided the kitchen and living room, and a step down broke the flow. The goal was to open the space, strengthen the indooroutdoor connection, and make the layout feel fluid. Mark enlisted builder Chris Brassfield, who had worked on the home more than twenty years earlier. “We really did it right. There was a wall with an archway, and we removed it along with raising the stairs. Now it’s all connected. You’re everywhere at once in this room, and that’s what makes it feel alive,” he explains.
Everywhere At Once The kitchen hadn’t been updated in two decades, so functionality and form took priority. With guidance from the team at Cregger Showrooms, Mark upgraded every appliance to match the home’s new design. Mark shares, “Every piece needed to be replaced. I wanted everything to work seamlessly and look clean.” A BlueStar range top, Monogram oven and dishwasher, and a multi-function microwave that acts as a convection oven, toaster, and air fryer blend quietly into the custom cabinetry. A warming drawer and beverage cooler streamline entertaining. To the eye, paneled fronts hide the pantry, fridge, and freezer, creating a sleek, cohesive look. “My favorite piece is the Monogram microwave and stove. The tech was a lot at first, but now it’s second nature,” he says. Cabinetry designed and installed by Artistic Cabinets elevates the space without overpowering it. A stainless Kohler undermount sink with a matte black touchless faucet sits on the island side closest to the range wall for quick cleanup. The leathered quartzite island, durable yet elegant, anchors the room, while glossy white zelliege tile shimmers behind the range. Full-height cabinetry trimmed to the ceiling maximizes storage and finishes the room with architectural polish. The palette is soft and organic. Think grays, creams, and warm wood tones that echo the surrounding marsh. “I wanted to

feel connected to what’s outside,” he says. The kitchen’s open plan also allows music to flow easily from the living room to the back deck, where family dinners often stretch into jam sessions. In the adjacent dining area, a built-in bench with base drawers adds storage and softness. Between the two spaces hangs a portrait of Mark and his sister as children, a quiet reminder that family remains the emotional center of the home.
he adds. Personal touches animate every corner. On one wall, framed vinyls and guitars mark milestones in his career. There’s a Fender Telecaster from the early Hootie tours, a setlist from the band’s 2019 reunion, and a photo from his first solo show. Mark explains his collaborative connections, “It’s all part of the story. Every song, every tour, every friend that’s come through here adds something.”
Living Room Harmony If the kitchen is where function sings, the living room is where rhythm settles. A vaulted ceiling painted haint blue lifts the space. Beams and wall panels in varied wood tones add depth and texture, creating the lodge aesthetic Mark loves. A full-height stone fireplace topped with a reclaimed-wood mantle anchors the room, a visual cue that comfort comes first. Automatic roller shades control light and temperature while preserving views across the water. The room feels layered yet unfussy, like a well-loved song.
The Chuck Taylor Shoe Box Downstairs, creativity and nostalgia collide. A compact bar, known affectionately as the “ticket bar,” tells the story of four decades in music. Under a clear epoxy countertop, a grid of concert and game tickets stretches from edge to edge. “Since 1981, I’ve kept every ticket from every concert or game I went to. Until recently, they all lived in a Converse Chuck Taylor shoe box,” he laughs. The contents of this shoe box, sealed under glass, form a living archive of his adventures and lifelong passions, from Van Halen to Hootie tours to college football games.

bar’s design mirrors the rest of the home: handcrafted, simple, and full of meaning. The epoxy finish catches the light from custom sconces, giving the tickets a subtle glow at night. It’s both functional and poetic, much like his approach to music. A Rad Dad When asked about his favorite keepsakes, he points first to framed family photos. “The pictures of my kids matter more than any award,” he says. “The thing I’m most proud of is all three of my children, the relationships we 170 • CH+D • Winter 2026
have, and the lives they’re leading. That’s the best story right there.” Connection Over Perfection Around the corner, gold and platinum records hang humbly under soft lighting. The display could easily read as a victory lap, but Mark frames it differently. “It’s not about the trophies. It’s context. This is where the work happened,” he says, pointing to the now guest bedroom, which used to be his home studio before building a separate unit on the property. Album art, handwritten setlists, and portraits of his children share wall space with these impressive accolades. The
mix feels intentional, not curated, proof that legacy and love can occupy the same frame. Further down the hall, framed lyrics from his solo album Midlife Priceless hang near photos of him performing with Darius Rucker and the band in the early days. “Recording that solo album here at home was really special. It’s where I felt the freedom to create without pressure,” he says. That same studio independence has led to collaborations with artists across genres. Mark often works with young musicians, offering mentorship and studio time. “It’s nice to help people

for both solitude and collaboration. Inside, guitars and a piano stand ready. A built-in banquette holds notebooks and small gear. Wall treatments soften the sound, while wood repurposed from the property’s original shrimp shack adds texture and history.
find their sound,” he says, “When you’ve been doing this for as long as I have, you realize music is about connection, not perfection.” A Studio with Soul Just steps away from the main house, Mark’s recording studio sits tucked within the property, a separate dwelling featured previously in Charleston Home + Design (fall 2022). Built with warmth and precision, it’s an elevated space designed

Beneath the studio, a vibrant, verdant mural commissioned by Sarah Harris blends into the landscape, hinting at the creative life within. It’s where Popped took shape and where Mark continues to record and produce. “The energy in here is easy. I can start a song in the morning, step outside for air, hear the water, and come back inspired,” he says. The studio’s design fosters that rhythm, balancing technology with natural materials. Acoustic panels are wrapped in linen rather than foam, and custom lighting can shift from bright focus to soft glow. Rhythm and Reflection Water defines the home’s experience, where exterior design
plays a crucial role. Stainless steel cable rails withstand salt and wind at every level of the multifunctional outdoor living space. A two-story deck wraps the view and creates gathering zones from morning to evening. Off the primary suite, a private screened porch offers a quiet place to read or listen to the tide. A new staircase built near the outdoor kitchen leading to the upper level, links the ticket bar with indoor/ outdoor connection. When asked about how he maintains the balance of fame and solitude, Mark smiles. “Journaling, songwriting, and music allow me to express my inner self, unless I feel pent up. Then I just need some nature. That grounds me. You get a real sense of it when you’re out there,” he says, pointing up to his third-story overlook. Presence and Perspective Beyond music, golf has been a thread throughout Mark’s life, from childhood
to his years on stage. It’s a hobby and passion he shares with his dad, his kids, and his partner Izzy. “It was a good thing I liked to golf, or both of us did,” Izzy adds with a laugh. We actually fell in love at Monday After the Masters,” she shares. Mark nods and adds, “Golf is like a micro-lesson on life. You could have a great swing, but it doesn’t always mean it’s going to be a great shot. It teaches you to surrender a little. Even when you’re doing your best, some things are beyond your control. The game forces you to be present.” He recalls a trip to Scotland with his father and notes that Kiawah’s course feels closest to that style in the Lowcountry, just another reason why he calls Charleston home. Creatively Coasting As the sun drops behind the water, the house seems to settle into its own rhythm. The dogs curl up, Izzy laughs from the kitchen, and a few
quiet chords drift out from the studio. Everything about the home feels intentional, layered with stories but never weighed down by them. The house holds music, family, and memory without feeling crowded. Lodge notes ground the architecture. Thoughtful updates open the plan and connect it to water and sky. The result is a home that fits the person, which is the point of good design. Mark talks about presence the same way he talks about music. You show up, you do the work, and you listen for what belongs. The renovation follows that philosophy. Open the plan, honor the view, and give memory a place to live. The studio keeps the next verse close and his creativity flowing. Mark Bryan’s home is a welcome setting for family, friends, and the steady work of a creative life, going with the flow. ✴
