Many families aren’t making the most of their outdoor spaces because they just don’t fit their lifestyle. At REMARK, we create outdoor spaces that families can’t wait to enjoy - spaces where they can connect and make memories that last a lifetime.
Welcome Home
What is the definition of home? To me, it's where we retreat from the outside world and enter our own. How we define our lives can be characterized by the elements that make a house a home. If you’re eager to refresh your space in time for the new year, the fall issue is for you. It's packed with inspiring custom designs reflective of each homeowner and the expertise behind them.
On the cover, Charleston’s own Craig Conover invites readers into his recently completed renovation in Mount Pleasant. He details how he turned his dated colonial-style home into a cozy modern escape fit for friends and family. He shares where his business is headed and what we can expect to see from Sewing Down South this season.
The annual renovation feature showcases over seventy-five local projects, featuring before-and-after transformations as jarring as they are stunning. No time to renovate? No worries, we've also included plenty of low-effort yet high-impact design ideas to help rework your space, regardless of your constraints.
We also step inside former cover star and local fashion icon Andrea Serrano’s new Charleston home. Since we last saw her, her style has evolved, and so has her business. We learn how one influences the other and indulge in the vibrant pops of color and pattern that have come to define her fun aesthetic.
In Charleston, the realms of home and design collide with tradition, taste, and personal style. The fall issue is no different, and I hope you take it along with you as you plan your next home project.
Happy Home Designing!

Beauty in the Details
Meet the owner of B. Medical Aesthetics, a medical spa where personal maintenance is just as essential as home maintenance.
Why is personal maintenance essential?
Just as maintaining your home adds value over time, caring for yourself is an investment in your confidence and well-being. A bit of self-care can go a long way, helping you feel as good as you look. No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care. That’s my mantra.
Where did your medical career begin?
I received my Physician’s Assistant degree at the Medical University of South Carolina. I spent the early part of my career in neurosurgery and emergency medicine, teaching residents and students while honing my understanding of human anatomy.
How do you boost someone’s confidence?
For me, it’s not just about smoothing wrinkles or adding volume. It’s about helping people feel their best. Every face tells a unique story, just like every home. My goal is to enhance what’s already there, not change who they are. I want my patients to feel comfortable and supported.
Why aesthetics?
I’ve always loved teaching and learning. It’s why I chose medicine in the first place. Aesthetics gave me the chance to combine my clinical skills with my passion for creating confidence. I want my patients to feel more informed and confident when they leave my office. It’s not just about the results, it’s about the journey to self-compassion.
(above) With over fifteen years of experience as a Physician's Assistant, Blair Turnage combines clinical expertise with a passion for supporting patient confidence.

Dueling Furniture Dialogue
Paige Bishop and Alex Sienkiewicz of Luonto Furniture talk favorite styles, savvy spending, and pieces that fly off the showroom floor.
by
Paige Said: Alex Said:
The Liam Sectional is my personal favorite. It’s the kind of piece that invites you to unwind at the end of the day. The reversible chaise makes it super versatile for changing layouts, and the lumbar cushions offer just the right amount of support. It feels light and modern without sacrificing comfort.
What’s more luxurious than something made just for you? With the Saana Modular Sectional, you’re not limited to one feature. You can mix features such as a sleeper, recliner, and storage into a setup that fits your lifestyle.
Splurge on upholstery. It is what you see and touch every day. Luonto’s construction is consistently excellent, so whichever function you choose, you’re getting quality. But your fabric or leather sets the tone for the space. Select something you’ll enjoy living with.
Monika Queen is a classic for a reason. Its slim arms and compact frame make it ideal for smaller spaces, especially home offices or guest rooms that have limited space. The Nest function opens smoothly, and it looks polished in any fabric.
Favorite Product?
Preferred Luxury Function? Where to Save vs. Splurge? Best Seller?
For me, it’s Halti. It’s got every function you could want: adjustable neck rests, seat depth control, storage chaise, and a Full XL sleeper. When you're not sleeping on it, it turns into a triple chaise lounge. It’s one of those pieces that was designed for everyday life, with no compromises on comfort or style.
Power Level is my top function pick, offering luxury at your fingertips. Simply push a button, and your sofa transforms into a sleeper without the need for lifting or pulling. It’s smooth, quiet, and comfortable. Great design doesn’t need to make a fuss.
Prioritize function when allocating your budget. If you’re someone who hosts frequently, investing in a smooth, easy-to-use sleeper is worthwhile. Luonto’s singlemotion designs make setup effortless.
The Fantasy Queen is a sleeper with serious style. It offers a refined aesthetic while still delivering effortless functionality by opening in one swift motion. It’s comfortable enough for nightly use, yet sleek enough to anchor your living space.

Tricia Peterson of Island House Real Estate
After a three-year renovation, this historic property was thoughtfully restored to honor its past while embracing modern sensibilities. With the right connections, the brokerage brought new life to the home. “There’s a lot of due diligence when renovating a historic property, and our network as a luxury broker was key to getting it done,” Tricia Peterson says.

Living Room
This is Tricia’s favorite room, thanks to its sparkling chandeliers and original heart pine floors that celebrate the home’s history. “Opening up the ceiling made such a difference. It gives the space a grand feel,” she says. Green velvet sofas inject an unexpected pop of color, while a classic stone fireplace with an ornate mantle adds warmth and invites guests to linger. The living area flows seamlessly to the dining area and the kitchen. Bright white cabinetry and a glossy backsplash keep the kitchen feeling fresh and modern, while vintage-inspired green bar stools echo the playful hues of the lounge.
3.
Guest Bathroom
The choice of pink tile brings a fun, flirty energy to the space, while floor-to-ceiling tilework creates an immersive, spa-like retreat. “I was pretty adamant about having arched shower entries with no doors,” Tricia says. “I wanted every wall tiled, even some of the ceilings.” For a playful touch, the penny tile spells out “est. 1870,” dating the space to its original era. Funky brass lighting and unexpected brass legs supporting the countertop and basin replaced the traditional vanity cabinetry, completing the vintagemeets-modern vibe.
Powder Room 2.
The mosaic penny tile floor displays “Council & Tradd,” grounding this powder bath in the property’s rich history. Classic white subway tile ascends the walls, its crispness complementing the black-painted ceiling for a touch of drama. Dark cabinetry with fluted glass inserts brings subtle texture and an industrial edge, while a crystal chandelier softens the look. Polished brass fixtures, such as the faucet and the mirror frame, and the wall sconces, add elegance and warmth.
Business Headquarters 4.
Tricia envisioned a Great Gatsby meets French café vibe in the meeting space, brought to life with vintage nods, such as pushbutton light switches and rim locks. Tufted banquettes in deep blue velvet line the wall, brass café chairs add a Parisian touch, and emerald green leather bar stools anchor the cleverly lit marble bar. A dramatic black-and-white checkerboard marble floor and an ornate 1800s Murano crystal chandelier complete the speakeasy atmosphere.

Historic Textile Collaboration
Debby Gomulka collaborates with South Carolina’s historic Baxter Mill archive to create the Marrakech Textile Collection.
The Craftswoman
Debby, the creative force behind Provenance Lee Interiors, combines her background in fashion and interior design to create meaningful, eco-conscious pieces. Her latest work, the Marrakech Textile Collection, reflects her signature style—blending form, function, and sustainability with a sense of global heritage. Inspired by a client’s stories of childhood travel to Morocco, Debby infused the collection with the vibrant color, intricate pattern, and cultural richness that define Marrakech. Her thoughtful approach has earned praise from industry leaders, including
Dr. Henry Boyter Jr., Director of the Center for Environmentally Sustainable Textile/ Apparel at the NCSU College of Textiles, who commends her use of low-impact fibers to create beautiful, sustainable textiles.
The Process
Every element of the Marrakech Collection is rooted in intentionality. Produced locally in South Carolina, Debby partners with the historic Baxter Mill Archive—a onceabandoned textile mill now revived as a hub for sustainable craftsmanship. By keeping production local and using environmentally responsible materials, the collection minimizes carbon emissions and honors the legacy of textile making. This fall, Provenance Lee Interiors will unveil nine new colorways, each designed to channel Moroccan tradition through a modern lens.
The Craft
The Marrakech Collection spans both home goods and fashion scarves, capturing the intersection of timeless design and eco-luxury living. To mark the launch, Debby will host a fashion show in October featuring archival pieces from legendary New York designer Frank
the collection’s versatility, bridging classic fashion and forward-thinking interiors. Whether designing custom furnishings, architectural details, or window treatments, Debby approaches every project as a collaborative journey. For her, sustainability is more than a selling point—it’s a way of life, grounded in comfort, quality, and conscientious design.

Maximize Your Cabinet Storage
Custom pull-out drawers are designed to transform existing cabinets into the ultimate storage solution, regardless of the space's size.
The Setting:
Maximizing storage in a small kitchen can feel like an impossible puzzle, especially when faced with an army of utensils, small appliances, and cookware you’d rather not admit to owning. For this homeowner, finding space for everything from pantry staples to dinnerware meant getting creative. Art of Drawers was the solution. Following an in-home design consultation and a subsequent visit for precise measurements, the installation was completed in a single day. Known for their thoughtful, non-invasive approach, these cabinet experts turned the challenge of kitchen organization into a streamlined, stress-free process.
The Problem:
This particular kitchen came with its own set of challenges, being smaller than most. The team at Art of Drawers needed to devise a plan that would maximize every available surface and inch of storage, without making the space feel even more cramped. This meant approaching the design with precision and creativity, ensuring that each cabinet, drawer, and shelf served a purpose.
The Solution:
Art of Drawers used solid hardwoods for all drawer boxes, ensuring durability and resistance to moisture. They also used heavy-duty undermount drawer slides, which support up to 150 lbs and offer smooth, reliable performance. These design choices contribute to both the kitchen’s functionality and its high-end look. Each drawer features dovetail joints for durability and a refined look. Their custom divider options further enhance both functionality and aesthetics, giving homeowners beautiful and practical organization. One of the most impactful custom features was the drawer installed beneath the cooktop. This drawer was fully customized with a cut-out to navigate gas lines and electrical obstacles. It also included their pin divider system, which allows for tailored organization.

Protect & Preserve What Matters
This home pro offers expert guidance on wood staining and sealing, as well as tips for home painting and refinishing.
Why stain your fence or deck?
It’s an investment that should be protected beyond aesthetic enhancement. A quality stain shields fences and decks from UV damage, humidity, and everyday wear and tear. In Charleston, a finishing touch that gives your fence or deck a polished and long-lasting look.
PRO TIP:
It’s best to start protecting your wood with stain before construction, but Carolina Stain and Seal also specializes in repairs and restoration. Any exposed wood that isn’t sealed is entirely vulnerable.
Is it enough to simply stain the surface?
We focus on both the surface and the underlying structure, including stringers, support posts, and load-bearing elements.
Often, we partner with trusted specialists to repair wood rot and ensure everything is structurally sound before applying protection. Protecting a deck with compromised supports is pointless, so they evaluate every project thoroughly and guide homeowners on what’s needed to make their investment last.
PRO TIP:
Just as a termite inspection and bond protect your home from hidden threats, proper evaluation and care for your wood structures ensure they remain strong and long-lasting. Skipping this step is like leaving your investment unprotected.
Exterior color selection tips?
Homeowners often overlook an exterior color’s light reflective value (LRV). LRV measures how much light a color reflects, and it has a significant impact on longevity. A bright white
(above) This dark-stained fence not only protects the wood but also adds a rich, elevated finish to the home’s exterior. (opposite) The deck and gate are stained in the same finish for a cohesive aesthetic.
Stained Fence

reflects nearly all light, while a dark brown absorbs it, making it prone to faster fading. When selecting a color, it’s essential to strike a balance between personal preference and durability.
PRO TIP:
Take the time to research and understand the light reflective value of these paint colors. It will pay off when you don’t have to repaint your home in ten years. Products like Emerald Rain Refresh by Sherwin-Williams enable darker colors to maintain higher reflectivity, combining the look homeowners desire with the longevity required.

What's your secret to success?
While we take pride in delivering beautiful results, what truly sets us apart is our commitment to doing things the right way, even when it’s the harder path. What I mean by that is even if we encounter issues a homeowner might not want to hear, we address them honestly. We won’t take on a project if it can’t be done correctly. Our strong customer service is another key factor. With dedicated project managers, we oversee quality, coordinate subcontractors, and guide homeowners through the process by setting clear expectations and schedules. Above all, we’re straightforward.

How do you go from concept to construction?
“ “ “ “
For more information, call Citadel Enterprises, Inc. at (843) 884-4303 or visit citadelenterprises.com.
We start by collaborating closely with the client to understand their vision, then create a detailed architectural design using AutoCAD. From there, the timeline depends on where the client is in the process. If plans need to be created and permitted, large additions or custom builds typically take about two to three months before breaking ground, depending on revisions. If a client already has engineered plans, we can often provide an estimate within a week and move to permitting in less than two months. Our goal is to guide clients smoothly from concept to construction, ensuring the design reflects their vision while meeting all practical and regulatory requirements.

Describe the ‘Wedding Cake House’ project:
“ “
The new home on the site of the former ‘Wedding Cake House’ on Sullivan’s Island will be a two-story residence that epitomizes coastal living. Soaring twelve-foot ceilings and a thoughtful layout maximize its extraordinary setting. A glass wall at the entry frames Breach’s Inlet, while the main living areas capture sweeping 180-degree Atlantic views. Expansive accordion-style doors invite breezes and sunlight, and impact-rated glass ensures protection. Built on a fortified foundation reinforced with three-footthick concrete and twenty tons of steel rebar, the home blends the romance of island living with modern engineering; it’s a place built to stay.

BETTER BY DESIGN
Tell us about the project's architectural highlights.
Personal style was just as important as functionality. In the primary bathroom, a coordinated soaking tub and walk-in shower, both floored in matching tile, create a serene, cohesive retreat. A custom vanity wall with built-in shelving completes the space. To introduce warmth and dimension throughout, tongue-and-groove ceilings were added in the primary suite and main living area, offering a subtle contrast to the clean, simple walls. After removing the interior walls, a large island became the focal point. The custom wet bar extends from the kitchen into the living room, making it easy for the homeowner to serve guests.
Biggest challenge?
With 1,107 square feet to work with, every design decision had to serve dual purposes. The original layout held promise, but improving flow was key. The kitchen was reimagined to include a spacious island while preserving an open-concept feel. A subtle shift in ceiling height between the kitchen and living area created a natural transition, further defined by a stained tongueand-groove finish that adds warmth and visual depth. To reclaim valuable square footage, the fireplace wall was reframed to accommodate a slimline insert, helping us gain a full 18 inches of living space.
Favorite part of this design?
While each space has its unique character, what we love most about the architectural design is how seamlessly the spaces connect, creating the feel of a much larger home. The thoughtful flow, purposeful function, and cohesive style strike a balance between individuality and unity throughout.
Describe your business philosophy.
Great design is the cornerstone of any successful renovation. That’s why we take a thoughtful, collaborative approach. By working closely with clients from the start to fine-tune layouts, select materials, and identify potential challenges before construction begins, we can ensure a successful renovation. A thorough planning phase leads to a more accurate budget, a streamlined timeline, and a finished space that’s as functional as it is beautiful. By guiding clients through material choices that align with their lifestyle and goals, we ensure the result feels intentional, livable, and lasting.

BUILDER:
Tommy Priester
PRIESTER’S CUSTOM CONTRACTING, LLC
What’s your building philosophy?
At Priester’s Custom Contracting, LLC, we believe that building or remodeling a home should be an enjoyable and stress-free experience. Our philosophy is centered on exceptional customer service, clear communication, and hands-on project management. We keep our clients continuously informed, whether they live locally or are from out of town. With daily site visits and a commitment to detail, we ensure that each job site runs smoothly and efficiently.
Biggest challenge of this project?
Building on this waterfront lot came with a unique challenge. It was tucked in behind several established homes. The goal was to build a home that not only blended seamlessly with the existing neighborhood but also maximized the stunning water views that make this property so special. The result is a home that feels both functional and retreat-like; a peaceful sanctuary that complements its surroundings while embracing the beauty of waterfront living.
Favorite space?
One of the most cherished spaces in this home is the back porch, designed to capture the beauty of its waterfront setting. The cozy outdoor fireplace creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, while the comfortable seating makes it easy to unwind and enjoy the scenery year-round. The goal was to make this a seamless extension of the home where family and friends can gather for years to come.
Must-have feature in every home?
For us, the one must-have feature in every home is natural light. Large, well-placed windows not only enhance the beauty of a space but also make it feel open, warm, and inviting. Natural light transforms how a home is lived in. It highlights the home's details, creates an uplifting atmosphere, and helps connect the indoors with the outdoors. No matter the size or style of the home, thoughtful use of natural light is essential in creating a space that feels comfortable, ageless, and truly like home.

INTERIOR DESIGNER:
Leila Muller
POPPY + SHAE DESIGN CO.
What makes this project unique?
This project was almost entirely designed virtually, with the client granting me full creative autonomy. The homeowner and her son never set foot in their new home until the renovation was complete. That absence made the reveal all the more special. It was a rare opportunity in life to be truly surprised. Transforming a home into a joyful, unexpected gift leaves a lasting impression and forges a deep emotional connection between the client and their space.
What was your favorite space?
My favorite space in this home is the primary bathroom, which carries the coastal glam vibe with light-toned cabinetry and striking light fixtures. The large-scale checkered floors steal the show, their mix of matte and glossy finishes adds a romantic, visually striking touch that flows into the walk-in closet.
How did you ensure a sense of cohesion?
The client arrived with three cherished fabric swatches from her previous home, setting the tone for the design. I layered in a coastal sensibility, a “Serena & Lily meets Restoration Hardware” aesthetic I often embrace when given full creative freedom. To create cohesion, I wove shades of green into each room.
What is your design philosophy?
My goal is to transform the often-stressful process of renovation into one that feels joyful and inspiring. My design style is best described as “comfy coastal glam.” In most of my projects, including this one, clients place their trust in my vision, giving me complete autonomy to shape their space. Rooted deeply in my faith, I see my work as more than just design; it’s an opportunity to be a blessing to those I serve.

A Palette of Personality
With carefully chosen furnishings, custom upholstery from a local showroom, and guidance from one of their top designers, this new build instantly felt like a lived-in home.

Project by Southeastern Galleries
by Ashley Rowell | Photography by Kelly Parrish
The original home, built in 1980, was demolished upon purchase in 2020. The homeowners chose to start fresh with a new build. Allison, the homeowner, was no stranger to interior design. She had designed her family’s previous homes in both Kiawah and Philadelphia, carrying with her meaningful pieces that told the story of her life. Her entryway features treasured pieces, from a mirror gifted by her children’s preschool to a hand-carved Indonesian table from her mother.
While searching online for a specific piece of furniture, Allison stumbled across the Southeastern Galleries website, and instantly felt drawn to designer Melissa Moore. “She was unique, and I’m a unique, colorful person. That’s exactly how I wanted my home to feel,” says Allison.
Allison walked into the showroom with her design plans in hand. From the moment the two met, there was a creative spark. What started as a search for chairs, replacements for a beloved setup from her previous home, soon blossomed into a full-scale collaboration. Allison explains, “I had a strong vision and a lot of existing pieces. But I needed help with fabrics, window treatments, and layering everything together.” Melissa Moore, like her fellow design
consultants at Southeastern Galleries, brought a deep understanding of the showroom’s extensive collection of prestigious brands. Many of the furnishings and fabrics woven throughout this home’s existing furnishings were thoughtfully sourced from these trusted lines.
The kitchen and dining areas effortlessly blend comfort and sophistication. At the breakfast nook, Sherrill ottomans invite casual gatherings, while sleek Woodbridge counter stools provide style at the island. The dining room is anchored by Palacek chairs and a curated mix of textiles from S. Harris, Vervain, Hickory White, and Lillian August, creating a layered, polished look.
Continuing into the family room, the elevated sophistication of the home carries through in every hue and texture. Gabby barstools line the custom bar, inviting conversation, while plush Palacek chairs, originally intended for the bedroom but relocated for their striking beauty, offer comfort and style. A rug by Due Process adds texture, complementing a curated palette of fabrics from S. Harris, Vervain, Hickory White, and Lillian August. The bookshelves, styled by the homeowner with color-themed selections, reflect her playful creativity and love of color. “The living space was imagined and assembled around the

Vervain fabric from the sofa,” Allison explains, underscoring the thoughtful cohesion of the design.
The bedrooms throughout the home showcase a seamless blend of classic elegance and playful accents. The Somerset Bay beds anchor two bedrooms, paired with thoughtfully chosen rugs from Fibreworks and Design Materials, while fabrics from Thibaut and carefully curated pillows including Eastern Accents and Lexington add texture and personality. In her daughter's bedroom, Stroheimupholstered chairs, Palacek lighting, and a Fibreworks rug create a layered, sophisticated retreat. The hallways and staircases are elevated with Prestige Mills and Radici runners, guiding the eye to the thirdfloor bedroom, where Lexington
furnishings and Eastern Accents bedding complete a very cohesive, inviting atmosphere.
When asked how she works so seamlessly with the homeowner, Melissa explains, “I like to think of myself as a design psychologist. I don’t stick to one style, I create spaces that reflect my client’s personality.”
It was important to extend the home’s design onto the screened porch without interrupting the view. The screened porch continues the home’s relaxed vibe with Summer Classics furniture, Stroheim outdoor fabrics, and a coordinating rug. ‘The river is the art,’ says Melissa.

the loss of her mother. “She always helped me design my homes,” she says. “We would try out accessories, move things around, and say, ‘hmm… no, maybe it belongs over there.” Allison pauses, then smiles. “Without her, the process felt more overwhelming. But when I met Melissa, I knew I had found someone else I could tinker with.” More than a furniture showroom, Southeastern Galleries’ in-house designers like Melissa transform interior design into a truly memorable experience. ✴

Tailored Living
A home built for family, elevated by detail, and designed to last for generations.
by
With ten wide–open acres in the Lowcountry, the possibilities felt endless for its owners. Tucked inside an equestrian neighborhood in Ravenel, the land quickly became the perfect spot for their dream home. The homeowners had just one request: every detail must be centered around family.
Through kismet, the homeowners were introduced to JacksonBuilt Custom Homes. When they arrived at their first meeting, they brought along a set of plans they had discovered online, something that captured the general feel they were after. “We saw the potential, but it needed to be reimagined so the spaces would flow and function properly,” says Richard Jackson of JacksonBuilt Custom Homes. To
bring that vision to life, the team partnered with John Romano of Drafted Architecture, who thoughtfully crafted a new design that struck the perfect balance between beauty and livability.
With the plans finalized, JacksonBuilt’s in-house designer, Mary-Margaret Glass, began envisioning each space. “Our guiding principle was to blend as many materials as possible that evoke a sense of history with new construction,” Mary-Margaret explains. The result is a richly layered home, where every detail was thoughtfully considered to create warmth, character, and a timeless sense of charm.
These clients were relocating from Florida to be closer to their children and their grandchildren, so it's no

surprise that this home build would be family-centric. “We really love the look of a brighter color scheme, like what you often see in coastal homes,” the homeowner shares. But once they considered the natural setting, towering pines and wide-open pastures, the palette shifted. The wife’s favorite color duo, blue and green, still found its way inside, showing up in thoughtful moments like the primary suite, where a soft eggshell blue leads into a Venetian plaster bathroom awash in deeper blue tones. Paired with dolomite marble floors and polished nickel fixtures, the effect is subtle yet full of personality. But throughout the home, the palette leans tonal, grounded by muddier undertones that reflect the surrounding landscape.
In this home, the kitchen isn’t just a place to cook; it’s the heart of the house, designed for gathering, lingering,
and sharing meals. To set the tone, artist Emily Pope Harris created custom plasterwork that extends from the range hood to the ceiling, giving the space a soft, hand-finished warmth. Overhead, reclaimed beams sourced from Pennsylvania add a touch of history and rustic character, complementing the elegance of the La Cornue range beautifully. Custom cabinetry by JCH Cabinets, paired with an island topped in quartz from MVP Granite Countertops, offers both function and refinement. Polished fixtures from Ferguson Home and statement lighting from Visual Comfort Co. complete the look.
Just beyond the kitchen lies the scullery, outfitted with blue-hued cabinetry and accented by unlacquered brass plumbing that will patina gracefully over time. A hidden door conceals the pantry, so cleverly tucked

away that you might miss it. Thoughtful details extend beyond the main living areas, from the tumbled bluestone pavers in the foyer and powder room to the back porch, where motorized screens frame an outdoor kitchen and fireplace that overlooks a sparkling pool by Blue Haven Pools & Spas.
This marked JacksonBuilt Custom Homes’ first project to include a horse stable, an element that brought an entirely new set of considerations to the process. “While we’re well-versed in custom home construction, stables have their own intricacies. We had to become fluent in the unique requirements of equestrian spaces, working closely with suppliers and specialists to get every detail right,” explains Richard. It’s that commitment to learning, adapting, and delivering that truly sets JacksonBuilt Custom Homes apart. ✴

Coastal Twist
Inside a custom home with traditional structure, coastal whimsy, and retro charm where a local team crafted a highly personal space where every room carries its own unique perspective.
Although every room in this custom home has its own unique character, it reads as a cohesive whole. Designer Shay Patterson of Riverside Designers began at the architectural planning stage with Vinyet Architects and the builders of Lowcountry Premier Custom Homes. She then guided the project through finish selections, furnishings, fabrics, wallpaper, and installation. The brief called for expressive rooms that reflect the homeowners’ art collection and heirloom pieces while honoring a traditional framework. The solution was a disciplined palette, measured repetition of materials, and furniture plans that prioritize function and flow.
Shay describes the home’s design intention as layered and livable. Traditional bones anchor the house, while coastal
notes, playful patterns, and a hint of retro keep the mood fresh and inviting. Color is purposeful rather than loud, surfacing in unexpected moments that tie spaces together without repetition. Texture carries equal weight. Natural fibers, tailored upholstery, and tactile wallcoverings add depth and warmth.
Performance drove decisions for cabinet construction and durable finishes suited to Lowcountry life. Because Riverside Designers touched every inch, the team could choreograph continuity. In the formal living and dining rooms, refined silhouettes and collected antiques blend seamlessly with crisp millwork and modern lighting. The pool house apartment leans into vintage references with cheerful color and streamlined forms. Custom cabinetry by Wellsford sets the tone for organization and

longevity, while countertops fabricated by MVP Granite Countertops deliver subtle movement and a durable work surface. Melcer Tile introduces scale and texture in bathrooms and utility spaces. Window treatments by Threadhouse temper light and add tailored softness alongside appliances sourced from Ferguson Home.
The greatest challenge was also the guiding opportunity. Multiple styles had to blend in a way that felt intentional and unmistakably personal. Riverside’s answer was to establish a throughline of proportion, finish continuity, and rhythm. Repeating a handful of finishes across rooms creates familiarity, while shifting pattern, tone, and silhouette gives each space its own voice. Strategic furniture layouts ensure rooms function effectively during daily routines and can be easily expanded to accommodate entertaining guests.
It was a long arc from concept to completion. Over roughly two and a half years, Riverside partnered
closely with the builder and architect to maintain the vision while refining the details that make a house feel complete. Patterson’s favorite takeaway is the personality that emerges in every vignette, from the formal front-of-house spaces to the spirited pool house. “I love getting to know my clients, their families, and how they live and entertain. It is rewarding to see their style come through in the selections,” she says.
That client-first approach is part of Riverside Designers’ DNA. The firm is celebrating fifty years in business this year. Patterson interned with the company in college and has spent over two decades shaping homes that are as individual as the people who live in them. “Every home we design is unique and infused with each client’s individual style,” Shay shares.✴

South Battery Revival
This homeowner and designer complete their third historic project together, built on trust and a shared love for restoring old homes with modern sensibility.
With sweeping views of White Point Gardens and the Charleston Harbor, the historic Robert Murray House stands as a jewel of South Battery. Built in 1802, the estate underwent a transformative renovation in 2024 led by homeowner Kelly Sepcic Pfeil of Carolina Girl Renovations.
Charged with breathing new life into the interiors while honoring the home’s legacy, Charleston Cabinets, Inc. played a central role in redefining the kitchen and baths with tailored cabinetry and thoughtful design solutions.
Charleston Cabinets, Inc. designer Niki Komorek approached the project with an eye for color, flow, and functionality,
no small feat in a historic home with complex structural quirks.
“The kitchen had been added onto over the years and was located in what was once the ‘hyphen’ connecting the main home to the carriage house,” explains Niki. This unique layout meant plumbing and electrical systems were outdated and not to code, which required a complete reconfiguration. To accommodate modern, high-end appliances and improve circulation, the team adjusted the island placement and created custom cabinetry in a soft sage green.

upgrades while maintaining the visual continuity.
One of the most rewarding transformations took place in the primary bathroom, which previously shared cramped quarters with a laundry room. The redesign relocated the laundry to the first floor, making way for a serene retreat with furniture-style vanities, a soaking tub, a walk-in shower, a water closet, and hisand-her sinks. Every bathroom in the home was reimagined, and an additional full bath was added to the second-floor front bedroom.
The owner's vision for a vibrant blend of Charleston charm and Palm Beach playfulness, came to life through curated finishes,
layered textures, and a palette of soft pinks and greens. This was her third historic renovation with Charleston Cabinets, Inc., a testament to their longstanding collaboration. “Kelly calls us the Dream Team,” Niki says. “Our relationship with her is built on trust and a shared love for restoring old homes with a modern sensibility.”
The cabinetry throughout the home was crafted using KraftMaid Vantage products. Countertops were fabricated by MVP Granite, with materials sourced from Vitoria International. Charleston Cabinets collaborated with builder Irwin Built, Meadors Architects, and interior designer Jack Kennedy to bring the project to
life. Tile selections from Red Rock Tileworks and Garden State Tile, along with lighting from Visual Comfort Co., add refined detail. A Classic Touch Draperies provided window treatments, and paint finishes were selected from Farrow & Ball.
From the double wraparound piazzas to the restored Loutrel Briggs–designed gardens and jewel-like plunge pool, the Robert Murray House is once again a showpiece of Southern elegance, updated with modern comfort and timeless craftsmanship. ✴

Beyond Residential
A celebration of local talent, timeless charm, and the power of creative collaboration at 87 Wentworth.
Hidden within the historic fabric of downtown Charleston lies a striking transformation at Salon Liv. This woman-owned small business has been reimagined with intention, heart, and a distinctly Charleston spirit. Led by interior designer Kristen Mills, founder of Inch Projects, and supported by a collective of thirteen local creatives, the expansion and redesign reads as a manifesto for community-driven design.
The building at 87 Wentworth Street dates back to approximately 1750 and is among the oldest surviving houses on the former Glebe lands in Charleston. The twostory structure retains its stair hall wainscoting and six fireplaces. Lime-washed walls honor the age and texture of the envelope, while contemporary lighting brings clarity and a sense of lift to the circulation paths. The design allows
the architecture to speak and adds a fresh layer that feels current without erasing the past.
A signature artwork by rising Charleston artist Demetrius Bing sets the tone. The piece introduces a confident palette that threads through the salon, appearing as controlled moments of color within a calm, neutral base. Suspended mirrors create clean sightlines and amplify natural and ambient light. They also free the floor, which supports graceful movement and an intuitive client flow.
Furniture is primarily vintage, edited, and revived with luxe, performance-minded textiles that can withstand daily use. Patterned wallcoverings introduce depth and rhythm, particularly in corridors and styling bays. Every surface tells a story, from the reflective finishes that catch Charleston’s shifting light to the tactile materials that invite touch. The

mix of old and new amplifies the salon’s hospitality, which was a clear priority for the owner.
Locally sourced materials and products anchor the narrative. Celadon contributes layered furnishings, while Sherwin-Williams provides the paint framework that unifies the palette. Fabric and wallcovering partners include Schumacher and Romo. Plumbing and hardware selections from Moluf's Supply and Melcer Tile deliver function with quiet refinement. Local showroom and design house Iola Modern rounds out the mix with contemporary accents that keep the mood crisp and fresh.

which underscores the collaborative spirit at the heart of the project. Mills describes the process, “Salon Liv’s new design is not only about aesthetics. It is about collaboration. It is about showing what is possible when talented locals work with shared purpose and real passion.”
The result is tactile, cinematic, and unmistakably Charleston. Every decision reinforces the value of hiring specialists, from painters and textile curators to tile experts and furniture refinishers. The project demonstrates that great interiors are built by teams who understand context and craft. At Salon Liv, heritage and innovation meet in service to an experience that welcomes clients, supports staff, and celebrates a citywide creative network. ✴

Modernized with Timeless Charm
This modern residence was reimagined with a traditional twist, blending architectural updates and refined interiors into a seamless whole-home transformation.
When a contemporary-style home no longer suited its owners’ vision, they sought a transformation rooted in tradition. Classic Remodeling & Construction was chosen as a design/ build firm known for guiding homeowners through every phase of renovation, from initial design concepts and finish selections to engineering, permitting, and construction. The homeowners’ wish list included updating the exterior to a more traditional style, enlarging the kitchen, and reconfiguring several interior spaces to maximize function and flow.
The result is a complete refresh that feels timeless, welcoming, and meticulously planned. On the exterior, Classic Remodeling replaced the siding
and windows, updated the ground-level skirting, and added a striking front porch. A small front addition provided the extra space needed for a new walk-in pantry and laundry room on the main level. At the same time, upstairs, the reconfigured primary suite now features a spacious bathroom and a generous walk-in closet. Bathrooms and finishes throughout the home also received thoughtful updates, creating a cohesive aesthetic.
“The best designs come from real conversations. When I understand how someone lives, that's when all the details fall into place,” says Classic Remodeling’s designer Christy Ammerman. The renovation relied on trusted suppliers and partners, including Greenfield Cabinetry, Barefoot Floors for hardwood

Kitchen appliances, including a Bertazzoni range and hood, a Thermador refrigerator, an XO microwave and beverage fridge, and a Bosch dishwasher, were provided by Ferguson Home and Plugs Appliances. Additional project partners included MCC Electrical, Paint Experts (using Sherwin-Williams finishes), Cruz Landscaping, Southern Lumber & Millwork Corp., and more.
Like many renovation projects, this one brought surprises once walls were opened, but the team addressed the repairs without significant design changes. The project timeline also reflected its history, initially
discussed in 2020; it was paused due to the pandemic before resuming in 2023 and concluding in June 2025.
From the street, the home’s new traditional façade and welcoming entry porch make it nearly unrecognizable from its former self. Inside, modern conveniences and classic details blend effortlessly, proving that with the right team, a home can evolve to reflect both personal style and enduring design. ✴

Flooring That Lasts
These flooring experts installed a surface designed to handle everything from storage to utility with ease.
Flooring is often the last detail homeowners consider, especially in the garage.
Function tends to outweigh style, with many assuming they must sacrifice aesthetics for durability. But bare concrete, prone to chipping and cracking, hardly fits the bill for a space that works as hard as today’s garages.
For this project, the homeowners needed flooring that could handle the weight of a car and double as a surface tough enough for an at-home gym, even able to withstand the accidental
drop of a dumbbell without damage.
Coastal Stone Flooring delivered the perfect solution: a practical, durable, and visually polished surface that elevates the garage from basic utility to a true extension of the home.
Like every Coastal Stone Flooring project, this garage floor was crafted from hand-selected, all-natural river stones. Blended with a patentpending epoxy and hand-troweled over the existing concrete, the finish not only seals the surface but also allows it to breathe, letting moisture pass through with ease. The result is
a floor that outperforms an ordinary garage floor.
“People aren’t looking for traditional flooring anymore,” Luke Wilson of Coastal Stone Flooring states. Unlike concrete, it won’t pit or crack, and unlike epoxy paint, it won’t bubble, chip, or peel. Instead, it remains beautifully resilient, year after year.

gym. The finish leaves no standing water, no tracked-in dirt or grime, and even flooding can’t compromise its durability. Perfectly suited to the Lowcountry’s humid climate, it offers both safety and resilience while maintaining a clean and functional space all year round.
Because of the project’s size, the installation required more preparation than most, taking four days from start to finish. Typically, however, Coastal Stone floors can be completed in just one day, and you can walk on the surface within twentyfour hours. For garage, driveway, or other outdoor applications, it’s
recommended to wait seven days before driving on the floor.
Maintenance is simple. With proper care, including periodic cleaning and an occasional top coat if the shine begins to dull, the floor will remain strong, durable, and beautiful for a lifetime. To make the process even easier, homeowners receive full care guidelines with their contract, and the Coastal Stone team is always available for support.
The homeowner sought a one-anddone flooring solution, one that was permanent, beautiful, and worryfree for their garage and at-home
gym. With close to a million square feet installed in the Lowcountry, the Coastal Stone Flooring team brought their expertise to the project, ensuring that once this floor was in place, it would never need to be redone. The result: a durable surface that not only meets practical needs but also delivers a finish the homeowner truly loves. ✴

Tailored Living
From the interiors to the outdoors, this four-month renovation redefined the existing home with elegance and ease.
Spanning four months, a local building company transformed this home with a sweeping renovation. Elegant updates touched nearly every corner, from the powder room and entry hall to the fireplace, kitchen, bar, and primary suite. The project went beyond interiors, adding an elevated pool framed by an IPE wood deck and cable railing, along with a new outdoor kitchen and sauna. Due to precise planning and seamless execution, the homeowners experienced minimal disruption and can now savor their marsh-front views from a home that now matches their lifestyle.
These homeowners envisioned a residence that would better reflect their way of life. Partnering with CMG
Custom Homes, LLC, they set out to transform their traditional house into a modern, highly functional retreat. The goal was to create a seamless flow between indoors and out, with lightfilled interiors opening to a welcoming outdoor space, perfect for gathering with family and friends.
From the earliest stages of planning through final delivery, CMG’s team collaborated closely with the homeowners to elevate every interior with a refined and cohesive design. At the heart of the home, the kitchen strikes a balance between modern simplicity and timeless detail. both a functional workspace and a gathering point. Above the range, a custom wood-paneled hood rises dramatically against a backdrop of tiled walls, while sleek, veined countertops bring subtle depth to the space.
Just beyond, a bar area finished with mosaic tile and open shelving expands the home’s entertainment potential. In the living room, a striking fireplace serves as a centerpiece of luxury, its surround crafted from natural stone and crowned by a substantial mantel. A flat-screen television mounted above integrates modern living with classic architectural presence, uniting comfort and sophistication.
“We brought the client’s vision to life through creative design solutions and high-quality craftsmanship. With a skilled team and a commitment to excellence, we delivered a comprehensive project that respected deadlines, budget, and design expectations,” Rich says.
CMG Custom Homes carried the transformation outdoors, where an elevated pool with scenic lighting frames sweeping views. This pool was designed to be both functional and visually striking. The IPE wood deck and cable railing provide a warm yet modern aesthetic, while ensuring safety without obstructing the view. In the evening, the integrated lighting creates a sophisticated outdoor ambiance, inviting guests to stay longer.
A high-end outdoor kitchen was seamlessly integrated into the existing space, offering ample room for entertaining and the convenience of cooking without stepping inside. To complete the retreat, an outdoor sauna was thoughtfully positioned within the landscape, delivering a sense of tranquility while blending naturally into its surroundings.
The project presented its greatest challenge in scope. Yet challenges are where CMG Custom Homes excels. They

Builder Rich Durik’s precise project management and consistent communication with the homeowner were key to completing a project of this scale within such a short time frame. The homeowner shared, “This exceeded our expectations. Their attention to detail is incredible.” ✴

A New Take on Traditional
Aimed at maximizing storage while maintaining a traditional allure, a local firm designed custom-built storage to complement existing antiques in this primary bedroom.
What initially sparked this primary bedroom overhaul was what it had always been missing: closet space. Of course, built-ins are what the mind might think of next, except this couple was certain it might end up looking like a set of cabinets.
Luckily, their trusted interior designer, Terri Caban Baldwin of CHD Interiors, explained how she might make their wants and needs align with a custom-built solution. Terri’s apt renaming of them, “armoires,” made this project one that the homeowners could look forward to with their traditional sensibilities. “The process was
completely turn-key for a brandnew bedroom ready for the clients when they returned from vacation,” she adds.
Working alongside a custom cabinet maker, Terri used her design sketches to guide the process. Inspired by antique wardrobes, the new built-ins needed to accommodate both his-and-hers spaces, as well as a built-in audio system that wouldn’t compromise the entire design.
“We asked David Rust of Artis Construction to collaborate with our team to handle all the constructionrelated aspects of the project. They also had skilled cabinet makers and Terri Caban Baldwin of CHD Interiors

finish carpenters who dealt with the construction of the armoires. It was beautifully done,” she shares. It was from here that the rest of the bedroom design would unfold.
“The clients had two antique furniture pieces as well as some French wall panels. We incorporated all of it into the design to maintain and update their traditional aesthetic,” Terri says. A color story drawn from existing pieces inspired the soft palette of whites, creams, and blues. “We carried the colors through the rug, bed linens, and onto the window treatments to marry the new furniture with the existing décor. It was due to the soft color palette that this space balances fresh and new with timeworn and antique elements,” she explains. ✴

Durability Meets Drama
Rich color, bold texture, and unique lighting create a striking in-home bar.
In-home bars are no longer an afterthought in a custom home, but rather a focal point for entertaining and a reflection of personal style. For this striking space, the homeowners turned to AGM Imports of Charleston in search of a surface that would deliver both performance and presence. The result? A showstopping installation of Avocatus quartzite in a leathered finish, fabricated by Granite Depot of Charleston.
Sourced directly from AGM’s North Charleston warehouse, the deep green Avocatus quartzite offered multiple slabs to choose from, allowing the homeowners to hand-select the piece with the most
dynamic veining. The decision to finish the stone with a leathered texture enhanced its natural drama, adding depth and a tactile, matte surface that resists fingerprints and glare, making it ideal for hardworking utility spaces, such as a bar.
This richly textured material was used on the countertop, the base of the island, and the backsplash, wrapping the entire bar in a cohesive and compelling natural stone. More than just beautiful, quartzite is also one of the most rigid and durable stones available, making it resistant to scratches, heat, and stains, qualities that make it a practical yet luxurious choice for an athome entertaining space.

PROJECT FILES
The design doesn’t stop at stone. Framed by custom open shelving and warm metallic tones, the space also includes a striking personal detail: a portrait of the homeowners’ beloved dog, cleverly incorporated into the center of the bar’s back wall. It’s a stylish nod to the couple’s personality and a heartwarming conversation piece that perfectly complements the bold materials.
“In-home bars have grown in popularity and are a serious conversation piece for homeowners who love to entertain,” says Melanie Richardson, Branch Manager at AGM
Imports. “My favorite part of this project was seeing everything come together in the end and how happy the homeowners were with the finished project. I also love how they incorporated their sweet doggy into the project—the perfect final touch. They are enjoying their countertops as it has become quite the conversation piece,” she adds. ✴

Family-Centric Design
For a family relocating to Charleston, this local designer delivered a thoughtfully curated, move-in-ready home.
For this family relocating from New York to Charleston, it was essential that their newly renovated house felt updated, personalized, and ready to serve as a modern coastal retreat where their two young children could grow up. These homeowners didn’t see their renovated home until their movein day, having placed complete trust in Andrea Dussault, owner of Striped Lemon Design. The result is a testament to the Striped Lemon Design team’s ability to deliver a fresh, coastal-inspired home on a tight timeline, thoughtfully designed to be both family-friendly and timeless as the family ages.
Andrea and her design team began to work with their contractors to personalize this marsh-front Daniel
Island home. The design was deliberate. The home is full of great furniture and accessories, and the mood is light and inviting. Upon stepping inside, guests are welcomed by a long, elegant corridor where flow and balance take center stage. Original architectural details, like the classic trim, were thoughtfully preserved to honor the home’s character. Andrea Dussault tells, “It’s about asking: what deserves to stay, and how can it complement the story we’re telling?” The rug complements the side table, which is flanked by two chairs with reeded wood accents. Vibrant throw pillows bring depth to the design while complementing the custom local artwork.

as a gathering area for the family with minimal clutter. The American Leather sofas sourced from Iola Modern feature luxurious white leather upholstery, keeping the space bright. The absence of drapery was a deliberate design choice intended to preserve the expansive marshfront view and maximize natural light. A sleek, modern electric fireplace from WilliamSmith Fireplaces and a custom low-mounted recessed TV, both framed by shiplap, serve as the focal point of the living space. Hints of blue in the pillows and accessories support the theme of modern, coastal charm, while cohesively blending the space with the dining area.
"For this home, it was all about warm, organic layers that feel clean and calm, bringing the outside in, and giving this family a place to gather, grow, and enjoy life by the marsh," says Andrea.
The dining room flows effortlessly into the living area, unified by striking Rebecca Atwood wallpaper that adds texture and echoes the blue accents beyond. A stunning light fixture by Currey & Company anchors the space. This is a subtle detail that reflects the family-focused heart of the home.
At the end of the hallway, the home office was designed to feel fresh and
calm with the homeowner’s Zoom calls in mind. It needed to have a polished and professional backdrop. Andrea created a bold ceiling moment using Rebecca Atwood’s Hatchmarks wallpaper in a green crisscross pattern, while keeping the walls neutral for balance. The trim and doors were color-drenched in a soothing green pulled from the wallpaper, adding depth without distraction. An organic wood desk and chair echo the warm wood tones found in the serene office space. ✴

A Revival on Folly Beach
This Folly Beach cottage endured storms, neglect, and nearly a century of change. Today it stands rescued as a true piece of Americana.
On Folly Beach, where new builds often replace weathered cottages, one historic home has been given a second life. Known to locals for decades as the “Coca-Cola House,” this circa-1930 property narrowly escaped demolition until homeowner Wendy Gilder partnered with Adam Copenhaver and his team at CopeGrand Homes to restore it and ensure its resilience.
Built in 1929 by the McDowell family, owners of Charleston’s Coca-Cola bottling plant, the house served as a beach retreat for company executives and their families. The McDowells paid just $10 for the property at a time when Folly had fewer
than a dozen homes. It originally fronted Atlantic Avenue, a sandy oceanfront road platted in the 1920s. Beach erosion, accelerated by the 1940 hurricane, swept much of Atlantic Avenue and its neighboring cottages into the sea, leaving the Coca-Cola House as one of the last surviving ties to Folly’s earliest era of residential development.
When the Gilder’s purchased it, the structure was unstable, riddled with termite damage, rot, and mold. “At the time, we were doing a lot of historic restorations downtown,” Adam recalls. “I never expected to be called out to Folly Beach for a project like this, preservation just wasn’t happening here. But Wendy

Preservation Over Renovation

cared deeply about rescuing properties—bringing them back and reimagining them in a new light. That passion gave us the opportunity to restore this particular home.” Wendy agrees, “Against all odds, it’s still standing, preserving it was not just about saving a structure. It was also about bringing this part of Folly’s culture back to life.”
Project manager Rodney Mahosky recalls bracing the house with diagonal supports just to keep it from swaying in the wind. “The hardest part was keeping it from falling,” Adam says. One by one, foundation posts were replaced, and the house was stabilized from the ground up. “You can get close if you start over, but you can’t get this,” Adam adds.
CopeGrand preserved every beadboard wall, ceiling, and trim board possible. “We didn’t waste a single piece of wood we could reuse,” Adam says. “I wanted it to be clear this house is original. It’s not new, and that’s what makes it beautiful,” Wendy adds.
While its charm remains intact, the structure now meets modern standards. The team installed impact-resistant
windows, a standing-seam metal roof, cement board siding, stainless steel railings, and copper flashing. “This home is ready for the next fifty hurricanes,” Adam says. Energy efficiency has also been dramatically improved, with insulation and new windows cutting utility costs to a fraction of what one would expect for oceanfront living.
Wendy guided the design decisions herself, though she insists she is not a designer by trade. Her vision centered on authenticity. The kitchen remains at the front of the home, overlooking the street rather than the beach. “Everyone expects a kitchen with a view, but I knew I couldn’t move it without losing the spirit of the house,” she says. Instead, the team extended the living room three feet into the porch and converted another section into a master closet. “It feels like it’s always been this way,” Adam reflects.
Jaclyn Crosby, Marketing Manager with CopeGrand, adds: “You have to appreciate the caliber of the house that was originally built through hurricanes and storms, this house still stood. That says something about the original builders and the ability for us to come behind them almost 100 years later and

bring it back to what it is today. As our team dug deeper into the history of the house, it became clear just how significant Coca-Cola’s presence once was on Folly Beach. From the iconic Folly Pier, where the familiar red logo greeted beachgoers, to the local drugstore where bottles of Coke were a daily staple, Coca-Cola wasn’t just a brand here—it was woven into the fabric of everyday life.”
For the team, saving the house was as much about preserving community memory as keeping the architecture. “There wasn’t a sign or anything—kids surfing in the 70s and families who lived on the island simply called it the Coca-Cola House. Restoring it means its story will continue,” Wendy says. Adam agrees: “You can build something new and beautiful, but you can’t recreate this character. That’s the value Wendy saw, the value of preservation.”✴

Curated Cabinetry
This cabinetry expert curates bespoke kitchen cabinetry to elevate homes with thoughtful upgrades.
Perhaps the sweetest spot in this renovated home is the kitchen, a collaboration between Zach Pfauth of Cabinet IQ of Charleston and Leila Muller of Poppy & Shae Design Co. Together, they transformed outdated rooms into highly functional, beautifully designed spaces. Cabinet IQ offers expertise in custom colorization and bespoke cabinetry on a short timeline.
The process began with an on-site consultation with the homeowner, Zach, and Leila to assess the kitchen and adjacent laundry room. They explored ways to enhance functionality, expand
the layout, and establish a design direction that reflects the homeowner’s request for an open, bright, and inviting space to share with family and friends. From the consultation, Zach developed designs for both the kitchen and laundry room with a cohesive palette and style, to ensure the two adjacent spaces flowed seamlessly together. The cabinetry hues were inspired by the home’s Wild Dunes setting, to reflect the mature natural landscaping of Isle of Palms’ north end.

A Beach House Revival
Decades after surviving Hurricane Hugo, this Sullivans Island home received a renovation and addition it deserved.
Purchased in 1988, the home had good bones, even surviving Hurricane Hugo. “Once our kids grew up, we decided to return to the Lowcountry,” homeowner Mary Katherine shares, explaining that the bathrooms and kitchen were the top priority for the remodel. Because the home is on the historic register, the renovation required layers of approvals and careful preservation. This led them to work with Bridgeport Homes. Any exterior materials that needed replacing had to be swapped with like materials to retain the charm of an old Sullivan’s Island beach house. The home remained intact while Bridgeport Homes extended the rear, removing a dated bathroom addition and expanding the kitchen and great room. They also built a detached mother-in-law suite.
“With a home as old as this one, you never know what you’re going to get when you strip it down to the studs, and there is always the budget to consider,” Jamie Laird
of Bridgeport Homes explains. Mary Katherine laughs, recalling, “They never let us go off the rails. They’d sit us down and say, ‘You told me this was your budget, and you’re not even close.’” For example, the homeowner had hoped for heart pine floors, but Jamie explained they, were beyond budget. Instead, they selected engineered flooring.
One interior wall had been constructed with fence pickets, which were far from structurally sound. Structural engineers were brought in, parts of the design were reworked, and unconventional materials were replaced. These challenges ultimately allowed the team to elevate the design, including carrying the vaulted ceiling seamlessly through the kitchen.
Restoring the home, back to its bones, became Jamie’s favorite part of the project. “These homes were originally just cottages for weekend getaways, never intended to be permanent residences,” he reflects. “Seeing the evolution

of construction methods over the decades and carefully rebuilding the structure to modern standards was very rewarding.”
On Middle Street, drainage has long been a challenge, so Bridgeport worked with Dryno Salas of Green Grass Landscape Contractor, LLC, to install an extensive drainage system that not only benefited the homeowners but also tied into neighboring properties to reduce flooding.
Around the pool, permeable pavers were used to manage runoff, while structural upgrades provided strength for added resilience. New footings, reinforced columns with steel plates, and improved bracing were paired with raising the

Designed with Jamie’s guidance, the pool is finished with a travertine patio and river rock joints in place of grass for durability and easy maintenance.

Craig’s Next Chapter
The birthplace of Sewing Down South, Craig Conover reimagines his 1970s Colonial with a layered landscape and space designed to host with open comfort among citrus groves and fragrant gardens.
Written by Micaela Arnett

“I was looking for a neighborhood that reminded me of home.”
Craig Conover reveals the recent multi-phased renovation of his Mount Pleasant home. He gives Charleston Home + Design readers an exclusive first look at the updated exterior and inside, a guest-ready retreat with an entertainer’s kitchen overlooking a resort-style pool and deck, with a layered landscape.
Most evenings, at least those off-camera, Craig winds down on his refinished screened porch, one of the only spaces designed in the renovation for solitude. From this hideout, he can see the pool deck, the outdoor kitchen, and the putting green, all enclosed by lush bamboo and tropical plantings. In the corner of the lawn live his
bees. In the other, his vegetable garden. The grill is just steps away from it all, with perfect sight of the citrus trees that edge the property. “It’s always a staycation when I’m home,” Craig says, “COVID really helped us invest in where we’re living.”
“My goal for this renovation was to feel the way I do when I pull into my parents’ driveway.” He laughs, “It just took a while.” That feeling of arrival is the thread that weaves
together his house, his brand Sewing Down South, and his life in Charleston. Despite a decade of stardom on Bravo TV’s Southern Charm, design is not about staging or performance from his perspective. This home design is more about creating a space where things can grow and evolve with room to breathe and change, much like Craig has over the years. Here in his Mount Pleasant renovation, he reveals a space focused on fostering connection, where relationships and creative ideas thrive.
(above) The old and dated brick was painted a fresh white, while modern black-cased windows contribute to the updated farmhouse feel. (opposite) Classic shaker-style cream cabinets with modern linear hardware marry Craig’s affinity for country charm with European influence. A tiny two-seater breakfast nook provides a view of the new front lawn.
Finding Home
When Craig first moved to Charleston over ten years ago, he lived downtown, just steps away from the hustle and bustle of his former days. He later ventured into the Old Village, but something still didn’t feel like home. Both neighborhoods offered charm, but he eventually realized he wanted something more long-term, a place he could begin his future family one day. “I was looking for a neighborhood that reminded me of home,” he says, recalling his childhood in Delaware.
When Craig was ready to purchase, home was found in a golf course
community with young families and leafy streets, one of Mount Pleasant’s first suburban communities. A traditional colonial-style built in the early 1970s, Craig says this was “As colonial as it gets, set on more than an acre.” It had good bones, a traditional elevation, and room to grow. It also carried the quirks of age.
A dark brick exterior sat on a large wooded lot. It’s easy to picture the once chopped-up floor plan, worn finishes, and systems that would eventually reveal their flaws, like the massive hole in the kitchen floors from an appliance that probably predates Craig himself.
Still, he saw great possibilities for his future in the structure and its surroundings. “It felt like a canvas,” he says. Practical considerations mattered, too, of course. He heard the usual horror stories of new construction, including strict covenants and neighbors ready to complain about a weekend grill-out.
“You can’t pick your neighbors,” Craig says, “but luckily I like mine.”
The home’s footprint offered privacy and scale, the right ingredients for what would become a complete reinvention.
“I’m a function guy. That’s why I worked with so many different designers. I’m very collaborative. I brought in people
with really great visions, mixed and matched them, and made something cohesive,” he shares.
The Commitment of Change
The first phase of the project seemed modest with the removal of an interior wall to open up the floor plan. But one project led to another, and soon Craig found himself amidst a full-on renovation after a plumbing mishap in the kitchen flooded the rest of the house. While this was remedied, the construction team discovered asbestos, which ultimately led to a larger decision for the overhaul. “With older homes, if you don’t do it one hundred percent the first time and you just bandage, it’s hard to undo,” Craig explains. Instead of patching, he committed to a complete renovation once he realized the issues at hand. Luckily, his father’s construction background informed his decision, so he wasn’t daunted by what others might see as setbacks. The transformation was dramatic. The exterior kitchen wall was knocked down and replaced with a large slider. A screened porch was rebuilt with a clever privacy wall that shields views from neighbors and dampens sound.
COOKING WITH CRAIG
For Craig, the kitchen design is one of the most personal. “Designing my own kitchen was a dream. I love to cook, so I wanted the layout to be exactly how I move in a space,” he says. At this point in the project, Craig immersed himself in the cabinet design process, learning how proportions affect the eye and how drawers versus doors shape daily function. “It had me completely enamored,” he recalls.
The final design allows him to face guests while cooking, prep on generous counters, and keep the mess at bay in his deep farmhouse sink. The kitchen now flows directly to the backyard through the sliding door, allowing the oasis to be part of the conversation for guests indoors or out. Circulation is effortless, whether it’s just Craig preparing a weeknight dinner or hosting a houseful of friends.
Inside the original footprint, Craig turned certain rooms into purpose-built spaces. Upstairs, hidden from view, the sewing room nods to Sewing Down South, giving him a private place
to create and test ideas. A reorganized closet now functions like a small dressing room. Bathrooms were gutted and rebuilt with storage and finishes that balance modern convenience with traditional bones. The staircase, for example, required structural repairs rather than cosmetic ones. Refinishing the hardwood floors unified the main level, giving the Colonial a sense of flow it never had. Around the first floor, a curated brick veneer wall added subtle texture and a backdrop for art.
Craig’s style reflects a balance of farmhouse comfort drawn from his mother’s taste, tempered by a pull toward clean, almost European lines. “Visually, I’m drawn to modern, but coziness takes precedence over everything,” he says.
The Green Light
The interior now fosters a comfortable daily routine while the outdoor setting keeps his creativity flowing. “One day I was on the phone, standing in the overgrowth, and a snake
(below) The living room color scheme was inspired by the Lowcountry, with soft blues, greens, and yellows. A burlwood set of nesting tables introduces subtle texture, allowing his Sewing Down South pillows to take the spotlight.
crawled over my boot,” he remembers.
“That was it. That was the day I greenlit the outdoor phase, and I’m so glad I did. It’s the real MVP of the property,” he says.
“It’s funny because I come from a great family, but a lot of the stuff I do I’m doing for the first time; I don’t have an older sibling to ask. I recall that when I first started, I was pretty confused by the process,” he tells us. Thankfully, his connection with Kebb at SiteWorks proved to be spectacular. “He walked the space with me and listened to what I wanted to say. He got to hear the why
behind what I wanted, and he turned that into this design you see here,” he shares proudly. “He built me a beautiful vegetable garden with irrigation that integrates seamlessly with the rest of the yard, which is half turf and half grass.
One of the challenges was focusing on the present rather than the future. Kebb also worked on the front yard. I’ve always wanted a water feature. He built a nice reading area out of an unused space near the property line. The landscaping brought a lot of wildlife in, which makes it all feel
more alive,” he adds. Craig regularly has visits from bird and butterfly families throughout the seasons, thanks to the pollinator plants introduced in the redesign. Mature plantings anchor the design, with selections that feel natural rather than defensive. Many are local; some were brought in from Florida for variety and resilience. Craig’s love of citrus inspired rows of lemon, lime, and grapefruit trees. Blueberries and blackberries line the other edges, making a morning walk through the yard feel like a small harvest. into a lawn plan of half turf, half grass, balancing play and maintenance. In the front yard, Kebb created a planting plan that shifts fragrance seasonally. “I wanted it to smell like a perfume bottle. At different times of year, the aroma changes,” he says. Wildlife soon followed with songbirds, butterflies, and the occasional rabbit.
Beyond the landscaping, a grand pool and deck were constructed in tandem with Meadows Pool, streamlining logistics. The deck lined with marble pavers feels as much like a resort as a sandy beach would. The integrated spa features soothing water elements and fire bowls, adding to the ambiance at night.
The Art of Hosting
If the kitchen was designed for Craig, the backyard was designed with everyone else in mind. “Cooking brings people together, and I love to host,” he says. Summers in Delaware shaped that view. About a decade ago, his parents added a pool to their own backyard, and his father now says he wishes they had done it sooner. “Hearing that from my dad, who’s not materialistic, really stuck with me,” Craig says.
From then on, his decisions were guided by a simple question: What would my guests want? The result is a backyard that feels like a resort but functions like a family space. Specifically seamless movement between grill, pool, and deck, with shaded zones for conversation and an open lawn for play. “The porch is more for me,” Craig admits, “The rest is for the crowd.”
Inside and out, the renovation reflects Craig’s evolved identity. Artwork has become the most personal layer. “It has to be something you love. For me, the art is the best representation of who I am in the design,” he says. Though this was an extensive renovation, he knew he couldn’t change everything. “The one thing I couldn’t fix was the water pressure,” Craig admits. “Old pipes are old pipes,” he laughs.
The Business of Craig
Though this is a story about home, Craig’s career inevitably runs parallel. What began as a hobby of sewing pillows in his living room became Sewing Down South, now an eightfigure home brand with multiple stores. Skepticism at the
start only fueled his persistence. He’s been known to tell folks, “Keep every stone they throw at you,” he says. “You’ve got castles to build.”
This summer, Craig presented Sewing Down South at the Small Business Showcase at the U.S. Capitol. At the same time, the brand launched its first clothing collection with Belk’s Crown & Ivy label, a pastel-infused nod to Charleston living. Craig is eager to share the winter collection in stores nationwide. For Craig, the connection between his business and his home is seamless. Both are built on collaboration, creativity, and the courage to take risks. “Egos kill businesses,” he says. “The most successful teams are filled with people who are good at things you aren’t.”
New Growth
The Colonial may be finished, but Craig’s creative momentum is not. A new venture, The Waverly, promises to expand his footprint in Charleston as a premier event location. About starting new endeavors, Craig insists, “Don’t wait for permission to do stuff. Just go for it. We all know about Julia Childs and Martha Stewart, who are

“I thrive in collaborative environments.”
known for doing what they do, because they just did it. I might not be the best pillow designer, but I’m still making them. That’s the difference.”
Craig often describes his life as a process of cultivation. Like a garden, it requires patience, care, and resilience. “Now, I finally have a place that feels peaceful to me,” he says, “I can walk the yard, pick a blueberry, and know I created this.” For Craig, creation is not just about houses, or pillows, or even ventures to come. It’s about the daily act of tending something with intention. In Charleston, he’s found his soil, planted roots, and is now reaping what he’s “sewn”. ✴

This designer breathed new life into the space by expanding the island for added storage and workspace, replacing the upper cabinetry, and updating the lower doors. “When planning a bathroom renovation, many people assume that the showerhead or handshower determines how much pressure they'll feel. But the real driving force behind water flow and performance— especially in multi-function showers— is the shower valve. Short on storage, the clients wanted built-ins that worked hard but looked like furniture. CHD Interiors introduced a curated selection of new pieces inspired by the antique French panels in the background. The color and detailing of the panels set the palette for the space and influenced traditionally inspired selections, including the chandelier and lamps, rug, new bedding and bed, reupholstered chairs, mirror, and paint colors. These additions, paired with existing antiques like an heirloom dresser and a china display, create a cohesive mix of new and vintage within a soft palette of whites, creams, and blues.

Serrano
Photography by Callie Webster
Andrea Serrano wears many hats: wardrobe stylist, producer, creative director, brand developer, TV and event host, and small business advocate. A trusted influencer in Charleston, Andrea now invites us into her newly renovated James Island home.
Upon the expansion of her career, Andrea Serrano and her husband, Gustavo, discussed relocating to a home that better suited their needs. This new space needed to have an extra bedroom for a walk-in closet, and an office where Andrea could work more conveniently from home. “To have this much space is not just a physical expansion, it’s a mind expansion. There’s been so much growth, both personally and professionally, and it’s such a joy to have space to work, entertain, and relax. I truly love it,” says Andrea.
A New Chapter for the House of Serrano
Since gracing the cover of Charleston Home + Design Magazine in the summer of 2022, Andrea's career has continued to flourish, prompting the family’s desire for a larger home. The Serranos began searching for a new place to establish roots, though at first nothing felt certain. Then, just minutes from their current residence, they discovered a home on James Island that seemed to check every box. With a dedicated office and an additional bedroom, Andrea already imagined the space to serve as a walk-in closet and studio; the house was perfect for their next chapter.
She admits, “It was hard to leave. We redid everything to be custom to our family. But we knew it was time to go.” The new home offered thoughtful conveniences that eased the transition, including a spacious garage where Andrea now organizes photo shoot essentials, such as clothing racks and garment steamers. One exciting feature she shared is the ability to close her office door during Zoom meetings, a luxury she didn't have in her previous office.
The move also marked a meaningful upgrade for the entire family. With bedrooms more generously spread out, their
two sons, Mateo and Sebastian, now enjoy larger, more personalized spaces of their own. In her previous interview with the magazine, Andrea noted that her boys only wished for a cozy spot to sleep and a corner for video games. With this move, their world has since expanded well beyond four walls. The boys spend their afternoons fishing, watching sunsets, and exploring the nature trails just steps from their backyard. Behind the home lies protected land that will remain undeveloped, offering the family an ever-present connection to nature. This is a highlight of their move.
Global Glamour
Upon purchasing the home, some immediate changes needed to be made. The first spaces to receive an upgrade were the living, dining, and kitchen, as these are where the family spends most of their time. For the home’s interior upgrades, Andrea turned to her close friend and interior designer, Lissette DelVecchio, of Chez Lissette, whose discerning eye brings character and cohesion to every space. “Her expertise really made a difference,” Andrea shares, noting how Lissette considered everything, from the precise height of pendant lighting to the exact measurements of a custom bookcase. Beyond the details, Lissette created a mood board that kept
the overall vision balanced and refined. “Her contribution was immeasurable throughout the process,” Andrea adds. The interior design of the spaces was modern with retro and global glamour, incorporating her and Mateo’s love of travel and bold, graphic design. “With this new house, we wanted to incorporate pieces from all over the globe,” states Andrea.
In the living area, a custom bookcase painted in a rich black serves as a bold focal point. “We chose to paint the custom bookcase black as a nod to our prior home, where we had black kitchen cabinets,” Andrea explains. The built-ins are layered with a striking wallpaper from York Wallcoverings and thoughtfully styled accessories from local boutique Auden & Avery. The store’s team visited the Serrano home to curate the shelves, blending cherished family pieces with accessories available at their store that are sourced from Indonesia. Andrea opted for a sage green sectional from Celadon to reflect the home’s surroundings, paired with pink accents. The black woven wood shades from Island Shade Shoppe add texture to the living space.

The dining area, nestled between the living room and kitchen, showcases a black breakfast table with a fluted base from TOV Furniture, surrounded by black chairs featuring rattan-accented backs. A contemporary light fixture from GG's on Maybank hangs above, perfectly centering the space. Alongside, a rattan console table with graceful curves, also from Auden & Avery, introduces a fresh silhouette to the space. “This piece is one of my favorites in the home,” Andrea admits. Above, artwork by local artists such as Millie Sims, Jenan McClain, Julia Deckman, Sam Rueter, and Anne Rhett Photography, originally curated for her previous home, adds a personal and layered touch.
The kitchen required only subtle updates, yet a single change brought a striking impact: a custom tile backsplash that now envelops the island, replacing the rustic shiplap that once stood in its place. The tile, sourced from Clay Imports in Mexico, was chosen from a mood board Lissette created, inspired by the vibrant spirit of a Hispanic restaurant. Woven rattan barstools from Auden & Avery and sculptural rounded fixtures from Shades of Light complete the composition, infusing the space with warmth, rhythm, and a touch of modern elegance.
Tucked into a corner of the home, the powder bath makes a bold statement. When Andrea discovered the York wallpaper, she knew it would be the perfect way to
echo the color of the built-ins while infusing the space with a playful tropical vibe. The light fixture from GG's on Maybank and mirror from Auden & Avery pairs beautifully with a sleek sink cabinet from Wayfair. “We really go for it,” Andrea says. Black-painted trim and ceiling heighten the drama, giving the small space a big impact. “To have this much space is incredible. This move has been more than a physical expansion; it’s been a mental one as well. I’ve experienced so much growth, both personally and professionally. I can’t say enough about how much I love our new home. I truly do,” Andrea says.
Worlds Colliding
Now that her two boys are older, Andrea has expanded her career into luxury travel campaigns. She recently worked in Bermuda with the tourism board and style campaigns in Aruba for the Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis. With travel as her passion, this career pivot feels almost like it is destiny.
Inspiration is never far. During recent trips to Bali and Bangkok, she drew ideas from architecture, interiors, fashion, and jewelry. “I like to see how people are living on the other side of the world. It makes me feel inspired,” Andrea says. Over the years, this global perspective has seamlessly woven into her work and interior design. The rise of social media has also opened new avenues, allowing her to collaborate with brands as an influencer. Drawing on her background in photo shoot production and advertising, Andrea brings a strategic edge to digital marketing. “I will always be a stylist at heart, but wherever I can pivot and use that background, I will. It’s all in the same wheelhouse,” she explains. ✴
