Fresh Inspirations When I visit campuses this time of year, I enjoy spending time in our dining halls watching students make new connections and lifelong friendships. You can just feel the excitement in the air as they explore untested paths and academic challenges. This fall, many guests across our campuses were greeted with one of our three new residential dining branded packages. Each with its own distinct look and feel, our associates spent countless hours refreshing our spaces to provide positive first impressions and let our guests know that we are here to nourish their bodies and feed their spirits. Our hard-working associates at Chartwells have set the stage for success, rejuvenating the dining program and recharging batteries. Their focus has been on everything from refreshing food stations and developing healthy, new menu options to finding more ways to increase sustainability.

Campus Heroes

The new school year is one of my favorite times of year for many reasons, but the one that stands out the most is welcoming our new class of Student Success interns. This year we have over 100 interns at campuses across the country who, through our hands-on program, are preparing themselves for satisfying future careers. I hope these stories about our dining hall makeovers, hero associates and new partnerships provide fresh inspirations for you this coming school year.

MITs Hit the Ground Running! I’m eager to welcome this talented group of students and high potential frontline Managers In Training (MIT) to the Chartwells Higher Ed team this fall! The Manager In Training program is a core part of the Compass Group and Chartwells Higher Ed culture. We believe devoting our time and environments to educating and developing talent helps us continue to cultivate our business with leaders that are well prepared. This is an exciting year as we begin to officially transition from the MIT program to the newly created Aspiring Manager Program (AMP). H G A N I LLS N I D get glowing

At all-you-care-to-eat dining locations across the country, we have introduced three new, distinct looks to our residential dining packages. More than just design changes, we’ve introduced new pop-up menus, uniforms, lighting and a branded approached that creates community engagement. CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, EAST BAY

Comfy Connections Cal State East Bay’s dining hall refresh is off-the-charts original. Students can now dine at the new Market or Red Wave Sushi, which features made-to-order sushi and Asian bowls. And then there’s another choice: Pioneer Kitchen. Pioneer Kitchen embodies Chartwells’ “food hall” theme and feels like a comfortable place to hang out and linger with friends – and also eat fabulous food. As Mark Almeida, director of CSU East Bay’s Student Housing, Residence Life and Dining Services says, “When folks come to campus, it’s not, ‘I have to be on a meal plan’ but ‘I want to be on a meal plan.’ I want the Pioneer Kitchen to be a living room, a community where they can find new people. Chartwells and Dining Services plays a role in retention, and we retain students t c e n n o C & through those social interactions.” With their Dine n a s e t a e r c freshly renovated eateries, Cal State East Bay t n e m n o ir v en is helping students create new and lasting nd a n u f is t a th connections in comfortable spaces.

COLGATE UNIVERSITY

Writing on the Wall At Colgate’s Frank Dining Hall, students can now write on the wall. As part of this dining hall’s makeover, a cool ‘chalkboard’ panel was erected. It’s a dedicated space for students to exercise freedom of expression and associates to communicate with guests. Dubbed the “Colgate Communication Wall,” each quadrant of it serves a purpose: Showcasing social media, introducing associates, giving students a voice and highlighting upcoming weekly and monthly events. Talk about making its mark!

Simply Sleek

#DiningHallGlowUp

Adelphi’s Post Hall has been refreshed as “The Eatery.” The ambiance is modern comfort: White shiplap boards are set against sleek black backgrounds to help food stations stand out, creating a contemporary, clean design. There’s also a strong new message promoting sustainability through a reset meal plan. To help fight food waste, Adelphi’s new “green” meal plan encourages students and staff to “believe in what you eat.” This plan provides 20 free meals in The Eatery, as well as a sustainability set with reusable items to tote food and drinks on the go.

New spaces BABSON COLLEGE

Celebrating Centennial Café The name of Babson’s newest dining destination highlights this college’s 100-year birthday. Students partnered with the Babson Dining Student Advisory Committee to come up with this moniker – a tribute to its enduring history. Already a popular gathering place, coeds are lining up here for a taste of We Proudly Brew Starbucks, avocado toast, artisan sandwiches and made-from-scratch desserts. Centennial Café also serves still-warm bagels brought in from nearby Café Fresh, just 1.5 miles away.

STOCKTON UNIVERSITY

Shiny & New

Cultivating Global Cuisine Who says you “can’t get no satisfaction”? The reason to remodel Stockton Dining’s “N-Wing” Restaurant has been all about student satisfaction: Providing healthy food they crave and increasing their visits to the dining hall. To shake things up, N-Wing is now infused with pop culture, culinary trends and seasonal dishes. The flat tops have been replaced with global and ethnic foods, focusing on plant-forward proteins. There is a food station that addresses special dietary issues, including “Avoiding Gluten” and “FYUL.” Here, food is prepared to avoid the eight most common allergens. Menu items are also prepared to boost immunity, promote healthy skin and adhere to earth-friendly directives. To set the vibe while students dine, there’s even a new app for their phones, Rockbot, which allows students to download their favorite tunes while enjoying a satisfying meal.

WICHITA STATE UNIVERSITY

Shake It Up, Sally

Who can whip up a salad, breakfast bowl or snack before you can spell ‘robotics’? Sally, of course. Sitting in WSU’s Rhatigan Student Center food court, Sally the robot can deliver a meal from thousands of fresh, healthy pre-made and customized choices, created from 22 ingredients the machine stores. At the students’ beck and call 24/7, Sally never sleeps so coeds can satisfy their around-the-clock cravings.

High Tech Salad-Maker We’re very excited to have Sally the robot on the WSU campus. WSU prides itself on being an innovative campus. Sally is on the cutting edge of food service across the country, and having Sally provides a healthy alternative at a great price point and great value. Sally the robot is very cool technology. Rescue Heroes H2O for Hurricane Victims UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS, PERMIAN BASIN

Love Triumphs Tragedy

All campuses have plans to keep beloved guests and staff safe in the threat of an active shooter. And on August 31, William Boyd, senior director of Dining Services at UT Permian Basin, did just that.

Operations, Chartwells-Texas. “He logged into his Netflix and created a “movie night” for the students. He provided hugs when needed, and nourishment and a safe place.” Following the events of August 31, Falcon Dining has continued to surprise and delight UT Permian Basin guests with more acts of love, from free coffee to delicious cupcakes. In the tragic aftermath in Odessa, there were 25 injured and seven killed. And the town was forever changed. But there was also a triumph of love, Falcon style.

Boyd and his Falcon Dining staff led students and staff to safety as an active shooter opened gunfire on the town of Odessa, Texas. One of the most affected areas was across the street from UT Permian Basin’s campus. After keeping guests and staff safe for over three hours in lock down, what Falcon Dining associates did next was remarkable. Falcon Dining covered west Texas in love, providing 34 events, 1,570 bottles of water, 197 gallons of coffee and 2,450 meals. “The reaction of William Boyd and the Chartwells team throughout Texas, while remarkable, was not a surprise to me. In a moment of fear and high stress, Boyd responded with compassion and composure,” says Shannon P. Mariani, vice president of

FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY

H2O for Hurricane Victims To help Bahamians who were devastated by Hurricane Dorian, Panther Dining partnered with Florida International University for the FIUStrong campaign. As part of this initiative, the FIU team provided hurricane victims with 111 cases of much-needed water.
