Celebrating Our People Our people are the heart of Chartwells. Their daily commitment to serve our guests and students embodies the ideals we stand for. That’s why this month we were proud to celebrate our first annual YouFirst Day to honor our hard-working and talented associates. While we appreciate them every moment, it is incredibly important to me that we also stop and take the time to truly celebrate all they do for us. Every little thing they do adds up to big differences in the high-quality food and first-rate experiences Chartwells is known for.

This month, many of our accounts also focused on hope as they honored Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Dressing in pink, serving pink treats, and honoring their personal stories were just some of the ways our teams joined the fight. We are also honored to share the story of one of our personal heroes, Jeannie at King’s College, for National Disability Employment Awareness Month, as well as the tenured career journeys of many of our difference makers. With the holidays around the corner, we are excited to announce our second JoyFul event - ThankFul. On November 18th, students will unite across the country and sit at our Thankful Table to reflect on what’s most important and celebrate togetherness. We hope you all take some time to join us and take part in our give back events.

NACAS Awards Chartwells “Outstanding Business Partner of the Year” Chartwells was proud to accept the Outstanding Business Partner of the Year Award from NACAS. Each year, through a nomination process by NACAS member institutions, the award is presented to a company that embodies the ideals of outstanding customer service, supports the educational process, and has contributed most significantly to the success of NACAS through creative and generous means. Many thanks to our incredible client partners for nominating us for this honor. We are so grateful to be serving at campuses across the country.

JoyFul to be There’s even more to be JoyFul about and ThankFul for! Mark your calendar for November 18 and join the largest Friends-giving and give back event at more than 300 campuses nationwide! This event is designed to promote togetherness and unite students across the country through food. The ThankFul Table will feature a Thanksgiving menu and take place simultaneously at all Chartwells dining locations, encouraging student comradery in a safe space.

We are also pleased to incorporate a strong focus on community givebacks. Each campus will be donating 100 meals to food insecurity initiatives on campus, as well as host food drives during the month of November. This JoyFul event will include a variety of activities that focus on acts of gratitude for students and campuses to participate in. One such event is the Gratitude Cover the Wall Challenge, where students will write what they are thankful for and cover a dining hall’s wall in a display of love and thanks. The Chartwells team is excited to continue spreading joy and positivity in the campus communities we serve. We look forward to seeing everyone on November 18.

When we take care of our people, the best becomes even better. Chartwells YouFirst is a program to recognize and develop all associates. Through our three pillars – Community, Cultivate and Celebrate – we create an engaging workplace and culture where associates want to belong and are proud to work. Our people are the heart of Chartwells and we are building community, cultivating leaders and celebrating heroes that go above and beyond.
A Day at the Fair UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT DALLAS
Did y’all know everything is bigger in Texas? (And that includes #YouFirstDay!) Here, the Texas State Fair reigns supreme, and #YouFirstDay at the University of Texas at Dallas featured a fair-inspired sea of BLUE! Complete with fair food (corn dogs, churros and popcorn) and a photobooth, this team enjoyed YouFirst Day at two campus locations. Associates also munched on sweet treats from The Salty Donut and cooled down with shaved ice cups from Kona Ice. And no Texas State Fair would be complete without a few Midway Games, including giant Flip Cup, Guess the Weight, Connect Four and the best game of the day – a pie eating contest! The grand prize winner of that received two tickets to the Texas State Fair and $50 in coupons. The UTD community also shared their gratitude at weeklong “Appreciation Stations,” where students wrote notes of thanks – 950 in total. It was an amazing day filled with smiles.

More than 450 associates celebrated YouFirst Day at NYU Eats with cake, cupcakes, donuts and more! Each associate received a YouFirst bag with thank-you notes and YouFirst-branded cookies. They also snagged some fun gifts, including NYU swag, a monthly metro card, gift cards, tickets to New York City cultural institutions, like the Bronx Zoo and Central Park Aquarium, and even a 50-inch screen TV. They would like to thank their vendors for the goodies and their associates for being so amazing.
To show some extra love on YouFirst Day, associates each received cupcakes, handwritten thank-you cards, hero cards and, of course, candy. This semester has been challenging yet Purchase College associates have continued to show up with positive attitudes and smiles. Bravo, YouFirst!

Heralding Heroes TEXAS WOMAN’S UNIVERSITY
Even with rainy weather, the bright smiles on the faces of Texas Woman’s University associates outshined all gloom. To help celebrate YouFirst Day, everyone met in the dining hall for a special BBQ lunch. Along with a scrumptious meal, they enjoyed a beautifully decorated table, sprinkled with yummy candy treats. TWU heroes also enjoyed photo booth fun and a time of togetherness. A major highlight was the certificate awards and a gift card raffle.
Personalized Prizes STOCKTON UNIVERSITY
Stockton University celebrated YouFirst Day with treat bags filled with a personalized YouFirst card, sandwich trays and a prize wheel. Names were picked out of a jar to spin the wheel for more prizes, including YouFirst gift cards, Pepsi and Starbucks gift bundles, holiday gift baskets, and Stockton cups. Associates all enjoyed the fun surprises and day of special appreciation!
Sweet Slideshow UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI
The University of Miami team celebrated YouFirst by providing all associates with cupcakes, a hero card, UM branded cup, a small prize, and entered them into a raffle for bigger prizes, including a GoPro, Google Tablet and Amazon Alexa! Smaller prizes ranged from cell phone chargers, selfie sticks, sports equipment and aluminum water bottles to blankets, Led lights, beauty products and more. UM managers also showed a slideshow of various associates in the dining halls and food court, catching a sweet moment of a few seeing their picture on the screen.
Fabulous for 50 Years UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO
Chartwells at the University of Chicago had the enormous pleasure of celebrating Mary Steger’s 50th anniversary with UChicago Dining. “I was so surprised,” Steger says. “I’m just really happy they thought enough to do that for me.” The event highlighted Steger’s commitment and decades helping the UChicago community eat better. Her devotion was recognized with cake, balloons, flowers, and a Visa gift card during a celebration with her colleagues in Baker Dining Commons. Steger began her UChicago career on October 2, 1971, and she has served in every dining commons. As she says, “I have learned a lot over the years because every unit is different. I’m glad I was able to stay with the different companies that came in, and that they like my work.”

The Angelo Dining team received gift bags full of goodies to say thank you for all their hard work! On YouFirst Day, they were also surprised with a party, filled with delicious cakes and refreshments. Extra prizes included YouFirst gift cards and special hero cards! They are so appreciated at ASU.

UARK Dining kicked off YouFirst by sharing some sweetness. Each associate received a Kind Bar for their amazing Kindness. A few of the Kind Bars had a #people sticker on them, and if an associate received a bar with the sticker, they were entered into a raffle for prizes. Managers also gifted their talented culinary staff with framed student-signed aprons, letting them know just how much they’re appreciated.
Southeastern University Dining celebrated YouFirst Day with balloons, certificates and cupcakes! Shoutout to decades of service: Mary for 30 years, Beverly for 22 years, and many associates with 13 to 17 years! Madeline was so proud and excited to receive her 17-year award that she was on Facebook Live documenting everything. The simple gesture of a certificate had a huge impact!

MCNEESE STATE UNIVERSITY
TEXAS WOMAN’S UNIVERSITY
For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, McNeese Dining drew a “Tribute Tree” on poster board with the slogan, “Hope for a cure. Until there is a cure, there is hope.” Students and guests then added the names of loved ones lost to breast cancer, surviving warriors and those currently battling it. They also penned inspirational messages. Their hope is that the tree will be covered with pink ribbons!
Texas Woman’s University and Chartwells Pioneer Kitchen teamed up to fight breast cancer. For the entire month, there was a PINK special every Wednesday. They donned their PINK masks and featured a PINK treat to help bring awareness to breast cancer. Some of the PINK delicacies included PINK lemonade, PINK donuts and PINK cupcakes. And those who wore PINK received a special offering!
McNeese team members also shouted out their phenomenal warrior, Assistant Dining Director Adrienne Jones. Diagnosed with breast cancer at age 28, Jones beat it with treatment only to be re-diagnosed at 30 and again at 32. Now only 45 years young, she is a breast cancer warrior three times over! MSU celebrates Adrienne as well as those they’ve lost to the battle.
Rocking Pink T-Shirts WICHITA STATE UNIVERSITY
Two of Wichita State Dining’s breast cancer survivors rocked pink T-shirts from the Shocker Store in the Rhatigan Student Center. When each of these shirts is purchased, $1 is donated to Victory in the Valley, which supports area cancer patients, survivors and their families. WSU Dining is grateful to have these survivors on their team!

Pretty Awesome in Pink UNIVERSITY OF NORTH FLORIDA
The team at the University of North Florida wore PINK this month in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness. This is an annual tradition (in addition to their pink bakery take over) that keeps getting bigger. Associates brought the idea to management, showed up in pink chef coats, and got to work building a community. Several of their associates are survivors and have started their own community groups for one another to help individuals and caregivers cope, as well as to help educate on self-exams, advocacy and educational outreach. Deverick Houston MARKETING MANAGER, UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH AT JOHNSTOWN
Deverick began his Chartwells career as an Angelo State University student working as a marketing intern. From there, he pursued the Accelerated Management Program (AMP) at Texas State University. Now, Deverick works as Chartwells marketing manager at the University of Pittsburgh, Johnstown. “I’m fortunate to be a part of a great organization like Chartwells Higher Education, and look forward to an amazing and bright future,” he says.

Adrean Harris RESIDENT DISTRICT MANAGER

Adrean began at Chartwells as a retail manager 22 years ago. He has since advanced through multiple positions at Radford University. Adrean is currently Radford’s District Manager and leads others with the Service Leadership Model that he learned from his grandfather. Adrean enjoys watching his daughters cheer, and he has recently begun a fitness journey with his wife.
Caitlin Cooney DISTRICT MARKETING MANAGER
Caitlin started her Chartwells career as an 18-year-old at Northeastern University. Passionate about marketing, she advanced from a single-campus marketer to overseeing and leading the strategy for several campuses. “Everyone comes into your life for a reason and every moment happens for a reason,” she says. “Over the past few years, mentors have taken me to the next level personally and professionally. I have been very lucky.”

National Disability Employment Awareness Month
Our Olympian Kings College Dining associate Jeannie is truly an inspiration.
Growing up, it was clear to my family that my determination was going to take me places, and it ultimately led me to the Special Olympics. I’m the only Special Olympian in my family, but everyone comes to watch and cheer me on. Since high school, I’ve competed in over 40 Special Olympics for long jump, track and bowling, and my competitions at Allentown, Hershey and Villanova have earned me numerous gold medals. Yet my participation in the Special Olympics has given me much more than medals. I’ve made friends and visited different places, and this has shaped me immensely. Spending time with my friends at the Special Olympics is one of the most important reasons I love doing them. My job at King’s College began in 2002. The Special Olympics enabled me to hold a job I’m proud of, with the impact on my social skills being the most profound. I am a very kind person and I love to laugh and make others laugh too, but that doesn’t mean I’m a push over. The Special Olympics has taught me how to stand tall and proud and how to be an independent and happy person. I plan to continue participating in the Special Olympics for as long as I can.

Fun with Food! Our popular in-person Teaching Kitchen is back at campuses across the country! For this program, our creative innovators find new ways to explore culinary literacy with students. Participants improve their cooking skills while making healthy food choices.
Pops of Joy Truffles NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY
The first Teaching Kitchen of the fall 2021 semester at NSU was a hit! This semester there are two new additions to the Shark Dining team. Welcome NSU dietetic interns who are in the master’s program, Cassie and Dani! They created an awesome plant-based avocado dark chocolate truffle recipe. Students enjoyed taste-testing their “Pops of Joy” truffles!

This was kind of a “big dill!” UMBC’s Chef Ben and Dietitian Adam taught students knife skills and food preservation by pickling cucumbers and a quick kimchi. There are delicious and simple ways to give back to the environment by reducing your food waste footprint. Pickling is a fun way to preserve leftover produce, reduce food waste and add flavor to any cuisine. As participants learned in this Teaching Kitchen, it is an easy and versatile method to give new life to traditional fruits and veggies.

Teaching Kitchen Began as a collaboration between The Culinary Institute of America and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Chartwells is a proud founding member of the Teaching Kitchen Collaborative.
Glorious Guacamole FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY
FAU held its first Teaching Kitchen on September 15, hosted by Chef Cristiane Brito. Chef Brito demonstrated how to make a delicious guacamole. More than 40 students participated and even learned how to tell when an avocado is just ripe enough for a delicious meal.

An Apple a Day UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS
The University of Memphis’s registered dietitian, Megan, organized and taught a delicious apple-bite Teaching Kitchen in the Tiger Den. Students learned the benefits of using seasonal produce and its positive impact on local farmers.
