Counting Our Stars Our top performers are often called stars for a reason. They are looked upon as guides and influencers lighting the way for others to follow. Our stars at Chartwells do this and more, with humble attitudes and an emphasis on teamwork. They know they always accomplish more together than they could ever do on their own and do so with grace. This edition of Chartwells Monthly is always one of my favorite publications. It is dedicated solely to recognizing and celebrating our people as part of our annual Be A Star program. This year we celebrated each divisional win at our first ever Walk of Stars event in addition to our national celebration at the Compass Night of Stars in Orlando. It was an honor to shake each winner’s hand and spend time celebrating each individual at both of these events. Please join me in congratulating the winners on the following pages and thanking them for all they do for our guests, our clients and each other.

Fresh Food. Fresh Ideas. This year’s theme celebrates fresh thinking and bright ideas. The main visual takes the iconic “a-ha!” image of a light bulb and gives it a twist, powered by food items that represent the core of our business. The typography is structured so that the word “FRESH” pops; it’s fun, vibrant and eye-catching. The design encourages associates to think creatively, and to find the unique characteristics within themselves to make it an extraordinary year – a year where everything aligns to Be A Star.

Compass in the Community Compass Group recognizes its responsibility to make a positive contribution and impact in our communities through outreach initiatives and making positive contributions to the health and well-being of associates, customers, and the communities in which we work and live. Congratulations to these three Worcester Accounts, Worcester State University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Becker College. The three accounts volunteered their time and financial support to the Worcester Firefighters Association. Many Chartwells team members pulled together to assemble 1,250 boxed lunches for firefighters in their community who attended the funeral service of the late Worcester Firefighter Christopher Roy.
Inclusion Excellence Winner Teams were asked to highlight a best practice they put in place to build inclusion within the workplace, within their team, or with their clients and customers. We received many submissions that displayed programs and processes that emphasized the value and impact of inclusion. Diversity is the traits and characteristics that make us all unique. Inclusion is where you feel like you belong because the unique aspects of ALL individuals are valued, appreciated and leveraged. An inclusive workplace benefits everyone - from you, to the team, to our clients and customers. The 2019 Chartwells Five Jewel Award for Inclusion Excellence winner is Texas State. Their winning video submission highlighted why inclusion is so important and how the team embrace diversity and inclusion on campus. The team clearly has a culture of inclusion which pays dividends when it comes to the retention of people.

Campus Executive Chef of the Year Chef Mat Belzano embodies everything desirable in a Campus Executive Chef. A perfect blend of culinary skill and financial acumen, he has crafted a world-class dining program while delivering fiscal results like very few can. Impacting the community greatly by teaching and mentoring his teams, he has also made a real difference in the classrooms. In the pursuit of excellence, Chef Mat is relentless. Evident in every aspect of the program, it really shines in the Retail Innovation that he develops and implements on campus. “Part of my own role is to inspire our chefs in the field,” says Brian Mansfield. “But I walk away from every visit with Chef Mat and his team inspired and in awe of his accomplishments!”

Hourly Culinary Associate of the Year Chef Iris Robles represents the epitome of taking her lead from our guests. She is food station attendant for F.A.Z.E. 7, the Food Allergy Zone Eatery station at Worcester State University. When students approach her station, they are immediately welcomed by Iris’ vibrant smile and bubbly personality. She interacts intently to develop close relationships with those that dine at her station – well beyond simply learning their names. Iris works with a number of students that have food allergies. She develops specific plans to accommodate their diets on a weekly basis, making sure they get not only safe food but also dishes that they prefer. Salaried Culinary Associate of the Year Chef Sandra Bedoya is an irreplaceable member of the culinary team. She pours her heart and soul into every dish for every event, large or small, and fosters an unprecedented atmosphere of teamwork and positivity in her kitchen. Chef Sandra has created menus for high-level clients during events such as the Telemundo Billboard Awards and the 2016 Republican presidential debates. She developed the vision of diverse international cuisines for the inauguration of University President Julio Frenk, an event that has since been recognized as an industry award-winner. Resident District Manager of the Year A professionally trained and accomplished chef, Mark Tammone leads by example. You will see Mark completing tasks in the office, the kitchen and sometimes in freezer trucks, unloading 400 turkeys at a donation site. Mark’s hands-on management style has elevated his account to CFE status, and his team is recognized for having the best food and the highest standards. In terms of his partnership with the university, there has never been a more connected account than Sacred Heart. We truly thank him for making a difference across the division, day in and day out. I have been working with Tony since 2011 when we transitioned Missouri State University. It has been a wonderful journey to see Tony grow into a distinguished leader as a District Manager. He is determined, dedicated and driven to deliver great results for his community and responsibilities. He has always put his team first while being humble, hungry and smart. Living the Brand Award Kelly Linenberger has transformed the Wichita State Starbucks into one that was voted “Starbucks of the Quarter” by surpassing hundreds of other locations. Not only did she beat her sales plan by $2k a week in her first semester, but she also partnered with a local food rescue that picks up all expiring food from Starbucks to share with the less fortunate. With Kelly’s help, sales have risen by an incredible 40 percent due to repeat business. In addition, Kelly is traveling to other Compass sectors, coaching team members about how to run a Starbucks.
