Celebrating Our Team Players When we work together toward common goals, the sky is truly the limit. We each bring our own expertise and unique attributes to the table, accomplishing much more as a team than any one of us could on our own. Some days are easier than others and some challenges are more difficult. However, it’s in the daily act of trying new recipes, forging ahead with fresh ideas for sustainability and keeping our dining areas clean and engaging for our guests, that allow us to create a hungry, humble and smart team. In this special issue of Chartwells Monthly, we recognize some of the incredible individuals who light up our company. As they would probably tell you, being the humble stars they are, they couldn’t do it by themselves. They recognize their peers and other associates who inspire and help them get their jobs done more effectively. They realize they are part of a larger team, which allows them to thrive. And this strong team, in turn, propels them to work harder toward their next goal.

Executive Chef of the Year Chef Gene Christiano has an infectious energy that can’t be denied. He’s passionate about food, especially learning, and uses his knowledge to help educate and empower others. Chef Gene takes on challenges with vigor and calculated precision like no other. He is highly involved in community outreach and organizations that support not only culinary acumen but individual personal growth. Gene has developed an outstanding culinary program at UTD and has gained a prominent following along the way. He is an energetic mentor and guides with integrity. Gene is an asset to the Chartwells Higher Education sector and I’m sure we will continue to benefit from his contributions. It’s been a pleasure to work with Gene and share his accomplishments.

Baker of the Year Chef Whitney Dupree has raised the bar for baking programs on our campuses. Whether you are eating homemade sugar cookies at Sovi or enjoying a sandwich on fresh-baked bread, you can’t leave campus without tasting something that comes out of the bakeshop. Every cookie, cake, and pie is baked by Whitney in our commissary bakery that she manages. It supports over six units on campus with an overall sales volume of $23 million, serving more than 7,000 meals a day during the school year. Thank you, Chef Whitney! Director of the Year Khara Potter has done a tremendous job with her commitment to living the brand. Her clients, guests and community at Manhattanville College recognized Khara with the Valiant Plaque Award. This is an award that is given to a Manhattanville employee for his or her unmatched commitment to service. “Our clients and guests come first,” is Khara’s motto. This motto has rewarded her with an abundance of positive comments and satisfied clients and guests alike. Congrats to Andrew on this prestigious award and we send him a sincere “thank you” for all that he does to make a difference each and every day. Andrew truly lives the pillars each day and brings them to life through his team and within his locations. The University of Arkansas leads the way in student engagement with a robust team of successful interns who implement cutting-edge social media campaigns and sustainable practices on campus. Andrew also partners with the Hospitality Management program, helping to strengthen the bond between dining and the classroom. In addition, he is a champion of YouFirst with a keen focus on the development of his people by hosting events throughout the year including associate roundtables, associate breakfasts, and community service events. On the campus of UMASS Dartmouth, Ken Rapoza is known as “the mayor.” He and his family have lived and worked in the area for many years. Difference Maker Sean Armstrong is an absolute difference maker in both the West Division and across the Chartwells organization. He is a true partner to the field and embodies what it means to be a dynamic leader who instills the principles of the Chartwells brand throughout the marketing community. We are fortunate to have Sean’s leadership and talent in the West Division and appreciate the major impact he has on the communities we serve. Through the “We Are” campaign Sean has brought innovation into our storytelling initiatives on each campus by placing our associates and clients front and center. He also developed a signature program and tool known as “The Spark,” which creates a method for our marketing personnel to consistently measure their weekly promotional efforts and share them with our university partners. Chartwells Higher Education and the West Division, specifically, are fortunate to have Sean and many others leading the charge towards making a positive difference!

As we close the 2018 Be-A-Star program, there are a few individuals I would like to thank. My first thanks goes to those involved in preparing submissions. I understand the time and dedication it takes to gathering stories and crafting submissions. For me it has been enlightening to read through all the examples of why our people are so great. My second thank you goes to the Be-A-Star Regional Champions, listed below.
