To New Beginnings I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to each and every student who walked down the aisle at commencement and received a diploma this month. It has been an honor and a pleasure for Chartwells to be a part of this important chapter in their lives and we wish all graduates the very best as they begin their journey after college. May has always been a time to not only extend best wishes, but to also thank our own associates. Through the power of food, they put smiles on students’ faces, keep them safe and go the extra mile to fill their plates with something special every day. In this month’s edition of Chartwells Monthly we recognize some of these individuals who have earned the title of “Campus Legends.” These associates have a unique way of touching the lives of the guests they serve, taking on a significant role in their university experiences, and leaving them with memories they will cherish forever.

Many exciting things will be happening this summer. Let’s plan to recharge, and come back for an energized Fall 2018.
As I look back over this past academic year I am so proud of our teams’ accomplishments, most importantly their hard work, dedication and commitment to providing exceptional service to our clients and guests.
We did it! Another academic year has come to a successful close and we couldn’t have done it without our talented associates and terrific client partners. ANDREW CLAYTON UNIVERSITY OF NORTH FLORIDA
A Strong Presence at UNF Currently the ‘World’s Strongest Man’ in his weight class, Andrew Clayton “pumps up” UNF’s dining program. A UNF Osprey Café production and inventory employee, he lifts and loads hundreds of pounds of products delivered regularly. Clayton is also a huge advocate of Chartwells’ dining program, eating there daily. He encourages others to fuel their bodies with the tasty, balanced nutrition offered at Osprey Café.

campus legends / people PHYLLIS DANIELS BUFFALO STATE COLLEGE
Grandma’s Baked Goods Originally from Jamaica, “Grandma” Phyllis Daniels has been baking at Buffalo State since 1993. Along with her quest for ingredient perfection, Daniels sprinkles a little love into all her creations. With a warm and friendly presence, her campus-wide nickname of “Grandma” began when she was at work and learned her first grandchild was born, exclaiming, “I’m a grandma!” The name caught on and soon hundreds began calling her that. She acts like one too, listening and mentoring the students she serves. Her likeness has even become the caricature face on the “Grandma’s Baked Goods” logo. Her muffins, pies and cakes have been beloved by generations, but after 25 years she is hanging up her apron to retire. She’ll spend more time with her family and volunteer in her church and community. Buffalo State staff and students look forward to seeing Grandma Daniels when she returns for a visit.
PEARL BURKE FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY
Stellar Award-Winner
A testimony to her 16 years of outstanding performance as a FAU Chartwells’ associate, Pearl Burke has been named “Be A Star Hourly Associate of the Year” and a “YouFirst” program winner. This year, FAU President Kelly even recognized her with the “Shula Bowl Spirit Award” on the football field during the championship game. And if that didn’t top all, during the spring game she officially assisted the “red” team as part of the “coaching” faculty, staff and important community members. Burke continues to receive ongoing recognition for her wonderful work.

EGG-CELLENT ASSOCIATES Their omelets are worth waking up for – just ask the many students who wait in long lines for them! SHE’S A GOOD EGG
Angela Kalloudis Featured in many campus newspaper articles and social media posts, Angela Kalloudis is well known for her warm personality, tremendous work ethic and famous omelets. Crafting omelets at St. John’s University since 1999, it’s not uncommon for students to wait up to 45 minutes for one. As Student Government President Frank says, “Angela is the nicest person and makes the best omelets.”

“I am the welcoming committee when people walk through the door of Kilcawley Center, since Jamba Juice is the first place they see. I love to make them feel comfortable and welcome,” says Linda Wittenauer, YSU’s lead cashier at Jamba Juice. And she has made a positive impact on countless students and their families as well as staff members. According to Tom Totterdale, food service I love to director for YSU Dining, “Linda make them feel treats students like family. I’ve comfortable talked with numerous students and welcome. who say she is their ‘mom away — Linda Wittenauer from home’!” Amber Powell, retail director for YSU Dining, echoes Totterdale’s sentiments. “Linda is one of the warmest and friendliest people who work for Chartwells at YSU. She is dedicated to the students and always has a word of kindness and encouragement for everyone on campus.” Lift a smoothie and toast to Linda Wittenauer! GLORIA WESTLEY CLEVELAND STATE UNIVERSITY
Serving Generations Well
1966!
In 1966, when Lyndon B. Johnson was president, Gloria Westley joined Cleveland State as an elevator operator in Fenn Tower. Shortly thereafter, she transitioned to food service, garnering respect from staff, students and management. Early to work every day, Westley’s uniform is perfectly pressed, wearing her name tag, hat and cut glove – outperforming staff members 45 years her junior. A consummate and humble employee, Westley has served under eight university presidents, nine governors of Ohio and 10 U.S. presidents. No wonder she is considered one of the best all-time CSU associates.
GENA GORE PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY

Although Chartwells has only been at Portland State for nine months, rock-star retail supervisor Gena Gore has been taking care of business Y E A RS P S @ here for 22 years. Overseeing three PSU Eats locations – Smith’s Kitchen, Smith’s Place and Branford’s Bean – Gore’s recipe for success includes hard work, positivity and patience. Proactive, cheerful and responsible, she is loved by students and staff. Her storied career began as night supervisor and she’s worked every job in between, honing skills that set her apart today. According to James Muir, facilities manager for Smith Memorial Student Union, “Gena maintains great relationships with coworkers and guests, and does it efficiently and with a smile.”

The “Wright” Stuff
When Jeffrey Henderson greets his coworkers with, “Good morning, everybody!” they know it’s almost time for lunch service. Engaging, outgoing and attentive, this cashier at Wright State Hospitality Services is also well loved by students. In fact, they will often stand in a longer line just to check out with the gregarious guy who has a genuine interest in them. Checking up on their latest test scores and other life events, Henderson also solicits their feedback, offers menu suggestions and informs them of upcoming campus activities. And his charisma can win over the toughest of critics. Recently when a third-party company was conducting an audit, the consultant recommended that this outstanding employee be “lead customer service trainer.” With Henderson on board, every day is a great day at Wright State!
DOTTIE TOLAN IUPUI
Caring and Welcoming Always willing to take someone under her wing, Dottie Tolan has been a fixture at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis for 26 years and counting. A cashier who loves the students, staff and guests she interacts with, Tolan is affectionately called “grandma.” Regularly recognized on customer satisfaction surveys, comments about her include: “Dottie is the best!”; “Always welcoming and caring”; “Dottie has done an unbelievable job serving customers since I started at IUPUI last year.” Adored on campus, she is also dedicated to sharing her love with extended family. After raising five children of her own, Tolan now helps her daughter foster community kids. Together, they have fostered more kids than she can count, adopting five of them. A real sweetheart, Tolan sets the bar high at IUPUI.

ANNETTE DAMAVANDI SOUTHERN UTAH UNIVERSITY
Sweet Dreams Are Made Of These Steve Saffier fondly recalls Annette Damavandi’s homemade cinnamon rolls from his SUU dining hall days (1983-84). When he kept thinking about them, Saffier – who now lives in Pennsylvania – tweeted SUU Dining Services, asking if they could ship those delicious rolls. The SUU Dining services team responded with a photo of Chartwells’ National Baker of the Year, Annette Damavandi, the creator of this unforgettable treat. The award-winning baker said “yes.” So they carefully packaged the cinnamon rolls, a tub of icing, and an article about Annette Damavandi’s history of baking and her latest award to send to Saffier. He was ‘blown away’ and plans to reorder. “The cinnamon rolls were fantastic! I heated them up, and suddenly I was back in college. My family loved them, too!” he added.

Patty Sunderland Better known as “Patty from Gemmell,” Patty Sunderland knows nearly all the Clarion students’ names, details about their lives, their majors and their struggles. It’s not surprising that this popular cashier in Gemmell Food Court has been named in nearly half the customer satisfaction surveys since she began working here in 2012. During the 2016 election season, there was even a resounding “Patty for President” campaign. And when students graduate, many say she is the person they will miss the most. As well as caring so deeply, at Christmastime she makes ornaments for her coworkers. And she crafts hundreds of handmade earrings as gifts for graduating students.

Guests’ Twitter remarks about her include: “she is an angel sent from heaven”; “she is my favorite person on campus”; and “she was always the sunshine in my day.” It seems “Patty from Gemmell” understands how to ‘ring people up’ and sweeten everyone’s time at Clarion.
