Embracing International Women’s Day
I have always considered the start of spring as a time for growth and renewal. It’s the perfect time to reflect on past achievements and make goals for the future. While I practice this for myself each year, I also use this time to make sure that we are recognizing the achievements of others and creating opportunities for our people to succeed. That’s why I’m pleased to have had so many opportunities to celebrate our associates this month during Employee Appreciation Day and International Women’s Day.

When we talk about treating our associates with care and concern, we sometimes forget about all those people in the food supply chain who contribute to the food on our plate. This month we created a campaign led by our Student Success Interns to raise awareness around farmworker’s rights to help better protect those that pick the fruit and veggies that end up on our plates each day. Not only did our Interns get the opportunity to lead an initiative on their campuses with this scholarship program, but they also became advocates for farmworker rights. I am so humbled to work with a team that understands the importance of recognizing the people who contribute to our collective success and make a positive and impactful influence on the lives of those around them.

SUPPORTING OUR National Farmworkers
Chartwells Student Success Interns meet the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW)
Visit Chartwells o Youtube to hear n from our interns
Chartwells recently invited eight Student Success Interns to the Coalition of Immokalee Workers headquarters in Florida as part of a first of it’s kind Chartwells-funded scholarship program. Here, interns learned about how Chartwells supports fair wages and safe working conditions for tomato laborers – and how that affects other farms and the industry.
CIW fights for laborers fair treatment and compensation Organized by Florida tomato laborers in the 1990s, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers continues to fight for fair treatment and compensation. To this end, CIW created a “fair food” certification, setting strict regulatory standards. As a result, Compass Group, along with many other large companies, now only buys U.S. grown, fair food tomatoes.
Celebrating National Farmworker Awareness Week
#ICareAboutFair
As part of this program, these Student Success interns led a campaign on their campuses to drive awareness around the Fair Food program. Under the theme #ICAREABOUTFAIR, these interns hosted daily trivia events, took over their campus dining social media accounts and hosted fun activities throughout the week. To donate to the Fair Food program, visit: https://compass-farmworkerawareness.funraise.org/
A Humbling Experience
#ICareAboutFair because anyone who works that hard deserves to see it reflected in their wages, working conditions and quality of life.

I care about the Fair Food program because we rely on farmworkers for the foods we eat every day. Since we depend on them, it is our responsibility to advocate for their wellbeing and rights.
Supporting a program like this, even just $5 a month, helps you feel better about where your food is coming from and what kind of humane, or inhumane, conditions you are supporting.
