New Beginnings: Exploring Innovation, Joy, and Self-Care

New Beginnings As we begin anew this year, we look towards a future full of possibilities and new opportunities. While we continue to innovate and challenge ourselves during this time of reflection and rejuvenation, we are also recognizing the importance of practicing self-care and mindfulness. In the United States, one in four adults will experience a mental health disorder during their lifetime. At Chartwells Higher Ed, we are acknowledging this struggle and are challenging ourselves to provide resources and care to our associates that spend so much of their time taking care of others. Through our company-wide initiatives like Nudge, YouFirst Day, and other resources, we are taking steps to create a culture of care that gives our associates a voice to acknowledge, recognize and support one another. But our focus on mindfulness does not stop there – we are also excited to host our third JoyFul event, DelightFul. I am incredibly passionate about this program and its ability to make a true impact on students in the communities we serve. DelightFul will take place on February 17th, also known as National Random Acts of Kindness Day. We invite you to join us in the challenge to deliver 500,000 acts of kindness and spread joy on campuses and in our communities.

Honoring Dr. King’s Legacy On January 17, the UChicago Dining team celebrated the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through acts of service. Associates partnered with Southside Cleanup to pack over 50 “Dream Bags” for Chicago veterans who are experiencing hardships. The team helped stuff bags containing essential products, including socks and hygiene items. They then delivered them to the South Side shelter, Featherfist.

Healthier Heroes Behind the Plate

Ashlee Stockwell I'm going to eat better, and travel as much as possible!

When our associates take good care of themselves, they in turn, can take care of others. Our associates often put others ahead of themselves. But in 2022, we’re encouraging them to make their own mental health and wellness their top priority. Through tools like our Nudge associate app and our re-imagined YouFirst program, we are helping to create a work environment that facilitates mindfulness and self-care.

Micha Conrad I plan to be more active outside and travel as much as I can in 2022 Becky Dunigan I plan to eat healthier. Take more time for myself and my family.

While YouFirst Day is our national program and an annual celebration of “our people behind the plate,” we also help ensure that our associates are taking care of their own personal needs and expressing themselves in healthy ways. Self-care training across our platforms helps, but we also incorporate more personal means of expression to benefit mental health. Recently on our associate app, Nudge, we asked our team members to

Smile and say Hello

On February 17 we are proud to host the Delight-Ful challenge. This challenge is designed to celebrate, encourage, and carry out random acts of kindness throughout the country. Taking place on National Random Acts of Kindness Day, our Delight-Ful goal is to fulfill 500,000 Acts of Kindness. The third signature event in our Joy-Ful series, Delight-Ful is aimed at welcoming students back to campus for the spring semester in a memorable way and spreading joy throughout the year. DELIGHT•FUL

The Delight-Ful challenge will take place simultaneously across all 300 Chartwells campuses, encouraging associates, students and staff to collectively perform 500,000 random acts of kindness nationwide. Whether it’s pay it forward cards for use in dining halls, surprise pop up coffee bars, or student compliment blitzes, our goal is to spread memorable moments of joy on campuses and in their local communities. As part of the Delight-Ful challenge, Chartwells is continuing its partnership with celebrity Chef Jet Tila to help prompt student involvement and action throughout the day. Chef Jet will serve as a virtual emcee, calling on those at campuses across the country to do their own random acts of kindness. Each campus will also have surprise menus and pop-up options, kindness giveaways, and several activities designed to encourage guests to pay it forward and carry out their own acts of kindness. Delight-Ful is another example of how Chartwells is bringing students across the nation together in memorable ways, through Joy-Ful.

Soulgood was created in partnership with Pioneer Kitchen and Chef Cynthia Nevels, who is also an alumna of Texas Woman’s University. With a background in business and high tech, Chef Nevels began her passion for creating vegan food to improve the quality of life for her terminally ill son, born with cystic fibrosis. As her vegan culinary journey continued, she gained a devoted fan base, even catering for vegan celebrities Billie Eilish and Stella McCartney. According to Senior Director of Pioneer Dining Diane R. Jackson, TWU is excited to bring this partnership to campus and watch it evolve.

In addition to creating a praise-worthy dining experience, the restaurant donates 5% of every dollar earned to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and other local tax-exempt charities. Whether it’s bringing nourishing food to homeless children, reaching out to low-income and underserved communities, hiring the parents of special needs or chronically-ill children, or providing free information on how to live a plant-based life, Soulgood is making change in the world through their hard-work and dedication. Contracting a brand that helps fight food insecurity with their donations makes this partnership even more impactful.
