Warming Hearts Especially during this holiday season, I have many memories of my family gathered in the kitchen – the heart of our home – to share fresh baked treats or warm cups of cocoa. Huddling over the food we made together always led to conversations around what we’re thankful for in our everyday lives. As I reflect upon my family traditions, it is not a leap to think about those we celebrate here at Chartwells. We believe the kitchen and our cafés are the heart of the campuses we serve, and we

Coming together can lead to new friendships, renewed relationships and lifelong memories. There’s something special about the simple tradition of sitting side-by-side, taking a few moments and “breaking bread” together or even sharing a quick cup of coffee or tea. In this issue, we highlight some of the ways we captured the sparkle of the season, spread joy and, most importantly, helped those in need. So enjoy the season and a sweet treat like this chocolate bark, just be sure to watch your portion sizes. Water, plenty of rest, along with lots of fruits and vegetables will keep you feeling healthy throughout the holiday season and all winter long.

Earth-Friendly Chocolate Sea Salt Pretzel Bark Ingredients • 10 oz dark chocolate chips • 4 tsp coconut oil • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract • 1 tsp sea salt • 1 cup tiny twist pretzels

Instructions • In a medium-sized sauce pan, heat coconut oil and chocolate chunks over low heat until melted, stirring often. • Remove from heat and stir in chopped pretzels and vanilla.
• Pour out onto cookie sheet and spread evenly with a rubber spatula and sprinkle sea salt over top. Freeze for one hour to harden and break into semi-uniform pieces.

From working with children’s groups to delivering holiday turkeys to those in need, or collecting toys for less-fortunate families, Chartwells is committed to bettering lives in every community we touch. UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN - RIVER FALLS
Affordable “Fare-for-All” When the cupboards are bare, residents of River Falls, Wisconsin, can turn to “Fare-for-All.” Fare-for-All is a new monthly, reduced-price food program that allows community members to buy produce and meats at or near wholesale rates. Senior Director of Dining Services, Sue Boettcher, and the Chartwells management team worked with local churches, charitable groups and the hospital to help launch F-F-A. With the first distribution this month, Chartwells coordinated the preordering, picking up and passing out of foods. More than 60 people – from campus and the community – took advantage of incredible prices and purchased more than 100 packages of food. Fare-for-All makes it easier for those who are hungry or food insecure to fill their pantries during the holidays.

Secret Santas Bring Smiles Most children anticipate waking up to see presents under the tree. But for many, this isn’t a reality. Many parents struggle each day to provide the necessities for their children, and the Christmas season is just another added expense they can’t afford. The Edinboro Dining Services team once again banded together to collect toys for less fortunate families in the community, and employees brought bundles of new toys for the cause. According to Marketing Manager Tom Decker, “Resident Dining Assistant Manager Ellen Boumans (pictured right) spearheads this effort every year. She does an amazing job organizing everything. She truly cares about making our community a better place and ensuring that these kids have a Merry Christmas.” Donations were made to the campus Edinboro Food Pantry.

Feeding Families in Need
Plymouth State University recently participated in the Plymouth, New Hampshire, 2018 Hometown Holiday Celebration, an annual community event.
Each year, Clarion University and Chartwells cosponsor a holiday food drive for local families called “Donate a Meal.” Organized by Clarion’s student leaders, Eagle Ambassadors, this program allows students to donate one meal swipe toward food for area residents in need. During October and November, Clarion’s Eagle Ambassadors set up tables in the dining hall and students sign up to “Donate a Meal.” This year, during the four-day initiative, 498 students pledged to pass along meals to those in need. Several cash donations were also received, including one from an associate’s church. The grand total – from meal swipes and cash donations – set a new record of $1,868!
PSU Dining Marketer Paulette Ryan teamed up with the Plymouth’s 2018 Hometown Holiday Celebration co-chairs Jessica Dutile, a PSU lecturer, and Steve Rand, proprietor of Rand’s Hardware Store, to provide hot cocoa, cookies and candy donations for three events during a two-day period. These festivities were the Cookie Creation Tent on Main Street before the holiday parade of more than 37 floats; a Visit with Santa at the Plymouth Senior Center; and Skating with Santa at the PSU Hanaway Ice Arena. The cookie, hot cocoa and candy cane donations were a big hit with local children, parents, grandparents, CADY youth volunteers, Pemi-Youth Group Volunteers and PSU student volunteers, as well as PSU students attending the events. Event chairs were “very thankful and appreciative” for PSU Dining’s participation, donations and social media coverage.
With these funds, Chartwells purchased 60 turkeys and 40 hams to donate to Clarion County Community Action. The meats are distributed to local families who otherwise would not be able to afford a nice holiday meal. Chartwells Senior Director of Dining Services Jeff MacTaggart, Chartwells Marketing Manager Kelly Dungan, and several Eagle Ambassadors delivered the donations. The volunteers at Community Action were extremely grateful and confirmed that many local families will be benefiting from this event.
