Season Of Giving

3 Chartwells Gives Back

The holiday season always brings back fond memories of Christmas in my childhood home. Each year the house was filled with warm, glowing candles and the smell of cookies baking as family members gathered together around the dinner table or the Christmas

years to come. My parents and grandparents always believed that the holidays were about more than the giving and receiving of toys and gifts. Instead, it was a time to be present, enjoy each other’s company and give our time and our love to one another in whatever way we knew how. These are values that I’ve passed

on to my children and now, years later, they have passed down to theirs. It’s no surprise that here at Chartwells, our associates share in this same belief that simple acts of kindness and a warm smile can go a long way especially during this season of giving. In this special edition of Chartwells Monthly, our associates share some of the ways in which they spread cheer and give back during the holiday season. From donating fresh bottles of water to those without, to high-fiving a student after he or she aced an exam, to donating gifts to local underprivileged families, our associates truly embrace the spirit of giving. As you read through the following pages, please join me in celebrating the kind and meaningful ways we spread cheer this season. Lisa McEuen President & CEO

hartwells’ associates are opening their hearts and creating positive change for their communities. This season, Chartwells has provided comforting meals for those without, donated healthy dinners to underprivileged athletes, adopted families at local shelters, sent water to hurricane victims, and trained the disabled for jobs in food service. This issue celebrates the many ways we impact the lives of those in need during this special season of giving.

As UNCA Director of Dining Services’ Brooks Casteel says, “It’s something that truly touches your heart. We want to be a part of this community, and a huge part of that is lifting up those that need it most – especially this time of year.”

Fine china, white tablecloths and vases of flowers provide ambiance for the delicious meals those in need in Western North Carolina enjoy through the Downtown Welcome Table. Since 2015, managers and associates at Chartwells’ Dining Services of University of North Carolina at Asheville

Other Asheville-area restaurants participating in this worthy cause include Corner Kitchen, Rhubarb, Mamacitas and Nightbell. UNC Asheville Dining Services looks forward to this annual event and will continue to be a part of the Haywood Street Congregation’s outreach throughout the year.

The Haywood Street Congregation, which runs the Downtown Welcome Table, posts this message on its website: “Cloth napkins, flowers on the table and china plates send the message ‘you deserve the very best’ and are meant to counter the notion often held by those living on the streets that handouts, hand-me-downs and leftovers are all I deserve.”

Building Meals For Ballplayers Partnering with the local Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Johnson & Wales University Charlotte is helping hungry athletes get their fill. To keep the talented yet economically disadvantaged ballplayers of Garinger High School’s basketball teams fueled for their games, on December 8 Chartwells began providing these athletes with healthy to-go meals. In addition to bagged lunches, packed salads, fruit, drinks and protein bars, Chartwells at JWU Charlotte will serve varsity and junior varsity players various hot items from rotating menus. “The campus dining team looks forward to partnering with CMPD and lending a hand out to a vital group in our community,” says Director of Dining Services’ Paul Reinfeld. Chartwells is proud to be a member of this important directive, founded by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Shannon Finis. As Officer Finis adds, “We are trying to find different ways to get the community involved to help support these kids and motivate them to be successful on and off the court.”

For more than two decades, Chartwells Dining Services at Shippensburg University has partnered with Multicultural Student Affairs to provide Thanksgiving food baskets to local families in need. Through the years, Ship Dining has expanded its “Feed a Friend” program to include students, faculty and staff in giving back to the community. This year, Ship Dining purchased 500-plus items for students to buy with flex dollars and donate to the “Feed a Friend” program. Students could choose from a variety of items to donate, including brownies, scalloped potatoes, green beans and stuffing. Chartwells then challenged students to give even more. Students who donated $6-plus in food items were entered into a raffle for a $20 Amazon gift card. Ship Dining also donated $2,000 for “Feed a Friend” to purchase turkeys, completing the Thanksgiving meals. This year, more than 200 local families each received a plentiful Thanksgiving care package from the team at Ship Dining.

NORTHEAST REGION

Sending H2O To Hurricane Victims What began as a simple idea to spur friendly competition between two accounts in the Northeast turned into an impactful region-wide promotion to help those in need. In partnership with the charity Delivering Good and our bottled beverage partners Coco-Cola and Pepsi, for every 20-ounce bottle of Smart Water or 1-liter bottle of LifeWater purchased on a campus in the Northeast during the month of November, we donated a bottle of Dasani or Aquafina to Delivering Good. “As an organization, Chartwells has always prided itself in setting the example for others to follow,” says Greg Coady, Regional Vice President of the Northeast region. In total, 512 cases of water were donated to Delivering Good who then brought the water to Puerto Rico for distribution to those in need.
