FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL AND BOARD CHAIR Dear Latin Community, We are profoundly grateful to the countless people who give to Charlotte Latin School with time and effort and money. Their generosity makes this school a special place, where teachers can illuminate the world in a thousand different ways and students become their best selves. Since you are reading this letter, you are one of those people, so please let us tell you how much your efforts on behalf of Latin mean to the school. Thank you. Whenever we walk around the 129 acres of the Charlotte Latin campus, we see an inspiring kaleidoscope of the improvements our donors made possible, from the furniture in our classrooms to the beautiful buildings (new and old). School events, from track meets to debate tournaments, run smoothly and give our students venues where they can excel — that happens because members of the Latin community devote time and care to them. This issue of the Gratitude Report will update you on some of the specific ways our donors have improved Charlotte Latin, including the Honor & Glory campaign to improve our athletics infrastructure (see p. 26) and the Latin Arts Association’s work to build community around our theater program with its Behind the Curtain events (see p. 18). If you remember one thing about this issue, however, please let it be this: philanthropy at the school isn’t limited to specific programs and initiatives. It’s pervasive and essential: Charlotte Latin tuition pays for only 83% of the cost of a Charlotte Latin education, which means that community support fills the gap. Every aspect of life at Latin — every moment of dawning understanding in a classroom, every interaction that brings joy and meaning to a day — rests on the foundation of generosity that allows us to provide our students with a superior education. None of the work of teachers and administrators over the past year would have been possible without our community giving back to Latin. Your continued devotion to Charlotte Latin is why we are full of optimism about the school’s bright future.

MY LATIN

STORY A conversation with James McLelland ’17 about why he gives to Latin — both spontaneously and with a plan How did you come to Latin?

Around eighth grade, it became obvious that I wasn’t getting what I needed out of school. I wasn’t being challenged academically and didn’t feel any sense of community. Craig Estep was a dear family friend; I had known him since I could walk. I sang in his youth choir at Matthews United Methodist Church and he was also the head of choral programs at Latin. He told me, “Well, you should go to Latin.” That sounded absolutely crazy. My family came from a world where, financially, going to an independent school didn’t even seem like a figment of possibility. It’s the typical story of a poor socioeconomic background. Craig said, “No, no, you should apply.” I applied for ninth grade — and I didn’t get in. I went to my local CMS high school for my freshman year, and I hated it. I dreaded every day and I always sat alone at lunch. I was the first freshman there to take an AP course, so I was out of sync with the school in lots of ways. I reapplied to Latin for my sophomore year and submitted one of the most genuine pieces of writing I’ve ever done in my life. My essay for the scholarship application shared how Latin’s Core Values aligned with my own life. I knew that if the scholarship didn’t come through, there was no way my family could afford Latin. But all the stars aligned. I received a Latin Scholar scholarship, which met 90% of our financial need; my parents were able to cover the rest. 4 Charlotte Latin School

What was the adjustment like for you?

I felt like a fish out of water. Summer reading at Latin was a different level: I didn’t just have to read books, I needed to submit an essay about them. I got a C+ — I hadn’t seen a C in a long time — and the first words of the feedback were “Great job.” I was like, “What? How does a C+ and ‘great job’ go together?” That humbled me but it also showed me that I could become better. Once I arrived on campus, Latin immediately felt like the place for me, but I wasn’t sure how I fit in. Entering in tenth grade was hard — so many of my classmates had grown up together. But the teachers formed an army around me. I got an unprompted email from [then Upper School English Department Chair] Amanda Labrie, who told me, “We see the challenges you’re having and we see how hard you’re working to overcome them.” That was a surreal

moment for me, because I had never had that kind of support before. The more time that passes, the more I realize how I was more connected at Latin than I knew. I felt like I had no friends, but when I talk with classmates now, they tell me how they appreciated being in class with me or they remember conversations we had. By the end of my sophomore year, Latin felt like my home. It didn’t feel like I had come to Latin; it felt like Latin was part of me. [Upper School Math Department Chair] Carol Webb-Gargagliano stands out in my memory as an incredible human being. I had been placed in an honors algebra class with Dr. Ken Collins and halfway through the year, I got moved to the regular class because I couldn’t keep up with the academic pace. She challenged me, telling me, “You are good at math — you just haven’t been able to show it.” She helped unlock that ability, and now math and number analytics is an essential daily part of my job.

How did Latin change your life?

Latin helped me gain confidence in myself and showed me I had potential I had never realized. When I got to college, I was so grateful for what Latin did for me, showing myself who I am and who I’m capable of being. And I’m even more grateful now. Before I graduated, I had this thought: before I die, I want to pay back my scholarship in philanthropy, and then some. It’s not pride; I absolutely needed every dollar of help Latin gave me.

How did you start volunteering at Latin?

I love building community, and being at the intersection of people, processes, and technology. So I got involved with the Vision2020 campaign as a volunteer, which led to me joining the Alumni Governing Board, which was the single most impactful leadership journey of my life. I always knew I wanted to give back — I just needed to find the way. I hope that I’ve dispelled the myth that you can’t make an impact if you’re young.

We’re seeing other young alumni step up in big ways, both dollar-wise and time-wise. Something you learn at Latin is that you get back what you put in. A Latin education isn’t static: because of how technology evolves, some of the things that were essential in my education are outmoded now. The Latin experience of today is different from the experience of 30 years ago, and it will need to be different 30 years from now — which requires investment. I love that Latin’s not content with where it is. Latin’s not done building.

You’re the youngest Pillar of Latin. What appealed to you about planned giving?

I was working for Habitat for Humanity, where I had a 403b retirement account. An advisor told us that we all needed to have a beneficiary. At the time, I was not married; I was not even dating anyone. I told them that I didn’t have anyone to leave it to, and they said, “Well, how about an organization you care about?” Given how much Latin means to me, it was the obvious choice. It wasn’t a sizable amount: at the time, I think I had accumulated $3,000. But if anything happened to me, I wanted Latin to have it. My life has evolved since then: I’m married, my wife and I are expecting, and I’ve rebuilt some family connections. So Latin isn’t the sole recipient anymore — but it will always be part of my planned giving because of how instrumental it’s been in my life. Latin has continually changed my life, even after my graduation, and it will always be part of me. When I pass from this world, I don’t want that legacy to stop.

FIFTH

How the Lower School Rebooted Fifth Grade “Does anybody have an obtuse angle yet?”

Around the room, fifth graders held up paper triangles they had cut and folded, comparing angles and testing their predictions. At one table, a student paused to ask a question. Across the room, another started cutting up her triangle into smaller triangles. Without missing a beat, Jen Keith and Jill Flynn moved from table to table, guiding their students to a greater understanding of geometry. Their math class reflected something bigger: a fifth-grade experience redesigned this past year around the needs of students. The simple idea at the core of this reinvention was that fifth graders needed something different than what came before in Lower School — while being ready for what comes next in Middle School. “We wanted students to have an experience uniquely different from what they had already experienced since Kindergarten,” said Assistant Head of Lower School Avery Teichman. “We also wanted to prepare them for the number of transitions they make in Middle School, but in a way that felt developmentally friendly and manageable.” 6 Charlotte Latin School

Teichman and the fifth-grade team saw an opportunity “to design something new rather than continuing to try and Band-Aid” challenges of the existing structure. The redesign touched nearly every part of the fifth-grade experience, from instructional staffing to how students physically move through their day. It also introduced WIN (What I Need) time, a dedicated period that encouraged students to identify where they needed support, advocate for themselves, and develop greater independence as learners. Whether seeking extra help from a teacher or pursuing a new area of interest, students learned how to take greater ownership of their educational experience. One of the most visible shifts was the team-teaching model in math, which allowed students to benefit from two lead teachers working together in the classroom.

“They each have their strengths, and they’re complementary strengths,” said Dr. Sonja Taylor, Associate Head of School. “Every student benefits because every student gets math from those same two teachers who build on each other’s strengths in the execution of their craft.” Reflecting on the year, Keith and Flynn described the moment when their partnership clicked: “The real magic of team teaching happened for us when we didn’t even need words anymore,” Flynn said. We would glance across the room, share a look, and instantly know it was time to pivot to meet our students’ needs,” Keith added. Science and social studies were redesigned with a stronger emphasis on inquirybased learning. Language arts also experienced a significant transformation: reading and writing were separated into dedicated instructional blocks, supported by full-time assistants and more individualized instruction.

“Our number-one commitment as keepers of the academic experience at Latin is to respond appropriately when we learn new things,” Taylor says. “Our job is to recognize what students need and to shift in order to accommodate them — in the ways that best prepare them for the future.” That kind of redesign requires trust: from teachers willing to reflect and refine; from families willing to step into a new model; and from a school community committed to thoughtful investment in teaching and learning matters. At Charlotte Latin, that process is never really finished. The goal is to keep learning, responding, and refining in service of students.

For fifth-grade teacher and team lead Natalie Childers, one of the most rewarding outcomes was seeing how students regarded themselves differently. Three students who began the year declaring that they hated writing started creating their own series of short stories. By Thanksgiving, they were calling, texting, and emailing one another outside of school to exchange ideas and offer feedback. Later, students formed a lunch writing club entirely on their own initiative. “The greatest impact may not be that our students became stronger writers academically,” Childers said, “but that many of them began to believe, perhaps for the first time, that they truly are writers.” Looking ahead, the school plans to expand collaborative teaching and strengthen interdisciplinary connections. One example already under discussion is connecting Peter Brown’s novel The Wild Robot with fifth grade’s yearlong focus on environmental stewardship, allowing students to explore questions about technology, nature, and sustainability from multiple perspectives. For Teichman, the work is far from finished. She sees this first year not as a final product, but as the beginning of an ongoing process. The team will study what worked, listen closely to teachers, and use those insights to guide future improvements. 2025–26 Gratitude Report 7

MY LATIN

STORY Tara Garrity

Member of Board of Visitors; Parent of Rachel ’19, Abby ’22, Sophia When my girls started at Charlotte Latin School, I immediately knew I had a partner in their education. The school believes in creative solutions and works with parents in a way that allows for flexibility. I have three girls who attended Latin, starting in 2009 and ending in 2022; during that time, I volunteered at the school for everything from the lost-and-found closet to fundraising outreach to cochairing May Day Play Day to cochairing Celebrate Latin to being President of the Parents’ Council. I am now honored to serve as a member of the Board of Visitors.

10 Charlotte Latin School

I felt compelled to give back to a school that gave our family so much. You learn so much when you volunteer: you’re exposed to different views on life and meet people who end up influencing you. I believe you always get back more than what you give. My three girls are all very different — Charlotte Latin shaped their separate interests, be it theater, writing, sports or leadership opportunities. There’s too many amazing teachers and staff at Latin to name them all, but they all have something in common: they really care. With hindsight, I can see how special the gift of community in raising children is. During the most difficult and wonderful moments of our lives, Latin was with us: the people that we met from Latin have been active members of both the best celebrations of our lives and our healing from loss in our lives. Now I see my daughters make connections with Latin grads at their chosen colleges and post-college life: Latin continues to hold meaning in our lives.

CAPITOL STEPS Experiential learning in the Middle School, off campus and outside city limits

12 Charlotte Latin School

Spring in Washington, DC: Charlotte Latin eighth graders roam the National Mall beneath blooming cherry blossoms. Statues and cenotaphs glow underneath the evening sky while students move in small groups from one historical monument to another, discussing the lives of American heroes. Here, history isn’t confined to a textbook — it’s all around them. Experiential learning, a central component of the Middle School program at Latin, shapes how students engage with the world. “I’m passionate about offering our students a rich, robust school program,” says Lauren Putman, Middle School Dean of Instruction. “Not just learning to learn, but being curious thinkers.” That philosophy extends across all three grades of Middle School, where learning regularly goes beyond the confines of the classroom. Sixth grade begins with a two-day trip to the Whitewater Center designed to help students transition to Middle School and build relationships within their advisory groups. Later in the year, they visit Discovery Place Science, where hands-on science learning includes activities like frog dissections. In seventh grade, students take a fall class trip — last year, to Atlanta — and participate in a spring art walk in uptown Charlotte, where they engage with local art and see their peers’ Scholastic Art Award–winning work on display. Future seventh grade programming will also include curriculum-based travel connected to history and science, with plans to visit Williamsburg, Virginia, this year. By eighth grade, those experiences culminate in the trip to Washington, DC.

“We know the power of experiential learning, right?” says Head of Middle School Louisa Polos. “When students can engage in real-life experiences, the impact is so much greater. The DC trip is a great example of this. It complements the curricular learning happening in the classroom — engaging with material in museums and monuments enhances what students are learning and enriches their experience.” The capstone trip to DC brings together years of classroom learning while also giving students a new level of independence. Over the course of the trip, students visit numerous Smithsonian museums, the National Gallery of Art, the U.S. Capitol, the Library of Congress, and the Holocaust Museum, among other sites. They also navigate the city in small groups, share meals, and experience the life of our nation’s capital. “There’s a magic and a pulse in DC that resonates with our students — and with our curriculum,” Putman says. “The content they had been learning is suddenly meaningful. They see and make connections in a more holistic way.” That’s where learning comes to life, she explains: “There’s nothing like standing before the Declaration of Independence, or going to the Library of Congress and seeing artifacts firsthand.” At the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, students see their entire eighth grade science curriculum “on full display”: they can “touch and feel and examine” materials at their own pace. In locations such as Arlington National Cemetery, students encounter history’s solemnity in real time during the Changing of the Guard, which drives home how “there’s history in this moment,” Putman says. Thompson Purcell ’30 points to the monument tour at night as one of the most memorable parts of the trip. “I had never been to DC before, so seeing everything in person made it really impactful,” she says. “The Lincoln Memorial was incredible. We also got to stand where Martin Luther King, Jr., gave his speech, which was especially meaningful.” For Purcell, just as important as the sites themselves was the way students were encouraged to explore them. “We had more freedom on this trip, and

I liked that,” Purcell says. “When we would go into a museum, we could go anywhere with a small group, and I could focus on the things that I wanted to learn about.” For Colin Costello ’30, the absorbing environment changed the learning experience. “Sometimes in the classroom, people tune in and out,” he says. “But when you are there at the sites where history was, you get immersed and absorb the knowledge.” For Putman, those moments of connection across grade levels are exactly what experiential learning is designed to build. “We had several students this year who said they wished they had more time in the Holocaust Museum,” she says. “They read and learned about it in history and English — which made being there even more important to them.” Across all three grades, these experiences are designed to foster curious thinkers who connect with the world around them. “Curiosity is at the underpinning of all that we do,” Putman says. “We need to extend our classroom beyond its walls.”

2025–26 Gratitude Report 13

School spirit is the thing with blue feathers “Somebody’s got to love Charlotte Latin School to put themselves through that,” says Nancy Atwell, Head of the Cheerleading Program. She’s talking about adopting the identity of the school’s mascot, Victor E. Hawk, who is the silent but enthusiastic representative of the student body on the sidelines of Patten Stadium and beyond: the suit can get boiling hot and sweaty, and although it is regularly treated with Lysol and Febreze, “most dry cleaners won’t touch it with a ten-foot pole.” Charlotte Latin has had a costumed Hawk mascot since the earliest days of the school, but it remained nameless for years, only getting christened Victor E. Hawk circa 2000. Over the decades, the costume has gone through multiple iterations, becoming more imposing and muscular. This fall, Latin Athletics will debut a new version — Booster Club and Parents’ Council have split the costs of the design and fabrication of the next Victor outfit.

14 Charlotte Latin School

“Every person inside the suit puts a spin on it,” says Atwell. Dozens of people, students and Latin staffers alike, have turned themselves into Victor at least a few times, but usually one Upper School student takes on the primary responsibility for a school year — and keeps their identity secret until they’ve graduated. While most Victors last for a year or two, the most recent wearer of the blue feathers is entering their fourth year on the job. They recently consented to an (anonymous) interview about life inside the suit.

My first time as Victor was at an admissions event, welcoming the littler kids back to campus. And I fell in love with it. You see these kids in the costume, and they’ll cling to you and be so attached to you. And then 30 minutes later, when you come out of the costume, they pay you no mind because they don’t know it’s you. I have to exaggerate my motions: everything is three times as big. When I’m clapping, the shoulder pads give me limited mobility, so I have to really swing my arms out. My freshman year, when I was recruited to be the Hawk for four years, I started watching videos of mascots. A mascot that stands still looks like a statue, so even during solemn moments, like the national anthem, I sway back and forth. It gets hot inside the costume. There used to be a fan inside, but it broke the year before I took over. During the fall months, football games start before the sun has set — and I’ve been told that the costume adds another 35 degrees, so sometimes I have to take a break or sit down if I’m feeling lightheaded. It’s weird to be the most photographed person on campus and have nobody know it’s you. You have to be at least a bit extroverted to get out there and be in the spotlight. But you also can be introverted: I don’t have to control my facial expressions at all. When my social battery runs out and I’m in the hot costume, I don’t have to keep up a facade. Some little kids are terrified of Victor, so it helps for a parent to say to them, “It’s not actually a hawk with an eight-pack. Please don’t be worried.” I can’t

ruin the illusion, but I can hint that I’m not actually a 200-pound bird by nodding or patting them on the back. But other kids are more comfortable thinking that I’m truly a bird. When they ask where I live, I point to a tree. I’ve been lucky: nothing has ever gone terribly wrong. I’ve never tripped; the head has never come off. The elastic in the hands is getting weaker, so a couple of times I’ve come close to them coming off. My freshman year, we had choreographed a dance to “September” by Earth, Wind, and Fire. And as soon as they started the music, there was a downpour. Everyone in the stands took off so they wouldn’t get wet, but the cheerleaders and I kept doing our “September” routine to five people in the pouring rain, laughing the whole time. Whoever becomes Victor after me, I would tell them to stay hydrated and have fun. It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the lights and the crowd, but go with the flow. You can interact with adults however you like, because everyone thinks it’s funny when you’re a mascot. I’ve had so many opportunities to poke Mr. Baldecchi or rub his head, which I would never do out of costume. I’ve learned how even the smallest interactions can make somebody’s day. Out of costume, that can be waving to someone in the hallway. When I’m in the costume at a football game, sometimes kids will be too shy to come down and say hello. But if my parents see that, they’ll send me a text, and then I’ll come up into the stands and I can see their faces light up.

Victor through the years

MY LATIN

STORY Kristen Schneider and C.J. Kearney 2025–26 Latin Fund Chairs; Parents of Louisa ’35, Annie ’38 C.J.: We are so fortunate to send our children to a school where they’re happy, they’re comfortable, they’re learning. The communication from teachers is always there: we hear from the teachers if it’s a positive day, a tough day, a day where we need to work on something. We felt connected from the first tour we took when we were applying for Kindergarten. Walking around, seeing students interacting with each other and enjoying campus, teachers introducing themselves to us, it was such a different feeling from other schools. Kristen: It was more inclusive — we didn’t feel like we had to already know people. C.J.: Latin is so intentional in how it builds community with events like Sunny’s Day. Kristen: At Touchdown Tailgate, our girls wore their little cheerleading uniforms and ran through a tunnel that the Upper School cheerleaders made. It was such a sweet moment for them. C.J.: Everything goes back to the teachers: they’re the core of the school. Every year, the kids have liked their teachers. We know that every day, we’re sending our children to a school where teachers really understand them: their strengths, their weaknesses, their needs. Kristen: The teachers have partnered with us so that our kids can realize their potential. It is such a gift knowing that our kids are in great hands — and that they’re happy every day going to school. 16 Charlotte Latin School

C.J.: From day one, we knew we wanted to give back to Latin. It makes total sense to do everything we can — whether it’s time or monetary donations — to help move Latin in the right direction. We’re investing in the future of our children, and their classmates. We want them to have every opportunity. Kristen: When I talk about Latin with other parents, they’re always saying how much they love the teachers here. I would remind people that the best way to support and retain the teachers we love is through the Latin Fund, which makes sure their classrooms are equipped with the resources they need and provides them with an annual gratitude bonus. C.J.: Of course, it’s fulfilling when you see the direct impact of your giving. One bonus we didn’t expect was how we’ve deepened our roots in the Latin community. We’ve connected with so many wonderful Latin families — and know so much about their values. Volunteering together builds a special bond. Kristen: The community is a wonderful place and the families are great. All the people here, from parents to teachers to administrators, are supportive of the students. It is just a very welcoming place to be.

2025–26 Gratitude Report 17

On opening night of the Upper School musical, the Latin Arts Association puts on a show of its own Gina Lawrence P ’24 ’26 felt a disconnect: when she told friends outside Charlotte Latin School that her artistically-minded daughter was attending Latin, they knew the strength of the school’s arts programs and were immediately impressed by her family’s good fortune. At Latin itself, however, she felt that art was often overshadowed by athletics. The arts programs didn’t need reinventing, she reasoned: there just needed to be louder celebrations of their triumphs and a stronger sense of community. In advance of the bluegrass musical Bright Star in 2021, the Latin Arts Association (where Lawrence was serving as president) kicked off a

signature program to thank the parents who were supporting the arts at Latin, to boost the connections among them, and to provide insight as to what was happening: Behind the Curtain. Each year, Behind the Curtain transforms a space in the Horne Performing Arts Center into an immersive theatrical environment and hosts volunteers and donors with dinner and a conversation with the creative team of the Upper School musical. “People go to the event and learn more about what’s being put forward on the stage,” Lawrence said. “I feel inspired by how many people are interested in it.”

“We wanted to elevate the experience of the musical for folks who have shown they’re really engaged,” commented Matt Cosper, Director of the Theater Arts Program. “They’ve invested time and money in the work we’re doing. We refer to Latin as a community of learners: we’re educating our students about what it is to make theater, but that community includes all sorts of stakeholders, including teachers, staff members, parents and alumni. I love how Behind the Curtain invites that community into our process and those people learn more about how we make theater.” Cosper added, “Making theater isn’t transactional. I say it’s not theater until the audience is there, but it’s not because actors hand a performance off to the audience — it’s because there’s an exchange. Theater has a feedback loop, where energy flows from the stage to the audience and from the audience to the stage. Behind the Curtain gives people an opportunity to have a fuller stake in that feedback loop.”

Before this year’s run of the Kander-Ebb musical Cabaret, for example, Cosper, along with the show’s technical director Ryan Maloney, musical director Ryan Harrison, and choreographer Emily Hunter discussed the artistic choices they made to underline the show’s narrative of German people ignoring and succumbing to the rise of the Nazi party. “Anyone could have watched our production of Cabaret and gotten what we were going for,” Cosper said, “but they couldn’t have necessarily articulated the research we did into the Dada movement, and the connections we made between the physicality of Bob Fosse and the weird puppet vibes that a lot of his choreography has, and how that connects thematically with authoritarian governments. Behind the Curtain lets us shine a light on the little things.” Cosper has seen how the adults preparing for Behind the Curtain parallel the efforts of students readying the musical. “We know there’s a production that’s happening alongside ours, but then we show up and there’s something fully realized and the decorations are out of this world.” Brittany DuBose P ’27 has taken the lead on those decorations in recent years, helping transform Anne’s Black Box into a speakeasy for The Drowsy Chaperone and locating an eight-foot chandelier that could be spraypainted and hung above the Durrett Stage in Thies Auditorium for Cabaret. “I love to see the set designs come to life,” she confided. “The team always says ‘Let’s find a way to do it.’” Every year, the Behind the Curtain crew aims to top their previous efforts — while keeping to a strict budget. Those limitations produce creative solutions: when the Mean Girls environment of a high-school cafeteria needed a salad bar with a sneezeguard, they constructed it with PVC pipe and silver spraypaint. Summarizing years of Behind the Curtain effort, DuBose observed, “It’s a wonderful way to say thank you.” Cosper added, “When I was doing theater growing up, I didn’t have the experience of parents being involved like this. To me, Behind the Curtain is really moving: it’s proof that the support from parents isn’t just practical, it’s also cultural. Every year, it reminds me how remarkable the community of Charlotte Latin is.”

How an internship led Marisol Wickham ’26 to make biomedical devices that improve real-world outcomes for patients

20 Charlotte Latin School

When most people think about scientific and engineering advances, their minds leap to bleeding-edge technologies like artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, and quantum computing. “When people ask me about my engineering, they want to hear about a drone,” said Marisol Wickham ’26. She’s applied her talents, however, to biomedical devices that are more modest — a mirror that allows patients to self-catheterize, a tube that makes it easier for patients to don compression socks — but that, when done right, can improve the quality of life for a broad slice of the population. Wickham started working on these projects as part of an internship program, a partnership between the Innovation and Design Department at Charlotte Latin School and Atrium Health’s Carolinas Rehabilitation and The Pearl innovation district. “Charlotte has historically been a financial-tech town, but these groups want it to be a med-tech center,” reported Tom Dubick, Chair of the Innovation and Design department and Director of the Fab Lab. Representatives from Atrium Health gave the students in Latin’s Advanced Topics in Engineering class an overview of the principles of assistive technology and universal design, along with a wishlist of items that its patients needed (some of which were already available commercially, but at prohibitive prices). Dubick said, “The need is huge, and our students are extremely qualified to do this.” Dubick added, “Two students came to me on the same day and told me that these internships had already changed their lives. That’s what you dream of hearing as a teacher — and in all these years, I had never had it happen twice in one day.” Wickham’s journey to an engineering career began in sixth grade: “My mom made me join Girls Who Code and I hated it,” she remembered. But the following year, when she was the only girl in her coding class, that steeled her determination not to quit. Those classes led into the Upper School engineering curriculum and her heavy-duty use of Fusion 360 design software and the Fab Lab’s state-of-the-art array of 3D printers.

“My freshman year, I decided I wanted to be an engineer, because I had never had anything that I was so interested in,” she said. “I wanted to be passionate about my job.” Optimizing the devices for their users required Wickham to consult with occupational therapists and catheterization specialists, since the medical needs were “things that I obviously don’t think about in my day-to-day life as an 18-year-old,” she said with a smile. “A lot of people think engineers have no social skills,” she added. “But I love working with people — I want to make devices that are useful for as many people as I can. And I’m an advocate for women, who are neglected in the medical market.” Because of the human anatomy, it’s easier for men to self-catheterize: Wickham’s device includes leg binders that steady an adjustable mirror, which comes with an LED light, making it easier for women (even those with unsteady hands because of medical conditions) to address their own catheterization needs without the expensive intervention of a health aide. As she headed off for her freshman year at Wake Forest University, Wickham was prototyping her self-catheterization aid and solidifying the IP rights to her device; she planned to study biomedical engineering. “I don’t want to be the most famous engineer any more,” she confessed. “I just want to do work where I can make an impact with people.” 2025–26 Gratitude Report 21

MY LATIN

STORY Pearce Hayes Class of 1998

I arrived at Charlotte Latin as an outsider wearing a Led Zeppelin shirt. Right away, everybody made me feel like I belonged. Spencer Edge ’98 came up to me and said, “Man, I like that shirt.” The people at Latin are the school’s greatest asset. Some of my closest friendships began at Latin and have lasted a lifetime. And the faculty and staff changed my life. Richard Fletcher ’85 (current Visual Arts Chair and former Head Wrestling Coach) had the greatest impact on me. As a coach, he didn’t push you too hard: he had a very calm nature and a gentle way of getting you to do what needed to be done. And he was also great as an art teacher: he helped me think differently and brought out my creativity. Everyone at Latin was always so helpful to me, and so I’ve wanted to do whatever I can to be helpful to the school. Even today, when I think about Latin, it brings a great sense of gratitude.

The uplifting legacy of Sara “Sunny” Harris Hutchinson ’93

24 Charlotte Latin School

Overflowing with enthusiasm and support, an Upper School student coached a new Lower School friend on how to paint a flowerpot: “You can do whatever you want here. Just be creative! You’re doing a great job!” Focused on her paintbrush, the Lower School student paused for a moment to explain her artistic philosophy: “I want lots of colors that make you think of eating ice cream on a sunny day.” This vignette was one of thousands of moments of connection and uplift on the 2026 Sunny’s Day, the annual community day at Charlotte Latin when students team up in cross-divisional partnerships. Together, students raced through scavenger hunts, played games that emphasized collaboration and environmental stewardship, explored a World Fair that centered on the six international sister cities of Charlotte, and worked on art projects (such as the flowerpots) that benefited Habitat for Humanity, one of Charlotte Latin’s community partners.

Together, these three programs permanently connect Sunny to Latin and remind our students throughout the year and their Latin journey the importance of kindness, inclusion and friendship. As Head of School Chuck Baldecchi told the assembled student body in Patten Stadium on Sunny’s Day, “Sunny loved nothing more than bringing people together, illuminating their spirits and connecting them. When Sunny met somebody new, they were immediately invited to the party. When Sunny was on a sports team, she was the glue.” He summarized the philosophy that has made Sunny’s Legacy a living part of life at Latin: “Her legacy is an inspiration to us, and it reminds us of the kind of community we want to have at Charlotte Latin.”

“We wanted our students to think about what makes a house a home,” said Lower School Community-Engaged Learning Coordinator Amy Ballaban. Sunny’s Day is a colorful and vibrant tribute to the memory of Sara “Sunny” (Harris) Hutchinson ’93 that celebrates the values she was known for during her years at Latin: hope, friendship, and generosity to others. However, Sunny’s Day is only one part of Sunny’s Legacy, a trio of programs designed to honor Sunny and bring out the best of her traits in today’s students. Sunny’s Honor is an annual award, presented to the graduating senior who embodies Sunny’s selflessness, empathy, and loyalty, showing daily enthusiasm for the people around them. However, the pinnacle of Sunny’s Legacy is Sunny’s Scholarship, Charlotte Latin’s signature scholarship program. The worthy recipients of this scholarship are fully supported from Grade 6 through graduation: it covers not only their tuition but other aspects of life at Latin (lunch, books, class trips) so they can participate in the complete Latin experience. 2025–26 Gratitude Report 25

PROJECT 1: FIELD 2 LIGHTS

Since first turning on in spring 2025, the new stadium lights have shone on more games, more fans, and more Hawk highlights than Field 2 has ever hosted before!

PROJECT 2: NEW TURF FIELDS

After debuting in August 2025, the two new turf fields on the Levine Athletic Campus have been in nearly constant use across the seasons. Through changing weather and demanding training schedules, our Hawks have made full use of these incredible new spaces.

We proudly recognize those leadership donors who committed a major gift of $25,000 or more to the Honor & Glory campaign. The Honor & Glory campaign launched in August 2024 to create an unparalleled athletics experience for our studentathletes and coaches. Our community’s generous support of $7.8 million is moving Latin athletics forward and providing the resources and expanded opportunities for our athletes to train, compete, and excel.

In addition to establishing an athletics endowment for long-term program and facility upkeep and contributing significantly to the Latin Fund, donors to the Honor & Glory Campaign are bringing four new athletics facilities to Latin’s campus.

PROJECT 3: VALOR HALL GYM

PROJECT 4: HIT (HAWK INTENSITY TRAINING) CENTER

Opening in winter 2027, the Valor Hall Gym will be an invaluable addition to Latin’s main campus and the perfect complement to the Strength Center to help our Hawks soar. Hardwood flooring will make it an ideal space for indoor practices, while providing greater flexibility across our athletics and PE programs.

Opening in winter 2027, the HIT Center will be our first fully indoor training and practice facility on the Levine Athletic Campus. With a turf floor versatile enough to host a wide range of teams, it will feature pitching and hitting cages for our softball and baseball teams and a simulator training space for our golf teams.

We honor the following donors for carrying forward the Honor & Glory campaign to our goal. How New Lights and Turf Fields Are Transforming Latin Athletics

Tim Kelly came to Charlotte Latin School as Head Athletic Trainer in 2007; a decade later, he became an Assistant Athletic Director. He now exhibits his airtraffic-control skills by coordinating the schedules for the school’s teams, facilities, and staff: Latin has over 60 teams, including varsity squads and JV teams — plus Middle School teams and the Talons program. His job has become somewhat easier this year. With overwhelming support from the Latin community, the Honor & Glory campaign raised nearly eight million dollars, allowing for a new turf field, an auxiliary gym adjacent to the Strength Center, a multisport training facility, and stadium lights over Field 2. 28 Charlotte Latin School

Kelly is also head of the Girls’ Golf program; under his leadership this past year, the Varsity Girls’ Golf team won its first state championship (which means that every varsity team at Latin has now won at least one state title). Recognizing that run, the Charlotte Observer named him Girls’ Golf Coach of the Year; Kelly was also honored by Charlotte Latin this year with the Cross-Divisional Inlustrate Orbem Award. In conversation in his office — festooned with walkietalkies, an hourglass, and a well-used whiteboard — he illuminated the impact of the new facilities.

How have the new lights and fields changed Latin athletics?

The number one thing is that it provides flexibility. Daylight is limited, especially in the late fall and the early spring. If the weather is funky, rather than canceling a game or moving it to a different date, we can just move the location. If there’s too much rain, a soccer game that traditionally plays at Patten Stadium can now play on the synthetic field. When some fields are unplayable, we can still keep the rhythm of our schedule relatively normal.

Another piece comes with our Boys’ and Girls’ Lacrosse programs in the spring and Field Hockey in the fall. They generally play JV and varsity back to back. And what happened a lot was that JV games would get cut short because of daylight. But now, a lot of the time we flip them: we play our JV games first and our varsity games second. So we don’t have our younger kids hanging around, hoping to play. It was an intentional decision to get the kids in JV, who are primarily younger, home first, because they haven’t developed the same understanding of the rhythm of their schoolwork.

Are there benefits that you didn’t fully anticipate?

The environment at Field 2 for an evening game is pretty special. Boys’ Lacrosse used to play a lot in Patten Stadium, but the last couple of years, they want to play all their games on Field 2. I think they like the intimacy: the fans are closer to the field. And if you’re driving down Providence Road, it’s pitch black everywhere but you see this game being played under bright lights. That brings me joy.

How does the weather forecast affect practices and games now?

We always used to be guessing the best strategy with the weather when a storm was coming in. We don’t stress about it as much as we used to, knowing that we have facilities where we can practice and play. For the most part, we can play on when it’s raining — lightning, that’s a different story. When we moved games more often, there were spiraling effects: maybe a parent set up a business trip on Wednesday because their kid was playing on a Tuesday, but then the game would

get bumped. Being able to stick to the schedule helps the whole community.

Have the lights opened up new possibilities?

Our general goal is to get the games played and get the kids home, but we’ve had some requests for later starts for senior nights, perhaps 6:00 p.m. instead of 4:30 p.m. When we installed the turf field in 2018, we did a good job of thinking forward by building The Hub. There’s an athletic training room out there, plus bathrooms, concessions, and locker rooms. We thought having that field would expand use — adding lights brings it full circle.

As a golf coach, are you looking forward to the new HIT Center?

Coach [Chris] Berger [’89] does the boys’ program; I do the girls’ program. The guys in the boys’ program practice a lot on their own and play matches together. The girls’ program, we’re developing them as players more. Right now we go to an offcampus driving range on a mini-bus, they hit balls for 45 minutes, and then we head back. Having a facility with a golf simulator on campus is incredibly beneficial. It’s similar to how we’re very fortunate with swimming: a lot of programs in our conference and state don’t have pools on their campus. We can provide more opportunities and we’re really excited about it.

What’s the best thing about these improvements?

It gives us all the flexibility in the world and it allows kids to get home earlier. Time — that’s a priceless commodity. 2025–26 Gratitude Report 29

MY LATIN

STORY Trey Morgan

Honor & Glory Co-Chair; Parent of Mallory ’25, Ben ’27, Sam ’29 The first moment I felt deeply connected with Charlotte Latin was probably our first Grandparents’ Day — it was a unique show and such a great way of building community.

Over the years, we’ve spent a lot of time in Latin’s gyms and at the school’s athletic fields, whether it was my daughter doing cheerleading and field hockey, my middle son playing basketball and now commentating for the sports teams, and my youngest son who’s done wrestling, football, and lacrosse. The coaches make the athletics program special — there are so many special coaches here, and they make such a big difference in students’ lives. That’s one of the reasons I agreed to co-chair Honor & Glory with Gabi Gorelick. I think we overperformed — we got all the projects funded, plus the multipurpose facility — and I’m really proud of our community.

No strangers to the sidelines, Kimber and Trey Morgan celebrate Mallory’s senior night alongside Ben and Sam Morgan. Trey Morgan and Gabi Gorelick at the Honor & Glory kickoff with Latin coaches and leadership.

2025–26 Gratitude Report 31

Charlotte Latin School is famed for its Core Values, its commitment to fostering leadership in its students, and its long-standing excellence in the classroom. The foundation for those traditions: a vibrant school community that embraces and welcomes all students, families, faculty, and staff. Our school’s culture and sense of community is felt across campus and far beyond — it extends to alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, friends, and further. We are all Hawks and we all want the best for Charlotte Latin. Latin would not be Latin without the collaborative parent-school partnerships realized through Parents’ Council, Booster Club, and Latin Arts Association. Each parent volunteer group shares the goals of building community, school spirit, and supporting excellence at Charlotte Latin. Booster Club focuses its efforts on athletics and the LAA on the arts; the remit of Parents’ Council is to support Latin’s faculty, staff, and larger community. To the hand-raisers, time-givers, and community builders – thank you for making Charlotte Latin home. 32 Charlotte Latin School

Parents’ Council strengthens the Latin parent community by fostering connections and relationships that enrich our school culture. These volunteers work tirelessly to lift up our faculty and staff, welcome our newest families, and bring fellow parents together so that everyone feels seen and connected.

PARENTS’ COUNCIL 2025–26 HIGHLIGHTS Volunteers spearheaded a new social event, Tennis + Tiles, to build fellowship and connection around friendly competition. Parents were invited to the Levine Athletic Campus for morning rounds of tennis and mahjong, followed by lunch and prizes. The Holiday Helpers returned to the Forum to create a joy-filled workshop, inviting all faculty, staff, and coaches to bring their holiday gifts for wrapping. On the Friday before May Day Play Day, parent volunteers organized a Lower School Buddy Run in Patten Stadium for our youngest Hawks. The race was also for the young at heart: parents joined in the fun with a race of their own, running around the track while wearing inflatable costumes.

Excerpts from the remarks by Head of School Chuck Baldecchi at the Commencement Exercises on May 22, 2026: As I look out at the 145 of you, I am struck by a distinct energy. You didn’t just walk through your senior year; you rallied through it. You brought back a sense of school spirit and collective joy that we haven’t seen on this campus in years. It was contagious, spreading from the Upper School all the way down to the Nest. You are a class of immense, staggering talent. Twenty-five of you are going on to play collegiate sports next year. Your college admission profile is one of the strongest we’ve seen. Our arts programs didn’t just perform this year; they shined because you were leading them. But talent alone doesn’t change the culture of a school. Alignment does. Spirit does. Class of 2026, as you head off to your respective colleges, labs, athletic fields, and art studios, you are going to be tempted to focus solely on your individual goals. But don’t forget the magic of what you did here. Look at the person to your left and your right. Sister Sledge sang, “Get all your sisters and your brothers with you.” You brought us along for a heck of a ride this year. Thank you for showing us what it means to be a family. 34 Charlotte Latin School

MY LATIN

STORY Nikki and Victor Perez Parents of Olivia ’38 and Sofia

Victor: We met in Hawaii when I was in the Navy. We soon moved to South Bend, Indiana, where I taught in the ROTC program at Notre Dame. About ten years ago, we moved sight unseen to Charlotte for my new job. I told Nikki that we’d stay here for a year or two and then we would move to New York or Miami. Now we’ve built a beautiful home here and hope we never have to move — funny how that works. Nikki: As soon as we got here, we started hearing about Charlotte Latin. There are other great schools in town, but when we had kids and visited Latin, it immediately felt special to us. Victor: When you’re in a military family, you’re always jumping around, but now we’re establishing roots and building community, which plays into why we care so much about Latin. Nikki: We had a funny misunderstanding at the Girls Night Out dance this year. I got my girls dressed up for it, assuming it was a mommy-daughter dance, but when I got there, I discovered that it was intended to be a daddy-daughter dance. I called Victor: “You need to hurry up and get over here.” It all worked out and I connected with other moms who had done the same thing — it was a fun night out. Victor: I was literally caulking our kitchen when she called, but I jumped in the shower and put on a suit. Instead of a daddy-daughter dance, it turned into a whole family affair for all of us.

go and listen, we feel better informed about our children and things we might be missing as parents. That’s how it works at Latin: we have resources at our fingertips. Whenever something comes up, there’s someone we can talk to. That’s a major advantage that supports the students and their education. Victor: As soon as we got in, we knew we wanted to help support the school. I feel about Latin the same way that I feel about the Naval Academy: that school was an inflection point in my life. I believe Latin is setting a strong foundation for Olivia and will set her on a positive track in life. Instilling integrity and “Honor Above All” in students is critically important. We know that Latin students are going to grow up to be wonderful adults. Nikki: Just walking around campus, we see where the money’s going.

Victor: We feel privileged in being able to support the school, Nikki: We’ve really appreciated our experience with Natalie Moore, the especially when we know it’s being put to good use and directly Lower School counselor. She puts on programs for parents: when we impacts the daily life of students, faculty, and staff.

2025–26 Gratitude Report 69

Part of why I donate to Charlotte Latin is because I can think back to teachers who inspired me and taught me there was no cutting corners. So much of what I’ve accomplished is because of all the people at Latin who believed in me. Right after I graduated from college, I didn’t have my own money to donate to Latin, so I would call my dad and ask him to send in something to support the school. These days, I donate my own money. Even if I don’t ever have kids who go to Latin, I want to make sure I’m part of the continued legacy of Latin.

In the 2026–27 school year, we will introduce the Founders Circle, recognizing those who give gifts of $25,000 or more to the Latin Fund. The name evokes the storied history of Charlotte Latin — and the small band of educators and parents who had the vision and courage to create a new educational institution. We all benefit from the history we share, the Core Values we believe in, and the future we build together. Founders Circle members will be invited to the Latin Society Leadership Evening, the Soar Circle Dinner, and a meal with Head of School Chuck Baldecchi. Also this year, we are relaunching True Blue as a giving society for our youngest alumni. Hawks who graduated in the past 15 years are eligible to join by making a commitment to the future of Latin and will be celebrated for gifts that align with their graduation years. Alumni who graduated before 2011 who wish to demonstrate their leadership are warmly invited to join the Latin Society. The Charlotte Latin community thrives because of its support from alumni, current families, and friends of the school.
