As we settle into the summer season, there is a renewed sense of energy throughout Charlotte City Club Each week, we continue to welcome more members into the Club for breakfast meetings, business lunches, networking, family dinners, and social gatherings. Watching the Club become a greater part of our members’ daily lives has been one of the most rewarding aspects of this new chapter.

Over the past several months, our team has remained focused on strengthening both the member experience and the operational foundation that supports it. While much of this work has taken place behind the scenes, many of the benefits are now becoming evident throughout the Club.
One of our most significant transitions has been the successful implementation of our new Northstar Club Management platform A transition of this magnitude is never without challenges, and I sincerely appreciate the patience and understanding our members have shown throughout the process. With this new technology now in place, we are positioned to provide improved member service, more efficient financial processing, enhanced communications, and a stronger operational infrastructure that will serve the Club well into the future.
Our commitment extends well beyond technology.
Every day, our team is working to elevate the overall member experience—from the moment you arrive until the time when we’re Our expanded operating journals have created new opportunities to enjoy breakfast, conduct business over lunch, most colleagues for an afternoon cocktail, or spend an evening with family and friends. Whether you’re a visitor for an hour or an entire day, our goal is to make Charlotte City Club a place that naturally fits into your professional and personal routine.
Hospitality is built through consistency, attention to detail, and genuine relationships Those principles continue to guide every decision we make as we build upon the proud tradition of Charlotte City Club while thoughtfully shaping its future.
Beyond our Club, your membership continues to grow in value.
This summer, members are enjoying our inaugural Carolina Passport, offering reciprocal dining experiences between Charlotte City Club, Harbour Club in Charleston, and City Club Greeneville. Whether you are planning a weekend getaway, traveling for business, or simply looking for a new dining destination, your membership now extends beyond Charlotte and into three of the Carolina’s most vibrant cities This program represents just one of many opportunities made possible through our growing family of BNG Hospitality clubs.
Looking ahead, we remain equally focused on growing our membership community. New corporate partnerships, expanded networking opportunities, engaging affinity clubs, and thoughtfully curated member programming are all designed to strengthen the connections that make this Club so special Every new member and every new relationship enriches the experience for our entire community.

None of this progress would be possible without the extraordinary dedication of our team. Throughout months of change and transition, they have remained steadfast in their commitment to providing exceptional hospitality while embracing new systems, new processes, and new opportunities to serve our members. Their professionalism and dedication deserve my sincere appreciation.
As always, thank you for your continued confidence, your valuable feedback, and your engagement with the Club, Charlotte City Club has a rich history built upon relationships, tradition, and community. Today, we are building upon that foundation while embracing new opportunities that will ensure the Club remains relevant, vibrant, and valuable for generations to come.
We have accomplished a great deal together over the past several months, but I firmly believe the most exciting chapters are still ahead.
I look forward to seeing you at the Club.
Warm regards,
Brett Curley, CCM

Bourbon: 2 oz (or rye whiskey)

In the 1700’s many sailors from a multitude of countries suffered from scurvy due to long sea voyages and the lack of citrus fruits in their diet thus causing a deficiency in vitamin C. The Sailors often used whiskey or rum along with sugar and molasses to create the early versions of what would become the Whiskey Sour. These creative practices laid the foundation for the sour family of cocktails, which balance sweet and sour flavors with a spirit base.
The first documented recipe for a Whiskey Sour appeared in 1862 in Jerry Thomas’s book The Bartender’s Guide: How To Mix Drinks The recipe included whiskey, lemon juice, sugar, and sometimes egg white to create a frothy texture This early version was served over shaved ice in a small bar glass, differing slightly from modern presentations but establishing the core flavor profile

By the 1870s, the Whiskey Sour had gained recognition in the United States. A 1870 edition of the Waukesha Plain Dealer in Wisconsin mentioned the drink, and in 1872, a former ship steward named Elliott Stubb reportedly created a Whiskey Sour in Iquique, Peru, using local citrus The cocktail became especially popular during the California Gold Rush, as whiskey was widely available and miners favored the refreshing, tangy drink.
Over time, the Whiskey Sour evolved with regional and stylistic variations. Adding egg white created the Boston Sour, while floating red wine on top produced the New York Sour. When made with Scotch, it is called a Scotch Sour If the libation adds brandy and/or orange juice, it becomes a Stone Sour
The Whiskey Sour helped establish whiskey as a staple in American bars and contributed to the broader cocktail culture of the 19th and 20th centuries. Its balance of sweet, sour, and spirit-forward flavors made it a favorite among both casual drinkers and connoisseurs, and it remains a classic cocktail in bars worldwide

What drew you to a career in private events and creating memorable experiences?
I have always loved hosting people and creating memorable experiences There is something incredibly rewarding about being part of life's most important celebrations and milestones I am passionate about helping bring people together and creating events that become lifelong memories for our guests.

Top Left: Julia is at opening day of the brand new Puttshack location in Dallas. Julia was a part of the opening team and worked as their Senior Sales Manager
Bottom Left: On this day, she had hosted 18 events in one day, a record day at the company!

What is something members might be surprised to learn about you?
I practice yoga regularly I was also born in Las Vegas, Nevada, which is always a fun fact that catches people off guard!
What excites you most about joining our team as Director of Private Events?
I am excited to help establish Charlotte City Club as one of Charlotte's premier event destinations. The Club has such a unique setting and rich history, and I look forward to showcasing it as the place where people choose to celebrate their biggest moments and most important occasions
What are some of the details that can transform a good event into an unforgettable experience?
Anyone can execute a good event, but an unforgettable event is one where the team anticipates guests' needs before they have to ask It's about going the extra mile, providing exceptional service, and incorporating thoughtful personal touches that make guests feel valued and cared for throughout the experience

What trends in events are you excited about right now?
I love the trend of incorporating fruits and vegetables into floral designs. Replacing some traditional florals with colorful citrus, berries, or other produce adds a sense of whimsy and personality Many events can take themselves a little too seriously, and I think this trend brings a fun, creative element that makes celebrations feel fresh and memorable
How can members connect with you when they are ready to start planning their next event?
I am always happy to discuss upcoming events and celebrations Members can reach me by phone or email, and I would love the opportunity to help plan something truly special
Top Right: Julia worked at the Brookhaven Country Club as their Private Events Director They hosted the PPA pickleball tournament with over 25,000 attendees
Bottom Right: At Lost Creek Country Club, Julia is pictured with team members as they hosted the Charity Golf Tournament for Children’s Health

Top Left: Katie started her career at Universal Studios Orlando in Event Operations
Bottom Left: As an Event Operations Manager with Tavistock, Katie oversaw hundreds of events a year She is pictured here testing out the roller rink at an American Heart Assoication fundraiser on a rooftop parking garage
Communications and events require a lot of teamwork, what do you enjoy most about collaborating with others?

I love collaborating with a team because everyone is pulling from their various experiences As a solutionoriented person, it’s a great resource to have other team members who can offer input and creative solutions that may never have occurred to me
What is one event or project from your career that you are especially proud of?
A few come to mind, but one that really challenged my capability as an Event Manager was pulling off a one-day music festival in less than three months in an empty field with a very low budget. It taught me a lot about resourcefulness and showed me that nothing is truly impossible, you might just have to work a little harder
What is your approach to making sure members feel informed, included, and connected?
I believe communication is key The goal is to not have anyone say, “Oh, I wasn’t aware we had an event like that ” I want to make sure all members are well informed as well as have a say in the type of events that are at the Club. These events are for our members so it’s integral to form them around concepts and ideas that are important to them
What is one thing that always catches your attention when you walk into a room or attend an event?

I am such a stickler for trash cans! Every public event I attend, I always feel like there could be more trash cans. To me, there is no such things as too many. Also, I die a little inside when I see a table without a linen I’ve hammered this into my husband’s brain so much that he rented linen for our engagement celebration
What is a passion or hobby that you could talk about for hours?
I went through a huge Escape Room phase I have completed over 100 escape rooms, in three different countries, and I have a 75% win rate. I had to stop doing them because I took them too seriously
Top Right: As an Event Production Manager, Katie acquired permitting and negoitated contracts for Big Bounce America - the Guisiness Book of World Records Largest Bounce Houses!
Bottom Right: Katie recieved her Masters Degree in Tourism and Hospitality Managemenet from the University of Central Florida’s Rosen College of Hospitality.

Tell us a little about your journey at the Club and how you first became part of the team.
I started working at Charlotte City Club during a pivotal time in my life. What began as a new opportunity quickly became so much more Working here helped me step outside of my shy shell, build confidence, and connect with both our members and my coworkers It's been a place where I've grown personally as well as professionally
What has been the most exciting part about stepping into this new role?
The most exciting part has been the opportunity to grow, learn new skills, and interact with our members in a whole new way Every day brings something different, and I really enjoy finding new ways to help create a great experience for our members.
What do you find rewarding with your role at the Club?
One of the most rewarding parts of my job is helping members create once in a lifetime memories. Whether it's celebrating a milestone, hosting a special event, or simply bringing family and friends together, it's meaningful to know I've played a small part in those moments
What is your favorite Club tradition or experience?
One of my favorite traditions is seeing longtime members come back year after year for our annual events I think watching generations of families continue that tradition really shows what makes Charlotte City Club so special.
As you grow in your new role, what are you most looking forward to bringing to the member experience?

Following someone who dedicated 26 years to the Club certainly means I have big shoes to fill I'm excited to continue learning, building relationships with our members, and making every experience as seamless and enjoyable as possible.
Bottom

Welcome to the club! Can you tell our members a little about yourself and your journey in the hospitality industry?
My journey with F&B began from an early age here in NC My first job was for the Boy Scout of America as a summer camp counselor at Camp Grimes in 1993 I worked at the waterfront as a lifeguard and merit badge instructor for lifesaving and small boat sailing Every member of staff learned how to work and help in the Dining Hall, learning how a kitchen works and is to be cleaned and maintained I began a position as a server in Charlotte the following Autumn This began decades of F&B adventure I have since worked in restaurants (casual and fine dining), hotels, resorts, clubs, and night clubs in Charlotte, Orlando, Miami, Chicago, and St Lucia

Bottom

Outside of the club, how do you like to spend your time?
I have studied Qi Gong Kung Fu since 1993 and have been an instructor since 1997 earning my first degree of black in 2005. I also enjoy attending Highland Games and Celtic music festivals around the country
I find solace and respite most days in my garden I have carnivorous plants, vegetable/fruit beds and bonsai trees that I have grown from seeds This year I hope to build a new greenhouse If you cannot find me at home, I'll be doing something nerdy; Movies, libraries, museums, art exhibits, comic-cons, hiking, camping, or playing D&D.
What is your personal philosophy when it comes to service?
Approach each situation with compassion Seek to understand the three perspectives of each situation Lack of perspective is a leading cause of problematic beginnings. I try to be transparent with my approach and set realistic & achievable expectations Be adaptable, creative, and at all times present Personally, I am a storyteller I believe that amazing connections are cultivated in the stories we share with each other, whether anecdotally or created in real time
How do you hope to enhance the food and beverage experience at the club?

By giving our staff the tools and fund of knowledge to elevate their skills, each will be able to develop their own styles and individual approach while maintaining consistency By establishing a threshold of expectations, we can ensure that the Member experience is the top priority.
What is one dish, ingredient, or beverage you are especially passionate about?
The wine list is my passion To create a list that is elegant, comprehensive and exciting to a wide array of distinctive palates The list should have variety as well as well-known favorites without being overly esoteric Quality, flavor profiles, sustainability and best industry practices are key factors when choosing a selection for the list Rotating features and by-the-glass selections will always be tailored to compliment the Chef's creations for the menu of the season
How can members connect with you and share their feedback or ideas?
Feedback is the greatest gift I can receive from members. It is the best way to hear a multitude of ideas and constructive criticism that allows us to address concerns and to grow Members can share on the app or email me directly at bblackman@charlottecityclub com
