Dear Charlotte Catholic Parents, Alumni, and Friends, What an exciting time to be part of the CCHS community! As we look back on another school year, I am both grateful for and proud to be a part of the Catholic family. I hope you share my gratitude for the excellent and committed faculty and staff at CCHS, along with the many parent and alumni volunteers who support us in many ways. I am proud of the Class of 2019 and all they have accomplished. They are beginning the next chapter of their lives armed with tools acquired while growing academically, socially and, most importantly, in their faith during their years at Catholic. They know as young alumni they are always welcomed back, and we hope to see them at Homecoming this fall. I am also incredibly thankful for the hard work of so many people toward the year’s most exciting news – our long-awaited school expansion! We look forward with excitement to our future, and the future is bright. In the spring of 2019, we launched the Expanding the Vision, Honoring the Tradition Capital Campaign to expand our school. Decades in the planning, this expansion will provide a fine arts center complete with performance, classroom, and display spaces for all visual and performing arts, and will be shared with all Mecklenburg Area Catholic Schools. Spaces freed up in the existing building will be renovated for additional athletic spaces, and classroom and learning spaces will be restructured so that every teacher will have a classroom. With the support of our community, this dream is becoming a reality. We are well on our way toward our campaign goal of $8 million. $23 million is the overall building project cost, and $15 million of that has already been committed through MACS capital fees. Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2020. I have been honored and humbled to meet with members of the Catholic community over the past few months who want to leave a legacy by contributing to this important campaign. Thank you to those who have already pledged so generously. It has been 30 years since CCHS has conducted any kind of capital campaign, and I am grateful to all of the volunteers and contributors who have rallied around it and have pledged thus far. I hope that you will prayerfully consider a pledge that will impact CCHS students in the very near future and for generations to come. excellence in academics For the Class of 2019, 456 college scholarships were awarded to 158 graduates, for a total awarded scholarship amount of $19,652,500 THE CCHS CLASS OF 2019 • 285 graduates • 100% graduation rate, and 100% of graduates were accepted to one or more colleges, including top tier universities such as Dartmouth, Davidson, and Notre Dame • 97% of graduates chose four-year colleges, and 3% chose two-year colleges • Two graduates accepted appointments to the Naval Academy and the Coast Guard Academy Our faculty members challenge each student to think critically, to read purposefully, to write effectively, and to communicate clearly in order to reach his or her full, God-given potential.

visual and performing arts The 2018-2019 academic year was made memorable by many performances and works of art, including: ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY: CCHS welcomed Mrs. Missy Rich and Ms. Melissa McManus to the Visual Art Department this year. Each brings many new ideas to combine with the experience of Mrs. Joann Keane. They organized and hosted a Visual Art Show in May, which was well-attended and a huge success. BAND: The Charlotte Catholic Marching Band performed in the St. Patrick’s Day Parades in Dublin and Limerick, Ireland, and was named Best Youth Band and Best Overall Band. Ian Adamson, Niko Badalamenti, Corey Brenner, Jane Corah, Emma Joseph, Patrick Macalintal, Casey McGuire, Austin Munn, Sophie Roper, Astrid Salinas, Rachel Sarvey, Matthew Sie, and Megan Sie represented Charlotte Catholic well at the All-District Band Competition.
Our Visual and Performing Arts department is a source of great pride within our curriculum, and our Fine Arts instructors truly know how to inspire their students and bring out their God-given talents. CHORUS: This year, CCHS welcomed new Director of Choral Music Mr. John Shusdock, who brings a wealth of knowledge and skill to the performing arts at CCHS. Christmas and spring choral concerts were highlights of the year, and our choirs were seen frequently around Charlotte, entertaining nursing home residents and performing at sporting events. THEATRE: CCHS audiences were treated to Meet Me in St. Louis, a three-act comedy, in October. Theatre Director Mr. Marcus Riter and his students earned high honors at the 2018 North Carolina Theatre Conference (NCTC) High School Play Festival, where they presented Beyond the Door and Shuddersome Tales of Poe. They brought home nine awards, including Excellence in Design and Production, the Festival Spirit Award, and Excellence in Directing for Mr. Riter. They advanced to compete at the NCTC “State Championships of Theatre” in November, and earned three more awards: Excellence in Choreography, Excellence in Design and Production, and the Festival Spirit Award. VERBESEY AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION In 2007, Herb and Tess Verbesey established the Award for Excellence in Education as a way to recognize and encourage an outstanding faculty member who demonstrates a record of contagious enthusiasm for classroom teaching, stimulates extraordinary accomplishments in students according to their abilities, builds students’ desire to learn, and treats students with dignity and respect. The 2019 winner of the Verbesey Award for Excellence in Education is Mrs. Karen Eggebrecht, who teaches Honors Algebra 2, Statistics, and AP Statistics.
Learn from the Best to Become the Best Charlotte Catholic’s teachers live the mission statement every day by inspiring a love of and a respect for learning. Exceptionally dedicated faculty create classroom environments that challenge students to think critically and creatively as they grow in their faith. The 2018-19 faculty included five members with doctoral degrees and 49 with master’s degrees. In addition, seven faculty members and two staff members are graduates of Charlotte Catholic, and more than 50 have children who attend or are alumni of CCHS.

The CCHS Athletic Association exists to raise funds to support the studentathletes and coaches at Charlotte Catholic. Since CCHS was established in 1955, we have enjoyed a long tradition of excellence in competition, with a total of 77 North Carolina High School Athletic Association championships!

• During the 2018-2019 academic year, 750 students participated in Cougar sports. CCHS had 41 teams competing in 19 sports as members of the Southern Carolina 3A Conference. • Hundreds of parents, grandparents, and friends of CCHS donated thousands of volunteer hours in support of Cougar Nation. •

Charlotte Catholic is expanding!

In April 2019, CCHS publicly announced the long-awaited plans to make a dream a reality. The Expanding the Vision, Honoring the Tradition campaign effort is underway to raise funds needed to renovate the existing campus and build the new MACS Fine Arts Center at CCHS. The CCHS community is raising $8 million toward the $23 million project. $15 million is committed through the existing capital fees paid annually by all families in the MACS system. The resulting CCHS expansion will include a new, state-ofthe-art building for the visual and performing arts and a renovation of existing spaces to create updated athletic facilities and classrooms for teachers who currently do not have them. Construction is planned to start in fall of 2020. The MACS capital fee has helped to finance the construction and renovation of our schools for almost 30 years, and this fee provides the bulk of the funding for this CCHS expansion: MACS Capital Fee Contribution Capital Campaign Goal

called to serve, committed to faith At Charlotte Catholic, faith and service go hand in hand as the Gospel message of Jesus Christ is taught and experienced. Through a comprehensive program which includes campus ministry, the celebration of the Eucharist, prayer services, retreats, and service work, students don’t just deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith and gospel values – they put both into practice. Each CCHS student commits to volunteering 20 hours per year, and most students serve even more. The President’s Volunteer Service Award was presented to 110 CCHS students for their commitment to serving others through more than 100 hours of community service. Sixty of those students volunteered more than 250 hours.
2018-19 HIGHLIGHTS IN FAITH DEVELOPMENT, STUDENT SERVICE, AND OUTREACH
CCHS embraced the opportunity to help our fellow North Carolinians after Hurricane Florence devastated the eastern part of our state in September. Donations of cash, gift cards, and hundreds boxes of relief supplies were sent to a Catholic church and school in Morehead City. The third annual Cougar Caritas took place over four separate days, with each class heading out into the greater Charlotte community to help neighbors in need. Students cleaned and organized food pantries, picked up trash along greenways, prepared meals at homeless shelters, and brought gifts and cheer to nursing home residents, giving 5,000+ hours of service. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes continued the tradition of placing a display of flags at the entrance to CCHS on September 11th, in remembrance of the lives lost on that day.
Over spring break, 103 students and 10 teachers traveled to Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico for mission trips. All mission trip participants volunteered during Holy Week repairing homes, working at schools and orphanages, and assisting the Missionaries of the Poor. Continuing a long CCHS tradition, Student Council collected Christmas gifts and gift cards through homerooms, and raised more than $10,000 for Catholic Charities.
The Latin Club once again partnered with the American Red Cross to sponsor two blood drives. More than 200 pints of blood were donated by students and faculty. CCHS welcomed Nashville-based Christian singer-songwriter PJ Anderson for Catholic Schools Week. PJ shared his faith journey with the student body and led them in worship and song throughout the week.
More than 60 different clubs and organizations offer opportunities for CCHS Wrestling hosted the 8th annual CCHS students to serve, lead, and Battle of the Bo, raising more than excel outside of the classroom. $12,000 for Holy Angels in Belmont. The 5th annual Cougars 4 a Cure, hosted by the CCHS basketball teams, raised more than $40,000 for cancer research at Levine Cancer Center. 13
CCHS Foundation Since 1974, the CCHS Foundation has raised funds to support the students and faculty of Charlotte Catholic High School. Over the years, donors to the Foundation have made it possible to respond to changing needs of the school. The Foundation is a non-profit entity governed by a volunteer board committed to its mission of enriching the spiritual, academic, and cultural development of CCHS. The Foundation continues to provide traditional support for classroom grants, need-based tuition assistance, and merit-based scholarships for graduating seniors. In 2018-19, the CCHS Foundation publicly announced its support for the Expanding the Vision, Honoring the Tradition campaign for the school expansion and MACS Fine Arts Center at CCHS. Having played an integral part in keeping the dream alive for decades, the Foundation committed to making the dream a reality by pledging $500,000 toward the campaign’s $8 million goal. The Teacher Impact Fund, created in 2016 at the request of Principal Telford to help retain high-quality teachers, remained a priority for 2018-19 and for years to come. The Teacher Impact Fund was established in response to the need to reward teachers and provide a financial benefit that might assist in retaining our highest-performing teachers. FUNDS FROM TEACHER IMPACT FUND ARE DISTRIBUTED IN TWO WAYS:

The Sister Paulette Williams Awards: Public recognition awards of $5,000 are given to five CCHS teachers each year at graduation.

Teacher Impact Fund Awards: Confidential awards are presented to reward and retain top teachers. Decisions on recipients of these awards are made by CCHS administrators. Funds are raised for the Teacher Impact Fund through hosted events, The Gala, and direct donations.

KARA KLOIBER MAKE A DIFFERENCE AWARD The Kara Kloiber Make a Difference Award was presented this year to Kate Elizabeth Warren ’19. The Kloiber family, whose time at CCHS spans generations, honors Kara’s memory by presenting an annual award to a CCHS senior who embodies Kara’s spirit of always making a difference, no matter how small. Bob Kloiber ’84 and last year’s winner, MeKayla Gough ’18, presented the award.
