Charlotte Catholic High School is an educational community centered in the Roman Catholic faith, which teaches individuals to serve as Christians in our changing world. VISION
Our Charlotte Catholic High School community seeks to inspire Christ-filled lives that are nourished by prayer, charity, and the sacraments, as well as committed to social justice and the dignity of all life, always recognizing the pursuit of academics as a revelation of God’s truth. 2
Dear CCHS Students, Parents and Families, In August 2019, the 2019-20 school year opened as it has for many years – with joyful optimism. Students and faculty returned to campus, sports were underway and everyone explored ways to get involved at CCHS. We celebrated achievements in academics and the arts along with championships in athletics. We finalized plans for our Fine Arts Center and, with gratitude, thanked our growing family of supporters. In March, we shifted gears. A statewide lockdown in response to the Covid-19 pandemic caused us to pause for a day – only a day – and then our students and teachers made a fairly seamless transition to teaching and learning remotely. I was proud of our students for their resilience and grateful to our faculty members who, with very little notice, were able to take their lessons online so that our students could continue to learn. Charlotte Catholic remained in session – virtually – for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, and we discovered creative ways to celebrate the Class of 2020 and all of their successes. Graduation is always my favorite day, and 2020 was no exception. I enjoyed the intimate gatherings of our seniors with their parents as we conducted separate commencement exercises for all of our senior homerooms. We began work on our Safer, Stronger, Together plan immediately after graduation which has proven to be effective as we remain proactive in our efforts to manage COVID-19 in our community and return to in-person instruction. No one could have imagined the disruption to our lives this pandemic has caused, and I am grateful to be a part of a community where we prayerfully face these challenges together. Looking back, while the 2019-20 school year was like no other, what remained the same was the Charlotte Catholic spirit. COVID-19 has changed the way we teach and learn, but our community support has allowed us to continue to thrive in spite of these difficult times. I am inspired by the support each of you has showed to our students and to our community. Thank you for being a part of the Charlotte Catholic family, and for your support of the spiritual, academic and social growth of our students. We hope you enjoy reading this Year in Review. “ For I know the plans I have for you, “ declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 CELEBRATING THE CLASS OF 2020 Graduation was held on campus on May 29, 2020 due to special circumstances that called for smaller gatherings. Plans were in place for ceremonies that could have been conducted either in the stadium or the gym, and inclement weather moved them inside. Each graduate was accompanied by his or her parents or family members in what turned out to be a special, personal, and memorable day. Graduation plans included extra measures to help ensure the health and safety of all attendees, and to comply with social distancing orders in effect. After each graduate crossed the stage, they joined their parents in a designated area to watch the other graduates in their homeroom. After the entire homeroom had walked across the stage, they were declared graduates and then departed the school with family. The valedictorian was Mae Levin, who is attending the University of Notre Dame. All graduation and senior events were shared through video links or livestream. CCHS held its annual Senior Awards Ceremony on May 27th, honoring members of the Class of 2020 for their commitment to faith, service, sportsmanship and academic excellence. Principal Kurt Telford welcomed students virtually, as this year’s ceremony was pre-recorded and shared through social media channels and the school website. During the Senior Awards Ceremony, eight prestigious college scholarships were also awarded, all provided by generous donors and CCHS affiliate organizations. Winners listed on page seven.

VALEDICTORIAN – MAE LEVIN The CCHS Class of 2020 Valedictorian is Mae Elizabeth Levin. Mae is attending University of Notre Dame majoring in Mathematics and International Economics. Mae served CCHS and the greater Charlotte community in many ways during her high school career. Her passion for helping others is evidenced by her involvement as an Attorney for the Mecklenburg County Teen Court, as a Page in the North Carolina House of Representatives, and as an Intern for the Hunt for House Campaign. At Charlotte Catholic, she served as a member of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Committee, the Speech and Debate team, the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society, and the Latin National Honor Society, as well as serving as a Eucharistic Minister.
SALUTATORIAN – SOPHIE ROPER Sophie is attending the Stevens Institute of Technology in the Fall and is major in a Computer Engineering/Technology area to include Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. Sophie is an accomplished musician and leader in the CCHS Bands. She was selected for AllDistrict and All-State Honor Bands in North Carolina, the Charlotte Youth Wind Ensemble, and the Charlotte Youth Orchestra, with which she performed at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. Sophie served her school and local community in many ways, including as a STEM Revolution Camp intern, teaching science to elementary and middle school students. A prolific baker, she founded Greater Good Cookies, donating profits from her homemade cookies to causes she supports. At Charlotte Catholic, she was the Science Olympiad Team Captain and a Finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. Sophie was a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, and Rho Kappa Social Studies Honors Society.

“I have enjoyed my experience so far at the Naval Academy. It is definitely an awesome place filled with great people. While it can be very challenging most of the time, I have learned keeping a good attitude is the best thing to do. Charlotte Catholic prepared me for challenges by teaching me time management skills, giving me a family feeling, and showing me how to keep striving for my goals. I have learned that failure is part of the process for growth. Whether you lose a game, fail a test, or feel like you are lacking in your faith life, it should not make you feel like you are a failure, instead it should just be a little reminder that you need to keep pushing for that improvement. The faith that Catholic has provided me has helped me get through rough moments where I have questioned my abilities. I am so grateful to call Charlotte Catholic home and I appreciate every teacher, coach, counselor and friend that has helped me along this journey. A new Veterans’ Day tradition was started at CCHS – a dinner for local veterans hosted by the Rho Kappa social studies honor society. A concert was presented at the event by the CCHS Symphonic Band.

Charlotte Catholic continues to foster a sense of community and commitment to serving others in many ways. While some of the spring service opportunities were cancelled due to COVID-19, CCHS students still made quite an impact during the 2019-20 school year.

CCHS students volunteered the summer of 2019 at Camp Soar, a place for Special Olympics athletes to attend summer camp. CCHS students work at the camp as “buddies” assisting participants in a variety of sports. Each year, the Charlotte Catholic Student Council partners with Catholic Charities to ensure children and families in need have a merry Christmas. Charlotte Catholic parents, students, faculty, staff, counselors, and administrators participated in this school-wide Christmas project. Together, CCHS students served over 60 children and 10 families in an effort to fill the children’s Christmas wish lists and meet the needs of the families during the holiday season. As always, the entire Charlotte Catholic community responded with great enthusiasm and generosity. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes continued the tradition of placing a display of flags at the entrance of CCHS on September 11th in remembrance of lives lost that day.

heroism CCHS Students put faith into actions in many ways, including four of them who helped a family after a tragic car accident. Maddie Petho, Tony Nassar, Lucy Petho and Anthony Johnson were commended for jumping into action and impacting the lives of a local family.
7th annual Cougars for a Cure raised more than $50,000 The 7th annual Cougars for a Cure, hosted by the CCHS basketball teams, raised more than $50,000 for cancer research at the Levine Cancer Center.

C E L E B R AT I N G C AT H O L I C S C H O O L S Catholic Schools Week gave an opportunity to celebrate faith with teachers, students, volunteers, donors and parents. The highlights of the week included Mass with Bishop Jugis, a volunteer and donor luncheon, coin wars, with winners getting to throw pies in the face of Mr. Telford and Coach Christmas, and the seniors v. faculty basketball tournament.

The CCHS Visual Art Department hosted its second annual Art Exhibition in January. Awards were presented while students, parents, and CCHS community members mingled, enjoyed refreshments, and admired the work of all our talented visual art students. The fall play “Hit and Misdemeanor” was performed by students from the Acting and Honors Acting classes. All sets and costumes were assembled and designed by Theatre students. Student members of the performing arts department brought home honors from the 2019 North Carolina Theatre Conference (NCTC) High School Play Festival in October. The CCHS Theatre Department, led by Marcus Riter, was awarded the following:

Charlotte Catholic High School Athletic Association The Charlotte Catholic High School Athletic Association has operated for more than 40 years to organize and promote the development of respectful, faith-filled athletes throughout participation in interscholastic sports. They provide support and encouragement for the athletic and personal achievements of the students of CCHS, by volunteering time, contributing financial backing and fundraising for the success of our athletic teams. The main revenue sources for the Athletic Association are funds from gate and concessions, Cougar Club passes, sponsorships, donations, participation fees as well as golf and tennis tournaments. All of these funds help to pay for facility rentals, coaching stipends, field maintenance, referees, uniforms and team support. In 2019-20, the main stadium field and beloved practice field “The Pit” were graded and recrowned. Artificial turf was added to the perimeter of the stadium to prevent wear in the high traffic areas. Hundreds of parents, family members and friends volunteered thousands of hours in support of our student athletes. Charlotte Catholic’s teachers live the mission statement every day by inspiring a love of and respect for learning. Exceptionally dedicated faculty create classroom environments that challenge students to think critically and creatively as they grow in their faith. 2019-20 brought new challenges as CCHS moved to full remote learning in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Teachers and students worked together to keep CCHS open virtually and to finish the year strong.
committed E X C E L L E N C E I N E D U C AT I O N - V E R B E S E Y AWA R D Principal Kurt Telford presented the $10,000 Verbesey Award for Excellence in Education to Beth Acitelli, IT Director at CCHS. Mrs. Acitelli was instrumental in leading Charlotte Catholic to remote instruction and distance learning for the end of the 2019-20 school year. The Verbesey Award is given in memory of Tess Verbesey, a former guidance counselor and beloved member of the CCHS Community for 50 years.

covid-19 CHARLOTTE CATHOLIC COMMUNITY STAYED TOGETHER – VIRTUALLY No one could have imagined the disruption to lives during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. Never before has Charlotte Catholic faced such a challenge – to continue to provide an excellent education to it’s nearly 1,200 students – while the physical campus was closed due to the state mandate. Cougar pride and resilience was evident as faculty, staff and students quickly moved to distance learning and online programs. While spring sports and performances were eventually cancelled, parents and coaches rallied to celebrate the senior members of each team and group. The doors to the building were temporarily closed, but CCHS was very much alive thanks to the support of parents and the extended CCHS Community.
Mr. Telford hosted an Instagram Live session with the class of 2020 along with virtual “Koffee with Kurt” sessions with parents and students, including the Class of 2024.
Faculty members stuck together during the crisis, attending weekly faculty meetings via Zoom. Math teachers were provided iPads to help teach online lessons.

SISTER PAULETTE WILLIAMS, RSM AWARDS FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE Each year at Graduation, the CCHS Foundation presents five teachers with the Sister Paulette Williams, RSM Awards for Outstanding Service. Through the generous support of donors to the CCHS Foundation’s Teacher Impact Fund, these teachers are recognized for exceptional dedication, knowledge and commitment which inspires students to learn. They exhibit the best qualities of faith and mercy in their interaction with students as well as with colleagues. They consistently go above and beyond, making a difference in the lives of CCHS students and the school community. Diane Kloiber, pictured with her husband Joe Kloiber, Sr., served the CCHS Foundation for seven years as a board member. The Kloiber Family and their company, Tech South, have generously supported Charlotte Catholic and its students for many years, establishing the Kara Ann Kloiber Make a Difference Award for an outstanding graduating senior as well as the Kara Ann Kloiber Memorial Scholarship. Both of these are in memory of their daughter Kara Kloiber ’93 who cherished her time at Charlotte Catholic High School. She saw her school as her faith community where friends lasted forever and teachers became family. Kara was tragically killed in a car accident in 1997. The scholarship fund was established in her name, knowing she would want to continue to help others. In the years since its establishment, this scholarship has benefitted many by providing tuition assistance to those who exemplify Kara’s love and appreciation for CCHS. The Kara Kloiber Make a Difference Award honors a graduating senior who consistently makes a difference in our school and community. The Kara Ann Kloiber Award was presented to Christian George Alston.
forward thinking Although the pandemic has changed how we live our everyday lives, the need to support Charlotte Catholic High School has not. The Teacher Impact Fund continues to be the CCHS Foundation’s largest initiative. Since it was created in 2016 as a means to help retain high-quality teachers, the CCHS Foundation has funded more than $320,000 in merit-based awards in addition to $100,000 in Sister Paulette Williams Awards. The 2020 Gala raised more than $225,000 and brought together hundreds of parents and supporters of Charlotte Catholic. Fr. Richard Sutter was the guest auctioneer for the live auction.

ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS 2019-2020
COUGARS CARE CCHS engineering professor Dr. Leo Maganares created forty sets of face shields and facemasks for healthcare workers to use during the COVID-19 crisis. Embracing the idea with enthusiasm, the CCHS Foundation and CCHS Alumni Association committed grant funds to help create additional masks and shields, and to purchase additional 3D printers and materials. In all, nearly 1,000 face masks and face shields were created and distributed to CCHS alumni, parents and community members. Charlotte Catholic is grateful to all those healthcare heroes on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

William “Jack” Crosby ’66 has lived in Hot Springs, AR for 26 years. He owns and operates Superior Business Brokerage, managing business sales that convey real estate as part of the offering. He served in the Marine Corps, earned an MBA from California Coast University, and worked in the pharmaceutical industry for many years. Outside of his professional life, Jack has been a member of many civic organizations including Rotary and Master Gardeners. He plays tennis, owns and flies aircraft, plays banjo in a bluegrass band, and is on amateur radio. He and his wife, Alice, live on Lake Hamilton.

The Kelly McArdle construction crew helped the garden and pavilion take shape at St. Gabriel. Danny, Tommy and Jimmy Kelly gave dad Danny Kelly ’90 a hand.
Dead Man’s Banjo, a local acoustic band boasting four Cougar alumni and a parent of two more, has been playing in the Charlotte area for eight years. This versatile band’s cover tunes include country, folk, Irish tunes, pop, and rock from the 60’s through the present day. The band members began playing together occasionally in 2011, and performances soon followed beginning in 2012. The band includes Steve Mayeux ’86, Jay Ostendarp ’85, Erin Thomas ’87, Joel Thomas ’85, and Peter Yarborough, father of Kathryn ’01 and Kirby ’05.

Third grade teacher Nikki Doule’ Warren ’91 delivered ice cream in a truck to all of her St. Gabriel students while her students were learning remotely in the spring of 2020. Her students included Samantha Holmes, daughter of Maurine and Dan Holmes ’90. The Boston Marathon was cancelled, but that didn’t stop Cheryl Hunt Perry ’95 from completing her 26.2 miles by running 33 loops around her neighborhood. Nicole Rademacher ’96 was featured in Forbes Magazine for her work with Drive-By-Art.
Adam McGarity ’00 and his wife, Amanda Champagne McGarity ’00, have opened a veterinary practice in Fort Mill, SC. Adam earned a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from NC State and graduated from Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008. Adam and Amanda have been married for 13 years and have two children, Alister and Claire.

Christine Owczarzak White ’03 is the owner of Christine White Style and Beads Incorporated, both located at 339 Circle Ave. in Charlotte. As a part of her fundraiser, CWS for the Arts, Christine has created a jewelry collection featuring CCHS’ school colors. Each piece sells for $25 and $20 from each sale is donated to the capital campaign for the MACS Fine Arts Center at CCHS. Kevin Harkins ’04 and Taylor Rawlins Harkins ’06 were married on October 19, 2019 at the Dairy Barn at Anne Springs Close Greenway in Fort Mill, SC. The wedding party included best man Corey Carpenter ’04, Brian Harkins ’02, Brendan Morrissey ’04, and Erin Turner Wester ’06. Kevin and Taylor met at CCHS.

Dr. Rachelle Acitelli Reed ’05 is Global Director of Fitness Science at Orangetheory Fitness. She developed a virtual fitness program for Orangetheory for members to continue to workout during the COVID-19 crisis. Rachelle has her PhD in Exercise Science. She has represented Orangetheory on calls with state legislators to discuss the importance of exercise and disinfecting protocols, and is also a featured contributor to the American Heart Association’s member support blog for healthy living tips for those with cardiovascular disease.
Marie White ’08, PhD, MS is a member of a group of labs at UNC School of Medicine conducting basic and clinical research for the COVID-19 pandemic. CCHS graduates are well prepared members of our changing world.

David Belfield ’13 was named an Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Army West Point in August 2019. After graduating from CCHS, David coached one year at Christ the King. He played basketball during his freshman and sophomore years at USC-Aiken, where he was named to the conference All-Academic Team. He transitioned to the coaching staff at Aiken for his junior and senior years. Upon graduation, he served as a Graduate Assistant for one season at UNC-Charlotte, until he was offered the position at Army. Brandon Eckert ’12 graduated summa cum laude from UNC Wilmington with B.A. Anthropology and B.A. German in 2016. He recently received his M.A. in Anthropology from East Carolina University, also summa cum laude. Kyle Eckert ’14 graduated in 2018 from UNC Wilmington with B.S. Business Administration, Management Information Systems and B.A. German. Nicolas Principi ’16 graduated from Elon University on May 22, 2020 with a Bachelor of Science in Administration (Finance & Entrepreneurship) degree. He is working in Charlotte at NTT Data Consulting.
Emma Caponigro ’16 graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Health Policy and Management. Emma was named the 2020 Chancellor’s Awards recipient of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. Established in 1928, this award is bestowed annually upon a graduating senior who has best demonstrated unselfish interest in human welfare, with an emphasis on humanitarian contributions. Emma also was awarded the James P. Dixon Award for Excellence in Education from the Gillings School of Global Public Health. This award is given to an undergraduate with an exemplary academic and service record. 25
Christopher Shallal ’17 has been recognized as a member of a team led by Johns Hopkins University engineers who are developing and prototyping a 3D-printed splitter that will allow a single ventilator to treat multiple patients.

traditions Student traditions include a pep rally where students celebrate athletes and the homecoming court along with the annual homecoming dance. The Alumni Legacy Breakfast and Lunch and Tailgate bring together generations of Cougars. The CCHS Marching Band performs during its traditional pre-game march. CCHS welcomed back more than 200 alumni and their families for homecoming events. Anne Culicerto ’20 was crowned the 2019 Homecoming Queen. She was escorted by her brother Christian Culicerto ’08. Other senior members of the court included Virginia Shea, Ruth Inman Moniz and Mattie McFee. Junior members were Kate Dumser and Anna Flatau. Sophomores were Mallory Hall and Ava Perry, and freshmen were Olivia Midura and Megan Pons. Ava’s mother Cheryl Hunt Perry ’95 (pictured left) was a member of the 1994 homecoming court.

hall of fame H A L L O F FA M E October 18 2019, the CCHS Alumni Association inducted three new members into the Sports Hall of Fame. Ryan Boward ’98, Brian Cowman ’97, and Coach Mary Ann Dey. In 1997, Boward and Cowman won CCHS’ first state championship in men’s doubles, along with a dual-team state championship. Mrs. Dey coached women’s tennis for ten years and put our program on the map with four team state championships and four singles championships in the ’80s and ’90s.

Congratulations to winners “Dirty Like Soap” captained by Owen Winters ’16. This great Cougar tradition pitted fathers against sons along with several sets of brothers for a day of hoops and good times. It’s always great to welcome back alumni along with parents and children of alumni! Following the basketball tournament and a football playoff victory, CCHS alumni gathered to greet classmates and catch up at the annual Alumni Holiday Social at Char Bar on Carmel Road.

upgrade CAMPUS IMPROVEMENTS Cougar athletes and fans enjoyed a newly renovated Oddo Field at Keffer Stadium. Turf was installed around the field perimeter before the kick-off of the 2019 seasons. Principal Kurt Telford led a blessing and dedication ceremony for the newly renovated Alumni Hall. Through contributions to the CCHS Alumni Association, the inside entrance and corridor to the gym were renovated to include a pictorial history of CCHS, Hall of Fame, Hall of Champions along with updated swimming, cross-country and track & field records. A new vestibule was added to the main entrance to the school to upgrade security and welcome all visitors to CCHS. Visitors now stop in the vestibule to present ID to the receptionists, who print a badge from the computerized visitor management system for each visitor.
