Dry weather keeps bacteria levels in Charleston waters low — for now up instead. When it finally does rain, that buildup will get pushed into waterways all at once. This is called “first flush.” “That first flush of stormwater can be horribly, horribly polluted,” Wunderley said. “If you look out West to areas like southern California, where it doesn’t rain a lot, the water is filthy and disgusting after a big rain storm. That’s kind of what the risk for us here is after a drought.”

This has been a different kind of year for Charleston Waterkeeper’s water quality testing program, according to Executive Director Andrew Wunderley. It’s been 13 years since the environmental advocacy group started its Swim Alert program, which monitors levels of harmful bacteria in Lowcountry waterways. This year, levels are at some of the lowest ever seen. “We’re generally seeing less high results overall than we have had in the past,” Wunderley said. “And the high results we are seeing aren’t as high.” Normally, several times per summer, results in some areas would max out the group’s water quality test, which has an upper quantitative limit of 24,196 colonyforming units of enterococcus (or fecal) bacteria per 100 milliliters of water (cfu/ mL). That’s about 200 times over the state standard of 104 cfu/mL. This year, however, the highest result has been 8,000 cfu/ mL in a sample taken Aug. 19 from the Ashley River near Brittlebank Park. “That’s still a high result, and it’s still concerning,” Wunderley emphasized. “But it’s not the astronomically high results we’ve seen in the past.”

When skies are clear and stormwater runoff eventually leaves local rivers and creeks, bacteria levels in most waterways hover between 10 and 100. But heavy rains flush waste and other pollutants into the water, spiking bacteria levels. “This really illustrates the relationship between climate, land and water,” Wunderley said. “The less it rains, the less polluted stormwater there is to be distributed into streams and rivers.” But those low levels are temporary. If rainfall washes pollutants from the land into the water, then a period of drought means those pollutants are just building

Mitigation to cut levels of bacteria has to start well before things get to this point, he added. Imagine a forested watershed with native vegetation and soils. The water and everything it picks up gets absorbed into that permeable landscape. It gives natural processes a chance to clean up any water that does run off. “But in a suburban and urban environment,” Wunderley said, “where you have all this impervious surface cover, you have this really quick pace of floodwaters picking up anything and everything for the last however long it’s been dry. … The way you mitigate it is — well, our state and local stormwater programs need to be a lot better. “We talk a lot about resiliency in terms of the built environment,” he added. “People’s homes and businesses and the economy. But we shouldn’t lose sight of ecological resiliency and the resiliency of the overall estuary. … Every single one of these flooding events is CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

Rundown McMaster’s order is first step toward removing CCSD trustee S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster on Sept. 1 issued an executive order that gave notice to Charleston County School District (CCSD) Board Trustee Darlene Dunmeyer-Roberson that she could be heard by a special panel after a state-run investigation into alleged misconduct. It’s the first step toward her possible removal from office. The order follows McMaster’s Jan. 15 request for the state Inspector General (IG) to investigate DunmeyerRoberson’s conduct. The IG’s office submitted a report to the governor on Aug. 27 that identified “acts of malfeasance, misfeasance, conflicts of interest” between Nov. 7, 2022 and Aug. 27. No criminal charges have been filed. McMaster then gave notice of three allegations against her including disclosure of executive session material, unauthorized disclosure of confidential information and a conflict of interest. The order said Dunmeyer-Roberson must notify the governor by Sept. 10 whether she intends to exercise her right to be heard by a special threemember panel of S.C. attorneys. Beasley wants Americans to break bread together

years — during his tenure with the World Food Program and more recently on his Pee Dee farm outside of Society Hill. As first reported in the Charleston City Paper in January, Beasley and his wife, Mary Wood Beasley, often host world leaders in a comfortable pool house and nearby barn bunkhouse. From that story: “These visitors may be from war-torn nations or places where hunger is rampant — or both. Beasley and his wife, Mary Wood, welcome them to de-stress and talk about ways to reduce the violence and hunger. Removed from a world pounded by electronic invective, Beasley says his guests often relax enough to open their ears and listen to — and better understand — other perspectives. … “But in current political times when people want to cut aid for others, Beasley says the answer isn’t to reverse the succor provided by those institutions. And the answer isn’t to say the job of helping people is finished.” In the story, Beasley outlined how he thought bringing people together and out of their “tribal comfort zones” to commune over meals would generate solutions to scads of problems across the world. “I’ve seen more starvation, more suffering than anybody,” Beasley said in January. “And I’ve seen what happens when people don’t work together. … The answer is going back to these fundamentals of people breaking bread together, sitting down together.” Editor Andy Brack contributed to this story.

Housing authority eyes new projects By Skyler Baldwin The Charleston Housing Authority (CHA) last week called for help from community partners to enact sweeping changes to public housing units in downtown Charleston and beyond. The forum, held Aug. 27 in the Charleston Visitors’ Center, welcomed more than 100 area residents, community leaders and housing advocates. New CEO Nathan Simms Jr., who took the CHA helm in April, outlined the authority’s plans and sought input. “Help us preserve the ability of long-time Charleston families to remain part of this city,” he said. “Help us demonstrate what is possible when real estate development and human development are pursued as one transformation strategy.” “Families have watched communities

that were historically centers of African American life become increasingly difficult for longtime families to afford,” CHA Board Chairman Greg Voigt said. “But we don’t believe that improving neighborhoods should require removing the people who call it their neighborhood.” Simms said the Aug. 27 forum was the first of its kind, and throughout the process of sweeping renovations, there will be more community engagement to hear what residents have to say. “Somewhere in those conversations, maybe an idea, partnership or relationship changes what is possible,” Simms said. “Five or 10 years from now, we should be able to look back on this day and see a fundamentally changed housing authority. “More importantly, we should see fundamentally different opportunities for families in the communities we serve.”

Can sharing a meal help heal an American political culture that increasingly seems to be breaking bad instead? Former S.C. Gov. David Beasley, who led the United Nations’ World Food Program when it won the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize, thinks it can. And he’s planning to give it a try by asking people all over the country to share a meal with their political opponents. It’s an initiative he calls Breaking Bread Together. The idea isn’t to debate, organizers say, but to listen, find common ground and rediscover the real human beings behind the disagreements. “We’ve forgotten how to disagree without losing sight of each other’s humanity,” Beasley said last week in a release. “Breaking Bread Together isn’t about erasing our differences. It’s about proving Beasley that they don’t have to divide us. When people slow down, share a table, and truly listen to one another, communities grow stronger and real progress becomes possible.” Organizers say events will begin rolling out this fall in partnership with local organizations. “Breaking Bread Together is built on the belief that lasting change doesn’t start in Washington,” spokesperson Olivia Weidie said. “It starts around kitchen tables, church halls, and community farms in cities and towns across America.” South Carolina’s former Republican gov-

Creatives to gather Oct. 1 for 50th PechaKucha By Brooke Babbit It’s time again for a few Charleston creative types to master 400 seconds with 20 slides for one inspiring story each. Yes, it’s the latest iteration – the 50th! – of Charleston’s PechaKucha, the periodic “chit chat” that connects creatives across the Lowcountry. It’s all set to roll out at 7 p.m. Oct. 1 at Charleston Music Hall. Award-winning Charleston City Paper cartoonist Steve Stegelin is designing his fifth poster used in imagery and promotions for PK50. “I tossed around a number of concepts before landing on my ‘birds on a wire’ idea,” Stegelin said. “I realized a variety of birds would actually best visualize the spirit of PK, given its diversity of creative voices coming together for shared inspiration, often singing the same song, so to speak, despite their differences.” Since 2008, more than 400 Charleston artists, writers, musicians, chefs and other imaginative professionals have taken the PechaKucha stage to share the stories, experiences and ideas that fuel their work. The event brings Charleston’s broad creative community a chance to share what inspires them. On Oct. 1, the showcase returns to the Charleston Music Hall for the milestone of its 50th edition — and organizers are adding something new to celebrate. PK50 will feature an additional creative tier to this year’s eight signature presentations. To complement the invited presenters, performers will take the stage between presentations. Through music, dance, poetry, comedy and more, these performers generate more excitement to make the 50th edition a little different from the 49 over the last 18 years. Reflecting on past, looking ahead

concept to Charleston in 2008, there was no guarantee the idea would catch on. “We didn’t really know what we were doing,” said Fox, co-founder and associate director of Charleston Arts Festival. “It’s like, when you’re cooking spaghetti and you toss it against the wall to see if it sticks.” It stuck. PechaKucha started in Tokyo, Japan. Translated, the name means, “chit chat,” Its ultimate goal is for creatives to talk less and show more. “It is one thing to talk about art,” said Charles Carmody, director of the Charleston Music Hall, where almost 30 prior PKs have taken place. “It is another thing to actively create and engage with art.” Vikki Matsis, a founder of Ohm Radio, will guide the evening as emcee. “I want people to feel inspired when they leave PK50,” Matsis said. “So often in our society, we are focused on the negative and PK50 is a chance for people to focus on the good that is happening in Charleston.” that we as a community stand up and fight for,” Wunderley said. “That is abundantly clear in my years of doing this work. Without the ability to go out and test and understand what the data says about water quality, we would never know. “This kind of care in the community over time is going to leave James Island and Ellis Creek much healthier for the next generation so that maybe our grandkids can safely swim in the creek.” Wunderley said he’s not taking this time to rest on any laurels, though. “We are actively working on some internal upgrades and efficiencies that will allow us as a team to bring more people and partners into the fold,” he said. “That will, in turn, allow us to come together as a community and add more sites to the Swim Alert program.” It’s a more logistical endeavor than a lot

From the time the team collects a sample from the water, it has eight hours to get it to an incubator for analysis. “We plan out drive times, boat times, the time in the cooler,” he said. “It’s multiple teams, all working through it at a pace to ensure that sample gets to the incubator in time.” And they do it, as of now, for 20 sites weekly for 26 weeks every year. That’s 520 samples collected and analyzed by a team of about 15 to 20 volunteers, and Wunderley said about 98.5% of those samples make it in time. “It’s good logistics, and it’s good support,” he said. “It’s a flexible, nimble team and the all-around willingness of good people to make it happen. Everyone in Charleston Waterkeeper has a hand in that.”

A Mount Pleasant police officer on Aug. 26 reported a “coordinated pack” of three foxes “executing flanking maneuvers” on Camellia Drive, which is near Skoogie’s Hot Dogs. The officer wrote the presumed animal recon team was patrolling the length of the road and “actively trapping” residents walking their dogs. Ten-4, officer. Stand by for backup. Rendezvous at 0600 hours. Smooth criminal A downtown man on Aug. 16 reportedly bought a bottle of beer from a Meeting Street gas station and left with it in a paper bag. Minutes later, he returned and claimed the bag tore and the bottle broke on the ground. He demanded the store give him another bottle. When an employee said no, the man allegedly stole one from the shelf and fled on his moped. The investigation is ongoing. Well, he tried A North Charleston man on Aug. 21 stole a bottle of tequila from a Rivers Avenue liquor store after his card reportedly was declined three times at the checkout counter. The cashier recorded the man’s license plate and appearance, according to a North Charleston police report. But you know, we kind of get it. Beasley, Hastie show what it is to lead L eaders who do good work are not recognized enough. Today, we point you in the direction of former Gov. David Beasley and the Historic Charleston Foundation’s Winslow Hastie. Beasley, who served as head of the United Nations’ World Food Program when it won a Nobel Prize in 2021 for efforts to alleviate global hunger, is now back in South Carolina. But he’s not resting. He has launched a new initiative to bring people together to reduce the draining political toxicity that infects our quality of life. It’s called “Breaking Bread Together” and focuses on showing our differences don’t have to divide us. In essence, Beasley is trying to re-inject civility and decency back into American social interactions. A great way to do that is to share a meal and conversation, said Beasley, who frequently entertains world leaders to help differing people understand each other better. “We’ve forgotten how to disagree without losing sight of each other’s humanity,” Beasley said last week. “When people slow down, share a table and truly listen to one another, communities grow stronger and real progress becomes possible.” Back in January when we profiled Beasley as the idea was percolating, he noted, “I’ve seen more starvation, more suffering than anybody. And I’ve seen what happens when people don’t work together.” The solution, he concluded, wasn’t the Internet, more news or technology because today’s adults and children are connected more now than anytime in world history. But they’re in separate silos, not broadly relating as neighbors. “The answer is going back to these fundamentals of

people breaking bread together, sitting down together,” he said in January. In Charleston, Hastie has been head of the Historic Charleston Foundation for the last nine years after being first hired as its director of preservation in 2006. At the end of this year, he’s going to step down to spend more time in the family business, historic Magnolia Plantation. As its relatively new board chair, he said it needs more of his time and energy. Hastie, who worked as a preservationist and urban planner before returning to his native Charleston, is rightly proud of successes in co-sponsoring the city’s Dutch Dialogues. They crafted a new approach to deal with flooding and the management of rising waters that threaten the historic Holy City. Under his leadership, HCF also started a loan fund to help income-qualified legacy homeowners stay in their historic homes on the peninsula. “Slowing down gentrification and displacement is a very important mission for HCF — you can’t stop it, but we felt we had to try and mitigate its most negative impacts,” Hastie told us this week. He and the organization have been vital in the effort by the city and Beemok to remake Union Pier as a neighborhood, not just a chunk of boxy buildings with little relation to Charleston’s history. He also noted how he and the organization learned something during a public outcry over the Nathaniel Rutledge House a couple of years ago: “If we weren’t willing to listen to the community, then how could we ask people to support us and our mission?” Beasley’s new effort and Hastie’s recent successes illustrate what happens when good leaders lead. We need more of them.

CHECKLIST of community objectives

We encourage community leaders to act on these audacious priorities: 1. Deal with the water. Build a strong resiliency plan to harden infra structure and make smart climate change decisions about develop ment, roads and quality of life. 2. Fix roads, traffic. Repair and improve roads and reduce traffic. Speed up alternatives, including more public transportation. 3. Be smarter about education. Inject new energy into the broken Charleston County school board by focusing on kids, not national mantras. 4. Conduct public business in public. Be transparent in public business. Stop the secrecy. 5. Invest in quality of life. Build more parks. Have more festivals. Invest in infrastructure that promotes a broad sense of community. 6. Engage in real racial conciliation. If we embark on more conversations and actions on racial reconciliation, our community will strengthen and grow. 7. Develop fewer hotels, more affordable housing. Make Charleston a more affordable place to live for everyone. 8. Develop Union Pier at scale. Let’s not put ship-sized buildings on the coveted Union Pier property downtown. Instead, make what comes appropriate. 9. Build and follow a 50-year plan. Plan for the county’s long-term future and follow the plan. 10. Pay people more. Pay a living wage. Push South Carolina lawmakers to set a real minimum wage.

As the conversation turned toward politics, host Nicolle Wallace asked, “when did decency become a luxury?” The dialogue that ensued with actor Jeff Daniels discussed how decency has deteriorated in our current environment. In pulling a definition of decency from the Internet, I ran across this one: “basic decency refers to the minimum standards of polite, moral and honest behavior that are expected in society. It involves treating others with respect, empathy and kindness, and acting in a way that is considered acceptable and appropriate. Essentially, it’s about recognizing the humanity in others and behaving accordingly.” I really like this definition. It gives me a good jumping-off point for my arguments that follow below. When we ignore the barriers for some, it is too easy to ignore the barriers for all. Decency should never be selective. • Exercising civility. Without civility, there are no reasonable discussions. I am reminded of the quote from Marilynne Robinson that “resentment displaces hope and purpose the way carbon monoxide displaces air” when civility is lost. • Engaging in empathy. The late Lee Atwater likely wouldn’t have known what to make of it. Opponents who don’t tear into each other — or even mention the other guy’s name? That’s just not how Atwater, the bad-boy Palmetto State Republican operative who famously exported South Carolina’s gleefully savage brand of bare-knuckles politics to the rest of the nation in the 1980s, played the game. And yet, in interviews last week, state Attorney General Alan Wilson and Rep. Jermaine Johnson, the respective Republican and Democratic candidates for governor, spoke earnestly and at length about their plans for the state — and didn’t talk at all about one another. If it wasn’t full-on Minnesota Nice politics, it was at least Palmetto State Polite. “Look, this is a conservative state and I intend to be a conservative governor,” Wilson said. “But if we’re truly going to lift all boats with the tide here in South Carolina, it’s going to require us to sometimes reach across the aisle to people we don’t always agree with regardless of party.” Johnson struck a similar bipartisan note when asked about his approach. “The reason I have respect from Republicans in the General Assembly is because I communicate,” he said. “I spend time with them. I work with them. And while we may not always see eye-to-eye on everything, we can usually figure out a compromise that gets a victory for the people of South Carolina.” Still, underneath the bipartisan rhetoric, there are two very different men running for governor of South Carolina — and each has a different story to tell.

Johnson: ‘People need to hear they can make it through the fire’ At some point, probably every poor kid in America dreams of being smart and talented and disciplined enough to take the school-and-sports express out of poverty and into the great American middle class. Jermaine Johnson, born to working-class parents in a tough Los Angeles neighborhood on the Fourth of July 1985, was one of the kids who wasn’t just dreaming. Growing up, he saw it all — and lived most of it. Intermittent homelessness. Drugs everywhere you looked. A brother killed by a gun. And all the while, Johnson was playing basketball for prep schools that wanted his smarts and his talent — gifts that in 2004 landed him at the College of Charleston on a full athletic scholarship. “Basketball saved my life,” he said simply. And it taught him, he said, that he had to keep fighting — first for his future, and then for others. “People need to know they can overcome

these obstacles, they can make it through the fire,” said Johnson, now 41. “All these different experiences in my life have just given me a unique perspective on caring for people, on having that empathy for all South Carolinians.” Eventually, those experiences led Johnson to start and lead the nonprofit New Economic Beginnings Foundation, which helps find education and job opportunities for troubled young people and veterans — and to run for a seat in the S.C. House, where he’s served since December 2020. And you can hear the echoes of that life when he talks about his top three priorities as governor: improving the state’s 42nd-in-the-nation education system, fixing its “decrepit” roads and bridges, and expanding Medicaid to give 500,000 South Carolinians access to health care. “When I’m governor, we’re going to start defining the success of South Carolina — not by how its businesses are doing, but by how its people are doing,” said the 6-foot-7 Johnson. “I’ve been hungry, I’ve been homeless, I’ve lived in motels. I’ll fight for everyday South Carolinians because I’ve never forgotten where I came from.”

When people hear that Alan Wilson is longtime 2nd District Congressman Joe Wilson’s son, they may find themselves imagining a life of silver spoons and easy advancement. And glancing at a campaign biography — Eagle Scout, colonel in the National Guard, state attorney general before his fortieth birthday — it’s easy to see why. It would also be wrong. Born in West Columbia in 1973, Wilson lost his biological father, a Vietnam veteran who died in a helicopter accident during flight training at Fort Bragg, N.C., before his third birthday. Soon he and his mother Roxanne were back in S.C., where she was teaching school and raising a toddler on her own — not an easy thing for a woman in that era or any other, Wilson noted with unmistakable pride. Two Blokes Brewing opens Cannon Street taproom By Becky Lacey Craft beer found a new home on the downtown peninsula when Two Blokes Brewing opened a taproom on Aug. 11. Located at 114 Cannon St. in the everexpanding Cannonborough-Elliottborough neighborhood, the taproom offers a place to grab a brew and a bite in a communityfocused space. The brewery and wine bar are on the ground floor of a 19th-century home. The building now features a 50-seat taproom, covered outdoor patio and a small-batch system for specialty and experimental beer releases. The brewery’s flagship opened at 547 Long Point Road in Mount Pleasant in 2016. Current owners Rhett and Haley Anderson purchased Two Blokes in April 2023, just days before their first baby, Eloise, was born. “We always envisioned expanding,” Haley said recently. “Two Blokes is a special place, and having a downtown location accessible to more people became a goal of ours. We have a passion for design and community so getting to create a space from scratch with our look and feel has been incredible.”

Muchachos is described as a brew “as smooth as a salsa dancer’s moves and as refreshing as a dip in the ocean.” The Toes in the Sand is a sour ale with tastes of pineapple, coconut and vanilla, and the Mad Hopper is a pilsner with some bitterness and spice as well as floral and citrus tones. And if you can’t decide what beer you want? The taproom always offers flights that have four different 4-ounce pours. Wine offerings are vast and rotating, and might include a Tempranillo, a Lambrusco (a sparkling Italian aperitivo), orange wines and regenerative organic bottles. The couple once lived in Napa, worked in the wine industry and are avid wine drinkers so wanted to offer a comprehensive wine menu at the Cannon Street space, Haley shared. Food options are well-designed to accompany a cold brew or glass of wine. “Our food menu will be rotating seasonally,” Rhett said. “We have a small but mighty menu where you can find great light bites, flatbreads and sandwiches. We are working with local vendors and suppliers to bring fun dishes to life.” This means dishes like a charcuterie and cheese plate, fries served with garlic aioli, marinated olives and a mezze plate with whipped feta, hummus, roasted peppers, olives, cucumber and pita. A classic Bavarian pretzel comes with a seasonal beer cheese and spicy brown mustard, and you’ll also find tinned fish, wings and salads. For a heartier dish, there’s a bratwurst with sauerkraut, a pulled pork sandwich with apple slaw and — while the fruit is still in season — a peach toast with whipped feta, peaches, pickled red onion, arugula and a balsamic reduction on Grit Bakery sourdough.

Whatever the ideology that Charlestonians champion, there is one observation on which most would agree: The nation’s current political division is all but unbridgeable. If only we could wrench ourselves from laptop echo chambers to gather in the same room and hash it out, fact by fact and face to face, then things might change. In Charleston, two high-profile events may inform your current point of view, while also helping you wrap your head around how the other half thinks.

Decades-old and Grammy-nominated band Little Feat is calling it quits (again) with one final farewell tour

Little Feat offers final farewell Sept. 14-15 in Charleston By Vincent Harris Way back in 1969, two outcasts from Frank Zappa’s band, guitarist/singer Lowell George and bassist Roy Estrada, formed a new band. Depending on whom you believe, Zappa either fired George for writing a song about drugs or because he was too good to be a sideman. Estrada followed his friend, hoping for greener pastures. After recruiting pianist Bill Payne and drummer Richie Hayward, the duo formed a band called Little Feat. The band released its first, self-titled album in 1971. Now after more than 50 years, multiple gold and platinum albums and classic tunes like the slow-rolling “Dixie Chicken,” the truck-driver anthem “Willin’,” the fiery jazz fusion of “A Day at the Dog Races” and the rollicking runaway train “Let It Roll,” Little Feat is calling it a day with “The Last Farewell” tour. The tour stops in Charleston for two nights at the Charleston Music Hall on Sept. 14 and 15. Little Feat might just be the consummate musicians’ band. Everyone from Bonnie Raitt to the Black Crowes and Led Zeppelin loved the group, largely because of its stylistic range and the songwriting skill of George, who was also an incredible slide guitarist and a singular vocalist with a drowsy growl of a voice. George died in 1979 of drug-related health problems and the band broke up. But a 1988 reunion was well-received, as was the gold-selling reunion album, Let It Roll. In 1973, the band expanded into the sixpiece version that is considered the “classic lineup.” That was Payne, Hayward, George, bassist Kenny Gradney, percussionist Sam

Clayton and guitarist Paul Barrere. These days, Payne, Clayton and Kenny Gradney are accompanied by guitarist Fred Tackett, who joined in 1988, guitarist Scott Sharrard, who stepped in when Barrere died in 2019, and drummer Tony Leone, who took over on drums after Hayward died in 2010. Still today at its heart, Little Feat is still the adventurous, exploratory musical unit that had enough skill to fill the critically acclaimed double-live Waiting for Columbus album in its prime. This is not a band that plays the same show every night. So over two nights in Charleston, as Payne told the Charleston City Paper recently, you can expect a lot of stretching out. “Two nights sets up perfectly for us,” Payne said. “It’s the best of both worlds because we can do certain songs on both days but change up the set list otherwise.” Payne is the sole surviving member of the original four-piece Little Feat lineup. He remembers that in the 1970s, the band broke up frequently. “I don’t remember exactly, but it was four to six times, officially and unofficially,” Payne said. The band members were making so much money doing recording sessions for other artists in Los Angeles that staying together in a struggling band seemed foolish. But after reforming as a sextet in 1973 and releasing Dixie Chicken, the band kept drifting back together. “Our management would always come back and ask us to try something. ‘What do you think about making a record?’ ‘OK.’ ‘Let’s do a live album, what do you think?’ ‘Cool, dude.’ ”

When Lowell George died in 1979, Payne and the band didn’t get to say goodbye the way it wanted. Payne said the band is taking its time on this final swing, saying goodbye on the right terms. “It means the world because our fans are the best,” said Payne, 77. “And people are still coming up to us and saying, ‘You sound better than ever!’ But what this tour has done is give us a real focus on what we’re doing. If you know you’re only going to go up to bat five more times, you want to make it count.” The band is definitely making it count, stretching the “Final Farewell” into 2027 and even playing on a multi-day rock cruise. In fact, Payne joked that he’s incredibly busy for someone who’s supposed to be retiring. “My workload is really intense now,” he said with a laugh. “I have a book coming out in February called Carnival Ghosts: A Memoir of Life, Loss and Rebirth with Little Feat. And I’m also doing a solo album in December. So I guess ‘edging towards retirement’ needs a new definition.” No matter how far away it seems, though, the end of the road is in sight for Payne and Little Feat, which, along with writing the book, had Payne thinking about the band’s legacy. “The legacy is the music,” he said. “When we got together in 1969, we discussed what kind of band we wanted to be and what sort of music might it encompass? The legacy is that it was an elastic group.
