Greenville’s Summit took advantage of a 30-year-old law to improve affordable housing

Powerful preservation tool can help boost affordable housing, too

News 08.14.2026

It all started with a phone call from a constituent. “There was a lady who lived on Nassau Street,” said former S.C. Rep. Jimmy Bailey of Charleston, referring to a street in the city’s historically Black Eastside neighborhood. “And the city had a great program at the time — affordable, low-income, second mortgages for home renovations. And she got it.” Thanks to the program, he said, she was able to save her family home — and a little piece of Charleston history in the process. “But then she called me several months later, crying,” continued Bailey, his soft Charleston accent turning hard. “Her tax bill had doubled.” And thus was born what eventually came to be known as the Bailey Bill. Since 1992, it has given local governments the authority to freeze property taxes on historic homes for up to 20 years after major renovations. Bailey, who lives in West Ashley, represented Charleston in the state legislature from 1989 to 1994. In the years since the bill passed, at least 19 local governments across the state have adopted the measure to preserve historic homes and buildings, according to data from the Municipal Association of South Carolina (MASC). And in just one of those cities alone — Columbia — a 2023 independent study found the bill had preserved 210 historic

properties while generating $216 million in private investment. “For every $1 of [city] investment required through the Bailey Bill, an additional $15 was spent in qualifying rehabilitation projects,” the authors reported. Still, in a state where housing prices have exploded in the last decade, Bailey today wonders if the other major provision of the bill — “the affordable housing piece” as he called it — got lost over the years. That’s because the Bailey Bill doesn’t just allow local governments to freeze taxes when historic homes are saved. They can use it for affordable apartment buildings, too, he said. “If you didn’t know what you were looking for, you might miss it,” he said. “You wouldn’t realize that it also applies to low- and moderate-income housing — but it does.” In fact, everyone seemingly did miss it for almost 25 years, until an out-of-state developer who wanted to upgrade an Upstate senior living apartment building without turning it into expensive market-rate housing dug into the law. More on that later.

How it works

Key to the Bailey Bill’s appeal, MASC’s Jenny Boulware told the Charleston City Paper, is its simplicity and flexibility. Under the law, cities and counties are empowered to freeze assessed property values on historic and affordable homes for

up to 20 years, but most of the details are left to local officials. If they want to designate specific Bailey Bill zones where owners can use the tax break, they can. If they want to apply it to properties with local historic values that aren’t on the federal register, that’s up to them. And if they want to shorten the period to, say, 10 years, or lock in long-term affordability requirements, they can do that, too. “The Bailey Bill is an incredibly powerful tool for sites that might be more challenging financially,” Boulware said. “And you can see great examples of that all across the state.” One of those examples is near the Georgia border in Beaufort, where former Mayor Billy Keyserling says the Bailey Bill was recently used to save the city’s last freedman’s cottage. Built by an abolitionist who moved South after the Civil War, the cottage was rundown and bare bones — no bathroom, no electricity, no plumbing — but still in the hands of three elderly sisters whose ancestors bought it from the original builder. Working with the federal government and a local nonprofit, Keyserling and the sisters were able to secure a grant to renovate the cottage. But there was still one problem. “They would have gotten absolutely killed on the taxes,” Keyserling said. And that’s where the flexibility of the Bailey Bill came in, allowing the city to CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

North Charleston Mayor Reggie Burgess this week announced the city’s police chief, Ronald Camacho, resigned after less than two years on the job. No reason for the resignation was given despite questions from reporters. But media reports cited multiple internal complaints against the chief and investigations regarding an alleged hostile work environment. Assistant Police Chief Scott Perry has assumed the role of acting police chief as the city evaluates the department’s longterm leadership Camacho needs, Burgess said. Perry has more than 30 years of service with the department, including extensive leadership and operational expertise, according to a press release, in special operations, fighting street crimes and interagency collaboration. The resignation continues the North Charleston department’s period of uncertainty. It is now seeking its fourth chief of police in three years. —City Paper Staff

“I’ve been accused of not being a politician: Guilty as charged.” —U.S. Sen. Darline Graham, sister of the late politician Lindsey Graham, after the Aug. 11 GOP primary for the spot on the November ballot. Darline Graham, the top vote-getter with 32.7% of the 335,017 votes cast, will face U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman (24.64%) in an Aug. 25 runoff.

By Skyler Baldwin Charleston County School District (CCSD) Trustee Leah Whatley turned to artificial intelligence last week to answer a campaign question from the Charleston City Paper. The move surprised the newspaper’s staff members, some of whom wondered what would happen to local students who completed term papers and assignments with AI-generated answers. One retired educator said such students likely would be accused of cheating. Currently, the Charleston County School District is outlining and implementing rules and expectations that were set in January for the use of artificial intelligence in its code of conduct, including clear expectations of proper disclosure and honesty when using it as a communication tool. The district also allows teachers to set clear expectations for individual assignments — and if students are told not to use AI and were found to, that could be treated as an academic integrity violation. Earlier this month, the City Paper asked incumbent school board members some questions about their reelection efforts. Whatley answered three questions via email, including: “Are you seeking an endorsement from Moms for Liberty or any other political group this election? If not, why not?” Whatley’s response read: “Recommended response, assuming you are not seeking one.” Then this followed: “No. I am not seeking an endorsement from Moms for Liberty or from any other political organization. Moms for Liberty chose to endorse me in 2022. I appreciated every individual voter who supported me, but I did not surrender my judgment to that organization — or to any organization.” When later pressed about the obvious use of AI to generate a response, Whatley snapped back. “AI is an amazing tool when used correctly,” she said. “I am an adult and not a child who is developing. I have been learning to use AI for a while now and even attended the Cognia training in January. You may recall the district recently was certified by Cognia. I am also a small business owner and have been utilizing AI for various things business-related. “I do feel that it is important that AI not replace critical thinking skills, but to be used as a tool. I am not a journalist or an English major, to be completely transparent. I am a criminal justice and business administration major.”

She added that speaking to members of the media could be intimidating, including a time when another local publication highlighted a grammatical error she once made. “I believe it was in a low-level attempt to embarrass me. The division in our society does not fall short on me. With that said, AI can certainly take my ideas and help me to dot my ‘i’s’ and cross my ‘t’s,’ because being publicly humiliated and dehumanized is not fun. I am very sincere in my service to my community.” About 15 minutes later, she sent a second email, saying she did not want to appear defensive or combative. “I used an AI tool to help research publicly available information and organize a draft. The positions, votes and judgements [sic] expressed are mine, but I mistakenly left the words ‘Recommended response’ in the material that I sent you. That was a careless proofreading error, and I understand why it raised questions.” CCSD leaders are still building what they call a “thoughtful, responsible approach” to AI use in schools. The goal is to prepare students and educators for the rapidly changing world while protecting academic integrity and student well-being. The new policy received approval from school board members in January 2026 with implementation planning beginning in the spring. Training and implementation is expected during the 2026-27 school year. The policy reads, in part: “Schools may use AI-powered conversational technologies (chatbots) to enhance students’ learning. AI companions and chatbots must be used only for education and school-related purposes in connection with lessons and assignments and to facilitate learning support and academic assistance.” It continues by saying “users may not engage in any of the following prohibited behaviors when using or accessing CCSD’s internet systems,” including “using generative AI to develop content and presenting it as if it is original to the user without proper disclosure.” According to the new policy, rules apply “to every person who uses a district computer, mobile device, or electronic system or service in any manner including employees, students, contractors, visitors and volunteers.” District systems and services ranging from phones, computers, printers, email and more fall within the scope of the district’s policy. As does email correspondence from school board trustees using district resources. RELATED UPDATE: An Aug. 7 story on school board elections inadvertently left Francis Marion Beylotte’s name off of a list of District 7 candidates. We apologize for the oversight.

Graham to face Norman in Aug. 25 GOP Senate runoff By Andy Brack Tuesday’s special Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat held by the late U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham is headed to a runoff in two weeks — as expected in the 10-way race. Graham’s sister Darline, installed in July in her brother’s seat until the current term runs out in January, was the top primary votegetter, nabbing 32.7% of the 335,017 votes cast statewide. Her opponent in an Aug. Graham 25 runoff from the crowded Tuesday contest will be U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman, a York County Republican who placed third in the June Republican gubernatorial primary. “I’ve been accused of not being a politician: guilty as charged,” Darline Graham said in a statement Tuesday night. “Thank you to every single South Carolina voter who has put their faith in me. Now as we look ahead to the next two weeks, Norman I will work as hard as I can to earn the honor of representing our great state in the Senate and fighting for our conservative agenda.” As early returns flowed in, it was unclear whether Norman or U.S. Rep. Russell Fry of Horry County would face Graham. But as the night wore on, Norman grew a

Affordable housing, too?

Nine years ago, Joe Eddy, president of JE Properties in Boston, was looking to purchase and renovate the Summit, downtown Greenville’s first skyscraper, which was built in 1911 as the Imperial Hotel. What he wasn’t looking to do was throw out the 100-plus low-income senior citizens who were living in the building at the time. “We knew Greenville was interested in preserving affordable housing,” Eddy told the City Paper. “So reading through the

Norman said he was humbled by the support he received Tuesday. “When I entered this race, I asked South Carolinians to judge me — not by what I said, but by what I did; and they overwhelmingly supported our message,” he said in a statement. “Tonight, voters made it clear they want a proven conservative with a record of getting the job done on the ballot for the U.S. Senate, and as we advance to the runoff, that’s exactly what I’ll give them.”

hard to get the signal through to anyone, much less the ‘right’ people,” Huffmon said. Greenville political observer Chip Felkel, who has worked in GOP politics for years, said he expected Darline Graham to place first. “She had the president’s strong endorsement and she had Lindsey’s operation behind her and she was anticipated to finish first,” he said Tuesday night before all of the votes were counted. “The question is who is going to be second. It sets up a very interesting possible dynamic between strongly endorsed Darline Graham versus Ralph Norman who supported (former Gov.) Nikki Haley,” who ran against Trump in 2024. So we were able to use the Bailey Bill to save this critical part of our affordable housing spectrum.” Earlier this year, Eddy invested another $10 million to further upgrade the building, while the city extended his original 2018 tax break for another 20 years. The upshot? More than 100 affordable senior housing units have been preserved through 2046.

Back in Charleston, the man who wrote the bill said he is pleased that so many cities are using it — and that the affordable housing portion was finally being rediscovered. Still, he’s painfully aware of the irony that the only major city in the state that didn’t implement the Bailey Bill was Charleston — the one he wrote it for — mostly due to concerns over lost property taxes in already gentrifying neighborhoods. “Had they done it, those neighborhoods I represented would still look a lot more like they did then,” Bailey said. “And that’s just a damned crying shame.” But, he noted, there’s still time for Charleston to adopt the affordable housing side of the bill, particularly as Mayor William Cogswell looks for ways to pay for his plan to add 3,500 new, price-restricted units to the city’s housing stock by 2032. “That ain’t gonna happen unless the private sector gets involved — and the private sector ain’t going to get involved unless it makes economic sense,” Bailey said. “The good news is the Bailey Bill can help with that.”

Blotter of the Week

North Charleston police on July 31 responded to a Lacross Road business after receiving reports of a potential burglary in progress. According to a report, police arrived to find the front door open and watched two “buzzards” fly out of the top window of the building. Officers conducted a search of the business, but found nothing suspicious — aside from the birds. Where’s Hitchcock when you need him? Good luck An apparently drunken Mount Pleasant man on Aug. 2 reportedly tried to “square up” with passing vehicles on Coleman Boulevard. Police arrived after he tried to fight the cars driving in the roadway and determined he recently ran from a bar (without paying for his drinks, to add to the list) after punching himself in the head a few times. Yeah, we’re going to need to know what he was drinking, we’ll add it to the list for next year’s Best of Charleston party. Tough getaway A North Charleston man on Aug. 2 told city police that a man entered the convenience store to buy a cigar. When he asked the man for his ID, he reportedly pulled a gun and threatened the employee. He then left the store, riding off on an “electric stand-up scooter.” Yippee-kai-yay! We know he had a gun and all, but how do you stop yourself from laughing at that getaway vehicle? By Vincent Harris and Skyler Baldwin harleston’s music scene has never been particularly interested in staying in its lane, and this year’s City Paper Music Awards make that abundantly clear. From country and Americana to electronica, hip-hop, jazz, punk and everything in between, the 2026 winners reflect a scene that thrives on versatility — not just in its sounds, but in the musicians themselves. Charleston celebrated the awards Thursday night at a performance-filled show at the Music Farm. City Paper readers nominated musicians in 17 categories in an online poll over three weeks in June. The next month, they voted on finalists.

Martin: A versatile double-winner

2026 CIT Y PA P ER

Few embody that versatility better than Michael Martin, leader of Michael Martin and the Beautiful Mess, which won two categories — Country/Americana Band of the Year and Song of the Year for “Daddy Hated Nazis.” Martin’s musical life doesn’t even stay within Charleston’s borders: He splits his time between the Lowcountry and Indiana, where he owns and operates a club, and he’s just as comfortable stepping outside his usual lane. For example, he even recorded a duet with this year’s Electronic/Experimental Act of the Year — a cover of “I Love You Now, I Loved You Then,” originally by Jackson Emmer. The duet is proof that in Charleston, genre lines are often less like boundaries than suggestions. “I’ve moved to Charleston three times in my life,” the 47-yearold Martin said in a recent interview with the Charleston City Paper. “Once when I was 19, once when I was 27 and then again when I was 37.” At the end of that first stint, Martin took some Charleston music scene friends back to Muncie, Ind., where he opened a club called Doc’s Music Hall. Martin ran the club from 2006 to 2012 before returning to Charleston again. “We were making plans after they closed the venue in 2012 and sold that building,” he said. “And my buddy who played bass for me said, ‘You love that Charleston so much, so why don’t we go to Charleston?’ I have family here and had a lot of connections at the music venues, so we moved here and started doing what we’re calling ‘Carolina country and beachgrass.’ ” City Paper Music Awards voters classify the music that Martin makes with The Beautiful Mess as “country/Americana,” and he’s generally fine with that. “I would think of what we do as country but also Americana because there’s a lot of rock ’n’ roll. It’s got a little more edge and some punk rock in there. And that to me is kind of what Americana is, that broad stroke of American roots music. That is definitely what we do.” Martin’s Song of the Year winner, “Daddy Hated Nazis,” certainly has a head-turning title. Over a ragged-but-right groove that mixes garage rock attitude with folk honesty, Martin’s rough-hewn voice lays out the story, plain and simple. “Daddy hated Nazis,” he sings, “This I know for sure. Dad said for that kind of sickness / Son, there just ain’t no cure.” Even though the song sticks strictly to Martin’s dad’s point of view, it’s hard not to see a modern parallel. Country/Americana “My dad believed that men have to answer for Band of the Year the things they did. He said, ‘If it wasn’t for the U.S. Mike Martin we’d all be speaking f**king German.’ Then I & The Beautiful Mess Marines, was watching Elon Musk give that speech at President Song of the Year Trump’s second inauguration and he did that Nazi “Daddy Hated Nazis,” salute, and it straight pissed me off. There was no by Mike Martin doubt in my mind, he knew exactly what he was doing. “I thought about my dad, who’s truly an old-school conservative guy,” Martin continued. “I thought, ‘How did American conservatism lose its way this badly?’ But the Allied Forces fought the Nazis the first time, and we’re going to fight them Ashley Stanol now. And we’re going to win.” —Vincent Harris

CELEBRATE CHARLESTON’S MUSICAL DIVERSITY

Jam Band/Alternative Rock Band of the Year

Tales of an OldSoul

Morgan Conklin

All of the material released by Charleston’s Tales of an OldSoul has come out this year. Its singles — the dark and grinding “All Over Again,” the heartfelt, harmony-drenched ballad “Not Okay,” the epic stomper “Break Free” and the upbeat head-nodder “Muddy Water” — seem like the calling cards for a great new band. Turns out one part of that phrase is true. Tales of an OldSoul is in fact a great band, but not a new one. “We played under the name ‘Old Soul’ for about five years,” said the band’s singer, guitarist and songwriter Tristan Lamunion in a recent interview. “But there ended up being a lot of different bands with the same name, which caused a problem with the streaming numbers because when you search, we’re below about 40 other bands. So we started the new band and made it fully original instead of including covers.” In fact, some of those 2026 singles actually predate the new band. “A couple of the songs we’ve put out so far have been around for a long time,” Lamunion said. “We just never recorded them with the full band. We had only previously released acoustic material, but since we started the original band, we changed our whole sound.” Tales of an OldSoul keeps things concise on its recordings, but onstage, the band is proud to explore and stretch the songs out. “When we play our live shows, we’re full-on experimenting,” Lamunion said. “Some of those songs will last 10 to 15 minutes. We’ve never really said that Tales of an OldSoul is a jam band, but it’s almost an every-night thing.” —Vincent Harris

Electronic/Experimental Act of the Year

P!lot

Erel Pilo, the singer, songwriter, guitarist and founder of P!lot, was a bit bemused about the “Electronic” part of this year’s readers’ award. P!lot’s album, Fake Hangover, certainly has its share of electronic moments sprinkled in, but it’s all decidedly outmoded gear, as opposed to the programmed beats and synths of Pilo’s solo work. “It was recorded with mostly analog instruments,” Pilo said in a recent interview. “We even use an omnichord, which — I guess is electronic?” As far as experimental goes, though, that word fits perfectly. The foundation of “Fake Hangover” is guitar-heavy indie pop, but everything else is up for grabs. “Rocket To The Moon” feels like a throwback to the veteran experimental post-rock band Stereolab, with a pleasant vocal melody punctuated by just enough whooshing space sounds to be weird. “Or Lack Thereof” is like two songs welded together, one a moody, stutterstep rocker and the other robotic, mechanical stomp. Then the song comes to a full stop so Pilo can say, “Come talk to me after the show; I’ve got t-shirts for sale.” And that’s all before the epic soundscape that is the title track, which sounds as big as all outdoors, with considerable help from Charleston’s most in-demand producer, Wolfgang Zimmerman, who also played drums on the album. Each song is its own animal on Fake Hangover, and that’s because when writing the songs, Pilo let the stories guide the music. “I came into music with an acting background,” she said. “So I think when it comes to songs, I come in with a story to tell that might influence the structures that I create. So it is very much based on the lyrics. I’ll get a concept that I want to share and then create a song around that.” —Vincent Harris

Ashley Stanol

Screamo/Metal Band of the Year

Ashley Stanol

Local metal band Erode the Dream is regrouping after a significant shakeup this year — good timing for the awards, right? Following the departure of lead singer Mauricio Masáre, guitarist Jon Stout said the band is rerecording some songs, revisiting some older ones and starting fresh on others. But he said he feels pretty good about the future of the band. “We had a bunch of stuff already recorded that we’re going to have to revisit,” Stout said. “But we also had a lot of stuff that wasn’t recorded yet. By the end of the year, you’ll start to see some new singles and stuff coming. This is kind of a chapter two.” And taking home a win in the CPMAs is a great start, he added. “It’s great to get the word out in local music like this — you know, there’s more than just cover bands,” Stout said. “There’s a lot of great people we look up to as well, some who weren’t even nominated. So it’s nice to be recognized. People know about us. That’s great.” After the successful release of Neon Nightmares in early 2025, which it also released on vinyl, Stout said he was happy to keep doing what the band does best all on their own. “We’ve had great success digitally, even done some music videos,” he said. “We just put out a single not too long ago, called ‘Blue,’ with a crazy set and scene with some ghouls running around. The editing took forever, and we could spend the money and get someone else to do it, but we’re all pretty good at what we’re doing, and we like it.” —Skyler Baldwin CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

Jazz Artist of the Year

Charlton Singleton

Alice Keeney

Local jazz musician Charlton Singleton of Ranky Tanky fame is no stranger to awards. The two-time Grammy Award winning trumpeter, though, said it’s always great to be recognized, especially by your own community. “It’s always a genuinely good feeling when people appreciate what you do,” he said. And it’s been a good year for him as he has several projects in the works, including a Big Band record with the Honeycomb Jazz Orchestra, plus small projects celebrating legends like Miles Davis and John Coltrane and some large-scale gigs with other jazz ensembles around the Lowcountry. “I love the variety,” Singleton said, pointing to the several different bands and groups he plays with. “The feeling of playing with a lot of different musicians — it’s one of the unique things about Charleston music. You have a lot of different people who are able to be like a chameleon. You can play in a rock band one night and a cover band the next and a traditional jazz setting the next, and so on.” “That’s a real strength we have here in Charleston. And it’s been that way for a number of years, all the way back to the legend of Jenkins Orphanage.” Coming off the heels of this year’s CPMAs, Singleton said he’s planning to do more contemporary jazz work. He’s playing with a small group at Gullah and Grooves soon and putting out a new album with it a bit later — something he hasn’t done in a few years. Beyond that, he said, he has some surprises in store. —Skyler Baldwin

Peninsula Grill enters new chapter

Going dark

The Faculty Lounge, a speakeasy inspired bar at 391 Huger St., has closed after 12 years in business. Co-owners Nayda and Erik Hutson also own Italian-themed Renzo, located just down the block.

What’s new

By Becky Lacey Charleston native John Ondo has been a pillar in the Lowcountry cuisine scene for more than three decades. Many remember his Mediterraneaninspired restaurant Lana on Rutledge Avenue. After Lana closed in 2017, Ondo ventured to Kiawah Island to be executive chef at the golf resort’s Ocean Course, a seven-year tenure running both the Atlantic Room and the Ryder Cup Bar. Almost three decades ago, Ondo worked as a line cook in the Peninsula Grill kitchen after graduating from Trident Tech’s Culinary Institute of Charleston. His recent return downtown to take over as executive chef at Peninsula Grill is a true homecoming.

A chef’s journey

14

Located at historic Planters Inn, Peninsula Grill opened in 1997, well before Charleston became the culinary hotbed it is today. Founding Executive Chef Bob Carter ran the kitchen until 2011 when Graham Dailey took over and captained the kitchen for six years. Under these two luminaries, Peninsula Grill established itself as a fourdiamond and four-star restaurant known for its white tablecloth service and 12-layer Ultimate Coconut Cake, a trademarked, beloved dessert that has been on the menu for more than 20 years. These days, Peninsula Grill’s menu will change with the seasons and reflect Ondo’s longstanding relationships with Lowcountry growers and purveyors. His food is shaped by Ondo international influences, reflecting past experience cooking in Ireland, Spain and Italy. He said his plan is to honor the traditions at Peninsula Grill by putting his own spin on it. That will mean food that is light, balanced and herb-forward. Ondo cooks with a refined balance of acidity and richness, which translates into food that is light and nourishing.

Courtesy Peninsula Grill

Heirloom tomatoes come with crispy Vidalia onions and a pickled ramp ranch “We all have different styles of cooking,” he said. “If you told me to cook a dish, I’m going to give it to you my way. You go down the street to SNOB (Slightly North of Broad) and tell Russ (Moore) to cook you the same dish, he’s going to give it to you his way. We’re going to keep some of the things that have been staples on the menu for a while like the lobster three-ways. I’m just going to put my touches on it.” He said he believed in clean, simple food. “It is the best food, just elevate it and make sure it’s nice. We have to respect the house that we’re in and respect our guests and clients and what they want and what they’re here for.”

On the menu

Ondo developed the current summer menu with Chef de Cuisine Dominic DeFilipo. Seafood towers, oysters and the aforementioned lobster three-ways will remain mainstays. A Jimmy Red corn soufflé comes with a pinkeye pea vinaigrette, white cheddar and a peach drizzle. Heirloom local tomatoes come with crispy Vidalia onions, chive oil and an additive pickled ramp ranch. Grilled lamb loin is served alongside Ondo’s Southern spin on tabbouleh, using Carolina Gold middlins in place of bulgar wheat. The poulet rouge features seared breast, confit thigh and smoked pulled drumstick, served with sorghum, seasonal succotash and jus. And while the coconut cake rightfully gets the glory, don’t miss the peach crème brûlée.

Another Ondo signature is how he works the dining room, often standing at the pass hand-delivering plates to tables. It is something he picked up at Lana, where his business partner would expedite food deliveries and talk with guests on Fridays and Saturdays. “I found that our food improved because I was actually seeing what was coming through the pass instead of holding down a station and being in the weeds myself,” Ondo said. “It’s nice to touch tables, talk to your guests and thank them for coming in. It’s fun to interact with our guests to get their feedback to pass along to my staff.” The summer menu will run through the end of August, when the restaurant will close for a brief makeover. It’s slated to reopen in late 2026, which coincides with a larger hotel renovation that will last until early next year. While it is no easy feat to take over a storied kitchen, the next chapter of the Peninsula Grill is in great hands with Ondo at the helm. Ondo said the stars aligned to allow him to return to Peninsula Grill. “It’s not every day that you get the opportunity to put your name in the hat for an iconic property like this,” he said. “Had it been any other restaurant, I probably would still be dipping out of a food and beverage meeting to go play golf out on Kiawah. “I’m super excited to shepherd this into the next generation and carry on what Bob and Graham so skillfully did all the years ago. I’m just really honored to have been tapped to do this.”

Footlight to fire off with Grease for 95th season

Audience members will recognize several songs, such as “Summer Nights,” “Greased Lightnin’ ”, “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and “You’re the One That I Want,” in the anticipated four-week production. Also on the calendar in coming months are four other productions:

Charleston’s regional premiere of this lightning-fast theatrical spoof that reimagines Bram Stoker’s classic as a comedy. • A Christmas Story (Feb. 12 to March 7). Holiday audiences will enjoy this stage adaptation of the film. • Who’s Holiday (Dec. 18-22) This more adult-oriented favorite will bring back Cindy Lou Who’s foul-mouthed holiday hijinks. • Mean Girls (Feb. 12 to March 7). This hit Broadway musical is based on the iconic film. It offers sharp comedy and infectious music that the Footlight team says will be one of the season’s biggest crowd-pleasers. • Les Liaisons Dangereuses (March 26 to April 11). The season’s lone dramatic offering, the play is an award-winning adaptation that explores manipulation, desire and power with gripping sophistication. • Shear Madness (April 30 to May 16). This internationally celebrated interactive comedy will have the audience rolling in the aisles as it becomes part of the performance’s investigation. No two shows are alike.

• Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors (Oct. 9-31). The company will offer

Staff reports The historic Queen Street Playhouse will heat up Aug. 21 when the acclaimed Broadway show and movie Grease light up the Footlight Players’ 95th season that will be filled with laughter. “Our mission has always been about more than producing great theatre,” Executive Director Brian Porter said. “It’s about creating experiences that bring people together. We want audiences to walk into Queen Street Playhouse, leave the outside world behind for a few hours, and remember what it feels like to laugh together.” The company’s production of Grease, led by Artistic Director Kyle Barnette, will embrace traditional elements of the classic musical and add “new theatrical flair, immersive audience experiences, and the infectious energy that has become a hallmark of recent Footlight productions,” according to a press release. “Grease reminds us why we fell in love with musical theater in the first place,” Barnette said. “It’s funny, heartfelt, nostalgic, and filled with music that generations know by heart. It’s exactly the kind of show that lets audiences forget their worries for an evening.”

Kuhn’s new book focuses on family, growing up

16

ON STANDS NOW!

Energetic former Republican state Sen. John Kuhn of Charleston has got a new book, I Tell It Like It Is!, which highlights his California upbringing and commitment to family. The self-published book, the first of three autobiographical works, also will be the focus of a 50-state tour that Kuhn plans for the fall. He is co-owner of Kuhn and Kuhn law firm in West Ashley, but no longer practices law. The new book is filled with often entertaining stories, such as the time when he got excited about making one of his favorite sandwiches — of beef tongue — for his new bride, Shea, an estate planning lawyer. Beef tongue, he Kuhn wrote, was a delicacy in agriculture communities of the southern California desert. “Within two weeks of our coming home to Charleston from our honeymoon, and Shea was already back at her [then] paralegal job in the city, I decided to make my 22-year-old bride a wonderful beef tongue sandwich from scratch for lunch when she came home.” A problem, though, was he didn’t know how. And he couldn’t find fresh beef tongue. So he called his father-in-law, who suggested checking out the then-open Meeting Street Piggly Wiggly. It was, as he relates, a different kind of shopping experience. Then Kuhn, not a cook, had to figure out how to prepare the sandwich. This time, he turned to his parents’ housekeeper,

who helped to raise him. She informed him that the tongue needed to boil with two bay leaves for two hours before being sliced for a sandwich. Shea Kuhn’s reaction was priceless. She was tickled her new husband was preparing lunch until she pulled the lid off the pot. “What on God’s earth is that ugly thing?” she asked. “John! Look at it! It is disgusting! I would no more eat that than fly to the moon.” Kuhn deadpanned, “Well, honey, looks like we will be going out for lunch.” Shea: “John, that is the best idea you have had all day.” Interspersed between anecdotes that range from funny to sometimes repetitive are occasional libertarian political reflections that marked Kuhn’s three-year tenure at the Statehouse that started after his December 2001 election. It’s not long before you learn that Imperial Valley farmers hate rain. Or that Kuhn believes you must use the talents that God gave you. Or how swimming and hard work helped him beat asthma at an early age. He also waxes on about the fallacies of pasteurized milk and the later President Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society. He details hyperactivity and ADHD, novelist Ayn Rand, how churches should start using the King James version of the Bible, the ills of processed food and his budding fascination with rock ’n’ roll, including The Who and Fleetwood Mac. —Andy Brack IF YOU WANT THE BOOK: Head to johnrkuhn.com.
