Petition, Cogswell back $1 million for safer streets in Charleston

About a week after a group of citizens launched a petition for safer streets, Charleston Mayor William Cogswell said he supports adding $1 million to the city’s budget to fund pedestrian safety projects throughout the city.

“Pedestrian safety is a top priority for Mayor Cogswell, and the city is actively working on a number of fronts,” city spokesperson Deja Knight McMillan wrote in an email Tuesday to the Charleston City Paper.

Cogswell’s support, McMillan wrote, is not related to the petition, which as of Tuesday had 1,705 signatures on the petition, which calls for a $1 million line item in the city’s budget for safer streets.

She said the mayor supported the $1 million budget line item, and he intended “to move forward with it in the budget (request to City Council). Those funds would also allow us to leverage additional dollars from the county and state.”

Charleston writer Gervais Hagerty, one of the citizen group’s organizers. said it was preparing to request a meeting with Cogswell sometime before the middle of May when she learned of his support of the proposal.

“Holy, wow!” said Hagerty, who describes herself as a scared mom who is worried about the safety of children walking through Charleston, in response to the mayor’s support. “We have not yet reached out to the mayor’s office. That’s amazing. That is incredible.”

The petition is intended to show city leaders that many peninsular Charleston residents want programs to improve street safety, but safety upgrades are needed throughout the city, she said.

Petition follows tragedy

The March 26 traffic death of 78-year-old Charleston resident Annelise Simmons led to the petition, Hagerty said. Simmons was fatally injured when she was struck by a pickup truck while in a designated crosswalk at Broad and King streets.

“Something about Annelise’s death really got the community talking,” Hagerty said.

About 25 concerned mothers who say they are terrified about the safety of their children as they walk through Charleston met informally on April 15. From that meeting, the petition grew and circulated throughout the city. On the petition, hundreds of people have commented about their “close calls” with cars and trucks, Hagerty said.

“We wish to honor the memory of all pedestrians who have lost their lives in traffic-related incidents in our city,” according to the petition. “This effort is pursued with respect for all families who have

Davis vows to fight strict abortion ban

The S.C. Senate Medical Affairs Committee on April 21 advanced a strict abortion ban bill on an 8-4 vote along party lines, with one exception: Republican Sen. Tom Davis, who voted “no.”

“This bill isn’t going to get debated on the calendar,” Davis vowed, according to the S.C. Daily Gazette. “I’m not sure what we’re doing.”

The proposed bill would ban abortions as soon as a pregnancy can be clinically diagnosed, strike exceptions for rape, incest and fatal fetal anomalies, add criminal penalties and reclassify abortion-inducing drugs as Schedule IV controlled substances.

“This law is so out of step with where South Carolinians are,” Davis said. “It does not create a culture of life. It creates a culture of surveillance, of family conflict, of legal terror. It sends a horrible message.”

lost loved ones and with a shared commitment to making our streets safe for everyone. Sixty-year-old Edward W. Brown, a pedestrian in a wheelchair, died March 6 after being struck on Sam Rittenberg Boulevard.

The citizen petition cites a Smart Growth America study that ranks the CharlestonNorth Charleston area as the ninth most dangerous metro area for pedestrians in the nation. The study reports an annual average rate of 3.66 pedestrian deaths per 100,000 residents between 2018 to 2022.

Hagerty said a line item in the city’s budget for safety projects can give Charleston the flexibility to leverage funding from state and federal sources for improvements that could include speed bumps, curb extensions and leading pedestrian interval signals and complete already recommended projects in the City of Charleston Safety Action Plan.

Traffic data and proposals have been collected “so we don’t have to reinvent the wheel,” said Hagerty, a long-time safestreets advocate. “The city has been so close to taking these projects to the finish line, but there has been a serious lack of funding to move things forward.”

The city’s plan

The city’s response to the petition also comes as city staff and council members were traveling Tuesday to Columbia to meet

The metro area also rated as one of the cleanest in the nation for short-term particle pollution for the second year in a row.

S.C. senators push AI chatbot rules despite Trump opposition

An increasingly testy standoff between the Trump White House and state lawmakers of both parties came to South Carolina last week as a state Senate panel began moving two bills that aim to impose strict new regulations on artificial intelligence chatbots.

The bills, which supporters tell Statehouse Report are being combined into one package for a last-minute legislative push before the session ends May 14, would create what sponsors call legal guardrails for both adult consumers and children around popular chatbots such as ChatGPT and Claude.

The guardrails would include age verification and parental consent, restrictions on the storage and use of users’ personal data, and mandated notifications that chatbots are not licensed professionals like doctors, lawyers and therapists. Under the legislation, the state attorney general, county attorneys and private citizens could all sue for damages of up to $5,000 per violation.

“We’re coming to a point with this emerging technology that we’ve got to start flexing our AI legislative muscles,” Charleston Republican Sen. Matt Leber, a bill sponsor, told the panel on April 15. “This has very light guardrails, but it does put responsibility on the companies to make sure that their AI is not going to be used in a nefarious way.”

That approach puts Leber’s legislation in direct conflict with President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly pushed for federal legislation banning such bills, and reportedly twisted GOP leaders’ arms to kill similar bills in Florida and Utah.

“A patchwork of conflicting state laws would undermine American innovation and our ability to lead in the global AI race,” the White House said in a March 20 policy statement that called on Congress to pass a fed-

with Justin P. Powell, state transportation secretary, for the second time in a week.

McMillan said city officials are meeting with Powell “to advocate for additional pedestrian and bicycle safety investments in Charleston. The timing (of the meeting and petition) is not coincidental. We are pushing hard at the state level because much of the road network on the peninsula falls under” the state’s jurisdiction.

eral law protecting children and consumers.

University of South Carolina economist Joseph Von Nessen told Statehouse Report the White House’s concerns reflected textbook business worries about regulatory complexity.

To illustrate the issue, he said to imagine a call-center business that places calls into multiple states. In one state, chatbots are allowed. In another, they’re forbidden. And in another, they can only be used in very specific ways. Now, multiply that by 50 states.

“Navigating those sets of rules could lead to real inefficiencies,” Von Nessen said.

Regarding concerns about innovation being stifled as 50 states bring various regulatory frameworks forward, he said the worry is rooted in uncertainty.

“Uncertainty breeds paralysis,” he said, noting that that can be true whether the regulations under consideration are ultimately beneficial or not. “When businesses don’t know what to expect, they can’t make strategic plans on how to grow, adapt to the market and move forward.”

In an April 16 interview, Leber said he’s not unsympathetic to those concerns. But with Congress increasingly unable or unwilling to pass legislation on issues of public concern, he said, the states are being forced to step in.

“We can’t let the protection of South Carolinians be held in limbo because those guys can’t get their act together,” Leber said, noting that state action can help break the federal logjam.

“Oftentimes, when the states act, they begin to take the issue more seriously and start to move a little more quickly,” he said.

As for the need, Leber pointed to “horror stories” senators heard in April 15 testimony from educators and parents groups, including documented instances of user suicide and highly sexualized chats with minors.

One of those parents was Fort Mill resi-

every pedestrian signal by June.

“This will add pedestrian intervals that allow pedestrians to cross before traffic lights turn green,” she wrote. “We installed AI cameras at every traffic signal on Calhoun Street that helps us collect data and make informed decisions.”

dent Kimberly Long of Mothers Against Media Addiction, who argued that children needed explicit legal protections from the mental health risks she said AIs pose.

“The dangers embedded in the rise of AI and chatbots are not the arena in which to give kids free rein,” Long said.

Charleston-area clinical psychologist Viktoriya Magid told Statehouse Report she’s familiar with those concerns, though in her practice, the chatbot-related issues she sees tend to involve patients who don’t realize they’re “talking to themselves” when they chat with a bot. And that, she said, can lead to erroneous, garbage-in, garbage-out self-diagnoses.

“What people don’t understand is that it’s going to give you advice based on what you feed it,” Magid said. “So I have folks coming in thinking they’re having these insights when it’s really just their own blind spots repackaged with a diagnosis that’s usually wrong.”

That’s precisely the kind of problem supporters say the bill tries to address with regular notifications that chatbots aren’t professionals.

Opposition to the legislation

Nevertheless, several business groups, including bankers, video game manufacturers and customer service industry representatives, testified against the legislation as written.

Specifically, they argued that its definition of chatbot — “an algorithmic or automated system that generates information through text, audio, image, or video in a manner that simulates interpersonal interactions or conversations including artificial intelligence” — is too broad, and would create expensive liability risks for everyday businesses the bill isn’t aimed at.

Blotter of the Week

An elderly man on April 10 reportedly stole a small box containing frozen TV dinners from a Dorchester Road grocery store, according to a police report. North Charleston police investigated in the area but were unable to find the suspect. According to the report, security footage showed the man hiding the dinners behind his back as he walked past the checkout counter and out of the store. Slick!

Smell test Charleston police on April 6 caught a man smoking a hand-rolled cigarette in a Mary Street parking garage. Based on what they smelled, police checked to see if he was smoking weed — and he was, of course. While searching the man, they found about 8 grams of marijuana hidden in his right sock. Unfortunate timing — only a couple weeks before 4/20!

State and federal transportation partnerships, she explained, “are essential to moving these projects forward, and why the city has been deliberate about building those relationships.”

McMillan said the city’s safety improvements include a re-timing of every light and

By September, the city plans to complete pedestrian crossing safety features on Calhoun Street at Coming, St. Philip and King streets, at King and Market streets, and on Meeting Street at Market and Broad streets.

McMillan also reported that traffic signal upgrades are proposed across West Ashley, Johns Island, the North, South and East peninsula, pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements on the Eastside, pavement marking improvements on Fleming Road, and vegetation,

The petition describes people who signed it as “residents of Charleston who are deeply concerned about the lack of safety for people walking in our city.”

Hagerty said the citizen group is not affiliated with the safety advocacy group, Charleston Moves, but it has “leaned heavily” on Katie Zimmerman, the group’s executive director, for advice.

Hagerty said she hopes the petition can serve as a “surgical strike to cut through the bureaucracy to get things going. It is our strategy to show council members this is wanted throughout the community. A city’s budget reflects its values.”

Mount Pleasant police on April 12 received a phone call from a man who claimed his phone was stolen by a woman hired by his ex-wife. His evidence? The woman was wearing clothes that were “too casual for her face,” and another woman with her was dressed “covertly.” About an hour later, someone else called in to say they found the missing phone on a sidewalk. Talk about anti-climactic.

The Blotter is taken from reports filed with area police departments between April 6 and April 12.

Piccolo Spoleto 2026 to offer 250 events

May and June will bring a reinvigorated Piccolo Spoleto Festival to Charleston that will feature 250 events, all but 60 of which will be produced by arts and community groups whose independent work has nurtured culture and talent for years. Half of Piccolo Spoleto’s events will be free.

Rochelle Riley, the city of Charleston’s new director of the Office of Cultural Affairs, said the 2026 festival — the city’s 48th — will bring back fun that people remember and provide “new experiences they’ll never forget.”

The 17-day festival, which opens May 22 as a city-backed companion event to Spoleto Festival USA, has the theme of “from here.” Organizers expect this year’s festival to encourage residents to “lean into local” by experiencing and celebrating Charleston and the arts in fresh ways — including inviting friends and family from out of town to join.

Festival-goers will have something new to explore this year — a series of “Piccolo Porch Concerts,” which will be smaller concerts with big sounds in various small venues around the city. These performances are modeled after popular Front Porch concerts and NPR’s “Tiny Desk” concerts. More details are forthcoming.

Residents and visitors also will enjoy traditional shows and performances that have become as familiar as a comfortable robe. Highlights include:

• Sunset Serenade with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra , May 22, U.S. Custom House. This traditional opening day concert welcomes guests from around the country.

• The Memorial Day Concert, slated for 3 p.m. May 25 at Hampton Park, will feature the Charleston Concert Band.

• Arts events. The Office of Cultural Affairs will host 17 events at the Cannon Street Arts Center in its 110-seat theater and large gallery. Also not to be missed is the annual Piccolo Juried Art Exhibit at the City Gallery every Wednesday through Sunday from May 22 until the end of the festival.

music highlights are the returns of the popular L’Organo Music Series at churches around the city and the Early Music Series at St. Mary’s Catholic Church downtown.

Leber and other senators at Wednesday’s hearing said they were open to amendments to address businesses’ concerns, but warned advocates to get their proposed changes in quickly, because time is running short and the legislative train is on the tracks.

“Folks, I would just encourage you to work with the sponsor or staff to get those amendments in,” committee Chairman Sean Bennett, R-Dorchester, told business representatives pointedly as the hearing closed. “At the next meeting, we are going to be moving forward.”

A legislative session of missed opportunities Views

The 2026 legislative session might be best characterized as the Session of Missed Opportunities. Again. Seems that whenever we look at what’s actually happened amidst all of the spring wrangling at the Statehouse, we’re actually not that impressed with what state lawmakers have been doing — especially when looking through the lens of making real changes that impact real people.

Where, for example, are the legislative solutions for regular people who struggle with housing and food affordability? Both are real as gas prices stay high in the midst of a weird war in the Middle East that continues to seek validity and justification.

Where are the debates, red faces, arguments, compromises and politicking about things like expanding health care access, reducing poverty, paying a living wage and reducing suffering? Instead, we got a lot of mumbo jumbo about reducing income tax rates (which will help the rich folks), making it harder for people to vote by closing political primaries and the Grade A, No. 1 Republican Red Meat Issue that keeps coming back like bad zombies — inventing new bills to scare the hell out of people over abortion. And this in a state that already has one of the strictest abortion bills in the country!

As the state Senate continues to debate a $15 billion budget, legislators should be congratulated for embracing better pay for teachers and state employees as well as directing lots more money to South Carolina’s neglected roads. But think about these four relatively easy things they could have done to get more credibility with voters:

Hate crimes. Almost 11 years after a racist gunman massacred nine people at Emanuel A.M.E. Church in

Charleston, lawmakers still have not had the decency to pass a hate crimes bill. Shame.

Judicial reform. Legislators essentially punted this year on improving ways to pick state judges, particularly during the nominations process.

Sales tax reform. Not only is South Carolina’s tax code filled with gimmicks like an annual sales tax holiday, but the state provides billions of dollars in sales tax exemptions to special interests — and has done so for years. Lawmakers need to take a serious look at whether old exemptions still have a valid reason in the digital economy and if not, they should dump them. The state could generate a couple of billion dollars of sales tax revenue in this manner — which could allow legislators to lower our high sales tax rate by a couple of pennies. Smart fiscal reform would be a boon — if lawmakers had the courage to take it on.

Expand Medicaid eligibility. To keep 300,000 South Carolinians from being trapped in funding gaps, the state should expand Medicaid eligibility. And the beauty of doing this? The federal government would pay 90% of the cost. This is a no-brainer.

State lawmakers should be proud of some of the stuff they’ve done during this session. But they really need to take a hard look in 2027 at ways they can help more regular people — so that we’re not writing another editorial next year about the same missed opportunities.

CHARLESTON CHECKLIST of

community objectives

We encourage community leaders to act on these audacious priorities:

1. Deal with the water. Build a strong resiliency plan to harden infrastructure and make smart climate change decisions about development, roads and quality of life.

2. Fix roads, traffic. Repair and improve roads and reduce traffic. Speed up alternatives, including more public transportation.

3. Be smarter about education. Inject new energy into the broken Charleston County school board by focusing on kids, not national mantras.

4. Conduct public business in public. Be transparent in public business. Stop the secrecy.

5. Invest in quality of life. Build more parks. Have more festivals. Invest in infrastructure that promotes a broad sense of community.

6. Engage in real racial conciliation. If we embark on more conversations and actions on racial reconciliation, our community will strengthen and grow.

7. Develop fewer hotels, more affordable housing. Make Charleston a more affordable place to live for everyone.

8. Develop Union Pier at scale. Let’s not put ship-sized buildings on the coveted Union Pier property downtown. Instead, make what comes appropriate.

9. Build and follow a 50-year plan. Plan for the county’s long-term future and follow the plan.

10. Pay people more. Pay a living wage. Push South Carolina lawmakers to set a real minimum wage.

IS

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

A FRIEND OR FOE TO LOCAL TATTOO ARTISTS?

Artificial intelligence is shaping industries across the board — stealing jobs, creating online shortcuts — and generating photos of your dog as a human. Some believe trade industries are generally safe from meddling by AI, but what happens in spaces where trade and artistry come together?

Squarely in the middle of that tension is tattooing, a practice that’s been around for more than 5,000 years.

The longstanding artistry has turned into a booming industry across the United States. A 2023 survey by Pew Research Center showed that 32% of Americans have tattoos.

“It’s such a funny thing — technology and tattooing,” Betsy Butler, co-founder of Nidum Studios in North Charleston, told Charleston City Paper. “Even when the iPads showed up, oh my gosh, it was wild.”

She recalled the pushback received in the industry from digital drawing from tablets, but noted that it made her job much easier. What used to take hours in design and drawing could be cut down to minutes.

A new tool

For Butler, AI can serve a purpose, but only when used carefully. She recalled using AI software to find a better reference photo for a client. The client wanted her old van inked onto her at a threequarter view, but only had a side view reference photo. Butler used AI to create a more usable reference photo. From there, she drew the design in her own style.

That distinction, she emphasized, is critical. AI can assist, but shouldn’t replace an artist’s work.

Where’s the line?

Ashley McMullen, owner of Fade to Black Tattoo in Summerville, sees a similar shift happening in her shop. Clients increasingly arrive with AI-generated images in hand, hoping to streamline the process.

“It’s good if clients don’t know what they want, but want to see how it would be put together,” McMullen said, but she’s quick to draw a line. “I will not copy it. You can tell when something’s AI. It all kind of looks the same.”

Clients can certainly save themselves and their artists a lot of time by testing out their own concepts before entering a parlor. But McMullen and Butler agree that AI art should never be taken as final. It’s up to the artist to draw the tattoo on their own.

“When it comes to an artist, it’s absolutely your job to create something special for these people,” Butler said. “Authenticity is any art.”

Trade and artistry, blended

This concern goes beyond artistry for McMullen. It’s about preserving the culture behind tattooing itself. A craft historically passed down through mentorship and experience, tattooing relies on human connection just as much as technical skill.

“Tattooing is a trade,” she said. “You learn how to draw, but you also learn how to deal with people.”

McMullen

Steps for getting an original, memorable tattoo

In a world of Pinterest copy-and-paste tattoos, here’s how to get the art nobody else has.

1

DEVELOP YOUR THEME.

Understand what kind of tattoo you want. Funny? Sentimental? Memorial? Focus on the feelings you want to have when you imagine yourself looking at the tattoo — whether it’s inspired or thankful.

2

FIND YOUR INSPIRATION.

That relationship, she argues, is what makes tattooing so special. It separates the art from other industries through an intimate process of consultation, collaboration and trust.

“AI can’t make you social.” McMullen said.

Beyond a catalog

That idea resonates with Dr. Ryan Milner, department chair of communications at the College of Charleston and longtime tattoo aficionado.

“I don’t want to just order from a catalog,” Milner said. “I like working with someone to execute that kind of shared vision.”

For Milner, each of his tattoos represent a milestone in his life. They hold memories that require a human touch. From his first tattoo in Kansas City to his most recent additions here in Charleston, every design reflects a moment, relationship and piece of his life.

The process, he believes, is inherently collaborative. It’s an exchange between artist and client that shapes the final result. Using AI-generated tattoos would flatten the creative process clients like Milner appreciate.

“If I found out a tattoo was AI-generated, I’d get it covered up,” he said. “It would cheapen what tattoos are about.”

One of Milner’s sleeves was done by an artist he grew close with over multiple sessions. Joe, a tattoo artist from Kansas City, tattooed several other members of Milner’s family and even introduced him to bluegrass music.

Years later, he learned the artist had passed away. Now, those tattoos hold an even deeper meaning.

“It’s kind of like a memorial.” Milner said. “Everybody he ever tattooed is carrying a bit of him on their skin.”

Collect images of what you’d want. Understand that most artists will not copy and paste an image from Pinterest or Instagram. These images should be jumping off points, not plans.

3 PICK A STYLE.

Tattooing has evolved past traditional style. Every artist has a style he or she leans towards. Whether you like realism or watercolor, find the tattoo work that fits your creative expression best.

4 FIND YOUR ARTIST.

Not all tattoo artists are created equal — and that’s a good thing. Find an artist whose portfolio reflects work similar to your ideal tattoo. If you like fine line work, for example, don’t pick the artist who specializes in bold traditional. Spend some time browsing through Instagram or online portfolios. Reviews are your friend — especially the bad ones. A great tattoo starts with an artist who understands your vision and has the technical skill to execute it.

5

COLLABORATION IS KEY.

To make a tattoo feel like your own, you should have a voice in the art. Be open with your artist about what you want, and work with the tattooist during the design. Find the sweet spot between trust and control. The artist may know more about tattooing, but at the end of the day, this will be on your body forever. A strong artist will take your references and direction and turn them into something original.

6 ROCK IT.

Admire your finished product, and brace yourself for the needle that will make it permanent. When finished, you should feel confident in the new addition to your skin’s ecosystem. —Alyssa McDowell

Mother’s Ruin opens in former Rarebit space

Mother’s Ruin, known for its inventive cocktails and bar eats in locations like New York, Nashville, Chicago and Austin, will get a fifth home in the Lowcountry, opening April 24 at 474 King St.

Co-owner T.J. Lynch, who also co-owns Lost Isle and Low Life in Charleston, is excited about the new addition to the Lowcountry cuisine scene.

“I’ve always loved Charleston’s food and beverage culture,” he said. “After living here for eight years, it really felt like the time was right to add something to this city’s already vibrant hospitality scene.”

While each Mother’s Ruin has its own local flavor, what is consistent across all spots is teamwork.

“One major constant at all the locations is our focus on our staff,” said Lynch. “We’re all bartenders or at least we all have been at some point. So naturally the quality of our staff is central to how we roll.”

The food and drink

All-day eats are available until 1:30 a.m. and include a greatest hits of bar snacks with a spin. According to Lynch, the eatery’s fried chicken sandwich and the Cholula honey wings are two of the most popular items that have been on the menu almost since opening day in New York in 2011.

Old Bay waffle fries come with spicy ketchup and caramelized onion dip. Mozzy stix are served with toasted garlic marinara and kimchi ranch, and Thai Brussels sprouts come with cashews, chickpeas, cilantro and lime. There is a breakfast burrito with scrambled eggs, scallion crema, red onion, cheddar, waffle fries and cilantro and a choice of chorizo or mushrooms. A barbecue shrimp po’ boy has Gochujang barbecue fried shrimp, cucumber-lime-cilantro yogurt, pickled Fresnos, lettuce and tomato. And of course there’s a burger. Mother’s Ruin’s version is a smashburger with white American cheese, lettuce, onion, pickles and secret sauce on a brioche bun, served with Old Bay waffle fries and spicy ketchup.

The opening cocktail menu has the “rooftop motel” made with bourbon, lemon, peach and tea, and the “hot girl hubris” mixes tequila, guava, coconut and lime. There also is a frozen slushy with vodka, cherry and limeade. For those that miss the Rarebit’s most beloved cocktail, Mother’s Ruin will be serving the “Rarebit mule” with a choice of vodka or tequila.

Brunch is available until 4 p.m. daily and dishes include challah French toast with apple and rum. Avocado toast comes on sourdough with basil, salsa verde, pickles and Aleppo pepper with the choice to add poached eggs. An homage to the golden arches, the McMother’s sandwich comes on an everything bagel with white cheddar, fried egg, sausage, rosemary duck fat tater tots and salsa libre.

When building and sourcing the food and drink menus, Lynch and his team are highly aware of tight budgets these days thanks to skyrocketing costs and inflation.

“For us, we strive for consistency and quality of ingredients that won’t break the bank for our customers,” he said. “That usually ends up being a mix of local and regional purveyors.” For reference, all cocktails are $14 and the single smashburger is $16.

Prepping to open

Leading up to opening, the Mother’s Ruin team hosted a series of popups at Faculty Lounge, the Royal American, Proof Bar, Sugey’s Bar and Last Saint.

“The pop ups definitely solidified our opinion on how great the local food and beverage community is here,” said Lynch. “We saw such warm and positive vibes at all of the popups. We’re really excited about Charleston because we feel the crowd will be more like our original location than any of the others. That crowd is the most diverse, which we love. From daytime shoppers, to tourists, to locals, and a heavy dose of our hospitality industry friends.”

Mother’s Ruin is open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. on the weekends. After 9 p.m., it is 21+ until closing.

“With all the great choices of where to spend your time and money in Charleston, we don’t think you should choose Mother’s Ruin over anywhere else,” said Lynch. “Instead, we think you should come to Mother’s for a drink before dinner, or when you’re out with friends and need a change of scenery, or after a happy hour to grab a bite. We love it when you come by after dinner to grab a nightcap or before you go to a show. The point is, we just like to be here for whatever you need us for.”

The Ocean We Swim In wades in plights, local waters

Most everyone has a secret they’d rather not air in the public. If you’re a Charleston artist of a certain age, you may or may not want them splashed across the walls of its most venerated Charleston art museum.

In The Ocean We Swim In, the evocative, absorbing new drama by Summerville resident Brad Erickson at PURE Theatre, it appears that a tango with undisclosed truth applies to art critics, too.

Drawing wholly and intricately from its Lowcountry locale to mine universal questions on art and truth, the play is now enjoying its world premiere production directed by PURE’s Sharon Graci. It runs at Cannon Street Arts Center through May 9.

The stakes at the heart of this highly localized Lowcountry work involve a critic, Jack (R.W. Smith), who has been unceremoniously dislodged from a gig in California. He has landed in an historic Summerville home with his partner Dylan (Michael Smallwood), where he aims to see his name in bylines again.

A professional lifeline comes by way of the Rutledge, an esteemed, fictional Charleston arts museum primed for a retrospective of the work of Thomas “Tommy” Manigault Legare (Andrew Puckett). Its curator (Joy Vandervort-Cobb) has tapped Jack to write a piece on the artist for the show’s catalog.

To do so, Jack meets the maker himself, as the 100-year-old local legend is still alive and tippling at a nearby assisted living facility. Steeped in a Southern drawl that’s not quite as Geechee as it might have been, the artist remains agile enough to deflect Jack’s point-blank questions on why his subjects were mainly Black — and whether that is a non-starter in modern-day stances on cultural appropriation.

If Charleston Renaissance bells are ringing, your hearing is sound. In the second act, we time travel from 2021 to 1946, closer to the city’s celebrated era of artistic revival–with the help of voiceovers from the present-day Tommy and character pivots from the performers.

In Pawleys Island, the character Ben, played by Smith, breaks bread with a younger Tommy, along with a luminary guest Dorothy Heyward, played by Vandervort-Cobb, and an actor, Jerry, played by Smallwood. Fresh from the war, and, the young Black performer has been enlisted for their play destined for New York City.

Local culture vultures will know the accomplished Heyward, who was married to DuBose, the author of the novel that was the basis for George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. Any critic worth their mettle would get they are rubbing shoulders with yesteryear’s Charleston art world royalty, many of whom in recent years have been hoisted on the petard of their own works.

But back to Jack: While he mulls casting aspersions on Tommy’s problematic oeuvre, his partner Dylan deals with a dalliance with presumed ghosts back at the house, which happens to be the former home of Tommy. Occurrences transpire, including the emergence of never-before-seen paintings that tell an altogether different story of the artist and his life as a gay man.

All of the shrouded mystery is manifest on the production’s spare set via swaths of dark gossamer fabric, falling over their furniture as if they were in a Dickens novel and serving as a metaphorical veil that begs lifting, as the play explicitly articulates, both for the artist and the critic.

Jack’s truth, as it happens, is writ large on the pages of his own journal, which he uses as collateral to coax Tommy’s own. This involves transformative events that have haunted the artist’s life and works, and

apparently his former digs, too, concerning deepening connections as a gay man and his bearing witness to the racial hatred roiling in those winsome Pawleys waves.

In that regard, I yearned for more– to not just glean the moment in Tommy’s life he deems its most profound, but to feel it. Solid performances from the three cast members further this, but the tenderness of the thenforbidden desire could go deeper still to establish the imminent tragedy to be more palpable still.

That’s not to say I didn’t feel. For this critic, the subject is tricky, if not triggering, though for the record I have never been cancelled. Still, anyone “disappeared” from a high-profile perch under shrouded circumstances knows the agency of revealing the truth and the murmurs when it is suppressed.

That being said, in today’s high-cancellation times, you don’t have to be an arts critic or an elder artist to register the sting of Jack’s predicament or the spectre of Tommy’s ghosts, or to weigh the agency of separating the artist from the art. And if you relish kicking around the attics of the Lowcountry’s storied cultural past, as I do — not to mention the promise of its continued vitality through our own local storytellers like Erickson — take a swim in this affectingly honest, poignant, homegrown play.

IF YOU WANT TO GO: The Ocean We Swim In runs through May 9 at Cannon Street Arts Center, 134 Cannon St. Tickets range from $15 to $50. More: puretheatre.org

Charleston’s Mantra to release new ‘yacht rock’ EP at Music Farm

There was a time when expressing your affection for soft-rock ’70s hits like “How Deep Is Your Love” by the Bee Gees or “Peg” by Steely Dan would’ve gotten you ostracized, if not beaten up. Those songs are from a genre that would later be termed “yacht rock.”

It is music built on lush harmonies, pristine studio production, jazz influences and an easygoing beachy vibe. It’s about a certain affluent-sounding slick sophistication: mellow grooves, top-tier session musicianship and polished production. Think the Doobie Brothers, Boz Scaggs or Christopher Cross.

It was out of style virtually the moment pop culture moved on, but in 2026, local bands like Mantra are paying tribute to yacht rock.

The band’s self-titled new EP is a shining example of Gen Z’s love of smooth grooves. Mantra plays a release show at the Music Farm on May 1 to celebrate.

The band, which formed a few years back at a very unofficial backyard concert venue called Stu’s House, is centered around the nucleus of singer/guitarist Ben Patrick and keyboard player Noah James, but bass player Justin McRaney wrote “Somebody’s Fool,” the first song, which nails the aesthetic perfectly.

The rhythm is laid back, the production is polished, the harmonies are lighter than air and the lyrics detail a classic romantic trope: “I’m somebody’s fool when I think of you,” Patrick coos as the backing vocals soothe his heartbreak.

The production, courtesy of engineer Corey Campbell, feels so ’70s that you can practically feel the shag rug on the studio walls.”

“I think we’re drawn to yacht rock because of how complex the music can be,” James told the Charleston City Paper. “But it’s still beautiful sounding. It’s not overstimulating. It just feels good.”

“If you listen to ‘How Deep Is Your Love?’ by the Bee Gees, that’s a hit song with like 12 different chords in it,” Patrick said. “But it’s still a catchy song and that’s what’s fascinating about the genre. We get complicated with some of our changes, but it never feels like we’re doing too much.”

The EP’s next track, “Emmy Likes Picking Pockets,” is a clap-along rocker that tells the story of a pretty girl with a rebellious streak.

“Bye bye,” Patrick sings in a sedated croon to his sticky-fingered lover. “No one’s gonna save you this time.”

It’s a more modern twist on the yacht rock sound, with a sun-splashed groove that’s a lot closer to Jack Johnson or G. Love and Special Sauce than Steely Dan.

Charleston’s yacht-rock Mantra makes debut with new self-titled EP on May 1 at Music Farm

Patrick, the band’s primary songwriter, wrote “Emmy Likes Picking Pockets.”

Much like those 1970s yacht-rock titans, he spent years tinkering with it before releasing it.

“I started writing it in 2020, and I didn’t finish it until 2025,” he said. “I wrote the first verse and then totally scratched it. It was a song about all my friends, and then I turned it into a breakup song.”

Patrick still wasn’t happy with “Emmy,” though. Then one day he went into the studio and Campbell heard him messing around with the song’s guitar riff.

“He said it was a really cool song and that all it needed was a chorus,” Patrick said. “So we wrote the chorus together, and then we had it.”

If you’re one of the previous generation (or two) who grew up rolling your eyes at the songs you might hear at the dentist’s office, this admiration for the soft-rock of the late ’70s and early ’80s is probably surprising. But it’s important to note that the love this band has for that soft-rock sound we once called “cheesy” is genuine.

In fact, Patrick said Mantra will throw in some of those classic yacht-rock songs at its Music Farm release show (after all, the EP only has two songs) and that the crowd will eat those songs up.

“It’s really fun for us to cover yacht rock songs because they’re very interesting for us to play,” James said. “It’s a fun challenge and everybody loves it. We love to play ‘Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)’ by Looking Glass because it always hits live. People sing along and love it. This music never went out of style for us.”
