Black-owned businesses and Black-run organizations are getting a bit of spotlight thanks to Charleston business advocacy group Lowcountry Local First’s (LLF) Buy Black + Love Local campaign, which launched beginning this month in celebration of Black History Month. LLF’s online local-indie business directory helps consumers find Black-owned businesses in their area, and that’s not the only resource mentioned in the campaign announcement. The Racial Equity Institute, Avery Research Center, NAACP, Black Lives Matter and more were highlighted by LLF, encouraging community members to support these organizations working to make shifts in racial equity, inclusion and justice. “If the playing field isn’t level for all aspiring entrepreneurs and business leaders to be able to succeed, to start their dream business, to support their family and community, to access funding sources — then the systems are broken,” LLF communications director Jordan Amaker said. “Communities fail. Democracy fails. We’re working every day, not just in February, to flip the power structures and ensure that our community’s existing and future Black and brown business owners have the social, knowledge and financial capital needed to transform their lives.”

And when it comes to Black-owned businesses, LLF’s team has no shortage of partners. With a list of business owners working alongside LLF in its community business academy, the group is offering a helping hand to up-and-coming entrepreneurs and local staples alike.

A fresh take on a traditional concept

Tanya Hearn started crafting charcuterie boards for friends and family as a hobby during the pandemic. Food-related hobbies weren’t uncommon during the hard times, with many taking up bread-baking or gradening, but Hearn took hers a step further, creating a stable business, Charcuterie Happy Board, in October 2021. “October 14 — I’ll never forget that day,” Hearn said. “I got my business license right before Thanksgiving and started getting orders in. I started looking into commercial kitchen spaces right away.” Amaker said Hearn represents the driving spirit behind LLF’s Community Business Academy. The academy was started in light of the gap in income and wealth between minority and white households in Charleston and white households, according to former LLF director Jamee Haley. But getting started without a lot of these connections and a network was difficult, Hearn said, especially since it was during the height of the pandemic’s delta surge.

The Charleston Animal Society (CAS) is offering a $15,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and felony conviction of those involved in the shootings of three dogs in the past month in Orangeburg County. “Through our No Kill South Carolina 2024 initiative, we remain committed to fighting cruelty wherever it exists,” said CAS President and CEO Joe Elmore. “We are angry, and we want those responsible for shooting these dogs caught and prosecuted, and we fully support law enforcement efforts to bring the guilty parties to justice.” The three separate incidents will each have a separate reward of $5,000 offered for information leading to those responsible. The announcement was made on the organization’s Facebook page over the weekend. All three dogs who were shot are recovering after suffering severe trauma and receiving intensive medical treatment. DHEC to shift to weekly COVID reporting, close many testing sites

The state Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) beginning in March will gradually close multiple state-operated vendor testing sites in all counties and make big changes to how they report various COVID metrics. The change in COVID-19 practices comes in light of the accuracy, convenience and now-widespread availability of rapid at-home tests and a significant decrease in demand for drive-through testing. These tests are now the most effective tool to reduce the spread of COVID-19, according to a statement from DHEC. However, since these test results are not reportable by the state agency, as of March 15, new case counts and positivity rates will no longer be reported since DHEC can no longer ascertain accurate numbers. The agency will continue to report hospitalizations and deaths, which they say are more important metrics to measure, on a weekly basis. “DHEC is confident that these changes will ensure South Carolinians continue to have the resources and information they need to make informed decisions and protect themselves and their families from COVID-19,” a Feb. 18 press release reads. DHEC will also begin to gradually close state-operated vendor testing sites in all counties where DHEC PCR test providers are not the sole provider. The closures will begin March 1 with counties with five or more non-DHEC PCR test providers, and end April 1. The move also follows national headlines saying the world may be entering an endemic phase rather than pandemic with regards to COVID-19, with new infections on the decline. City Paper’s daily COVID updates will continue until March 15, coinciding with the shift in reporting from DHEC. —Skyler Baldwin

Citadel students form group to honor Hollings’ legacy By Andy Brack A dozen Citadel cadets recently formed the Ernest F. Hollings Society of The Citadel to honor the legacy of the late United States senator and governor who graduated from the military college in 1942. “We are doing this because of our belief that Senator Hollings’ legacy needs more attention on the Citadel campus in the mission of production of principled leadership,” said Cadet John J. Acker of Bluffton, chairman of the new Acker group. “This duty must be done by cadets for the benefit of cadets. It’s also personal to me because I was such a great admirer.” Retired Marine Gen. Glenn M. Walters, who is president of the college and a 1979 graduate, said in a statement that Hollings was long seen as a champion for veterans,

military families, ocean policy, conservation and civil rights. “Senator Hollings’ work as a globally known, principled leader — and one of The Citadel’s most accomplished alumni — aligns well with our core values of honor, duty and respect. He will no doubt serve to inspire members of this new cadet club for many years.” Hollings died at age 97 in 2019, 14 years after retiring from the U.S. Senate in which he served for 38 years. He was widely recognized as a “tell it like it is” national leader who built a legacy to reduce hunger, fix the national budget, protect oceans, keep America competitive with a robust trade policy, help veterans and fund education. He had a practical, intelligent approach to complex problems and a scintillating wit that often featured homespun aphorisms, such as how “the ox is in the ditch” to encourage people to pull together to find solutions. At Hollings’ 2019 funeral in Summerall Chapel on The Citadel campus, now-President Joe Biden eulogized him as a leader

who embodied South Carolina. “He was South Carolina,” said Biden, who served with Hollings for 32 years. “With every breath he brought hope to so many in this state and around the country,” later adding how The Citadel meant everything to Hollings. “He talked about The Citadel like it was, in the literal sense, his citadel.” In the new society’s charter, cadets recognized Hollings’ legacy of leadership. “Ernest F. Hollings lived the ideals of The Citadel by answering the call of duty and service to country time and again.” Students created a seal for the Hollings Society that “embodied the high ideals and pillars that Fritz lived his life by — ‘Modesty, Courage and Integrity.’” Acker said the new society, which will be supported by a volunteer board of directors comprised of former Hollings aides and colleagues, is a non-partisan, non-political group that will take on service opportunities, such as volunteering for local conservation and anti-hunger projects. Acker said he never met Hollings, but was inspired by the senator and has learned a lot from his service to the state. “I admire Fritz because of who he was,” the cadet said. “In every position he was elected to and every challenge he endeavored, Fritz gave all he had and used every resource to solve problems. He did this without thinking of the political or public perception, without the stranglehold of partisanship.” Acker also said he hoped the society would place a campus memorial to Hollings, who he thought was the college’s most distinguished graduate of the 20th century. “The Citadel’s mission is to produce principled leaders in all walks of life, through the values of honor, duty and respect,” he siad. “Who better exemplifies this mission and these values? A soldier, statesman and conservationist — a true Citadel man who worked tirelessly to feed and educate South Carolinians who needed help. Fritz epitomizes what the Citadel tries to produce. “I love supporting locally owned businesses,” she said. “I hope in the future I will be able to offer products that are local, even if it’s just dessert or somebody’s cheese or wine. That support is so important.”

A pair of sister business networking organizations — BLK Charleston, the for-profit social network, and Black Charleston Professionals (BCP), a nonprofit — seek to provide minority entrepreneurs with the recognition they felt was lacking in day-today business in the Lowcountry. “There wasn’t really much on the social platform highlighting professionals here in Charleston, Black owned businesses to be exact.” said BLK Charleston founder Miranda Grimmage. “BCP … allows us to really make a difference in the community, bring awareness and do the work.” Grimmage said being raised in Black barbershops was vital to her entrepreneurial spirit as she grew older, eventually leading her to start her own business. And while BCP membership director LaShea DuBois didn’t Grimmage have a barber shop upbringing, she said the Black community has always been built on entrepreneurship. But both noticed the same gap in support for minority-owned and up-and-coming businesses. “We are in DuBois Charleston, the destination for weddings, the destination for tourism, but what we see is that most of the people who get highlighted are either in downtown Charleston or out in Mount Pleasant,” DuBois said. “When we get into these gems out in Summerville, out in Goose Creek, we don’t get that same type of advertising or patronage. We want to be the plug for those businesses — to bring the tourists there just as much as to the peninsula.” “We all get gratification out of that,” Grimmage added. “We see the disparity as Black business owners ourselves, so anything we can do to create an easier path — that’s our goal.” As leaders for a business network themselves, the partnership with LLF fell into place naturally. “It just came from a simple conversation,” DuBois said. These types of partnerships — those that come easily — are what DuBois and Grimmagee said they hope to offer to their members.

A downtown man’s bicycle was reported stolen, and it was described as a silver color with the word “Schwinn” printed in gray on the cross bar. The man admitted the bike isn’t actually a Schwinn, he just thought it would make it look cooler. RUNNERS UP Police left an angry drunken man in the care of his buddy, who told officers he would take the drunk home. The officer later found the friend again downtown, who said the drunken man had gotten angry with him, tried to fight him and ran away. A West Ashley man reportedly tried to get out of a citation for drug possession by offering the responding officer a toke from his pipe. Well, at least we know his parents raised him right. Sharing is caring, after all. Police asked a downtown man why he had a large bump on his forehead, attempting to make sure he was medically OK. Bolster education instead of cutting income taxes by 8,000 million dollars G

ov. Henry McMaster and state House Republicans want to cut income taxes a whopping $600 million every year and up to $1 billion a year within five years. Key Senate leader Harvey Peeler, R-Cherokee, says he wants even more — a $900 million cut plus a one-time billion-dollar rebate. But these efforts simply smell, particularly in light of an election just months away. What’s even more disturbing is that nobody seems to be thinking of the long-term impact of taking billions out of state coffers when pressing priorities, such as South Carolina’s substandard education system, continue to go lacking. Over 10 years, a tax cut of this size would remove about $8 billion from the state’s budget. Not sure how much that really is? Think about it in terms of millions. It’s the equivalent of 8,000 bundles of one dollar bills, bundled by the million. It’s four times the amount the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wants to spend on the most expensive single construction undertaking in Charleston’s long history — building a huge new seawall around the entire peninsula. In a poor state that has underinvested in public education for generations, can we really afford to spend less on real needs? South Carolina perennially ranks at the national bottom in delivering high-quality K-12 education. Sure, there are pockets of good schools in some metropolitan areas, but as a whole, this state doesn’t offer a broad, top-notch educational system that’s the envy of anywhere. In fact, we just barely keep up because we keep doing what we’ve always done — underinvesting to get by, which keeps the legacy of the state’s plantation culture alive. Don’t believe it? Guess which state underfunded public education by $4.4 billion

between 2010 and 2018 by not following its own state law to supply enough money to pay for the required base student cost? The only way we’re going to get out of the education ditch we’ve been digging since the 1800s is to start investing at a higher rate so we can catch up to other states, including North Carolina and Georgia, which continue to invest more to give opportunities to their students so they can succeed in the 21st century economy. So think about the ramifications of taking $1 million some 8,000 times from state coffers over 10 years. If we put that kind of money into public education, we could build 200 new $40 million schools, such as Harbor View Elementary on James Island, which would serve 100,000 South Carolina students. Or we could start paying our invaluable teachers much better, instead of just striving for averages. Or we could dig out of other underinvestment holes in health care, prisons, roads, bridges or flooding. Let’s stop feeding at the policy bottom. Let’s not continue to lose our children because of an education system that’s failing them. Let’s not continue to miss opportunities for new industries because world-class talent doesn’t want to move here thanks to our schools. Let’s throw away shiny balls like income tax cuts and pay attention to what really matters — moving South Carolina forward. For generations, South Carolina has had misplaced priorities. The General Assembly needs to get its act together and make solid, continuing, large investments in public education. More rainy days are ahead. Lawmakers need to think strategically about our taxes, for a change, instead of playing our next generation for suckers.

Awed by 47 writers in new book on racial truths By Herb Frazier When I met Horace Mungin a decade ago on the beach at Sullivan’s Island, a kente cloth scarf draped his shoulders and a matching kufi cap adorned his head. I also wore our ancestors’ clothing, a waist-length garment made of coarse country cloth from Sierra Leone.

Horace was in the audience at Fort Moultrie Visitors’ Center during the annual Middle Passage Remembrance Program. I participated with a talk about my reporting trips to West African sites where our captured ancestors Mungin were held before they were shipped across the Atlantic. Horace liked my talk. When he greeted me on the beach, he said, “You the man!” I responded quickly, “No, brother. You the man!” My few words could not be compared

with the volumes of his edgy poems and essays on the Black experience in America. When Horace was about 5 years old his family left Hollywood, S.C., for New York City. While in the Bronx during the mid1960s, he started writing poetry at the birth of the Black Arts Movement. In 2017, the National Museum for African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., included a video of Black Forum Magazine, which Horace founded in 1970. His magazine is a permanent part of the museum’s statement of the Black Arts Movement. Horace returned to the Charleston area in 1989 with his wife, Gussie, who’s also a South Carolinian. Horace continued to write. In 2020, Evening Post Books published his Notes from 1619: A Poetic 400-year Reflection. In this collection of poems, Horace pushed against the injustices imposed by the conscious erasure of African American history. Before Notes from 1619 was released, Horace emailed me and others in early November 2018 with an idea for a public event to address the harm done to people of African descent as a result of slavery’s legacy. He sought to pair his poems with essays written by others then hold conversations on topics that are uncomfortable for some.

He asked McLeod Plantation if it would stage the event. He called the presentation: “Black History for White People Only.” McLeod agreed to the five-part lecturepoetry series, but his title was too jarring. Horace settled on: “Ukweli: Searching for Healing Truth.” “Ukweli” is the Swahili word for truth. The event began in early 2020. The pandemic interrupted it, but it resumed later that year. Then, Middleton Place invited Horace to bring a Ukweli topic on Black women to its site. When he told me this, I was surprised and inspired. I told him this lightning must be captured in a bottle. Let’s do a book of poetry and essays! “Yeah, an anthology of poems and essays aimed at awakening the ignorant and the misinformed about the truth (Ukweli) of the racial divide in America,” he wrote in an email. “You should plan on being the editor to solicit, select and format the anthology.” I was immediately enthralled, but I insisted he must co-edit it with me. After all, Ukweli was his vision, not mine. And now I’m proud to report that Ukweli: Searching for Healing Truth, South Carolina Writers and Poets Examine American Racism was released Saturday at

McLeod Plantation Historic Site on James Island. Hurrah! Ukweli is a collaboration with 47 of the best essayists, poets and thinkers in South Carolina and those who know its history. Horace and I were awed by how quickly this racially diverse team embraced Ukweli. They explore the Black experience in America from different perspectives, examining sensitive social topics through objective analysis and personal stories. We also were grateful to Evening Post Books for moving Ukweli from an idea to a book. Horace was not with us at McLeod. He passed away Sept. 25, 2021. Gussie stood with us as we remembered Horace and celebrated Ukweli. It’s his vision. He’s the man! If there’s anything everyone needs this year, it’s a good time.

A great dinner, an exhilarating ride and a solid laugh. Theatre 99 is certain it can provide one of those, and in the best way possible. They are teaming up with the Charleston City Paper again, after last year’s hiatus, to present the Charleston Comedy Festival from Feb. 23-26. The Charleston Comedy Festival has provided almost 20 years of laughs to the Lowcountry. The festival frequently brings some of the biggest names in stand-up, improv and sketch comedy to Charleston for a variety of shows all over town. This year is no different, with the usual mix of local talent and visiting artists bringing the funny to four separate venues across town. One of this year’s big names is Amber Nash. Well known as the voice of Pam Poovey in the FX animated series Archer, Nash is once again back for a festival she’s been attending since 2007. “I love Brandy (Sullivan) and Greg (Tavares),” Nash said of Theatre 99’s founders and resident improv impresarios. “Because I’ve been coming for so long, they’ve become great friends of mine.” Nash is an accomplished improvisor and comedian with a long career. An Evening of Improv with Archer’s Amber Nash will see her flaunt those skills at Theatre 99, alongside her husband Kevin Gillese from Atlanta’s Dad’s Garage Theater Company. Audiences can expect short-form scenes with guests, and perhaps a few long-form shows as well. Nash said she’s excited to take the stage with friends and performers she doesn’t get to work with frequently. “My favorite thing about doing improv is that you can do anything you want,” Nash said of the kinds of shows she likes to perform. “I really enjoy playing stupid characters. Archer has recently been renewed for a thirteenth season and sees high viewership with fans around the world. Having such a high profile role can have an impact on a performer, but Nash doesn’t think it affects her stage work — particularly because a great many Archer fans don’t even know what she looks like. “I think that most often people will come to see a show

because they want to see an improv show, and then they might be like, ‘Wait a minute, I recognize that voice,’ ” Nash said. Most audiences, she reckons, just wanna see the improv. The Archer connection: “Might just be an extra little bonus.” Aside from Nash, Theatre 99 will also host perennial favorites Mary Kay Has a Posse, the all-female improv comedy group whose talk show format brings houses down every year. Moral Fixation, Spoons and Much Ado About Something will combine for an Improv Comedy Marathon. The Have Nots! are taking the stage and taking audience suggestions, and Take the Funny and Run will feature more Theatre 99 ensemble members doing a show. FAME Performing Arts in Mount Pleasant will play host to the Charleston Stand Up Comedy Showcase. The funny people taking the stage across two nights of stand-up will be Jon Antoine, Josh Bates, Mona Bender, Jody Carter, Bill Davis, Matt Dieterich, Laura Dixon, Sarah Hartmann, Pia Helensdotter, Austin Hughes, Shawna Jarrett, Paige Laidlaw, Edwin Littman aka Tru Stories, Erin Lok, Robin Phoenix, Hagan Ragland, Stan Shelby, Big Ike Smalls, Dan Sweeney and Kevin Williams. Coming to the Old Trolley Theatre in Summerville is C.H.A.M.P.S and YesANDventures, a dual show between two great groups of improv comedians. C.H.A.M.P.S features a collection of old school friends bringing fastpaced and wacky comedy. YesANDventures brings some Dungeons and Dragons flavor to the festival, telling a random and hilarious story influenced by the rolls of a giant inflatable 20-sided die. North Charleston gets some laughs too, with shows happening at The Sparrow. Nationally acclaimed standup Lisa Smith, taking a break from her residency at Star Bar and Laughing Skull Lounge in Atlanta, will hit the Sparrow stage. She’ll no doubt have audiences losing their breath with her stories. Kate Willett will bring jokes to The Sparrow stage too, having wowed audiences on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and her own special on Netflix’s Comedy Lineup. The Sparrow will also play host to a onenight only reunion of former Charleston comedy duo Tim and Vince. This and That with Tim and Vince, playing just Feb. 24 at The Sparrow, will feature Tim Hoeckel and Vince Fabra reprising the show they started at Theatre 99 years ago and which ended when Fabra moved to Birmingham, Ala. “I haven’t been back to Charleston since we left in early May of last year,” Fabra said. “So this will be a reunion for Tim and I, seeing a lot of friends and good people I used to collaborate with for the first time in awhile.” Photos provided This and That will start with onstage banter between the two friends, which should Comedians Tim Hoeckel (top) and Vince Fabra (above) are part be exceptionally funny considering the time of Charleston Comedy Festival they’ve spent apart. Afterwards, they put together improv scenes based on the details and themes from their standup sets. “We both enjoy the formats of standup and improv,” Fabra said. He points to improv shows using callbacks from previous jokes as a great way to build laughs in a comedy show. “It just felt like a really good way to structure a show. I like to refer to it as a three-act play.” Charleston audiences are in for a week jam-packed with hilarity. Four great venues hosting some of the funniest performers in Charleston, the Southeast, and the nation. It’s been a long couple of years, but if laughter is the best medicine, the Charleston Comedy Festival 2022 might just cure what ails you.

Indie rapper Poraa approaches her freestyle songwriting with a solid sense of self-confidence

Poraa stands on her own two feet By Chelsea Grinstead Charleston native and indie rapper Poraa exudes an artistic conviction gleaned from years of shaping her image since long before she stormed into the local music scene in 2020. Poraa’s in your face rap has surpassed a million streams, yet, she considers herself a shy person behind the scenes and was hesitant to even share her first song. And while it’s no secret that women are underrepresented in the hip-hop industry, Poraa calls the local support she has received overwhelming. Local magazine Black Business Prosperity named her female rap music artist of the year in 2021, solidifying her as a noticeable force in the Lowcountry. “My hometown — they support me 100%,” Poraa told City Paper. Taking inspiration from Crime Mob’s female rappers Princess and Diamond, as well as Lil’ Kim and City Girls, the hard hitting lyricism and rapid tempo on Poraa’s most recent album 10 Steps Ahead reflects southern rap proficiency and girl-power prowess. “I don’t want to be a female rapping about

kicking in doors — I don’t do that,” Poraa said. “I can rap about what I do or what females do. The things that I say in rap are the things that females are scared to say. They like my music because I’m saying what they’re thinking, and now they have an excuse to say, ‘I can say this because it’s an art now.’ ” Poraa said each track on 10 Steps Ahead started as a freestyled verse she developed as a songwriter, playing off themes or ideas she uncovered spontaneously in her stream of consciousness. She then perfected the material verse by verse at Str8 Drop Studio in North Charleston. While Poraa is accustomed to doing featured verses on other artists’ songs, she said she wanted to have a collaboration on at least one track for 10 Steps Ahead that would demonstrate a diverse technique. She landed on local rapper Theoo for the song “Do It For” after working with him on a couple of his unreleased tracks. In the near future, Poraa said she plans to take her time and release singles rather than

a full-length project. She’s also working on another another music video with a similar vibe to her popular YouTube track, “Bully Shit.” Raw, aggressive and peppered with profanity, Poraa said “Bully” was her way of reclaiming her territory. “Around that time everyone was saying, ‘Oh, she’s not a rapper. I’m tired of her rapping. I’m tired of hearing this or that.’ So that video was like, ‘OK, let me get on my bully shit and show y’all I can rap about this, this and this.’ That’s what that video is all about. “It’s all me,” she added. “I don’t have management, I don’t have a team. Studio time, videos — it’s just me.”

Tank and the Bangas to play Charleston Wine + Food Festival New Orleans R&B/soul band Tank and the Bangas will play at Riverfront Park for Charleston’s annual Wine + Food Festival NightCap performance at the Culinary Village on March 5. Morgan Creek Grill has served IOP residents and tourists on the water for over 17 years, but like many restaurants in the Charleston area, it was forced to close its doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For months, the restaurant sat empty as the Town of Isle of Palms, which owns the property, tried to figure out what to do with the old building. The town even issued requests for proposals. Fortunately, IOP residents and Mex 1 Coastal Cantina owners Dave and Chrissy Lorenz and Jon Bushnell had sent the town a proposal to completely renovate and reinvent the property as Islander 71 Fish House and Deck Bar. “We had lived on the island for a while and we knew it needed kind of a kick-start from a branding perspective, interior work and all that kind of stuff,” Lorenz said about the decision to take over the space. “So being locals, we knew what the potential was there.” “We want the island to be proud of this place,” he added. “It’s a great asset for the city, and we want to bring it to light. It’s got an amazing view and is an amazing location. We felt like it was always kind of under-utilized.” Getting the space was a long process Lorenz said. Instead of negotiating the lease with one person, it was with the council of IOP since the city owned the property. Nevertheless, the Lorenz’s and Bushnell called the town “great to work with.” Since receiving the approval to renovate the property, the trio has spent the past year re-working both the interior and exterior of the building. COVID-19 setbacks related to construction material shortages and price increases delayed some of the processes, said Lorenz, but they “were seasoned on it … and

Deep Water Vineyard, Charleston’s only vineyard and winery, is hosting its annual Cork Shuckin’ Festival on from 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Feb. 26, at 6775 Bears Bluff Rd. on Wadmalaw Island. However, that allowed Lorenz and team to create a new double decker deck on the back of the building that faces the Intracoastal Waterway . The renovations to the back of the restaurant were a “big part in utilizing” the building’s location, Lorenz said, allowing guests to view the water on two sides — the Intracoastal Waterway in the back and Morgan Creek out front. Other renovations to the space include higher ceilings for an “open and lighter feeling,” a front bar area near the boat ramps, perfect for viewing the area’s “Qualified Captains,” more TVs for sporting events and an expanded open space in the front, where “locals could just come up on their golf carts and hang out.” “It’s just a better utilization of the space, in terms of better views of the water,

which is what everybody wants,” Lorenz said, adding that despite water everywhere, there aren’t actually many places in Charleston to dine on the water . “So that was our first thought,” he said. ‘How do we maximize the views?’” As for the food, Lorenz said it will be “casual, very approachable and craveable local seafood.” Islander 71 is planned to hold 300 to 400 seats, he said, and the best way to keep the quality of food consistent is to “keep it simple” with local ingredients. “I really just want to speak to what people want when they go out on the water, right?” he added. “You know, casual seafood, a good burger, a good steak. So you come and you’re going to get your favorites, and we’re going to do them very well.” Islander 71 is looking to open to the public late March to early April, “barring any crazy delays” and “right in the sweet spot,” Lorenz said.

Firefly Distillery in North Charleston is hosting its second annual Food Truck Festival, featuring over 15 food trucks from the Charleston area, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Feb. 26. “It’s fun to bring a ton of flavors together and pair them with our distillery specialty cocktails for a great day outside,” said Scott Newitt, co-founder of Firefly Distillery. Guests are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets and hang out in Firefly’s four-acre field, enjoying live music and delicious food. —MP
