Maren Sanchez Lives On Through New Foundation

n Monday, September 26th, Donna Cimarelli introduced The Maren Sanchez Foundation to the University of New Haven campus. Cimarelli is the mother of Maren Sanchez’s, a young girl who was killed tragically on the morning of her junior
prom in 2014 at Jonathon Law High School in Milford, CT. Hosted by the University of New Haven Police Department, Donna Cimarelli presented in Dodds Theater where she discussed emotional, psychological and physical manipulation. She wanted to impact students and have them learn to become aware of taking action and stepping up with a
primary goal of empowering and educating girls to defend themselves. The Maren Sanchez Home Foundation was named after the song she loved by American Idol winner Phillip Phillips “Home.” Maren sang and played the song on her guitar for her high school talent show and won, so it is a very special memory people have of her because of her moving performance.
The foundation was also named integrated the word home because of what “home” means for so many people. Love, security, acceptance, and nourishment are the feelings they want to people to reference the foundation with. Cimarelli wants to let who her daughter was transcend into other people’s lives. Plans to Expand to Alligntown With New Housing

the entire area, and will truly recreate the area around CVS. The reasons for this expansion might seem obvious, given the increasing number of students being admitted to the university, as well as the lack of local housing for students. The undertaking will produce a brand new housing complex that is within walking distance from main campus. The goal is also to develop the area into a real college town, and then build on that in the future as U.N.H. expands its reach to the surrounding areas. The clear concern when it comes to building these luxury apartments is the cost it will have for students. As university costs are already high, and students in some cases pay more to live in higher end dorms on campus (Celentano and WestSide), it will be telling to see how many
students are willing to pay the extra money for these luxury apartments. “I think students and parents are willing to pay a little bit more because it’s different,” said Beckerman. It was not yet decided how much the property would cost, but it was indicated by Beckerman that the rent would be more than average. Although, the argument is that the new properties would offer a lot more than are currently offered by university housing. The new apartments will be named The Atwood, Park Place, and The Forest. There is already construction happening for The Atwood which will be built right next to CVS. The other two buildings will be built across the street on either side of Forest Road. The Atwood will be completed by May of 2017, and they are currently
accepting applications for rental. Acorn and U.N.H. are currently working on a way to integrate the new buildings into the housing system. Park Place and The Forest are scheduled to be completed by 2019. The main goal of the university working with Acorn to develop this new “college town” area is the give U.N.H. “more presence in the area.” After the road construction is finished, there will be a sidewalk put n that will connect the main campus to these off campus housing complexes. The other objectives of expanding into this area is to fix the lack of suitable housing for university upperclassmen, who are not guaranteed housing at all. There is also an obvious lack of a college center in West Haven and U.N.H. hopes to be the revitalizing agent for the town.
Forty student researchers gathered in the Beckerman Recreation Center for a symposium and presentation of their summer projects. The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program gives students opportunities to expand knowledge in fields of their choosing. The program provides a stipend, on-campus housing, and resources for students to use as they work with faculty mentors to conduct research. On September 22, the SURF program celebrated its tenth anniversary. The student researchers proudly displayed large posters that summarized their research background, procedures, and findings. Fields covered ranged from music production to microbiology. Damani Piper worked under mentor Patrick River to analyze the creative process behind hip-hop music and how it is perceived when created electronically versus live performance. “This was inspired by a conversation I had with one of my professors we were talking about what makes a musician a real musician versus a digital musician,” Piper explained, “I wanted to
learn more about why people consider a guitarist a musician versus maybe Kanye West.” Researchers found inspiration in their studies and by exploring the world around them. They found innovative solutions to environmental problems through field studies and extensive research methods. Owen Johnson, a chemical engineering major, determined that “…neodymium is the most critical earth element… and analyzed to see whether it was financially viable to recycle it at this time”. Students such as Johnson found that as their research progressed, their overall focus and results evolved. “It was going to be totally different,” Owen laughed, describing the methods that he used, “We were going to initially do a more traditionally sustainability assessment… Instead, I went more into a look at the recyclability of them.” All of the students involved shed new light upon their research topics. The alumni of the program have progressed to higher levels of national research and graduate programs. The SURF program is available to students of all majors. However, this project has already been underway for some time. Acorn Group, a construction and retail development organization headed by David A. Beckerman is the company behind the new venture. The group is working alongside the city of Allingtown and the University of New Haven to make this new housing project open to students of the university. The apartments are not like Forest Hills or other off campus housing for U.N.H. They are privately owned buildings that will be luxury apartments open to U.N.H. students. Maren made a huge impact on those around her when she was alive, she always was including to everyone and was so friendly and did not like to hurt people’s feelings. Her school mourned for a while after Maren’s death, but then came back strong by spreading her spirit around the school and community. The school does an annual Celebration of the Life of Maren Sanchez called the Peace, Love and Music for Maren. The festival is sponsored in partnership through the Maren Sanchez Memorial Fund and The Maren Sanchez Home Foundation. The students of Jonathan Law and Foran High School in Milford benefited from the scholarship fund with $55-thousand awarded to graduation seniors. The celebrate Maren’s life and all she continues to bring to the community through music, art, and honoring all things that Maren loved. Bringing Cimarelli to U.N.H was campus officer Ony Sierra, who has been friends with her for over 35 years. In addition to being an office, Ony also teaches a self-defense class on campus. She knew that this presentation on campus would bring an impact and awareness to students. “Women tend not to want to hurt other’s
feelings, and it’s a problem that we see. I hope this presentation will help people to recognize the red flags and signs so they can be aware of them when they happen,” Sierra said. Maren was a victim of manipulation and stalking. To prevent this from happening to girls, society has to stop giving the wrong ideas. Girls needs to be confident enough to say “no” and fight back, which needs to not only be taught in schools, but at home. Everyone needs to know that the internal voice you continually ignore sometimes, or the gut feeling you get you have to follow the instinct of it and not brush it aside. The Maren Sanchez Home Foundation is partnering with Nick Newell, a mixed Martial Arts World Champion from Connecticut. Newell will be teaching selfdefense classes for girls and women, and developing a core program to be instituted nationally. Newell knows what it means to take action in hard situations and has experience in being a true up-stander. The foundation will be picking four girls from Maren’s high school to put through the selfdefense course with the hope that the girls will become ambassadors for the foundation. The goal is to educate people to know how to make space and get away from a bad situation, and how to prevent the situation from even happening.
An inspiring presentation form Cimarelli’s was the first time speaking publicly, and decided to speak out due to the launching of the foundation. She really wants the foundation to grow, and is looking for sponsors that believe in their vision. “I knew if I put something into action, it wouldn’t be small”, Cimarelli said. From the day her daughter passed, she did feel motivated and full of ideas. The idea for the foundation started small by doing charitable things, and it created her into being more giving and doing more selfless acts. That is who her daughter was, a selfless person full of love and cheeriness for all. Her energy lives on, and with this foundation it will only spread more. The mission statement of the foundation is to “challenge everyone who visits here to a Call for action. To get involved. To help a friend. To be aware of your surroundings and people’s actions, and to jump on board with the mission of the Maren Sanchez Home Foundation and join the Conversation.” Maren Victoria Sanchez’s Voice will be louder than it ever has been before, and will help change the lives of young girls all across the country and the world who are being psychologically, mentally and physically manipulated.

Over the years, we have blurred the lines between what we believe is right and wrong, instead of what is right and wrong. It does appear to be the same thing but believing what is right/wrong and what is actually right/ wrong are two different things because we can think or believe what we do is right/wrong but it isn’t necessarily right/wrong. Racism is wrong but depending on the context some people may argue that it is right to have racism or that people can be racist; it is also the same as sexism. Today, racism and sexismis a problem and will continue to be if we don’t fix it somehow.

Society has changed its views on everyone whether it is ethnicity, gender, or religion. Granted, there are some things that you cannot change but the things we can change no one wants to. Why is it that there are laws that are put in place about violence against women but can allow certain people or convicted persons to get reduced sentences from violating that very same law. The contradiction that is expressed proves how society can be manipulated into going against the values that this country stands for. The counterargument to this is that if said convicted person was a minority, then this person would be serving a life sentence or
possibly get the death penalty. Why is it that we can bend the law for some people and not for others? How is that justice or fair? Why do we need to bend the law in the first place, why can’t we convict people that are guilty and give them the punishment that fits their crime? Why does society have to make the simplest task difficult for those who are innocent but easy for those who are guilty? It proves to people that have common sense that our society doesn’t care about the welfare of the people in this country. It proves to us that safety is probably just a figment of our imagination because if we allow people who commit murder, rape, burglary, fraud etc. to be free, then are we no better than them. People who have committed a crime will get arrest (eventually), be processed, and sent to trial by jury of their peers, who are none other than people from their society. How can we protect others when we

––––––––––––––––––––– I define myself as a problem solver. Identify the issue. Find a solution. Solve. Thinking occasionally required. If I don’t know what to do, I identify what I know, find out what I can do, try a few things and figure out a solution. This is problem solving, thinking on one’s feet. I’ve noticed that we, as a whole, are getting lazy in using our minds for solving problems. It all starts with patience. Nowadays, we get everything so quickly. News? On your Twitter and news apps, in your hand. Information? Google it. Instant access for an instant answer. Writing a research paper? Research from your lap(top), trips to the library optional. Drama? Share the gossip with a Snap, text, Tweet, Direct Message, Instant Message… Imagine you are trying to submit an assignment on Blackboard. What do you do when
the page doesn’t load? What about when signing into insideUNH, and typing your password ‘correctly,’ but getting an error message? Computer not logging in fast enough? The monitor better prepare for my “you’ve got to be kidding me” stare. I have little patience for technology. I get frustrated easily. Usually it’s my fault. I think most people are this same way. My point is that we don’t have much patience anymore. From watching the news to sending a text, we want whatever it is sent, gone, done and behind us. Which presents the issue of thinking. Perhaps it’s in the form of an exam. Who wants short answers? Multiple-choice is where it’s at: if you don’t understand the question, the answers, the content, you just guess! 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 are reasonable odds. Multiple-guess requires no real brainpower. You can literally just pick one. You should, if necessary,
use your mind to break apart the words and eliminate choices that don’t fit to increase your odds. But who has the patience for that? I fully understand not being in the mood to do something. I’m very guilty of this. Not being in the mood, however, does not explain the lack of critical thinking and problem solving. We’re college kids. University students. Adults. We should constantly be thinking, solving problems, considering new perspectives. But we’re not. We’re just waiting for life to give us multiple choice, to provide the answers right now, to do the hard work for us. Thinking takes effort. Solving a problem takes effort. Put forth some effort. Think on your feet. Don’t ask for help until you know you can’t figure it out, or have at least tried to figure it out. Not everything has a good solution. Take some steps towards a possible solution. Try. Work. Think. Step back. Try again.

I absolutely cannot stand Kim Kardashian. While I’m all for wearing what you want and being a strong feminine icon, Kim isn’t an icon at all. She’s just flat out trashy and she really does not deserve her fame in the slightest. My biggest issue with her is that she dresses the way she does (essentially like a whore) AND she’s a mother. Once you are responsible for a baby or little kid you have to stop dressing how you want and start being a good role model for your children. I don’t mean that once you have kids you have to wear a turtleneck for the rest of your life, but just be considerate of what your children are seeing. I doubt many kids would love to see their mom walking around with her breasts hang-
ing out or in a really tight dress. It’s really just all about the children’s’ comfort level. If you’re “old” as your kids would call you, and you’re prancing through the streets in crop tops and short shorts, your kids are going to be embarrassed and a little creeped out. Another huge problem I have with her is HOW she got famous in the first place. I seriously do not understand why someone leaking a sex tape of you leads you to become famous. This is more so a problem I have with society than I have with her. The fact that making a sex tape makes you famous is ridiculous. It’s unfair for her to have found fame that way while mostly every other famous person got their start by working hard and having real talent. I understand there being a huge commotion over her when the sex

I don’t understand how people can be famous just for being famous. It may be petty of me because I personally am not famous for being famous and that’s upsetting, however, people making money just because of their personalities is absolutely stupid to me. Seeing as Kim Kardashian’s entire fame is simply based off of her personality, this is why I am such a strong disbeliever in her image. While everyone else is curling up on the couch or in bed on Sunday nights to watch ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians,’ I’m going to be keeping away from the Kardashians.

UNH Takes Down Pace in Blowout
Women’s Soccer First Conference Win

T
he 1-2 New Haven Chargers looked poised and ready to come out of week four with another win under their belts, the only thing standing between them and that win would be the 0-3 Pace University Setters. The last time the two teams met, the Chargers took a stand on Senior Day last season downing the Setters by a score of 34-3. Quarterback Ajee Patterson threw for 152 yards and two touchdowns on the day, while running back Trevor Officer, who rushed for 79 yards and a pair of touchdowns, led the team in rushing. The defense played stellar all day, holding the Pace offense to only 179 yards all together. Linebacker Tyler Condit as usual had a good game, finishing with 11 tackles, a team high. However, Condit wasn’t the only one who would have a day, the Charger defense forced three fumbles on the day, defensive end Ralph Jonathas, defensive back Mark Clements, who amounted a sack on the day as well, and linebacker Devin Porchia were responsible for one each. The Chargers would recover two of these fumbles, one would be scooped up by defensive lineman Drake Harris for a 69-yard touchdown. The Chargers, showing signs of new life, are coming off their first win of the season, in which they proceeded to crush the Saint Anselm Hawks by a score of 52-21. Patterson would put up career numbers finishing the contest with 326 yards passing and three touchdowns; his backfield partner didn’t have a bad day either. Running back Andre Anderson finally broke out of the rut he started the 2016 campaign in, ending the day with his first two touchdowns of the year and his first 100-yard rushing game, firsts of what Charger Nation hopes to be many. The defense definitely stepped up as well, Condit, a man of consistency, was up to his usual antics finishing the day as the team’s leading tackler with 17 tackles, but it felt he had more than that as he was involved in almost every play. it went to, who else, but Condit, the other half went to linebacker Corey Mitchell. Junior defensive back Nigel Davis would have the Chargers one and only interception on the day. On the other side, the Setters are coming off of their third straight loss on the year, this one coming at the hand of the American International Yellow Jackets by a score of 3-0. The Yellow Jackets kicked a field goal early in the first quarter and that was all they needed. The Pace offense just couldn’t get going, sophomore quarterback Dan Anerella only threw for 47 yards on eight completions and ended up throwing two interceptions on the day. The passing game wasn’t the only problem for the offense however, senior running back Michael Scotman didn’t have much of anything to write home about either, only rushing for 79 yards on 22 attempts. Fortunately for Pace, the defense played outstanding football, finishing the game with six sacks and an interception, redshirt senior Olatayo Ishola was the team’s sack leader with two to his name, while junior defensive back Chukwuemeka NjokuObi had the team’s one interception. Both teams are looking to continue their great play, the Chargers on both sides of the ball, while the Setters are looking for someone on offense to step up this weekend as they try to avoid starting their season dropping four straight games. On the other hand, the Patterson-led Chargers are looking to continue their winning ways as they try to notch their second straight. The Chargers started off the game just as hot as they ended the last one, the same was true for Patterson and Anderson. While their first drive ended with a field goal from junior Danny
Stock, the Chargers didn’t let that get them down as they came out on their next drive and scored the game’s first touchdown on a Patterson 1-yard touchdown run, giving them an early 10-0 lead over the Setters. New Haven didn’t look back, while Pace’s passing woes continued as they tried out redshirt junior Jason Habash at quarterback instead of Anerella. Just when it looked like Pace was going to turn things around after a fumble recovery by the punt team; specifically, junior linebacker Myles Martin, a play later Habash was picked off by junior defensive back Matt Olivo. From there, the Charger offense went to work again, this time looking for their third score of the day and trying to take Pace out of the game early. The Blue and Gold did exactly that on a 61-yard laser off the right arm of Patterson to senior wide receiver Rishawn Harris, putting the Setters into a 17-point hole, not even out of the first quarter at the time. The second quarter spelt much of the same for both teams: Pace’s offense couldn’t get going and the Chargers just kept charging ahead to what seemed like their easiest win so far. However, UNH wouldn’t let their foot off the gas pedal yet, as Patterson threw 12yard strike to Rishawn Harris, the second time the two would find the endzone. New Haven wouldn’t stop there though, as Anderson would get in on the touchdown parade, reaching pay dirt from one yard out and then again, a Pace three-andout later, this time from five yards out giving the Blue and Gold a 38-0 lead going into the half. Coming out of halftime, the Setters felt that a quarterback change would spark their offense so, they made the switch to
junior quarterback Fautino Saucedo. This proved to be a smart decision for Pace as they finally got on the scoreboard, after playing six straight quarters of scoreless football, with a 27-yard touchdown pass off the arm of Saucedo to junior wide receiver Tyler Mason. This time it was the Setters that wouldn’t take their foot of the gas, but that didn’t affect New Haven’s play in the slightest as the Chargers would kick a 26-yard field goal making the score 41-7 and giving Pace even more ground to make up. Apparently, the admission of Faustino Saucedo into the game breathed new life into Pace’s offense and the offense would take a 10 play, 75-yard drive and turn it into another touchdown score on the legs of senior running back Scotman. Again, Pace’s resurgence didn’t faze the Chargers at all as they continued to put points on the board and this time a new name would be called as the ball would cross the plane, that name would be freshman running back Ryan McCarthy scoring his first touchdown as a part of the New Haven Chargers. The game looked to be pretty much over and done with as the Chargers had what looked to be an insurmountable lead with not a lot of time left in the final quarter, but once again, Pace had other plans, even though, everyone figured that Pace was just playing for pride at this point, given the fact that as the game went on the two teams really seemed to be jarring back and forth with each other after almost every play in the second half resulting in a unusually high amount of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. In reality, they were looking to make a state-
On Tuesday, September 20 the Women’s Soccer team defeated St. Michaels to earn their first NE-10 Conference victory. Although the Chargers did come out on top, it wasn’t without a valiant fight from the Knights. The Chargers set the pace early in the game, dominating possession for the duration of the first half. This success was made possible with the combined efforts of the midfield and defense, and of course the urgency of the offence to move up the field. The Chargers took 17 shots, while the Knights took one. In the 17th minute, Senior Captain Danielle Widman found herself in a one-on-one with an opportunity to put the Chargers on the score board, but a player from St. Mikes was able to catch up to Widman and prohibit her from finding the net. In the 29th minute, St. Mikes threatened to take a 1-0 lead with a corner kick, but fortunately for the Chargers, the ball jutted off the goal post. Of the 17 shots that the Chargers took in the first half of play, they were able to connect on one; which came from the foot of Freshman Megan Georges with the help of Junior Allison Morgan. This was Georges’ first collegiate goal, and so

she and the team were doubly excited that this ball found the net. The Chargers would go into the half with a 1-0 lead over the Knights. At half-time, the ladies from UNH welcomed members of the faculty and staff in attendance onto the field to recognize them in celebration of Faculty/ Staff Appreciation Day. The Women’s Soccer team and other athletic teams as well, are always grateful to have the support, both academically and athletically, of their professors, advisors, and faculty liaisons. As the second half commenced, a new energy seemed to overcome the Knights. As a result, the Chargers seemed to fall behind for the opening minutes but quickly regained momentum and went to battle to extend their lead over St. Mikes. St. Mikes did not waste much time offensively. In the 51st minute, Senior Allegra DiCesare skirted the ball past Senior goalie Deandrea Nash to even the score at one. The Knights continued to press on, and in the 62nd minute of play, St. Mikes found themselves in a position to take the lead, but the Knights failed to connect on the wide open opportunity, soaring the ball way over the net. Just two minutes after the Knights threatened to take the lead, Nash suffered an injury and

The Patriots moved to 3-0 with their win on Thursday night, and it may already be time to start the inevitable conversation. Could this team go 16-0? Only two teams have gone undefeated in the NFL in regular season play, the 1972 Miami Dolphins and the 2007 New England Patriots. The Dolphins won their Super Bowl to cap the NFL’s only perfect season,
while the 2007 Patriots infamously fell one game short, losing to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII. The biggest reason for optimism that this could be a special year comes from the quarterback position. Twotime MVP Tom Brady has been serving his four game suspension in relation to “Deflategate” but the Patriots haven’t missed a beat. Sophomore quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo looked sharp and led his team to a 2-0 start before being sidelined with a throwing shoulder injury. On Thursday night, rookie Jacoby Brissett took over, and while he did nothing spectacular, the Patriots still won convincingly. In one more week, Brady is set to return to the field, and Gronkowksi should soon be healthy

That score would mark the end of Pace’s supposed rally and add another win to the win column for the Blue and Gold making this their second straight after dropping their first two games. Patterson would end the day with another stellar performance, throwing for 319 yards and two touchdowns on 19 for 27 passing, this performance almost on par with that of his career high numbers from last week’s contest. Freshman Ryan McCarthy would finish the day as the game’s
leading rusher with 73 yards and a touchdown on 9 carries, whereas Andre Anderson, who also had a big game last week, would quiet down a bit only rushing for 69 yards, but he would have a pair of short touchdown carries on the day. Rishawn Harris would be the team’s leading receiver with three receptions, 78 yards and two touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, Mr. Consistency himself, linebacker Tyler Condit, although he had a relatively quiet day, as did the rest of the defense, he would still find a way to lead the team in tackles with six total, a spot he would share with defensive back Stefano Bicknese. The defense couldn’t amount any sacks on
the day and Matt Olivo would have the team’s only interception. The Chargers look as if they are playing a different brand of football than they were in the first two weeks of the season. They look to continue their play as they take on crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State. SCSU is coming off a comeback win against American International by a score of 21-20, putting them at .500 football with a record of 2-2, 2-1 in Northeast-10 conference play. The last time the two rivals squared off, the Blue and Gold bested the Owls by a score of 28-14 and they look to do it again next week on their home turf as the university celebrates Family Day.

Remembering Amy

his past week marked what would have been Amy Winehouse’s 33rd birthday since she died of alcohol poisoning in 2011. Since her passing, Amy’s legacy continues through The Amy Winehouse Foundation, started by her father Mitch. According to the website, “The Amy Winehouse Foundation’s mission is supporting and empowering children and young adults in need through music therapy and music education and works to prevent the effects of drug and alcohol misuse on young people.” The Foundation works to support musical education, offers scholarships, and helps young adults navigate through rehab. This year, the founda-
tion is having artists cover Amy’s songs for a new channel on Youtube. Mitch talked about it during an exhibition at North London’s Zebra One Gallery, telling press and attendees, ”we’ve got this new YouTube channel where stars all over the world are going to do an Amy track and however many hits we get after the first two-million, we start making money for the foundation. Leona Lewis is going to do one, Lady Gaga will do one, and a few other stars. Hopefully it’s going to be a source of revenue for the foundation. We need money and that’s a great way to get cash and remember Amy, go on YouTube and have fun.” Amy’s stepmother, Jane, also spoke of the charity and the project, saying “This project will make such a profound difference to so many young women, enabling them to have a safe environment in which to re-build their lives

Fresh starts are difficult to make; full of challenges, but at Amy’s Place we will give young women the tools and support to help them make this a reality. ––––––––––––––––––––– Oh my gauze season two just aired! The world was first introduced to Scream Queens, created by the same minds who created American Horror Story and Glee, last September. Scream Queens is a cross between Glee and American Horror Story, its funny and scary at the same time. The first season had a killer cast with members like Nick Jonas, Ariana Grande, Jamie Lynn Curtis and Emma Roberts. This season the cast list is just as good, with stars like Kristie Alley, John Stamos, and Taylor Lautner. I found the season premiere hilarious! Season two opened with a flashback to Halloween of 1985. A pregnant worrying wife goes up to the nurse and tells her to help her husband who has
COPD. The nurse was hesitant but "gave in." The doctor and a nurse kill the patent so they don’t miss the Halloween party happening in the hospital behind them. They throw him in the swamp behind the the hospital. Tales of a monster called the “The Green Meanie” haunt the swamp. Hoping to cover their tracks, the doctor takes his green Halloween cape and ghoulish mask and throws it onto the patient. Present day (2016), that very hospital which is now called C.U.R.E institute is run by the one and only Cathy Munsch. But what happened to the Chanels? A Netflix documentary exonerated them, their families disowned them, and everyone basically hated them. Hester went to jail and Zayday agreed to work at C.U.R.E. institute after Munsch offered to pay for medical school. Doctor Brock Holt played by John Stamos
loves to brag about the fact he went to Harvard University. Zayday felt the hospital needed more woman staff and that is when Dean Munsch went to the Chanels. The Chanels agree to work at the hospital as medical students. Chanel makes a new enemy, Dr. Ingrid Hoffel (Kristie Alley) who is Munsch’s right hand man. Everyone’s first job is to try and cure an “incurable” patient, Catherine who looks like a werewolf. Zayday comes up with an idea to help cure Catherine, while the Chanels do what they do best, make fun of Catherine. Munsch finds out and puts them on academic probation. Chanel gives up her dreams of becoming the next Diane Sawyer and realizes that her and the Chanel’s can become special medical correspondents for Fox News, and have a their own tv show. Barging into the operating room where the other staff members are, Chanel and Dr. Brock Holt tell them what they figured out. Chanel #3, who is known for always wearing earmuffs, has them on in the operating room but has gloves covering the muff part. I found that super funny. Catherine was cured but all her hair was gone, therefore the Chanel’s give her a makeover. Catherine was head over heels with her new look. Dean Munsch is so happy with their work she lifts the Chanel’s academic probation,
but Chanel #5 is left to work the night shift. Chanel #5 decides to do hydrotherapy with Catherine. Locked in the tubs, hopeless the new killer comes in. Overall, I loved the episode and I look forward to the rest of the season. My predictions are that whoever is the new killer is the baby of the worrying wife from back in 1985. Based off the promo’s I know Hester is coming back and I am excited to see how that plays out. I think John, Kristie and Taylor are an amazing addition to the cast. At the very least, the notion of the Patriots going undefeated isn’t outlandish for a number of reasons. They’ve done it before, nine years ago. Almost every player from that team has moved on in one way or another, but two huge constants remain: Brady and Bellicheck. They are the heart and soul of this New England team, and if they see the opportunity to go undefeated they will definitely take it. Also of note, the Patriots are just a team that rarely loses. The Patriots have gone 12-4 each of the last four seasons, an impressive 75% win rate. Hypothetically speaking, if the Patriots have a 75% chance to

win every game they play, it’s not a stretch to think the 25% of a loss might not come this season. Lastly, their schedule lines up pretty favorably. Brady has historically owned the AFC East, and while the New York Jets definitely pose a threat, the Patriots could still go 6-0 in divisional play. That’s almost halfway to a perfect season in itself. The Patriots also play the NFC West, but have already beaten its best team, the Arizona Cardinals, on their own field. The biggest challenges the Patriots will face will be Week 7, at the Pittsburgh Steelers, Week 12, at the New York Jets, and Week 15, at the defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos. If the Patriots can win these three huge road games, there’s a great chance they could finish the regular season undefeated.

his past Thursday the Latin American Student Association (LASA) hosted CSELO’s Twisted Thursday with the theme of picking a stereotype that individual students have been called before or one that goes with who they are. The #Squashstereotypes was used for social media posts. “I’m black, but I’m not the sidekick ‘black best friend’ to a white person like Hollywood makes us be,” says sophomore Khaaliq Crowder. “I chose this stereotype because I’m a communication major so I like to study representations of people of color in the media.” Senior, Robert Durant decided to write, “Just because I’m black doesn’t mean I don’t know or have a bad relationship with my father. #SquashStereotypes.”

“Because of this stereotype I felt obligated to plan and host an event with my fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma, about fatherhood in society and explore the different faces it has in different racial and ethnic communities,” Durant said. Sophomore Ayleene Parada said, “Just because I’m Hispanic does not mean I’m lazy.” When asked how this stereotype affects her she responded saying, “The stereotype of the Hispanic culture is that we are lazy and don’t work we basically just take up space.” “Just because I’m black doesn’t mean that I’m ghetto, ratchet or ignorant,” says sophomore Zenobia Johnson. General phrases of advice were thrown around the room, a mix of serious and entertaining. Listening in one could hear everything from “get to know your advisor” to “make sure you keep a planner” to “avoid the sprinklers.” It was a nice, friendly atmosphere as new students were welcomed into our community with a helping hand. “I was pretty worried about keeping up with the larger work load compared to high school,” says freshman Lucas Kramer. Freshman Caitlin Carney had a more unique worry. She said, “I was most nervous about sharing a room with two other people because I’m an only child.” After a night of laughing and bonding though, all of these diverse fears were settled and most students learned that, with the right support, college is not so scary. “I guess the only thing I was worried about coming to college was probably finding the type of people I wanted to be around,” says freshman Luke Heller. “That really wasn’t too hard when I got here.” The Caribbean Student Association hosted a fantastic night. The whole thing was a success, and everyone in attendance left feeling great about both the advice they gave and the advice they received.

ast week, on September 19, campaign week for the class of 2020 and the class of 2018 presidential candidates kicked off. Fifteen freshmen students and three junior students were among those running for the position. Tuesday night was “Meet the Candidates,” where candidates and their supporters gathered to hear speeches from the individuals who were campaigning. The remainder of the week consisted of campaigning on social media and around campus, including Bartels, where the candidates were set up at tables to meet potential voters and answer any questions. Voting started on Monday (September 26) and ended Wednesday (September 28). Positions including President, Vice President, Treasurer, Executive Assistant, and Sergeant at Arms were also voted on and results will be announced a week after the election. Anyone among the 2020 and 2018 classes were able to vote via email, respectively. silon who carried out the theme for “sweet adventure” throughout the week. Through their candy themed events on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights, Delta Phi Epsilon was able to show the foundations their organization was built on; the bonds of sisterhood, and support for one another. On Tuesday and Wednesday night, the sorority was split up, but on Thursday they all came together which made Thursday night the favorite night for Vice President, Cassandra Courtemarche. Delta Phi Epsilon’s mission is for women to develop a social consciousness and a commitment to think and act for the greater good. DPhiE thinks the most important reason girls should join is if it feels
The Class President acts as a mouthpiece for their fellow classmates and serves in a two-year term, which is why the juniors of this year are voting as well as the freshmen. According to Joyce Lai, Executive Assistant of USGA, “It is the role of the president to make sure all other officers are doing their expected duties and responsibilities. The president is also the initial contact between other classes or RSOs. The president also makes sure the concerns of their class are being addressed.” One of Lai’s roles is to be the Chair of the Elections Committee, approving candidates’ flyers and posters as well as making sure that everyone is following U.N.H. policies during the campaigning and election process. The Elections Committee and USGA also play a part in campaign week as well as the Center for Student Engagement, Leadership, and Orientation (CSELO). Work starts early to prepare for elections during Summer Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR), and the Freshman Leader Experience (FLEX), which allows for freshmen to move in early and receive leadership training. like home to them. Delta Phi Epsilon is holding an event called “Deepher Dude” this fall to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis. Last year they raised over $7,000. This is not their only philanthropy though, in the spring they also focus on ANAD which is Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders. On Friday (September 23), the sororities held “welcome home” parties to celebrate the expansion of their organizations and to welcome all of the ladies who accepted bids into their organization. All of these sororities are unique in their own ways. They all have different missions and intentions and are all very diverse, a prefect reflection of the U.N.H. community.
