Eight years seems like a long time, yet I’m sure we can all remember when we heard the news that a plane had somehow hit the World Trade Center in New York City. For those of us who are seniors, most of us were in the eighth grade and it was just another day. I was in history class, by far my least favorite subject. part of pop culture, thanks to University of New Haven graduate Lawrence Flanagan ’80. Flanagan is this fall’s Bartels fellow, and will speak at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30 in Dodds Theatre. The lecture is free to all students, faculty,

revived after a slump in the 1990’s, and Flanagan was hailed a hero. Flanagan does not take much credit for his marketing heroism, stating instead “I was just willing to say, ‘I think this is the best thing to do’. I’d rather do the right thing than
the safe thing.” Flanagan will spend the day at UNH on September 30, speaking to students and faculty in classes, having lunch with students leaders, and presenting the lecture at 11 a.m. at Dodds. Remember: all are invited!

Meerkats are one of the most adorable creatures in the animal kingdom. From the time they are born to adulthood, they never lose their babylike features. They have an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years and from head to tail they span from 7 to 10 inches. They descend from the mongoose
lizards, snakes, and plants. They display altruistic behavior by alternatively giving or accepting a position as a sentry. Meerkats given this status are responsible for keeping watch of predators while the rest of the gang, mob, or clan (group of Meerkats) search for food or play. When danger is around, the sentry will bark loudly for the others to hear and they will run and hide

I was born to make a difference. Last year, I went to get a mammogram for breast cancer. Luckily, the doctor’s report was the best of the worst news: I had a tumor, but it was benign (non cancerous). However, I cried hysterically hearing the news that I had to get surgery to remove it: I was terrified. That surgery changed my life forever, whether I was aware of it then or not. One day while I was at a MEISA meeting, I was struck with a brilliant idea. I could make a mixed CD, composed of all different musicians (including my own band) and original songs and sell it to students to raise money for breast cancer. I was overwhelmed by the idea that music could make a difference in someone else’s life, not just my own, and I started working on the CD in January. I contacted all the musicians, producers, a packaging company, and a talented graphic designer (Ryan Kajator) to design the CD cover. I am still putting the finishing touches on the CD, but hope to see it ready for production soon.
The proceeds from my compilation CD, as well as fundraising through MEISA, will be going to the Linda Creed Breast Cancer Foundation. Linda Creed, a very talented singer and my father’s cousin, passed away from breast cancer a few years ago. She wrote the song the “Greatest Love of All” sung by Whitney Houston. This foundation helps pay for mammograms and breast cancer research. My goal is to raise over two thousand dollars, or approximately 200 CD’s. MEISA and I will be sitting in Bartels selling the CD’s for five dollars and breast cancer bandanas for one dollar. If you are interested: please come out and buy something! As the 2009 school year gets under way, many new and returning traditions are in the air for the men of Delta Chi. The month of September is looking to be a busy month. Recruitment week starts Sept. 21 at 9:00pm in the Quad. The events for recruitment week include Duckpin Bowling with Chi Kappa Rho, meet the brothers flag football, man
hunt, and the Smoker at Gipper’s Restaurant in Milford. As the month of September comes to an end, Delta Chi is ready to help bring back Charger football with the Blueout Blowout Homecoming Game 2009 at the Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. The brothers will be participating in the float parade and cheering on the team. In the month of October, the organization will be volunteering at food shelters and soup
kitchens around the New Haven area and will be participating in the ALS walk. At the end of the month, the brothers will be hosting their annual blood drive to benefit the Red Cross. Look for the sign up table in the Bartels lobby. A new tradition Delta Chi looks to start is volunteering at the VA Hospital with the help of Professor Dr. J. Monahan. The VA Hospital depends on volunteers and benefactors to give something back to America’s he-
roes. By volunteering the brothers will provide many important functions throughout the facility and make the patients’ stay more enjoyable. In addition three times a week, from 6:30 am to 7:30 am, these dedicated cadets meet outside of the Fitness Center to take part in PT (physical training) to improve their strength, endurance, and group cohesion. The last element of the ROTC program is a weekly event known as a “leadership lab.” The lab takes place at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT. Students carpool to Sacred Heart to practice skills such as orienteering, radio communication, first aid, and squad tactics out in the field. The reason why each student participates varies, but many
students are eligible for an ROTC scholarship, which pays for much of the college education as well as a monthly stipend ranging anywhere from $300 to $500. Does being in ROTC mean you are automatically in the Army? No, absolutely not! Students are given the option to try the program without any obligation for up to two years. Students who take the “un-contracted” path are only required to attend the Military Science class. PT and leadership labs are optional, although highly recommended. The Army ROTC program is not all work and no play. Students participate in a wide variety of extracurricular activities, from varsity sports to other ROTC activities
such as color guard or Ranger Challenge. The teamwork style of ROTC leads quickly to friendship and companionship; students push each other to become better individuals and leaders. Activities such as the twice a year training weekend (FTX), trips to the rappel, or confidence courses help students understand not only the rigors of the Army, but also their own limitations. In the end, no matter who you are, cadences (the chants cadets shout out to keep in step) can bring both pride and inspiration. So if you have not considered checking the ROTC program out, please do so! You may learn something and you’ll have fun along the way!

New to the campus this year is the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps or AROTC program. The goal of the ROTC program is to help young men and women become leaders and officers in today’s world. Everyone has heard the saying “The best things in life are free”. These words hold a special place in every broke college student’s heart. How can anyone pass up free? The only thing better than getting something for free is getting something expensive for free; such as a car, school books, or tutoring. I bet right now you are thinking it would be completely amazing but highly unlikely to get any of those for free. What if I told you that you were wrong about one of those things? While the CLR cannot get you a free car or books, we do provide free tutoring. What is the CLR and what do I have to do to get this free tutoring you ask? The Center for Learning Resources is where students can go to get free tutoring in just about any subject area. We have made some big changes since last year, adding more tutors and greatly expanding our hours. Currently,
there are 35 professional, graduate, and undergraduate tutors on staff in the CLR. Three new subject areas are now being covered, which include 5 different languages, history, and engineering to make 44 subject areas in total being covered. Our tutors are available from 9:30am to 10pm Mon. through Thurs., 9:30am to 1:30pm Fri., and 9:30am to 4:30pm Sat. These new expanded hours are perfect for commuters and night students to come in after a late class. This all sounds pretty good right? But you must be wondering about the catch. Nothing this good could really be for free, right? The catch is that you have to be a UNH student. That’s it. Thinking about taking advantage of this free tutoring? You can chose to either make an appointment or just stop in whenever you have some free time. If you want to make an appointment, just come in and sign up on the appointment sheet. You can make up to three 30 minute appointments a
week and you need to make an appointment at least an hour before the start time. You cannot make appointments back to back. Make sure you check the schedule BEFORE making an appointment to make sure someone who can tutor in your area will be on duty. Not all math tutors can help you with every math class. You can find the CLR on the first floor of Maxcy in rooms 108 – 110. Why should you come to the CLR? If the 35 tutors working in 44 subject areas at the astronomical price of free did not pull you in, then maybe you find your self struggling with one of your classes? Maybe you are looking for a place to do your homework where someone can help if you come across a problem? Maybe you are doing well in a class and want to do even better? Twisted Thursday Brings Free Beta Fish

What is there to do at UNH on a Thursday night? Well, there is the obvious, but what if someone is looking for an alternative to a typical Thursday? How about a Twisted Thursday? Every Thursday night, the Office of Student Activities has an event planned at 10:00 p.m. in the Echlin Dining Hall, otherwise known as Bartels. Free to all students, anyone can come and enjoy the event for the week and just spend some time with other people on campus who are not already headed downtown. This week’s Twisted Thursday was the second one of the semester, last week’s being the speed dating to promote networking and new friendships. The event involved free fish tanks for the
first forty-five people and grilled cheese sandwiches served with tomato soup. Male Beta fish were lined up on a table and participants could pick their own plastic tanks and covers, a plastic plant, rocks, and fish food for their new fish. There were blue, red, and purple fish available for choosing. The event officially started at 10:00 p.m., but people were already waiting at around 9:30 p.m. By 9:45 p.m. there was already a line big enough to claim all of the fish. The best advice is to always come early, because items at events always go quickly and when they say limited quantity, they mean first come first serve. Nevertheless, it was another successful event on campus. Too often people complain that there is nothing to do on
campus and that they are bored. Well, a word of advice to all students here at UNH, “Get Out of Your Dorm Rooms!” Events on campus will not come to you. Everyone gets emails about things that are happening. Stop deleting them and go check events out and enjoy everything this college has to offer. By paying money to come here, every student should take advantage of everything offered at this school. This money was not paid for people to sit and watch TV in the dorms. Make your college experience worth it. The best times are always hanging out at free events with your friends, enjoying some food, and earning or winning free stuff. Praising SCOPE...And It’s Not Even December!
Every student pays a fee each year, a good percentage of which goes to the Undergraduate Student Government Association (USGA). This money, which adds up to over $1.1 million this year, is split amongst all of the U S G A - r ec o g n i z e d clubs, organizations, classes, and medias: The Chariot Yearbook, The Charger Bulletin, and the Student Committee Of Programming Events (SCOPE). To show you just how much money some of these groups get, for the 2009-2010 academic year SCOPE received a budget of
over $520,000. This money goes towards planning such amazing events such as this past week’s Family Feud game show, this week’s Big E trip, Rock ‘n’ Roll Week, and of course Spring Concert and Spring Weekend! This past weekend, SCOPE was supposed to have a trip to Six Flags Great Adventure. Unfortunately, due to circumstances completely out of their control, they had to postpone the trip until a later date. While I have heard some individuals complain that the trip was cancelled, I completely commend SCOPE

Some of us are leaders of other groups, managers at restaurants, or Resident Assistants for ORL. Sure, we get a stipend: this IS a job afterall. Sure, we get great information for our resume, and sure
we get great experience for all of the work and planning that we do. Most importantly, however, we affect the lives of thousands of UNH students. The SCOPE cochairs and committee heads may be students first, but they’re a close second place as successful planners. Next time you pass by anyone involved in SCOPE, thank them for all the hard work they’ve already done – and enjoy the hundreds of thousands of dollars of work they put in each and every year! With all their hard work and dedication, this year will be sure to please.

On Sept. 13, I sat down in my living room with my roommate to watch the MTV Video Music Awards. The show, known for its drama and ridiculous acts, seemed to be an ideal way to end a rather long and boring Sunday. The first award was Top Female Music Video. Amongst the likes of P!NK, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Kelly Clarkson, I was wholeheartedly surprised to see Taylor Swift nominated. My surprise grew when her name was announced and she walked to the stage. The young 18 year old country star was in complete shock over her win and took to the microphone smil-

Finally, when she took the stage as winner of Best Video of the Year, Beyonce once again showed her class by ushering Taylor Swift back on the stage to have the moment she should have had at the beginning of the show. Kanye left the show early: showing his cowardly nature and inability to “own up” to his childish mistakes. All that, and Kanye’s purported apology aside, I think everyone here at UNH can learn a lesson from Kanye West and the 2009 Video Music Awards. If you have something to say: think about it before
you say it. I’m a huge fan of people speaking their minds; self expression is the entire reason I joined the paper as a freshman. A lot of times in life you dislike someone, or something, and therefore want to speak out on it. But let’s all take a second, step back, and really think about the way its being done. Chances are the only person you’ll make a fool out of is yourself, so use caution when you decide to walk into controversial territory. Oh and by the way, Kanye, guess what? I think Taylor Swift wholeheartedly deserved her video music award. She is gracious, talented, HUMBLE, and fresh. Where exactly is your moonman?

Some parents came and took their kids out of school. Some had family members in New York that day, or family members that flew out of Boston headed for the West Coast. The school was subdued for the rest of the day, the bus ride home was almost silent and our parents hugged us when we got home. Now we can look back and fully understand the magnitude of what happened on September 11, 2001. If there is someone here who has not been affected by the events of that day, I will be shocked (please remember that this is predominately a criminal justice and forensic science university). The attacks
have changed the way that many of us will do business. None of us can ever forget what we witnessed in our classrooms eight years ago and so it is only right that we continue to take time to remember those people who lost their lives that day. Last Friday the Undergraduate Student Government Association (USGA) and a committee of students came together to remember those victims and heroes. Students and faculty who wished to get an inside look at what the firefighters of New York City went through that morning eight years ago. Game Review: Sins of a Solar Empire

Sins of a Solar Empire is an RTS, realtime strategy game, developed by Ironclad Games and published by Stardock Entertainment on Feb. 2, 2008 for PC. It follows the events of the Trader Emergency Coalition, which has been attacked by fellow humans and an unknown alien race. The game doesn’t have a single player campaign; instead opting for a sandbox mode where you can fight computer players and unlock achievements. There is also a multiplayer option where you can
go online to find other players or a LAN option. With the game be-
ing advertised on its massive scale and attention to detail at the minor levels, I
was impressed with the look and feel of the game. It is definitely good at the ship

If anyone thought the MTV reality show A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila was drama, consider the commotion that transpired off-camera on Sept. 6 involving the petite celebrity. Tila Nguyen—a singer, actress, and model infamously recognized as Tila Tequila who rose to fame following her internet celebrity on MySpace, is now the subject of a domestic dispute. But whether this is a case of domestic abuse or just another celebrity showdown to make headlines is unclear. Cops arrived to San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman’s home Sunday morning after Nguyen called the police at 3:45 a.m., alleging she was choked and detained by her NFL boyfriend. Merriman was arrested on charges of battery and false imprisonment. But as with any drama, it only gets uglier. Contrary to reports that he beat Nguyen, Merriman maintains the only thing he is guilty of is protecting his girlfriend. In fact, he says he tried to keep an “extremely intoxicated” Nguyen out of harm’s way by thwarting her leaving. “I was concerned about her welfare given the intoxicated state she appeared to be in and I encouraged her to stay until safe transportation could be provided,” says the linebacker. Merriman
went on to say that he wants to concentrate on a winning season with the San Diego Chargers and clear his name of any wrongdoing. However, Nguyen dismissed Merriman’s claims that she was drunk by citing how she is “allergic to alcohol” on her Twitter page. “It has been publicly known for years. That is how I got the name ‘Tila Tequila’ cuz the irony. I can’t drink,” she tweeted. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, both Nguyen and Merriman were spotted at Stinagree nightclub just two hours before the incident. Owner James Brennan reveals Nguyen was, in fact, drinking. Allusions to her reality show A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila have also been made in conjuncture with some of her YouTube videos which feature her rapping about drinking or showing champagne bottles. So, is Tila Nguyen really a victim or just another celebrity vying for more attention? Earlier last week, prosecutors in San Diego chose to not pursue charges against the linebacker. Their reasoning? They stated that they had a lack of definitive evidence. But will more charges come of this investigation? Whatever the case may be, it seems Tila Nguyen’s “shot at love” with Shawne Merriman might just be over.

The people and bands interviewed all spoke of the great times and these now nonexistent clubs, as if they had just been there the night before. Most of the clubs were found in New Haven, such as Ron’s Place, considered the CBGB's before CBGB's, as well as the Grotto and the Oxford Ale House. Other venues from surrounding cities, namely Bridgeport’s Hotel St. George and the El & Gee in New London, were also touched upon. Although the stories about these dingy music halls brought laughs to the room, they were much more than amusing anecdotes. These clubs were places for kids to go and for bands that weren’t accepted anywhere else to play their hearts out. This message resonated the most throughout the documentary. Candelaria Hammers 19 in Chargers 3-1 Win Over Rollins

LOWELL, Mass. The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated Rollins College 3-1 Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Bentley University Invitational, which was hosted at UMass Lowell. The Chargers improve to 5-3 on the season, while Rollins falls to 11-2 with the loss. After playing even through the first 12 points in the opening set, the Chargers gave up three unanswered points to fall behind 9-6. New Haven rallied in the set and eventually evened the score at 14-14. They then scored six of the next seven points to take a commanding
20-15 lead in the set. The teams exchanged points before the Chargers took at 2520 victory. The second set started much like the opening set, with New Haven falling behind by a point early. UNH then went on a 7-1 runs, giving them a 14-8 lead. Rollins fought back, however, and once again evened the score at 17-17 later in the match. The Chargers managed to close out the set which concluded with a kill by Chelsey Alpough. In the third set, the Tars and Chargers played to a 15-15 tie, before Rollins took control of the set with a 4-0 run. UNH cut the lead to 21-20, but the Tars closed out the set by scoring four of the last three points, winning 25-23.
In the forth set the Chargers took a 4-4 score and tallied three unanswered points. The Chargers led by as many as seven, at the 15-8 mark, and did not allow the Tars closer than three points in the 25-20 victory. Freshman Keidy Candelaria led the Chargers with 19 kills on 48 attempts with seven errors (.250 hitting percentage) in the match. Sara Malmlov tallied 18 kills on 43 attempts with four errors (.326 hitting percentage). Tia Inong also tallied double figure kills with 10. Alpough dished out 48 assists in the match, while Inong led the UNH defense with 20 digs. Libero Heather Ladao added 29 digs and Malmlov added 13 digs.

The Philadelphia Eagles faced off against the Carolina Panthers, and the birds came out on top with a 38 to 10 victory. The Eagles forced seven turnovers and rallied on defense in the wake of losing Brian Dawkins and defensive coordinator Jim Johnson over the off season. Jake Delhomme, Carolina's normally on-par QB, threw three interceptions and was pulled from the game in the third quarter for his lackluster per-

Finally, the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears faced off in the 8 oclock game, and a surprisingly weak Cutler made his debut as the 2009 Bear's QB. He threw four interceptions and allowed the Packers to get underneath his skin. The loss of Brian Urlacher, two sacks, and an inability to move the ball downfield without turnovers proved to be the end for the Bears in the 15 to 21 loss. Hopefully, this powerful NFC steps it up next week as they move on to face the Steelers. Other big games this week came from the Dallas Cowboys, the Indianapolis Colts, and the New York Jets. In an article from one of last year’s issues, I wrote about a band called Between the Trees. Now I’ll be reviewing their latest album, called Spain, which just came out in August. Let me just start off by saying that Spain is quite incredible, in my opinion. Lead singer Ryan Kirkland has such an amazing and power-
ful voice and his lyrics simply speak to you. All the guys in the band have worked really hard and this album truly shows that it paid off. The title track, as well as all the others, sound so beautiful, you won’t be able to stop listening to them. control. Trying to control the flow of battle is pointless; most of the time the AI targets the weakest units or the units already damaged more effectively then a human could. If anything, Sins of a Solar Empire is a resource management game trying to work out what to do to expand. Sins of a Solar Empire is under the category of 4X games where the player controls an empire and tries to “eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate”. Most of these games are turn based, but since
Sins of a Solar Empire is an RTS, the game play is slow at best. For multiplayer this is doubly so, but Ironclad Games has the useful option to save the multiplayer games to be started at a later time. This means that a single Sins game can go on for days. I promise you one thing, however: Sins of a Solar Empire isn’t boring; diplomacy, bribes, and pirates spice up the game play with action and moving alliances. For an RTS, Sins of a Solar Empire does very well; everything you do, or mess up
on, effects the outcome of the game. If you expand too fast, your production is slowed. If you don’t expand fast enough, you lag behind everyone else. As a final warning: this game is not for people who want instant gratification from their games, Sins of a Solar Empire is not fast or filled with action. If I could give it an age group I would put Sins of a Solar Empire in the 40+ group for folks who can’t react as fast as younger people can. Pick it up in a store near you!

Coming from a person who has had a particularly bad week: Rebecca Kitchell, your “Things to Make You Smile” segment of your “Beat the Blues” emails last week was much needed. Sometimes, random acts of kindness can make a person’s day. I always feel like I should say thank you when a stranger does so, but it never seems right…probably because they are a stranger. Duh. But, hey! Look at me! I have publicity at my disposal! THANK YOU Rebecca Kitchell, I needed to smile and you made me smile! As corny and/or preachy as that last paragraph by Sam Drotar sounded, suck it up peeps, I can’t be funny all the A weekly recap of the positives & negatives at UNH time! ANYHOO! Family feud was so much fun! I should have played! I would have owned! You should have been there! Okay, I’m done with exclamation points for a while. As a tiny side-note: grandma’s are awesome. My grandma brought me like a thousand homemade sugar cookies last night. YAY GRANDMA! As an even tinier side-note: I’m wondering if anyone out there shares the same love for post-it notes as I do? …or I could just be all alone… P.S.—I decided to rename the “Negative” section of this week’s Battery as “Negativo” because, I felt like it. :D

So, HOW much does it suck that Six Flags was cancelled? Due to a ridiculous amount of preposterous circumstances beyond SCOPE’s control, hundreds, or maybe just my own, dreams were crushed! Kingda Ka shall have to wait for me! Sit tight, peeps. Six Flags is not forgotten. KANYE. WHAT are you DOING with your life?!?! JUST LEAVE PEOPLE ALONE! Taylor swift WON the Best Female Video award at the VMA’s because people voted for her! Let the girl be! Besides, Beyoncé has won every single award possible like twice! She is probably not at all pissed off about not winning the award, she is probably pissed off that she has to attend these stupid events every five seconds! Kanye: chill the ::bleep:: out, man! P.S.—The previous usage of ‘::bleep::’ is because of my amazing, awesome, totally rad Editor-in-Chief, Zack Rosen. Maybe some of you have noticed that last week I referred to Envy on the Coast as “fan-mazing.” Envy was incredible, but I would never, EVER, make up such a dumb phrase like ::shudders:: ‘fan-mazing.’ In fact, my previous use of the word flabbergasted in paragraph 1 was pushing it for me. So I will know be inserting such gems as ::bleep:: just to avoid the horror that was ‘fan-mazing.’ And thank you to my friends who have been relentless with their mockery.
